TUTORIAL - connect Zoom H1n to camera and use it as a stereo mic

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Use your Zoom H1n as a stereo mic on top of your camera. You can also enable the limiter to prevent clipping and highpass filter to attenuate low frequency rumble.

    Excellent video, especially for non -tech savvy people like me. I recently bought the Zoom H1N and I have been using a Boya BY-M1 mic with my Nikon D5300. I want to connect the mic with the Zoom H1N and then connect the Zoom H1N to my camera, so that I have 2 audio files. 1. Which cable do I need? TRS to TRRS or some other one? 2. Please give some advice regarding an inexpensive lav mic, which is similar in quality and price as Boya BY m1, because the part of Boya BY-M1 with the battery makes it really fragile. Dang, totally forgot about that. But you´re right, in most cases it will sound considerably better than the in-camera microphones. You also get a true stereo recording, which not every camera provides. Additionally the usability is higher, because you do not have to dive into menus to change your audio gain. And the limiter on the H1n prevents clipping, which is a feature you will hardly find on any camera. So, I think besides the upgrade in audio quality there are quite a few more reasons you might use the H1n on top of a camera. Thank you for your input!

    Great videos on the Zoom H1n but you forgot to mention 1 important thing I believe. There are 2 ways of recording when connecting the H1n to a camera. You can simply use the H1n as a mic that feeds directly to the camera or you can also press record on the H1n and get a redundant recording to the H1n SD card in addition to the recording in the camera.

    Have you tried both, I am considering getting an H1n and wondering if the line out has the same quality as the recorded audio (obviously the camera becomes the recorder at that point) but I am just curious if the line out is the same quality as the internal recording.

  • @ClassicCyclingCC

    @ClassicCyclingCC

    Hi Jeremy. This is my take on the H1n after using 1 for about 6 months. It is a very versatile and easy to use digital recorder but I find it extremely sensitive to any surrounding noise like wind, white noise, or any shake or movement. The recording on the camera coming from the line out of the H1n is fine but I think that the internal recording from the H1n SD card sounds better. However, I also use a Rode Wireless Go that I connect to my camera and personally the camera recording from the Rode sounds better. It is cleaner and requires less processing in post than the recording from the H1n. 1 set up I haven’t tried yet is connecting the Rode Wireless receiver to the line in of the H1n and then connecting the line out of the H1n to the camera and see what that sounds like. My next experiment.

    Hi Julian. May I firstly congratulate you on the quality of your videos which have been very useful to an inexperienced sound person. My question is could you use the H1 (or higher zoom models) as a live streaming mic which connects directly to a laptop? I'm looking to improve the audio on my KZread videos but want a flexible solution where I can record sound files directly for voice overs or out and about through a lav mic as well as hopefully using it as an external microphone on my laptop for live stream Q and A sessions with OBS Studio. So basically, could I use a TRS to TRS lead from the Zoom H1 output to the microphone input on my laptop for this purpose?

  • @JulianKrause

    @JulianKrause

    5 жыл бұрын

    Glad you like my videos!!! If you only want to have a mic to plug straight into your PC for live streaming, I would recommend something like the Samson Q2u. In my opinion, this will give you an even better audio quality than the H1n. But if you like the versatility of the H1n and want to connect a lavalier, it is still a good choice. And yes, you can use the H1n to live stream. You can simply connect it to the PC via USB and you can use it as an audio interface. So, the sound of the H1n could be used as a mic in OBS.

    Hi, Julian! Thank you for the video! Very useful! I'm using the Magic Lantern, do you know if it changes something for the volume calibration? I know that Magic Lantern allows me to use the original camera mic in one channel and the output signal from external mic in other. Julian, while this does work fine and thanks for the info about getting a -6dB tone, there is one problem from the Zoom into my camera. The output from the Zoom headphone is noisy. So you get the mic noise on the input and the noisy output from the Zoom itself which makes for fairly noisy stereo recordings. Sorry, I know this is a fairly old video now, but I suspect some kind of impedance adapter might help between the recorder output and the camera input to try and reduce this noise.

    I never had a go with it Greg. Mainly because I don’t use it this way. My guess is that it’s just an electrical mismatch with my camera. To be honest, even using a headphone into the Zoom is noisy. It does tend to hiss. It’s on the output because that hiss isn’t on the recordings. Just the output so it’s coming from the headphone amp section.

    Hey, I guess the audio is so low, because you did not turn the gain (rotary knob on top of H1n) to a proper value. Please watch my beginner's guide, there I explain how to record audio correctly: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZKim0Kyihamzk9Y.html If you have already recorded something and you have to use the recording, you will have to amplify the recording in premiere. Of course, the next time you should record your audio with proper levels to begin with :) The dB scale is negative, because there is a maximum level how loud audio can get (0dBFS). You always have to stay below that level, and because of that the dBs are negative.

    All I did was set the H1n to auto level off and use the gain to check the max db of your audio source before recording. He was saying make sure it does not exceed -6db, but also not so low it doesn't pick up any audio. The other fiddling about is not necessary. You can just plug it in and it works. If your audio source is too loud or quiet, then adjust recording level in canon's settings. For reference my recording level doing a vlog indoors was set to -10db and my gain on the nob was around 7.

    No. But having the card and using the record button will create a higher quality version of the audio that you can use in post. Also the H1 N comes equipped with a tone recording to easily sync the two if you edit on software that does not include auto sync.

    Hey, if I understand you correctly, you want to know if you have to press the record button on the recorder to record audio with the camera. Not necessarily. As soon as you connect the H1n to the camera and turn on the H1n the audio of the H1n is recorded by the camera. If you hit record on the H1n you would also record the sound on the H1n, but that's not really necessary.

    Hey, noise can have many sources. The limiter for example creates some noise on the H1n. So if you don't need it, turn it off. To get the cleanest sound try to get the H1n as close to your audio source as possible. As small amount of noise is usually pretty normal with the H1n.

  • @JulianKrause

    @JulianKrause

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes, this would work with a camcorder the same way. One thing to keep in mind: Depending on the quality of the built-in microphones of the camcorder you might not gain much. Using the H1n is recommended, when you have very poor microphones in your camera because the H1n can record a better sound. But if the mics in the camcorder are already pretty good, the H1n might not improve the sound much more.
