In this conversation, my sister Hannah McNeely and I cover meandering topics largely about motherhood that consistently bring us back to the theme of trusting our intuition and not comparing ourselves to others. This is a snapshot of what our unrecorded chats sound like. We inspire each other daily and hopefully this conversation can give you a nudge to recalibrate back to hearing your heart and living true to it.
In this episode we cover:
- Raw and unfiltered motherhood talk: highlights and struggles
- Parenting in the newborn phase and toddlerhood
- Baby sleep and our experience
- How to trust your intuition in motherhood and not compare yourself to others
- Homeschooling inspiration and education paradox
- Money, saving, spending, and travel
- The joys of life and how much future is ahead of us

Best parenting advice I ever got was from my Mom. She always said that you should feel honoured if your kids acted out at home. It meant that they felt loved and safe enough to test boundaries safely.

My two favorite KZread sisters :D I'm in my mid twenties so I love watching you both since you're a little bit ahead of me in your life journey.

So agree that the “terrible twos” never made sense to me. Love to see them grow and blossom at that time. They’re gaining more independence and learning how to communicate more.

I really hope you’re doing ok, Hannah! You come alive whenever you’re in Hawaii, and I’ve noticed you skirt over talking about your move (in your own videos too). I get the sense that you’re not entirely fulfilled by your current situation; which I hope is a misread. But if not, know that you deserve to be truly happy.

When I'm struggling in my life I always love listening to your podcast Ellen, and this one specially really made me feel like I'm not alone, and now I feel my struggles are not the end of the world, they are part of the process, and I'm handling things as well as I can, and I'm not doing as bad as I may think sometimes. Thank you.

You both are great and inspiring! I would actually love to hear how you each see your childhood differently, in your next podcast together. If you don't want to get too personal, I understand. But if you could go even a little bit into it, I would be really interested in that. My brother and I have very different takes on ours, and even though we're very close, I do feel like I have to defend my POV about this specifically, so often. It would be interesting to hear how you deal with that as sisters. Thank you for all your content! :)

I heard someone say that no two siblings have the same parents because for example they might have been in a different stage in their own personal development, or in different stages in their relationship, careers, different economic position, etc and I found that interesting to ponder on. My brother and I are two years apart and we were home schooled together yet have very different experiences of our childhood.

I LOVE when Hannah said she wasn't a 'baby person'. I 1000% resonate - so not a 'baby person' but wow since my son turned 2 I've been having the time of my life! Watching his independence bloom, sense of adventure, conversations, our relationship is becoming more and more expansive! I feel we all resonate with different stages of life!

Lovely and great chat. Unfortunately isn't every parent that have the financial possibility to be at home to homeschooling. I really admire those who does it. And by being a mother of a toddler and a baby, I do feel for their life on having to send them to formal School. So I have decided to, during weekend do a little bit of homeschooling and make the most of it... love your work Ellen. Great to see/listen to more podcasts.

I can agree partially to what you said about listening to one's intuition. In my own motherhood journey I realised that my intuition was so overlayered by my own experiences of how I was raised that they provoked immediate automatic reactions to situations that weren't conform with my values but felt like intuition in the moment. I guess being aware of one's values and working through beliefs that might not actually be your own but what was taught to you can really help to become better at intuitive parenting. And for that I found it very helpful to compare my parenting to others ocassionally. People like the two of you or Ashley from Hapa family demonstrated in their vlogs how gentle parenting can look like and that helped me to keep working on finding my intuition. I just wanted to point this out as intuition can be something hard to navigate depending on one's own upbringing. Great episode!

You two are such wonderful humans! I love the positive message that you are putting out into the world, your down to earth outlook with the strive to be the best parents you can be without judgment of others makes it easy to be inspired by the both of you without feeling inferer 💗 thank you❤🧡💛💚💙. On the sleep note, feed sleep bond on Facebook has been my favorite person to follow about sleep I think you both would like it, she's really about being intuitive and not feeling pressured to sleep train but also gives tools to use if co sleeping or whatever isn't working. Currently watching this in bed with my 4th baby that's 17 months sound a sleep in my bed lol I'm not a sleep expert but at the moment it's not an issue but when it is we will start transitioning him but he's our last so he can lap it up for a bit longer lol.

My babies just started sleeping through when they stopped breastfeeding because I was pregnant. Which was around 4 😬 but that was OK for us. My first was very anxious and I didn't want to add any more stress on her. She still want me to out her to bed at 9.

Is it bad though? I guess it has to do with the parents/caretakers if it's good or bad and if they have a bigger community of other parents and children like Ellen does.
