That thump you hear when you get a solid bone structure hit is amazing. I always hear it when I aim for the hips, it seems like that thump is even more definitive when you hit the pelvic bowl. Plus it’s always fun watching them do a flip or two

Here in Indiana we don't have prairie dogs, we have their big brothers groundhogs or "woodchucks". There is no season, restriction or bag limit on shooting/killing them. I shoot a fair number of them every year to thin them down. You can kill them with a .22 LR but a decent size adult male can be 12 -15 plus pounds. On note of that a .22 Magnum, .17 HMR on up is much preferred and does a better job. My favorite groundhog rifle is a 2004-2005ish Marlin 917V .17 HMR heavy bull barrel bolt action. I've shot over 150 with that one rifle alone. A old 1990 Ruger 10/22 .22LR stainless with birch wood stock has killed nearly that many as well. I've shot them with SKSs in 7.62x39mm, Colt H-bar in 5.56x45mm NATO, Springfield Armory M1A National Match with walnut stock in 7.62x51mm NATO and various other rifles. Once in awhile up close with handguns but they are skiddish and like to run. Don't fart, blow your nose or make any noises while hunting them. They run like lightning for as fat and stocky as they are. They also are easily alerted and hear everything, even a bathroom window slowly slide up to shoot them from cover and concealment.

Hi Cave Dweller, Love your vids. Was hoping you could give me some advise. A friend of mine is taking me on a hunt in South Dakota this spring to shoot some Prairie dogs on his Family's ranch. I've never done it before and have two guns I'm taking along. The 1st is my A17 17HMR, second is my bolt action 6.5 Creedmoor. My old eyes are not what they used to be and I don't see myself shooting past 200 yards or so. The 6.5 has a 4 X 16 on it that I think will be good for that range. The A17 has a BSA sweet 17 for 17HMR in 3 X 9. What are your thoughts on the 3 X 9 getting it done out to 200? Would I be better off upgrading? Thanks for your time Cave Dweller. I appreciate and value your opinion. Jeff

.17 HMR is good out to around 150 - 175 yards max. If you are shooting past that you need a .223/5.56mm or something else. A 6.5 Creedmoor would be overkill on a prairie dog which is a animal about the size of a large adult squirrel. .22-250, .223/5.56mm, 5.45x39mm, 7.62x39mm, .17 Hornet, 5.7x28mm FNH and things of this nature would be ideal picks.

@@cavedweller1959 My furthest shot and kill on a groundhog was 146 yards. It was with my Marlin 917V .17 HMR, BSA Sweet 17 3x12x40 using Hornady 17 grain V-Max ballistic tip. Also have a Harris Bipod with 1" leather Military sling and Uncle Mike's QD swivels. Once she was zeroed at 100 yards the rest is just turning knobs. That's one of those rifles you tell your buddies...."hey watch this...even with my eyes closed!" Sure man.......then holy crap, just like you said. Pre Freedom Group Marlin/Glenfield microgroove rifling is no joke. Also have a 18 shot 1967 and 1976 Glenfield Marlin Model 60s in .22 LR.

When looking for a Glenfield/Marlin rifle anything made before December 2007 still has the old craftsmen that worked there 20, 30, 40+ years still building them. That is before the buyout and everybody got pissed off. They knew how to make those old machines run but didn't like training new Remington employees trying to force them out and taking their places how to use them.
