243 Winchester vs 6.5 Creedmoor

Ойын-сауық

In this video I compare the classic 243 Winchester to the 6.5 Creedmoor. I go over the ballistics to see which one is more powerful, which one is a better deer cartridge and which one is better for varmint. Hope you enjoy the video.

I’ll take a .243 since I already have a 30-06 and am getting a 300 Winchester magnum. 6.5 CM hit at the right time with good marketing and really isn’t different enough for me compared to 260 Rem. 260 was never marketed well and came along at a time when 6.5 wasn’t all the rage like it is now. So for me it’s .243

25-06 is kind of a forgotten and greatly under-rated cartridge. At 400 yds with 110-120 grn bullets, its energy is extremely similar to the little Creedy. However, the Quarter Bore will shoot flatter and recoil about the same as the 6.5 CM. For anyone who isn't hung up on short actions and short barrels, the 25-06 is a wonderful varmint/antelope/deer cartridge. Heck, I even cleanly took a large bull elk with mine this fall, granted; it was only 100 yds, but I don't consider any of these to be 400 yd elk cartridges.

I own both. My 243 is scary accurate, but I won't try to kill an Axis deer with one again. It's why I bought my 6.5 CM. It is a little extra and doesn't recoil much more. IMO - it is the ideal SA deer cartridge. Only the 7mm08 gives it a good run for the title, but ammo availability gives the 6.5CM the nod

6.5CM is the result of great marketing skills, lots of funding thru Hornady, onslaught of new shooters/hunters, and good ballistics. .243 has been around for many years and will be for many more to follow. It has its place in the arena of hunting/shooting. The trouble with 6.5CM is the hype has many believing it’s the “do all” cartridge for everything.

I own and hunt with a 243, but the 6.5 CM matches up more directly with the 7mm08, since both can throw 120 and 140 grain bullets like the 6.5 CM. I just don’t find any need for the 6.5 verses the 3 rounds (243/7mm08/308) that come from this one great case. Good video, now go do the 7mm08 vs the 6.5CM and you will see that the 6.5 is 90% of the 7mm08.

If you want your kids to start hunting then the 243 is a great way to go. I would first let them shoot a 22 at beer or soda cans for a year or two under your direct supervision. Train them on gun safety too. Then let them carry an empty 243 around camp and hunting to make sure you never see the barrel pointing at anyone. They can get used to shooting it on target with you. The recoil is light, but that's what is needed for a youngster who may only weigh 90 to 110 pounds. You don't want them to fear the trigger and close their eyes. They need to develop confidence and enjoy the experience. 243 is a great way to get them hunting with you. 😊

Always makes me laugh when I hear people at deer camp say that the 6.5cm does not have enough energy or that it makes small holes that don’t leave blood trails. The 243 has been very effective at killing whitetail for decades with a smaller diameter bullet and less energy. The cm is just a very efficient round that kicks very little with great sectional density and high bc bullets. People underestimate the advantage of low recoil at any age of shooter. It also now happens to be so popular that the ammo is as available as other traditional hunting rounds. This makes it very popular with people who don’t roll their own. Great comparison between 2 superb hunting rounds.

Gentlemen, let me give you a South American vision from an anti-arms country. Argentina. Some time ago I discovered a book that told you to choose long or short action, slow or heavy. It showed 308 and 30-06 or like light bullets 270 and 243. Well, I fell for the 270 but since it makes a lot of noise, I use the 223 for practice, which with a hornet charge I can practice at 700 meters. with 223 and 270 I cover everything. There are no good guns here, I will chamber a 29-inch barrel from a valmet 22 lr at 22/270...... the story is that I am using 223 and 22/270..... I could have used 243, yes but I didn't find a barrel, look how a 55 bullet is and put it in front of a 270 and it's a huge difference, all these 6.5 are the same as the 270 or the 7 mm. unavailable in my country. Conclusion: with a 223 and a 243 you are covered for most hunting, if you want a better one, make a 6-06 or 6/284

Like I said before the 243 is a under-rated cartridge. Iv shot 243s for over 30 years. Loaded with 65gr vmax bullets its a coyotes worst nightmare, and iv shot thousands of them with 243s. Now biggame I reload a 80gr ttsx. Its amazing what it does. Drops deer like a hammer. Iv even shot moose with them, and my wife also. Hit behind the shoulder, never went 10 yds. They are easy to shoot and extremely accurate, and if you do your part, they will do there's. Don't make up for poor shooting with a magnum caliber .

Both really good carthridges in their own rights, but clearly there is a lot more potential with the 243 as a varmint carthridge based on bullet selection..... and the 6.5 CM has lot more potential as a deer carthridge. Surely, both can do a little of what the other one can do. A great competitor to the 243 Win would be something like the 6mm Creedmore.... it can do everything the 243 can plus being a long range target carthridge.

And oftentimes the difference between coming home and saying yeah I saw some animals or yeah I got one comes down to a focal point of making a shot. So investing the money on a custom Barrel can make the difference on a big hunt that you have spent a lot of money and work and effort on. Target shooting doesn't involve anywhere near the effort or investment of money that big game hunts nowadays require. Unused game tag soup doesn't taste very good to me.

It would be interesting to compare rifle design in rifles chambered in both cartridges. It was my understanding that rifles in both 6.5 Creedmoor and 6 Creedmoor offerings were designed with "target" rifle chambers/bores. I don't believe I've ever seen a blued Winchester Mod 70 with a standard profile barrel in 6.5 Creedmoor. I've seen a bunch of those rifles in .243 Win. I asked a deer if he would rather be shot with a 243 or a 6.5 Creedmoor and the deer couldn't tell the difference. I have been shooting 243 for decades. A 243 with a 1 in 8 twist 26 to 28 inch barrel puts the 6.5 creedmore in the dust. There are some highly misguided newbies who think a 6 mm Arc is equal to a 243. I have shot many 1000s of rounds of 243. 243 shoots 300 to 600 fps faster than any 6mm arc load.

A 1 in 10 twist 243 really kind of limits your possibilities in bullet weights. Savages 9.25 twist opens the door a little bit your mileage may vary I can get 105 green burgers too stabilize very well. And then you get to something like a Ruger rpr or somebody's custom 243 it changed the barrel twist and it changes the whole ball game of what the 243 can do.

Deer can be 80 pounds or 250 pounds. If you don't mind tracking a deer for some distance without much of a blood trail, if any, either one of those rounds will work fine. After all a 22 LR will kill a deer. That is if you live in open country where tracking is not an issue. If you live in northern Minnesota and the deer you shoot commonly run around 180-200 pounds a 7mm or larger caliber generally provides a person with a good blood trail when heavier bullets are used. Deer shot normally will head for the thickest cover that is available. Tracking them can be a real problem with a poor or no blood trail. From what I have seen it would appear to me that many deer are lost due to the use of the smaller calibers. The deer run a long way and are impossible to track if there is no snow. Even with snow tracking a deer with no blood trail to follow can be very difficult. If you have a specific reason to use a small caliber on large deer be especially careful to place your shot perfectly. If you do not have a need to use a small caliber do yourself a favor and use a larger caliber. A 30 cal. 180 grain will get the job done every time. With a reasonable hit there will be a blood trail every time.

I see a lot of comments that Deer shot with the 6.5 calibers don't leave a blood trail, the problem falls into its misunderstanding, for instance the 6.5 creed or the .264 cal bullets run a very high sectional density, so the 6.5 creed with a 140 grain bullet and comes out fairly slow but with its high coefficient out performs the .308 because of this coefficient, it doesn't get tossed around as much as a .308 and works good to hit steel targets out to 1000 yards and beyond, but it doesn't carry energy and all that was needed, but hunting is, of course, totally different now energy is more important so now dropping down to 120 to 130 grain weight the velocity goes way up sectional density drops along with coefficient, so using the 130 grn bullet you have plenty of energy all you need to 500yds the sectional density drops to .264 now when the animal is drilled at any yardage to 500yds the bullets will work great and you will have blood all over the place but they usually never get past 20 yrds but take the hype and throw it away, the problems that come are from the heavier bullets and their higher sectional density they poke small holes in and out and hardly a blood trail, so for example the 130grn bullet compared to the .308 180grn would be close in sectional density. That's the problem. The 6.5 bullets are just to darn good, and dropping down in weight is the drt recipe, the Hornady Inerlock 129grn or the Nosler 120 ballistic tip is the deer dead right there recipe, I just thought I'd share for some strange reason everyone has to shoot deer with those stupid heavy bullets, I've seen it myself and utube videos time after time they get the same results the deer runs off because of that heavy bullet, well I hope this rambling of mine helps. Aim small, good hunting, GOD bless.

Same shite, different smell. If you getting it to hunt with, up to 300 lbs game at or under 300 yards, the 243 Winny shines brightly. If your looking to shoot paper and steel at longer range, that's what the 6.5 Greedy Creedy was designed for. Please don't poke game with target bullets. RW, I've never bought into the reason the 243 was successful and not the 244/6mm Rem was barrel twist. In the 1950s and early 60s the 243 had better known writers behind it. Basically a better ad campaign. Still nothing like the ad campaign behind the 6.5 Creed. A comparison between the 6.5 Creed and the 260 Rem would be interesting. The 260 is a fantastic cartridge that has been collecting dust since it was introduced. Just another Remington orphan. Keep well and happy Thanksgiving. Cheers, Jeff

The Creedmoor with a 140 grain bullet to me is a stupid mistake with bullets from 100 to 130 it's ideal, with the 130s it deer deadly to five hundred yards but the 243 is not a good choice for that type of range and since use of the lighter weight bullets and the design of the chamber the bullets don't impede on powder and the twist rate is 1-8, the 243 are from 1-9 to 1-10, so the comparison is really not a good one, but the comparison to the 260 rem is close with a 1-9 twist rate, but it goes back to the design shorter but fatter is the creed and you can squeeze a little more in the creed, but the only thing is available rifles the 260 is a waiting game but the creed are all over the place as I found out since I was after the 260 rem to start out but bought the creed because it was on hand, so with the creed and its shorter but fatter case its more efficient powder burn and longer chamber dimensions is a plus and the twist and not only do I have these rifles but I also been hand loading for 40+ years and the Creedmoor is extremely accurate with 99%of the bullets and if the 140 grain bullets are used it way better to get the 6.5 PRC with it bigger case so you can get the faster velocity you just can't get with the Creedmoor even with the 26 inch barrel, yes they really over hyped the creed and it is not a elk cartridge to me because it drops your yardage to about 275 yards my 300win for example is good to 700 yards far as energy goes and conditions, so if your rifle is kept to 1400 to 1600 flbs which will dictate your range, but with all this hoopla the 243,260 rem and the 6.5 creed are all excellent deer cartridges some just have a little more technology built-in but we also have a great deal of more hi-tech bullets available, so if it's deer and varmints 243 should be just fine, for deer to mule deer the 6.5 creed is fine, and for the bigger critters the PRC'S and above, I prefer the 325WSM or the 300 win mag, these are my choices everyone has their own tastes or choice and location of need. Well, this was my 2 cents worth. Aim small, good hunting, GOD BLESS.
