Toyota Celica VVTL-i 190 T-Sport Review | Budget Honda Integra DC5?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, I review a 7th generation Toyota Celica that's not looked at fondly in the history books but it's an excellent bang for buck bargain compared to a Honda Integra DC5 AKA Acura RSX as we didn't get that car in the UK so when you factor in the import fees, they're worth well over £10,000 on the used market and a similar Celica can be had for just a few grand. Can the Honda be that much better?

    I love these cars, I had the same model you were testing, the Gen 7 TSport. The error you made is that the TS does not have a VVTi as such, the VVTi is the engine in the 140bhp version. The TS has the VVTLi, the L means lift Intelligence, thats what you were experiencing at 6300 revs when the Lift cam kicks in and the engine has apparently a 20 bhp boost, below this point the engine is very similar to the 140 bhp version, which makes it ideal as a daily driver which you can gain a significant boost for the top 2000 revs up to the redline.

  • @craig357
    @craig357 Жыл бұрын

    Have the GT TRD version (35mm lower standard). Old ECU revs to 8400 RPM before red line. Regular oil changes always ideal. Check lift bolts (cheap to replace). Through the country lanes not many higher performing cars can live with it. Screams after 6200 when lift comes in and it's a shove in the back as she takes off. This engine (2ZZGE) was developed by Yamaha and used by Lotus. It is reliable if you do basic services. Common faults if buying one: Check timing cover gasket as they tend to leak higher miles. Most believe it leaks from the tensioner o-ring but usually the timing cover gasket and can be a pain to fix as tight. Change spark plugs to IK20TT (Denso). Stick to KYB shocks unless getting good coil-overs. Clean throttle body and MAF (easy job). Check sills. Keep VVT filter and VVTLi filters clean (inspect/change/carb clean). Easy job with basic mechanical knowledge. Oil pump is prone to blow apart if downshifting into red line too aggressively so be wary! Change the oil sump to the 1ZZ engine (140 BHP). It is baffled and helps oil pick up/prevent starvation when high speed cornering/track runs. Direct bolt on. Weird Toyota never did this? You can upgrade them via se7en Motorsports. They are UK based and offer a Rotrex super charger kit that takes it (no internal mods to engine or gearbox hence safe) to 320 BHP. ECU is NOT programmable. You need a stand alone ECU to mess about with any tuning. Monkey Wrench Racing (MWR) in USA offers so many upgrades and original/aftermarket parts. Good SS Cat back exhaust helps as does high flow cat. Use shell nitro once in a while. Might need to re-mortgage house though at today's New World Order rip you off prices. If buying one, join Celica Club UK. Great place for info/help/sourcing parts original/aftermarket. Great review.

    1zz pan is not actually baffled, it only has the windage trays on the pan instead of the underside of the engine in the 2zz. it is not an upgrade and can cause issues, moroso pan is the only to get an actual baffled pan for it

  • @brianmessemer2973

    @brianmessemer2973

    I agree with everything this owner says - excellent comments and advice to potential owners. One thing I'd say though is if you're going to track the car you should absolutely get the Moroso baffled sump for the 2zz. Very expensive but you'll blow the engine due to oil starvation in a high speed corner if you don't, so it's absolutely worth it. What "baffles" me is why Toyota made a beautiful high revving Pavarotti engine and gave it an inadequate oil sump from the factory.

    I absolutely love the Celica. As you were saying, for the price it's amazing. The driving experience is amazing. It handles amazing. The steering is pinpoint. Personally, I don't care about interior. Its a car to drive. I don't need all that poshy interior shit. It's the most fun car I have ever driven. The reliability is amazing as well. I love them so much it's why I have 2 of them. Love this car. Lastly, you look like you're having fun driving that car. Life is a journey...enjoy the ride

    Yes, that's correct. I didn't go into detail in regards to the difference between VVT-i and VVTL-I. Both are the same but the latter is more aggressive and provides better response due to the "lift" as per the letter L in the term. It's similar to VTEC's single cam vs dual cam

    Incredible car, very underrated, the only thing that needs another oil pan because if it exceeds 1.1g of lateral pressure in track it runs out of oil and breaks. also needs an oil pump if it rotates above 8,800rpm, in normal conditions nothing happens with proper maintenance they are still circulating many 2zzge with over 300,000 miles without repairs as a very reliable engine with the only flaw in the tunning/turbo the pistons due to high compression, if they are changed in low compression you have a reliable 450hp, but the transmission cannot withstand more than 350-400Nm, but the solution is e153 gearbox, as a 100% factory motor it can easily and safely go to 360-380hp with compressor/rotrex, I have seen even with 200.000miles. Also the gl4 75w90 is great for trasmision and not gl5 because destroy the synchros. as a former owner of ep3 typer k20a2 I have to say that he has nothing to envy from that!

    Wicked to see a review. Few points! Have owned the most GT Celicas in the UK. What makes this car so special is the nimble handling -> That was the designers scope when producing this masterclass. At the time this on par with mclaren producing 100bhp per litre. No other 1.8 was producing these figures in 1999 (190 celica became the T Sport) That was groundbreaking at the time! That "analogue" experience you feel is to die for which is why the celica will always be remembered. By the way every owner should install a short shifter as its essential for the celica to throw quickly which suits the long clutch

It has character. It's exciting to drive. The look on your face when you hit lift says it all. The same 2zz-ge engine powers the Lotus Elise. Good review man, in Canada we say se-leeka too. I will say the biggest downfall of these cars is their rear visibility and blindspots. 99.9% of people will think Im crazy or full of shit but, I traded a 01 phoenix yellow ITR for my then brand new 03 GTS. Granted, I couldnt appreciate the Type R then but when I was 19 I thought it felt cheap and tinny due to it being stripped down..it felt like a civic to my inexperienced youth. The Celica felt solid and more luxurious if you will. Kind of wish I had kept now as it's worth more now. Im on my 2nd Celica now, 02 Panasonic/TRD GTS. The 03 is around..needs restoring which I hope to begin this summer.

    Late comer to this video here, however re your comments on the clutch, back in the day I had this car and there was no such issue using the clutch. Didn’t have to fully press it down to change gear. Mine was similar to any prior manual car I had back then. I’d say if you had to press all the way down, then something was wrong, maybe needed adjusting. Just saying from my own experience with the car, albeit was some 15 years back or so.

    Driving a manual car and getting comfortable is a hard thing to gauge. You need to be able to reach the biting point without fearing stalling the car as well as having somewhere to rest your left leg in-between shifts and having enough legroom. I've only really felt comfortable in BMW manual cars if I'm honest!

    Allow the yanks calling it a Silly ka. I miss my 190 and it was surprisingly practical. Fitted 2 mountain bikes with both wheels off and seats down and the boot was surprisingly roomy. Things I hated The Powerband/Gearing. The high lift transition point was pretty high. It meant that even with redlined shifts, you still had to change the power. I didn't want to invest the £1k to fit new cams to bring lift on 500rpm lower. Don't get me wrong, I grew up on IL4 sportsbikes, so I loved the engine's characteristics. But the gearing/revs are nowhere near as good as a K20 equipped honda. The water leaks. I used to have a nice puddle in my back seat bench from where water would pool in from my sunroof guttering. Could never really get to the bottom of that before I sold the car It eats radiators. Nearside/gutter would cause corrosion leading to the inevitable punched core and escalating temps Things I loved - neutral handling - the looks - very timeless and you can be anything from a boy race to a discerning old chap and still suit the car

    @@CarNitty Ironically, it's the only I've had in my ownership that's ULEZ compliant! Go figure! These days, I've become a diesel dad, with the need to have acres of boot space for outdoor pursuits. As fun as a rear wheel drive car is, an S204 C250d remapped or an E70 X5 40 with 360bhp and 700Nm will never be as involving to drive as the Gen 7. Yeah, diesels have all the torque, but there's nothing more rewarding than working for your gears and apexing right. I lowered mine 30mm on eibachs, which made no end of difference to the weight transfer (and also ruined the fuck out of my splitter on the back roads and farm tracks where I lived). Hugely underrated car, with dwindling numbers. That being said the Celica Club was a very useful forum and community.

    I'm glad you had your selfish period to open a small sports coupe before now settling for a wagon. Diesel's are great for many things and the torque is crazy but there's no reward of revving it out whatsoever and I'm sure that's very obvious compared the 2ZZ 9k RPM VVTLI

    @@CarNitty I used to have a 94 Kawasaki ZXR250C with a straight through 4-1 exhaust. That had a soft redline at 18500RPM. I had quite a lot of fun screaming that through the Blackwall Tunnel or Strand Underpass when I was in my late teens. Me in multi storey car parks, such as Brent Cross would get people turning heads. Thing only went as fast as 105mph, mind, but like with many Jap N/A engines, it's that sense of connection and reward. That being said, I'd rather still have internal combustion and turbo whistle instead of the utter silence of an EV... knowing that Miss Daisy will still dick me off the lights til 30 in her ID3!!! • @BennyJ69
    @BennyJ69 Жыл бұрын

    Sorry to be that guy but this isn't technically a Toyota equivalent of the DC5. Toyota made the Celica 190 as an answer to the DC2, being the same engine size etc. you can see that they did a great job! I believe the DC2 is still faster around a track though? Not that it matters, I'd choose a Celica over Integra purely just on the it being 3 times less the price. I think you can still make the Celica 190 compete against the DC5 and it beat it on the road. I have a friend who's got a Corolla T sport, pushing probably 220+bhp and it's a monster. Beating Focus STs and all sorts on the motorway.
