Find a friendly mechanic who can do a code check on the engine. Trying to guess the problem, then swapping parts until you find the cause is expensive.

To anyone who thinks thats too much to spend...think about it....lets say you need a brake job, some mechanics charge hundreds of dollars for it, so you do it yourself, then next week, you need an oil change, that might cost $30-50, and if you drive as much as i do, thats an oil change every other month, and by now, the tools have basically payed for themselfs and you have only done a couple things. Think about how much money you will save in the long run

I bought my ratchets, sockets, wrenches, and a screwdriver set up front(not too bad at Harbor Freight), but to manage the cost of tools I typically just buy them as needed for a job. Even the basic stuff you can buy on a per job basis as you build your tool set.

specifically rechargeable leds. The ones that run on alkaline drain too fast and costs more in the long run. I have a magnetic swivel led flashlight mount, and the pelican rechargeable led flashlight. Both being that is so convenient, even during the day.

Flashlights that have magnets usually have the magnets fall out within a few years due to cheap glue. I have the same Coleman brand LED head lantern I bought 10 years ago. It still works like new. I also have a Craftsman 19.2v hand held fluorescent light that works from a drill battery. I've used it enough that I've had to replace the fluorescent tube in it. It puts out a lot of light over a big area. Sears is great about having spare parts. I use the same battery in several other tools (vacuum, impact driver, tire pump, drill).
wow, never thought about the copper in the cables.. great thought..

JP ElectroFlame actually silver and gold are your best conductors but you won't find wire in that lol. A long time ago in some testing for doe and other governmental places they actually used silver wire and plating. Aluminum vs copper on the other you'll usually over size aluminum one size up to match copper. Say you need a number 6 copper then you'll need a number 4 aluminum to be equivalent sometimes bigger depending on the amperage draw
basically, if you buy your own tools for that 260$ approximately. YOU SAVE A TON ON REPAIRS. some garages charge over a 100$ an hour in manual labor rates. so 260 in tools or 1000's in garage repairs.

Fascinating information about the difference in conductivity levels between copper and aluminium jumper cables. Many thanks Scotty - you're the best !
Always good stuff. Thanks
SCOTTY YOUR THE GREATEST!!!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In addition: 1.Breaker Bar 2.Torque Wrench 3.Multi-meter 4.Pry Bar 5.Vice Grip 6.Oil Filter adjustable Wrench 7.Penetration oil (or DW40 at minimum). BTW, for the sockets, make sure you have both Deep sockets and Shallow (or short) Sockets. Impact wobble swivel extension are nice too. Don't forget Extension bars and maybe some spark plug magnetic sockets (14, 16 & 21mm).
I keep leaning so much watching your videos! Thank you scotty!
Love your channel. Been following you for 6-7 years and I learned a lot for cars. Love it!
I agree about the jumper leads, I was lucky to buy a set from my local army stores some years back, they were very heavy duty made from heavy duty copper welding cable.
You're a Champ Scotty. Thanx for the clip.
True top tip Scotty! Spend that bit more on decent thick proper copper jump cables DON'T skimp!

Instead of a $200+ obd2 scanner, I use the Torque app available in the Google Play Store (free version or $5 for pro) and any $5 - $15 obd2 Bluetooth dongle on Ebay will connect to it. I'd like to add c-clamps and a decent magnetic led light for working underneath vehicles as well.

12mm here. I've lost two now. I lost a first one, then after getting a 2nd one in a pack with a few others, I only used it once and it's gone walkies too. That one stumped me as I only use them here at home and there was nowhere else it shouldn't have been but with my other tools. So annoying and really pissed me off I lost that one too. So now I'm down to using a high speed carbon one from my high end set.

Scotty, kudos on your production value improvements! I've learned much and saved God knows how much fixing my stuff myself. Video request: I'd love to see a video where you show your favorite cleaners, oils, filters, etc and why and your least favorite and why. Example: I use x brand of air filter because it's way better than y. Could be multiple categories: oil, oil filters, fuel filter, air filter, transmission fluid, brake grease, anti seize, etc. Your 50 years of experience probably means you've tried them all by now and know which is best. Another good one could be part brands. Example: Dorman sucks, Moog is great, etc

Toyota, the ubiquitous 12-mm & 14-mm bolt heads!! P.S. I inherited my Dad's old hand tools. He operated a machine & welding shop. His tools & their cases came to me dirty, greasy, rusted to H*ll. Took me 2-months & loads of elbow grease to degrease, de-rust & polish every single one. Hammers, sockets, pliers, tin snips, e.g. Good solid American-made tools from 1940s & 1950s. So proud to have them, now shiny "like new" again. I use them all the time doing "Scotty Stuff." Hefty tools, nothing like the CCC* sold as "tools" nowadays. (*cheapchinacrap)
Your the man scotty
I got an Autel MaxiCOM MK808 scan tool. Got it on special for $350 with a coupon discount. Well worth the money when working on mine and relatives' vehicles.
Some of the best tools are here on KZread.
Nice set of rubber gloves, stubby wrenches and 3/8 U.S made breaker bar also

good job,, gotta have tools
Thanks Scotty. I do have most of those and a few more. I just maybe need a better scan tool.
I like Scotty Kilmer because he is down to earth sensible about car care!
Scotty's big pimpin in that big Lincoln!
It is sad about the Sears stores closing I used to go to one at a mall to get tires put on an to get an alignment, while they worked on my cay we walked around the mall ate ETC.You are right about jumper cables years ago I was trying to jump my sister and her husbands car off I had a newer set of jumper cables they would not jump,my brother in law pulled out a pair of old greasy looking cables and the car jumped right off.I have a lot of tools I just don't have a scan tool.
cool products
Awesome! Can you do a video on the best tools from harbor freight?
Excellent .. I have all 5 though my OBD2 reader is a little crappy.
I'd recommend getting two middle range socket sets if you only do the odd repair. I spent about £80 on two sets, one with a large socket wrench, the other a small set with 1/4 socket set drive. The small set is the one I use most as in engine bays, the larger one often doesn't fit.
As long as the jumper cables are a heavy gauge(Cu or Al), they'll work. The 10 gauge jumper sets are garbage. They can't supply enough current like the 4 or 6ga wire sets.
The best youtuber ever
That's an awesome Pittsburgh jack. Some of the best money I've spent.
