    By what measure is Gattaca underrated? It is very highly rated and has won several awards. And it is a cult classic even if it performed poorly at the box office. Plus it is one that people always talk about. The movies on this list half of them I never even heard about. I would much rather have a list of movies that many people missed than a list of movies everyone talks about.

  • @elseoner2394

    John McDonald the poor box office sales and being a lack of household name is what makes it underrated. Underrated doesn't mean not good it means not that many people have heard of it compared to how great it was. it should be far more well-known.

  • @koloth5139

    @koloth5139

    You seem to misunderstand my point. Gattaca is not underrated. It has won 6 of the 11 awards it was nominated for, it has mostly positive reviews. And it tops many a best sci-fi list. That is the very definition of well known. This is a list of movies people don't know because people barely talk about them. I don't know who you hang around but I have talked to people I thought had little to no interest in sci-fi that knew Gattaca.

I normally don't much care for the woman's narration of these - sometimes to where as much as I'd like to continue watching and get the data, I have to turn it off. I would say this is the best that she has ever done - it's the 1st time I could tolerate her pretty much all the way through and she didn't go over the top with sarcasm, etc. :-)

So all I could remember was the Robot being taught to smoke. So everytime I googled "Smoking Robot" I'd be led to a page on Bender from Futurama. Thank you for solving that age old question of mine. That film always resonated strongly for me. And as you can tell, I never quite forgot it.

  • @DarthMohammedRules

    @DarthMohammedRules

    +Harry S I honestly think The Thirteenth Floor beat The Matrix to the punch on what was supposed to be the The Matrix's own ending. That is to say, I'm totally convinced that it was the Wachowski's orginal intention to reveal that the "real world" in their film(s) actually turns out to be another "layer" of matrix. A matrix within a matrix, if you will. That premise would've perfectly explained a bunch of the shit in the Matrix sequels that made no sense, like Neo having "matrix-like" powers outside the matrix. And from a practical standpoint (as far as The Matrix universe goes), if you're an artificial hyper-intelligence trying to enslave mankind essentially through some kind of super-real virtual reality, what's the best security safeguard against the possibility of some of those humans "waking up" (which the machines had to know was a possibility)? Another false-reality layer on top of the first. But then Thirteenth Floor kinda did that idea before the Wachowski's got around to their ending, pretty much forcing them to do something different with The Matrix. Just my opinion. But I do think The Matrix would've wrapped up much neater with a Thirteenth Floor type of ending. It would've just made more sense.

    1983's "Brainstorm." I saw this for the first time in 2015 and it held up incredibly well, including the plot focusing on still-relevant issues about tech misuse and the military-industrial complex. Basically it got shelved for 2 years because there was a notorious death of one of the actresses. The film deserved way better and I often see it - very deservedly - on "underrated" lists all the time.

    I don't know what people think science fiction is? Starships battleing in the space? Time travelling? Aliens? It's much more than that. One of the best underrated sci-fi (B) movies I ever seen, there was not a single "space/cosmos" scene, not a single fire, none sofisticated gizmo/technology, no aliens and the very unique time travelling was the same every single one of us is able to experience. It's called aging. As a matter of fact, almost of the entire movie consists in a group of college teachers reunned in a living room just talking...

    “Moon” is one of the most over-rated SF movies of all time. I still can’t believe it was given a Hugo Award. A fellow longtime fan and I saw it together shortly after it opened. All the way through we kept turning to each other to whisper, “But that doesn’t make sense!” The writer/director's intentions were good, but he didn’t really understand SF extrapolation. Instead, he arbitrarily assembled a bunch of SF tropes and linked them with an illogical plot. Both the basic premise and the “big surprise” are utterly ridiculous. The whole setup makes no scientific or economic sense.

    I like WatchMoJo and have a suggestion, while watching this video, I would see the description and cuts, and go yeah, I want to watch, but then would have to rewind to get back to the name of the movie to source for watching later. Anyway, it would be cool at the end of each segment, something like, "Did you like Primer (2004)" for the last few seconds, before jumping to the next one. Hope other people would agree? Again love the videos.

    Silent Running was the most moving sci-fi movie I have ever seen. It was geared toward the environmental movement of it's time. Some have suggested that R2D2 was imagined based on the endearing little robots of this movie. 2010 was very good, a great wrap up for the story line. Moon was a surprise for me: was not expecting it to be as good as it was. The others on this list just didn't float my boat. I would add Solaris to the mix.

    I actually agree with this to a point. I think equilibrium should have been number 1 simply because it is just as good as any major film (seriously, its as good as any award winning sci fi action film), has a great story but, like, nobody knows about it. its on netflix. I'd say pitch black should have been way up there but, it really wasn't under rated once the chronicles of riddick became a thing.

  • @swamdono

    @swamdono

    8 жыл бұрын

    Some interesting points you guys have got. I agree that Equilibrium just came out at the wrong time, so everyone just compared it to The Matrix. but then, if it weren't for that film, Equilibrium wouldn't exist. Pitch Black should definitely be on the list. I think it was superior to the other Riddick films, as it had a more human feel to it. It didn't have the silly 'magic' that the other films had. I'm surprised not to see Coherence on here though. Especially since Primer was. If you guys haven't seen it, I'd recommend it.

    swamdono I saw Equilibrium on Netflix. at the final battle I'm like, "Wait. How is this on Netflix? Netflix usually has the shitty sequels or B movies. This is EXcellent!" I was pleasantly surprised with everything from the acting to the scenes and choreography. As far as dystopian movies go, its one of the best IMO. You can tell they put a good amount of thought into it. Equilibrium should have gotten at least as much press as Minority Report.

    You covered many favorites, thank you. Two that were missed that are high on my list are... 2009's Pandorum starring Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster is a masterpiece that remains on my best sci fi of all time list. The other is Supernova starring James Spader, Angela Bassett, Lou Diamond Phillips, Robin Tunney and Robert Forster. This film had amazing visuals, flawless acting, brilliant twists and the fate of the universe spinning out of control as they hurtle toward a star going supernova. It bombed, critics thrashed it but I don't care. While it ranks significantly lower than Pandorum on my list... I love that film. It resides in my regular sci fi rotation right beside all my other favorites including several that were featured here. :) Awesome selections y'all :)

    My father in the 1970's used to collect anthologies which were paperbacks with sci fi short stories, including many with Hugo award winners. One short story I read around '79 or '80 was basically the entire Primer movie. I read another short story called By His Bootstraps which was identical to the scene in Cube where the person as he entered the room saw himself leaving by the other door.

One minor note, which other people may have already addressed: I'm also glad that Heavy Metal made the list. However, it seems people misunderstand the title, which is NOT based on the music in the film. Rather, the film is based on the adult animated magazine Heavy Metal, which contains some of the best illustrating and writing I have ever seen.

It seems I have struck a nerve with other Brazil fans with my comments. I never meant to say Brazil is not a high quality film. It certainly is. THX 1138 from Lucas. It's THE single most underrated good sci-fi, in fact so underrated that it couldn't even get into a video about underrated sci-fi movies :P

    +1 for that, its an amazing film and deserves a lot more recognition than it gets (I think everyone has forgotten that Lucas actually made movies before he made Star Wars...)

    THX 1138 has a great line from Donald Pleasence's character who is the only one seemingly benefiting from the completely controlled surveiled, computer intruded world. "Why are you smiling all the time?" "Because I'm the one who programs the computers." Still hugely relevant! I guess I think it gets recognition from Sci-Fi fans, though, so I understand why it's not on the list.

    Best Lucas film. But it is a film for adults, not for children, like SW.

    At the top of my list is L'invenzione di Morel, a 1974 Italian sci-fi film by Emidio Greco or L'Invention de Morel (French TV movie, 1967 by Claude-Jean Bonnardot). Both movies are based on the novel "La invención de Morel" (1940) by Adolfo Bioy Casares. The script is undeniably brilliant, the mystery is incredible, its philosophy is deep.

    Cube. A very simple, but IMHO very good movie. I think it qualifies as sci-fi. Don't bother with the sequels though...

    "Cube" was a good paranoia movie that was, for the most part, impossible. "Cube 2" was more solid sci-fi with an attempt to show a hypercube (a four-dimensional "cube") which, ultimately, was more satisfying, to me. I've not seen the third, although I'm told it's truly horrible.

    THX-1138 isn't exactly considered underrated. Colossus: The Forbin Project is a great movie not a lot of people know about. I'd forgotten about it until I saw your comment. Going to watch it now!

    Thank you, I was going to mention it myself. The Forbin Project was an intelligent well executed movie that I always watched when I got the chance. I haven't seen it in a long, long time. I'm wondering if it can still be watched without seeming to be terribly dated. I'm going to try and track it down and watch it again.

  • @nervchemnitz

    C:TFP has dated itself in the sense that it's a story that's really only possible in the 1970s tech age in the scenario of Cold War. Not sure a remake or update put into our modern times would even work outside of its time frame without it losing its uniqueness and edge and just becoming another SkyNet movie.

    I found a copy on DVD. While a 'bit' dated, it's still a good film. I found THX-1138 to be just, well, depressing.

    QuantumRift I watched Colossus: The Forbin Project last night. It's still a good movie and while it's definitely dated, I don't have any more issues with that than I do with movies from to 50's and 60's.. You just have to be willing to enjoy the story rather than the science - which is usually very wrong.. Lol
