Geoffrey Schotte I saw it in college with a friend of mine who had to watch it for a film class (she was studying cinematography). We sat there in complete silence through the whole thing (normally we'd chat through the movies) and when it was over, we looked at each other and just let out this huge sigh. What an incredible treat that was. I really should get myself a copy!

In Bruges is one of my favourite films of all time. Gleason is brilliant, Farrell showcases skills in this movie that we have rarely seen from him, and Fiennes is Fiennes (which means he's great). What about Dredd (Urban version)? I think that's one of the most visually exceptional movies in quite some time.

I found it really badly paced -- uneven to the point of near-whiplash -- but what it had going for it was a *lot*, notably the historical accuracy, the strength of the leading roles, and some of the battle scenes were downright superlative. The one where Balian takes his men out of the castle to engage Sulahadin despite enormous odds -- and in particular the first moment of impact -- stays with a person a long, long, *lonnnnnnnng* time afterward.

Good call on In Bruges. I would also add a brilliant comedy and parody of musical biopics, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. It was well received by critics, but a box office bomb. It does turn up occasionally on cable, unlike pretty much every film in this list, so perhaps it's not quite underrated enough.

A Scanner Darkly, Sunshine, Layer Cake, Inside Man, Children of Men, Snatch, The Darjeeling Limited (Wes Anderson)! Ppl should stop using the word underrated as a substitute to mean not commercially successful. Movies like In Bruges, The Fall, Mary & Max ...etc. we're rated...by lots of critics and were highly praised. Something good that was passed off as average or terrible by critics and pundits but is in fact worth a look, listen, taste or whatever the case, would be an item or experience that was underrated.

+TomgkTV... I don't remember exactly how it ends (although I do remember him NOT dying), but it was fucking amazing movie indeed. I remember having sat down to watch it out of boredom cause I had just watched all of the blockbusters of that time and wanted to watch another good movie, but - like I said - I had already watched all of them, and I sat down to watch Moon with little expectations. Needless to say the movie (more specifically, the hidden plot) kept me watching for 1 more minute, and another one... and another one... until the finale came and had my jaws dropping. I think I stood there in the chair during the ending credits rolling and contemplated what I had just seen for like 2-3 minutes straight (maybe more) before I even managed to close the VLC player, and even after I had closed it I was still unable to do anything for 1-2 more minutes. Just sat there in the chair and thought about how interesting and unpredictable the movie was :) ... Oh well, since we're at this anyway, may I also recommend Spectral (2016) to everyone? That movie was still kind of "under the radar" (well, I haven't heard / seen any trailer of it anyway, and only heard about the movie 1 year later), and - just like Moon - it was also underrated and extremely good movie. Seriously, go watch that movie everyone. It fucking kicks ass

The Fall is really a remake of an old obscure Bulgarian movie named Yo Ho Ho. Apart from changing the young male actor with a young female one, it is a quite straight up remake. Oh, and TONS more full of colour, which is part of why it is so great - the visuals are simply baffling in The Fall. If you get the chance, do watch the "making of" clips on the DVD.

Please understand that 'underrated' does not mean 'movie I never heard of', especially when one is hardly a movie fan, what is pretty obvious given the content of the videos. Seriously, 5 out of 10 movies mentioned received very positive reviews and awards and were also vastly popular among intended audiences. 'Moon' received rave reviews and was praised for being a rare hard-sf gem among modern science fiction movies. Script and performance were also noted for being top-notch. Nominated to 17 prestigious awards, won good half of them. 'The Guard' became and instant cult classic in Ireland, was considered the best movie of the year and gathered almost unanimously positive reviews (e.g. 94% rating on RT if this means anything). Again, nominated for almost twenty awards, won good half of them. 'Mary and Max' also received universally positive reviews, mainly thanks to great voice acting, clever script and well-executed black comedy. It also generated large revenue in all countries that screened it (for some reason in USA ot has been only released as video on demand). 'In Bruges' was universally praised, especially being a début for director and writer. Most reviews stress the great performance of the main cast and the intelligently contrived plot. Received several awards including Golden Globe. 'The Fall' and 'Valhalla Rising' received a similar treatment - these movies were almost universally praised by critics abroad for non-standard approach, but were also criticised for somehow incoherent plot that was by far outweighed by elaborate visuals (although the review were still pretty favourable). According to some American critics, 'The Fall' was one of the best movies of 2008, even accounting for the fact it was virtually a glamourized remake of the Bulgarian movie from the 1980's.

*Moon* is a homage to a specific 1960 novella, "Rogue Moon" by Algis Budrys. If you like that era SF you need to read it, though it might feel ponderous to today's fan. It is a very cinematic tale - I could "watch" it in all its 60s glory as I read it. *Moon* has Sam Rockwell, which is an advantage, but "Rogue Moon" explores the morality more.

The Fall and The Fountain, without question two of the most awe-inspiring cinematic experiences I have ever seen. I disagree, however, with the suggestion that The Fountain is unfocused. The exercise in making this film, I think, was challenging the correlation between multiple simultaneous story lines, each of which informs the main theme of searching for eternal life in contrasting yet identical narratives. Each narrative plays an essential role in supporting and informing the grand conflict, but at the same time, each is seeded by the necessity of the grand conflict. It's truly a mind-bending experience you just have to see for yourself.

Edward Hill I fully agree, Children of Men is superb! It's got to be one of my favourite films of that decade. Clive Owen has done some great stuff.

As for both Sunshine and Children of Men, if a movie is based on such a stupidly impossible initial premise (the Sun has to be reignited in 50 years? or ALL? women suddenly are unable to conceive?), then at least it shouldn't take itself seriously. Like I don't mind, Star Wars, LoTR or Spiderman - it's a fairy tale and it acts like one, so it's fine. We shouldn't be expected to give a creative license to any half-assed, lazy, brainless idea! Like they had no imagination to come up with a reason for a spaceship to go to the Sun? Or for a man to take care of a pregnant woman?

Hell yeah! Valhalla rising is one of my all time favorite movies. Mads Mikkelsen is amazing in it.

Always wanted to see it but never got around too it. Ended up passing on it back in the day for Centurion, which is also fantastic.

Speaking of Brendon Gleeson, He was also outstanding in Calvary (2014). Since you allowed animation on your list, might I suggest, The Illusionist (2010) or for that matter, The Triplets of Belleville (2003). One of the most ambitious Wachowski brothers films is the glorious, Cloud Atlas (2012) visually stunning, brilliantly plotted, and superbly cast. This film was way underrated.

It's called Psytrance ;). More particularly "full-on psytrance". Seeing this is the first comment I've found regarding the music, I thought I'd chip in ^^. Even more so, I'd like to know artist + trackname haha!

Nicolas Brandon No, The Guard just shouldn't have been. I love The Nice Guys and I don't doubt that The Guard is a great movie either, but neither of them is from the 2000's so neither should be on this list.
