Greatness is determined by one's superior mental ability which is employed in one's discipline or skill and that is demonstrated in Brian Lara's ability to concentrate for a longer period than any other batsman that has ever stood at the wicket . Bradman is the best of all time. Lara was a great batsman and a joy to watch, definitely deserving of his third spot, slightly edged out by Tendulkar for 2nd methinks. I would put Viv Richards ahead of Ponting though. Ponting always struck me as a capable and methodical batsman that was a bit of a workhorse. He had good pull shots and a capable cricket mind. Viv Richards however just exuded danger. He was more like a Dean Jones style of heavy hitter that could play just about any ball. Not only would a bowler have a hard time trying to work on a way of getting him out, but they'd be hard pressed to avoid being hit for 6 while trying to do so. So for my money it goes Bradman, Tendulkar, Lara, Richards, Ponting.

Although, he wore plastic cap to protect his head, imagine playing the best of bowlers without covering his face or very very delicate eyes. Furthermore, he had to practice at the Net Or in Domestic cricket in absence of any genuine pace bowler. Being opener & to carry the enormous pressure & responsibility during his playing days, when Indian batting were very weak & feeble. He is a real gem in Indian cricket.

Again a great list, putting Bradman at no 2 below Sachin was a courageous things to do- the Don averaged 100 plus in his away tests- amazing! However I am still inclined to agree with your choice of Sachin Tendulkar as the No 1 batsman of all time. He is. The don played only against England and maybe South Africa. Cricket was so different in his time. Sachin Tendulkar by all yardsticks is the best batsman of the world, no doubt about that! However I am just a bit uncomfortable with one choice - Greg Chapell. There are a number of batsmen from test playing nations who could be more than a match for Greg Chapell. Geof Boycott of England, Sunil Gavaskar of India, Javed Miandad and Younis Khan of Pakistan, Martin Crowe (whom Wasim Akram rated as the best player of swing bowling ever) of New Zealand, Allan Border of Australia, Hashim Amla of South Africa.... If Greg Chapell can be there so can any one from my list. I would have put Sunil Gavaskar there. Otherwise, an excellent list

Thank you! I felt the same way about Bradman and Sachin, Bradman only played in 2 countries (England and Australia) and only against England apart from 15 combined tests against India, South Africa, and West Indies who were all emerging nations at the time. Since Sachin has broken nearly every batting record over 200 tests, the #1 spot just had to go to him. #10 could've gone to any of those players you named, but Chappell was named "the best since Bradman" for a reason

If BC Lara would have been consistent like Ten, then definitely he would have played equal matches.. But he was not...so failing to keep consistency made him quit cricket..While Ten Kept consistency through out.. Further,,, Ten had advantage of starting career at 16, while Lara started at 21..!!!

Only records don't tell everything. Cricket is an entertaining game. People watch the game for entertainment and thrill. Richards, Lara, Kapil Dev, AB Divilliers and the likes entertain the spectators by thrilling display of fearless batting. Tell me how many ICC tournaments Tendulkar has won for India single handedly? Only Kapil has done that. Kapil along with Yuvraj and Dhoni are great entertainers. I rate them above Tendulkar. Only by amassing records one cannot be great.

Looking at an average Bradman is far better than Tendulkar but the quality of bowling Tendulkar faced, playing 200 test matches at such an average, playing also different format of the game i.e. odi at the same time, playing for 24 years with such a brilliance, playing against so many countries, being always under the technical analysis , scoring most centuries and most hundreds one may not always consider Tendulkar after Don .
