    Some test stats. Dennis Lillee 355 wickets at 2.99, Curtly Ambrose 405 wickets at 2.31, Malcolm Marshall 376 wickets at 2.68, Wasim Akram 414 wickets at 2.59, Richard Hadlee 431 wickets at 2.78, Kapil Dev 434 wickets at 2.78, Glen Mcgrath 563 wickets at 2.5. These were the best. Just because they all played over 70 tests and in different countrys and had economy below 3.

    Malcolm Marshall has the best stats because he nearly always bowled with great bowlers making it harder to get a good tally. If memory serves me he also bowled way less overs than the rest with a better strike rate. You also have to respect Kepil Dev, he had to bowl a serious amount of overs on pretty placid wickets. I don't have the same respect for Akram and Younis after the ball tampering scandal.

    Andy Roberts and Jeff Thompson need to be in. And 40 test cutoff should be applied. Impact should be important as statistics hence my case for Thompson - he brought shock and fear. Any attack needs that element. In those mid 70's series other bowlers had better statistics but opposing players tell that the Thomo factor was huge.

  • @robertcameron3709

    40 tests minimum. OK, well that gets rid of virtually every bowler and batsman who played before the second World War. So no Bradman or Hobbs, no Bill O'Reilly or Clarrie Grimmett, no S.F. Barnes or Victor Trumper. And, most importantly, no W.G.Grace the greatest cricketer who ever lived and the man who created modern batting. Without these men the modern game would not exist in its current form.

    Thommo has become somewhat overrated as the years go by and his legend grows. He could bowl a load of real old tripe at times, and was very inconsistent. Terrifying on his day to be sure, but not in the top 20 in my book

  • @baantalingngam

    @baantalingngam

    Thommo was definitely not considered "overrated" by those who had the misfortune to face him in the mid to late 70s. Interestingly in the WSC fastest bowler in the world competition in Perth in 1978, Thommo not only was fastest (Michael Holding and Imran Khan were 2nd and 3rd respectively), but also "most accurate", i.e. he hit the stumps the most times. Thommo took 200 wickets in 51 tests, an average of basically 4 per test, hardly that of a less than great bowler.

They scared the proverbial out of batsmen. Curtly and Garner would be next change. Shoaib Ahktar and Brett Lee would be in my top 20 too. Thanks for posting, very interesting. I think the cut off for players lists should be when teams went from steamboat travel to flying by planes - in the plane era players play more games, are generally fitter and more professional.

    Lillee and Thommo were frightening in Australia over a short period. Just as Mitchell Johnson was. I would rate greatness for longevity and ability in non Asian and Asian conditions higher ie versatility of skills. For me Marshall, Steyn, McGrath, Hadlee the greatest. Without relying purely on stats and looking at the prevailing playing conditions of the day, I think it is reasonable to include Lohmann and Barnes right at the top of this list.

    Yea by that reckoning you could even have the likes of Ryan Harris and Shane Bond in there, neither of whom should be in a list of the 20 greatest fast bowlers of all time to be fair. They both had the quality and therefore the potential I guess, but the point is they didn't have anything like the level of achievement that I believe should be required for such a list. Longevity and consistency of selection need to be big factors really. There are some notable deserving absences from your list. Andy Roberts probably comes to mind first. Also there is Kagiso Rabada, Courtney Walsh, Keith Millar, James Anderson, Kapil Dev, Bob Willis, Ian Botham, Brett Lee even though some of them were allrounders or had higher test averages, but the impact they made, especially for large periods of their careers, or in ODI cricket in addition to their test achievements, and where they had to take their wickets, - talking about Botham, Dev and Lee in particular. I know some experts question the fact sometimes, but there is no doubt in my mind that those 3 we're all great bowlers in their own different ways in my opinion. Also there are 2 newer up and comers who will both demand a place on a list in time, and already are, in Pat Cummins and Jasprit Bumra.

    This list not good enough. Kapil dev was a world record holder for many years and picked more wickets than most bowlers in this list. Even Dennis lillee ranked him above imran Marshall Hadley and botham The great thing about him was that he used to bowl without any support from other side. Batsmen did not play under pressure when playing against kapil. Most of the bowlers in this list had equally good bowlers supporting from other end to keep incessant pressure on batsmen

    This is a really interesting list and it gives hard facts that cannot be ignored. My only query is that it refers a lot to times when the game was very different. I think a cut-off at 1914 would make sense. It also depends on how you define a fast bowler. Anderson should be in there surely? Terrific posting nevertheless and thank you very much for doing it. Really interesting.

I'm glad the likes of Marshall, Steyn, Imran and McGrath are rated higher than Lillee and Thomson for the sheer versatility of skills across conditions, frightening though the latter were in the early to mid 70s Australian conditions

    It's still a pretty good list to be fair and you certainly have most of the most important and best names on there for sure. It's good to do lists of the very greatest as you have done, but I personally, as a cricket tragic and total nerd, like to make lists of what I guess you could call the minor greats. Bowlers who have achieved world class performance over a long period without quite having the impact of those very greatest. It's a long list but it's still a cool look at wonderful bowlers, who have admittedly had their ups and downs, but hey that's cricket for you. The great leveller. My list of them, who I haven't mentioned as yet in my previous comments includes Brian Statham, Sturat Broad, Darren Gough, Andrew Caddick, Andrew Flintoff, Matthew Hoggard, John Snow, Chaminda Vaas, Javagal Srinath, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Wesley Hall, Charlie Griffiths, Kemar Roach, Shaoib Akhtar, Mohammed Asif, Lasith Malinga, Fazal Mahmood, Morne Morkel, Jaques Kallis, Vernon Philander, Jeff Thomson, Craig McDermott, Bruce Reid, Merv Hughes, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Johnson, Heath Streak, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazelwood, Colin Croft, Ian Bishop, Jason Gillespie, Terry Alderman, Chris Cairns, Neil Wagner, Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Graham Dilley, Graham McKenzie, Jack Cowie, Peter Pollock, Mike Procter, Clive Rice, Garth Let Roux, Vince Van der Bijl. Some of them South Africans who didn't get to play much (if any) test cricket but who would've be superb test bowlers had they done. Some other names who achieved less but we're a bit unlucky statistically given how good they really were include Umar Gul, Danny Morrison, Angus Fraser, Geoff Lawson, Richard Collinge, Chris Martin, Wayne Daniel, Winston Davis, Sylvester Clarke, Umesh Yadav. I know, the list could go on, but they're all wonderful bowlers. Some of the current crop are seriously good as well, such as Hasan Ali, Mohammed Abbas, Shaheen Afridi, Jason Holder, Jayden Seals, Kyle Jameson, Matt Henry, Jofra Archer, Ben Stokes, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortge, Mustifaza Rahman, etc, and many more yound talents coming out of India, Pakistan, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, England and the West Indies. Even Sri Kanka, not noted for producing great pace bowlers, look like they could be producing a couple of pretty exciting ones too.

    Exactly, Dennis Lillee is Australia's greatest ever fast bowler, it's not even close. Include all his missing WSC SuperTests, Vs the mighty West Indies & all World XI matches, Lillee's record is missing 112 wkts from just 22x unofficial Tests. His true record is 92x Tests, 467 wkts @ 23.91, 29x 5wkt, 9x 10wkt hauls. BBI 8/29 Vs 1972 World XI, BBM, 12/89 Vs WSC World XI, 12/92 Vs 1972 World XI. Lillee was the No. 1 wkt taker in WSC SuperTests with 88 wkts, Andy Roberts 2nd with 50. Lillee was equal No. 1 in WSC ODI, taking 54 wkts. In all ODI, Lillee took 157 wkts @ just 18.47. He still holds the fast bowling record for the most wkts in a Calendar Year, 85 wkts in just 13x Tests, achieved against England, West Indies, India & Pakistan. An incredible achievement. Lillee took 167 wkts in just 29x Ashes Tests. In 5 wkt hauls, his 11x places him No. 2 all-time, behind SF Barnes, who has 12x. In 10WM, Lillee's 4x 10WM, places him No. 1 all-time in Ashes Tests. In all World XI matches, DK took an incredible 58 wkts in just 9x World XI Matches. He retired with both the Test & ODI World Records, taking a wkt with his last ball. He's the greatest fast bowler I have seen in my 50 years of watching cricket. A lesser known fact, is DK's 467 wkts, places him No. 8 all-time. But no fast bowler in the top 10, averages 5+ wkts a Test. Considering the quality of those wkts, against West Indies & World XI's, he probably has the greatest record of any fast bowler to have ever played the game. Test & International standard, no minnows.

    @@graemealexander8804 my point isn't just confined to Lillee. He's great not just due to his stats, but to the sheer mastery he pocessed over the craft of pace bowling altogether and it was under his guidance that medium pacers like Glenn McGrath became bonafide match-winners without increasing a single digit of mph in their speed. This list I feel has no set of criterias and has been just stitched together on prefrence. Otherwise, how come Courtney Walsh, the bowler took over 300 wickets in the last decade of his career starting from becoming a new ball lead at the late age of 30, hasn't been included at all. It raises a hell lot of questions. If I were given authority, my list would be as follows:- 1. Malcolm Marshall(he edges over Lillee due to his consistency all over the world, Lillee due to his injury had a hard time in Asia) 2. Dennis Lillee 3. Glenn McGrath 4. Curtly Ambrose 5. Sir Richard Hadlee 6. Sir Sidney Barnes 7. Joel Garner 8. Wasim Akram 9. Alan Davidson 10. Imran Khan 11. Allan Donald 12. Waqar Younis 13. Michael Holding 14. Courtney Walsh 15. Andy Roberts 16. Dale Steyn 17. Shaun Pollock 18. Ray Lindwall 19. Wes Hall 20. Pitches were dreadful and no one was scoring runs, hence bowler's averages looked phenomenal in that era.
