Gary Sobers played a few seasons of Shield cricket in Australia and achieved something no one else did up to that point (not even the greats Miller). He scored over 1000 runs and took 50 wkts in a season twice. This is known as the all rounders double. He almost did it thrice but narrowly missed out. Also, Sir Gary could field anywhere, bowl any style and scored 100s from 1 to 7 in the batting lineup. Best all round player ever!!!

Perfect list though perhaps one could argue the case of having Imran Khan above Kallis and tbh Sobers and Kallis were both mainly batters who were very good playing supporting role as bowler but with Imran Khan from 1980 and ahead he played as top batter and bowler as his numbers in his last 50 tests also show

@@mtnstrand2819 even in that case Imran as a bowler was the main strike bowler of his team and had a career bowling average that is slightly better than even Wasim and Waqar. Infact, Imran was amongst the top bowlers of not just his time but all time and his bowling was far far superior to both Kallis and Sobers. Same can be said about Sobers and Kallis if we talk from batting point of view that they were and are amongst the best of all time and certainly ahead of Imran in that department. But the point that sets Imran apart from both Sobers and Kallis is that as an all rounder he was the best bowler of his team for long period and also amongst the top batter in his team for long who used to bat in the top 5 .

Hard to argue with that list although before my time I've always said Sobers is the best cricketer ever, Kallis due to longevity and as you said maintained his impact almost caught him. Dev, Imran and Botham all played at approximately the same time and you could rank them in any order and be correct. Only minor criticism no Ray Lindwall in the honourable mentions. From watching Botham probably gets the nod he was not as consistent as the other two but when he turned it on England won. But on their day any of the three could and did win games for there countries. Imran's batting improved dramatically at the back end of his career, so much that he would have been selected as a batsman only, so I am not disputing your call, but I think you might be discounting the match winning ability of the other two. If I had to place them in order it would be Imran, Botham, Kapil, but to be honest I would be happy with any one of them in my team

I think you undersell the man. 292 test wickets at an average of around 32.5 and a batting average of over 50 in test matches. So as an all rounder his strength was as a batsman whilst still being an effective bowler, not necessarily the best bowler but someone who’d tie an end up whilst as a captain you could rotate and rest your strike bowlers. That is an unfortunate reality for many all rounders that they either are used as break for the main bowlers or from a batting perspective try to hold the tail together and score as many useful runs as possible. Kallis made plenty of runs at an average most top line batsmen would be happy with yet still produced the goods as a bowler, plus was a very good fielder with 200 test catches.

As far as a complete all rounder is concerned, someone who opened the bowling attack as the main strike bowler and someone who would also play as a front line batsman in the top 5 Imran Khan is the only name. Add to that his phenomenal record against arguably the greatest Test team of all time the West Indies and his credentials as a captain as a leader of his young team. He never lost a series against them as a captain and not just that but was the top performer in the tightly fought and highly competitive away drawn series against them in 1988. Also was the top performer in the 1982 and 87-88 test series against the English and his series returns against Arch rivals India in the 1982-83 series are stuff that ppl can only dream of. Yes, Sobers is the greatest cricketer ever, however, Botham should be above Dev. Beefy practically won the 1981 Ashes single handily and was more effective than Dev as a bowler and batter

I've got very high standards. Average over 35 with bat, and under 25 with ball. Most here are bowler, that can bat a bit. Exception Sobers and Kallis, batsmen that can bowl a bit. I think Imran the only true all-rounder.
