stevesb97 It wasn't the torpedo that destroyed the Death Star. It was the fact that the exhaust led straight to the reactor core that brought it down. You could shoot a thousand of them and it would still be standing. The pilots made more than one run at the Death Star and missed. The damage was negligible. It was the specific target that did the fatal damage. Hawkeye's EXPLOSIVE arrows do damage, but not enough to take down a Helicarrier. That is unless you specifically target its weak spots, which was the point of my post.

My list... 1. Blue Thunder 2. Airwolf 3. SA-2 Sampson (The one you showed instead of the actual scorpion gunship) 5. The Dragon gunship from avatar. 6. A Thunder bird, really any of them would of been fine. 7. The Drop ship from Aliens. 8. The Bat 9. The Bubble Ship from Oblivion 10. Tho it was capable of space flight, the drop ship from Elysium.

Well the title says top 10 fictional aircraft blue thunder is basically an Apache now the Apache design that they used in blue thunder was way ahead of its time but the AH-64E has a silent mode and most of the weapons are similar to that of the ones in the film

Alex Williamson'sadventures Wrong. NONE of the AH-64s weapons are similar to the 20 mm gatling gun in the film. As much as I love Blue Thunder, its gun would have been like the equivalent of a bb-gun on real battlefield. The Apache does not have a six-barreled gatling gun, just a chain-driven 30 mm, single barrel gun. Which firing rate is so slow that enemy jetfighter can literally fly between the shots. Then again, it was not meant as an anti-aircraft gun. If Blue Thunder, based on the frame of a real French Gazelle helicopter, would have featured some of the weaponry of the Apache, it would never have made it as a "police helicopter." Its Vulcan gatling gun was its main and only weaponry. Blue Thunder's electronics were designed to eavesdrop on the state's citizens, the AH-64 was designed to destroy Soviet tanks during WW3. On the battlefield, Blue Thunder would have been good only for recon missions since its gun cannot penetrate armoured targets. As much as I love the AH-64 Apache, it could never distinguish between friend or foe by using its technical gadgetry alone. That's why during the Gulf Wars, several American and British armoured vehicles were blown to pieces because the Apache pilots erred on their own position and did not know the targets they were attacking, were friendly.

Well the Apache has a 30 mm gun but it also has the same missile a raise that were used in the film The only difference is that the design is a circular tail rotor with three blades where as an Apache is a cross blade tail rotor with four blades

Am I the only person who thought the helicarrier was the dumbest shit in the world. Hey guys I've got an idea, lets take something that weighs over 200million lbs (not an exaggeration based of the USS eisenhower), put it in the air where it's easier to detect with radar, and then give it some cloaking device that won't matter because of the massive heat signature and the fact that all anyone has to do is notice that is the center of where all those giant waves are coming from since it's engines have more force from the air alone than hurricane irene.

asymsolutions Assuming the Helicarrier is essentially a flying Nimitz class aircraft carrier, at least in terms of size and weight. That's about 100,000 tonnes supported by 4 36m rotor assemblies. The downwash velocity would be somewhere in the region of Mach 2+ to provide enough lift. No wonder it was about to get hard to breathe!

Orcaman15 Without details about the rotor assembly or blade design or RPM, its pretty impossible to do the math; but at a glance it looks to be a dual fan blade design with a pitch of about 80 degrees. But form looking at it you can presume that the blades, at least the outer halves would be moving at supersonic speeds in static air, but the intake air would also me moving at incredible speeds so between the 2 you would have massive normal shock about the leading edge (meaning a lot of heat and noise) as the air passed through the various rotors and stators, you would get shock reflection and interaction. What's more you would get added heat through the normal compression of the air passing through the ducts and depending on the geometry of the ducts etc, and assuming there is still supersonic air downstream of the initial shock waves more oblique shock waves. In the movie the fans make a whirling noise, but if you've ever heard a Tu-95 bear flying overhead (somewhere between a jet engine and continuous thunder), the Helicarrier would probably sound something like that! (And have 4 jets of air heated to around 500K coming out the bottom).

Nor Howl's Castle. (Which seems like a take of the Witch's house on chicken legs from the Russian tale "Baba Yaga".) Although Chitty Chitty Bang Bang could look really awesome as a car with a little more finishing/detail work. I like vintage Chris Craft boats and vintage cars (as well as polished aluminum) and here you have both. I think the chassis and front sheet metal of a Bugatti type 35 with no headlights and twin Brooklands style windscreens would look better though. (It certainly wouldn't bore you driving it!)

Do the BMX bikes from ET count? But my biggest peeve would have to be not accounting for the *Nebuchadnezzar from the Matrix* - I mean really?! This was not a bloody space ship either, in case anyone thinks this, technically it's a 'hover' craft.

Joking right? No "DROP SHIP" from Aliens? Thats one of the most classic airships in cinema history. And those Avatar ships, Cameron couldnt lose his "vietnam-theme" soldier style. He used it in Aliens already.. it felt over the top in Avatar with "Sergeant Serge" as the bad guy.

I agree with you, the drop ship had only very limited space flight capabilities. I mean it only flew in space enough to get it into low orbit and on the way down it didn't fly, it just fell with style, it only flew in atmosphere, so it should be on the list.

I love how Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang made the list. I used to love watching that movie as a kid. And Hushabye Mountain is probably one of my favorite songs to have ever come from a musical.

JBofBrisbane To me, the definition of an aircraft is something that uses aerial uplift to propel itself through the air. Wether it begin from hovering, go gliding or flying, it's basically the same. An air balloon uses volume vs mass to achieve flight, which is none of these things. And yes in that case I'd classify helicopters as aircrafts too.

We've had racecars at the Indy 500 that have gotten airborne. I would not consider them aircraft. Nor things like castles. A flying castle is a flying castle, not an aircraft.

I agree with your choice for number one. I was flabbergasted when I first saw that scene of the aircraft carrier taking off.

To be honest I think calling some of these aircraft is a bit of a stretch, specifically The Delorean and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I could be wrong but I feel it takes more than just the ability to fly to be an aircraft; flight has to be at least part of it's primary role, more than just an added feature.

um WatchMojo.com you might be confused about the AT-99 Scorpion the aircraft with door gunners is the SA-2 Samson while the smaller craft without door gunners is the AT-99 Scorpion they are 2 completely different aircraft with 2 different main uses, think of it this way the Samson is like a Blackhawk while the Scorpion is like an apache

You know what my favorite fictional aircraft is? The troop transporter/gunship from the last two Maze Runner movies.

My favorites are the airplane from GI Joe Rise of Cobra. The Hellicarrier from Avengers, The Stealth Jet from Avenges 2. The Milano from Guardians of the Galaxy, The Prometheus from Prometheus.

The DeLorean should be higher than Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

THIS is the AT-99 Scorpion ( www.pandorapedia.com/human_operations/vehicles/scorpion_gunship ) This is the SA-2 Samson that Trudy Chacon pilots ( www.pandorapedia.com/sa_2_samson ) Gotta say I like the Samson more than the Scorpion, for versatility. Scorpion is the modern version of the AH-1 'Cobra' attack helicopter, where the Samson is the modern version of its 20th century counterpart, the UH-1D 'Huey'. You could do a lot of stuff with the Huey ya just couldn't do with a Cobra... Ever wonder why the Marines are going ~back~ to the designs, with the UH-1Y Super Huey (aka Venom) & AH-1Z 'Zulu Cobra' (ka Viper) Expected to see the SHIELD Quinjets,(seen in movie & TV) not the Helicarrier... and the jet-bikes from 'The Island' were nice... the Oblivion 'bubble-ship' was sweet too...

To my knowledge, Starscream's jet mode is able to fly in space thereby making it a spaceship even if the design is that of an aircraft.

The Iron Vulture from TaleSpin and the Albatross from Master of the World - both are in the form of a giant airship with propellers on the top and at the end.

I'm sorry that they missed the very Rutan-like aircraft that Raymond Massey flies for "Wings Over The World" in the old film "Things To Come". Also, what about that cool German flying wing aircraft in "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" (even though we never got to see it fly), or the Martian flying battleships from the John Carter movie (just because they're flying on another planet doesn't mean they're "spaceships")?

I’d have to include the gunship from Tron and i don’t remember if it was out before this vid but the aircraft from Oblivion

I don't get why that house from Up wasn't on this list? Clearly it beats all.

Corbin Dallas's taxi from The Fifth Element. It's a car yes, but a flying one!

The V-280 Valor is very close to the attack copter from AVATAR. I like the FA-37 Talon 2 from stealth also.

You left out the Avengers Quinn Jet, the P-40 War Hawk from Sky Captain or the Government Ships from The Hunger Games, to name a few.

If you're talking to me, i meant the S.H.I.E.L.D. plane... As said, its not as iconic, but it looks awesome as f*** and the chitty chitty bang bang just made me cringe... When i clicked this video, i expected real fictional aircraft and not some fantasy car from some ageold TV-show for children... So yeah, even though we already got the Helicarrier, i'd rather have the Zephyr (or any other awesome fictional jet/fighter/whatever) on the list than this...

I'm surprised the 'Spinner' was an 'honourable mention' since the idea of the flying DeLorean most likely takes inspiration from Blade Runner. I would have included a Quinjet from _The Avengers_ for this list too!

I was surprised you didn't put in the hovercraft from the Matrix.

Saimeren If you're referring to ships such as the Nebuchadnezzar, they were neither aircraft nor (technically) hovercraft. They were incapable of long periods of "flight", as seen in Matrix 3, and they didn't hover in the same way a 'hovercraft' would (utilizing forced air to keep itself above ground). They instead used giant electro-magnets to repel themselves from the metal around them. They were neither flying nor hovering - rather, their magnets were playing "keep-away" with the walls.

***** It was still an adaptation of a hovercraft, and was even stated to be one by Morphius in the first Matrix movie. I know how they work, but that doesn't change the fact that they specifically call it a hovercraft.

***** They are aircraft, actually. The electromagnets are AG-Pads, which were used in aircraft for flight prior to the machine war.

I believe the Skyly J-2 from "Sky Crawlers" should've been in this list.

I liked the aircraft in Minority Report. I'm curious why the video talks of the Avatar aircraft as being possible in the future. It's inferior to the helicopters that we already have.

liam sargo This is called moving the goalposts. You put forth compact design as a standard in an attempt to refute my position. When I pointed out that it in fact supports my position, you discarded it as a standard to move on to the next reason to discredit it. The helicarier idea was borrowed from something called skybase from a 1960s TV cartoon show called Captain Scarlet. And yes, the Aliens drop ship and Firefox should be in the list.

How about the SHIELD Quinjet from avengers? that was a bad ass aircraft. Stealth features, hologram, weapons, and not to mention the awesome design.

Up to halo 2, they are strictly aircraft. In Halo 3 the newer models have the ability to go into orbit, but thats about it, still aircraft. And as chen fu said, Halo currently has no true real life movies beyond a few clips from previous attempts, Real life trailers/teasers, and the Foward unto dawn and upcoming series.

Pelicans have always been space worthy, so the answer would be no. It is the Primary drop ship used to get troops from the UNSC ships to the ground (Or possibly an enemy ship in a boarding action). It really is a cool ship though.

Only one thing....the MiG-31 is a real aircraft. Perhaps not the particular one in the movie but it is real name for a real aircraft.

+John Connor Not at the time... The -31 is a deveopment off the MiG-25, and wasn't in servicewhen the movie was made (or not known in the west)

Thomas Bögel The movie supposedly came out in 1982. The MiG-31 first flew in 1975 and was introduced to service in 1981. We might not have known about it but it still existed and was still a real aircraft. Also, the movie aircraft bears a decent resemblance to the real thing.

Funny also is how the AT-99 just actually look like a prototype for the new Black Hawk design for the next model for the Army/Navy.
