    Star Wars and Lord of the Rings are undoubtedly the greatest examples of fictional wars in cinema, but if it were me, I'd switch their placements. Why? Star Wars is essentially a family drama, an opera, at its core, with the backdrop of an ongoing war to move the plot and characters forward, whereas the entirety of Lord of the Rings is the buildup and realization of a massive conflict between good and evil. It's a looming and all-encompassing threat from the very beginning, which culminates in a truly fleshed-out war that covers the majority of the final two films, while Star Wars only features several battles, largely serving as a means to progress the central family conflict, in a war that has lasted years, much of which is off-screen. But, that's just my opinion. I love both.

    +Pepitobenito I couldn't agree more. I think LOTR is the ultimate story of good vs. evil. It has so many themes and different angles all wrapped up in one beautiful tale. And the battle scenes in LOTR are of such an incredible scale. It shows the true horrors and bravery that were displayed in medieval warfare.

    To be fair, they were referring to the wars in its entirety. Not the 'top 10 fictional war movies'. Most consider a cross-galaxy war between billions (if not trillions) of individuals to be slightly better than a war across a single continent. If you include how the war was represented in the other forms of media (books, graphic novels, even video games) then it only continues to grow. In terms of the actual movies, I'd definitely have to say Lord of the Rings wins out in terms of actual carnage, but in the wars represented (and most other terms being represented, but not quite shown in the movies), I'd have to give the medal to Starwars.

    Erikon14 Not disagreeing that the overarching conflict in Star Wars is on a much, much grander scale, especially when taking the EU into consideration, but this is a top 10 fictional wars in movies list, which I take to mean the representation of these conflicts directly on screen, not backstory.

    Pepitobenito I maintain this. They are not speaking of fictional battles. They are still speaking of wars on a complete scale. Even then, the aspects of the war represented in the movie is more than a little bigger than the other represented aspects in the lord of the rings. As I said, battle wise lord of the rings is better. But lord of the rings sorta seems more like a 12 year old came up with his dream fantasy war, and then sent it off to a great writer to expand on it. It's really nice in most all ways, but it really sorta lacks depth to me. Seems alot like what I would come up with those lego castle sets from a decade ago. At the same time, that same thing could be said about starwars, but it still has a certain sense of originality, in a few more ways.

    I feel like number one should go to LoTR, considering it's depiction of war was so heavily inspired by J.R.R Tolkien's first hand experience in World War 1, and is represented so well in the film adaptations.

    While I prefer lotr over sw, I must say Star Wars deserves its first place; Lotr is about much more than war, it tackles a multitude of life's aspects. But star wars is all about war (duh): Lucas drew his inspiration for the originals from WWII and the prequels actually give the feeling like the entire galaxy is involved, shifting major battles from planet to planet.

    Avengers vs Chitauri was basically just a single battle in a very short amount of time, while all the ones listed are basically wars that were going on over years and had nations/species fighting against each other. X-men vs brotherhood.... I would call it a war if it were more than 10 people fighting each other.

    The chita-whatevers didn't even do anything in the avengers; we never once see them kill anyone or even do anything but shoot at cars. I have no respect for a race whose asses can be kicked by the two WORST AVENGERS! What little plot the avengers had was full of holes and made only to serve the special effects and action scenes.

  • @abelbosma9774

    @abelbosma9774

    well this isn't top ten battles... it is top ten wars so X-men vs brotherhood is already out of the question because that wasn't a war it was just a battle and as was stated before the Avengers Vs the chitauri wasn't all that impressive. We knew nothing of the chitauri we only know loki and he wasn't even originally their leader nor was he intimidating. the entire battle was just an excuse to make the Avengers look awesome without focussing on that the villians should also be awesome/intimidating. teh avengers ofcourse were aweosme but it was no high quality war I would call this one a battle as well not a war. however bad transformers is as an interesting story at least we know something about the villians.... and i know some people even have something against the action in the tf franchise so that is also up for debate but the decepticons and the autobots didn't fight just one battle they were in a war adn both sides could've won if it wasn't for hollywood heroes always win logic.

    Im sorry but the war of the ring>>>star wars. I love both but you dont get the same overwhelming feeling of scale or intimate gruesome heartfelt one on ones in star wars. All the stormtroopers miss and die in a cheesy manner with no blood or gore; causes sense of a lack of desperation and intensity. Whereas in lotr there are amazing fight scenes and spectacular deaths with character losses that make you feel the pain of the war; the worst that happens in star wars is luke loses his hand. The scale isnt as impressive as lotr either; i bet when you saw the camera pan out over 6000 riders as theoden concluded his speech it left you breathless. give it up WatchMojo!

    umidontno040394 ye but we are talking about War's not battles and hope, empire and return don't have a war. the rebels don't have the manpower or equipment for a war the best they can manage to do is small skirmishes the attack on endor (ground) has like 40 people (ewoks don't count as their local wildlife) and the space battle is most of the rebel fleet vs some of the Empires and the empire's ships don't attack there just there to stop the rebels escaping (because a ring of ships can stop you from moving in a 3D space somehow?). now as much as attack of the clones and revenge of the Sith are badly written and directed they do have a war in them it spans the two films.

    The X-Men franchise has been for the most part pretty weak especially the third movie, recently they've improved a lot though. This last movie was really good and I also liked First Class. I do think you're right that X-Men was better than a lot of this list, but that's really not saying much as the list was total shit.

    I personally prefer The Lord of the Rings even though I grew up with both Star Wars trilogys. As great as both the more political and eventually full scale Clone Wars were (even though nobody likes them) and the darker and more character driven rebelion war against the empire were, the scale of The Lord of the Rings wars are just immense. The sheer amounts of orcs, the amazing battles themselves, the different races fighting against and with each other and the consequences of the actions of the peoples of middle earth, just makes the whole story epic. I love both but if I had to choose one, I'd pick Lord of the Rings. (Please don't hate me Star Wars fans). Also (although its not as grandios, gritty or heavy as LOTR) I have so far really liked the Hobbit films that are fun lighter hearted films. From what I've heard though, the final film is going to be the best as the battle of five armies is apparently (from quotes from the creators) more ambitious and amazing as any of the other battles in the LOTR films which gets me very excited. Also, the parts with Thorin, the meeting of the races, Dol Gul Dor and Smaug I am very much looking forward to! :) Also also, I can't wait for Star Wars Episode VII. GOD I AM SUCH A NERD! xD

    Shit will get crazy there at the Lonely Mountain, still the fact that Legolas was in The Desolation of Smaug still bothers me, same as creating Tauriel. Still both were awesome but I still wanted something not that far from the book. Plus, really Kili getting shot with a Morgul arrow? Come on its nearly the same as Frodo getting stabed by the Witch King. Hoping he has a book like death, awesome as hell I hope...

  • @ZantofDarkness

    @ZantofDarkness

    $poilerDude I can understand some fans not liking the changes from the book, but apparently the extended cut of DoS is much longer and has more parts from the book in it (dunno why they weren't in there in the first place). And about Kili, I think that may affect him in BotFA and he dies in the battle due to the arrow. I also think that Tauriel will die too to make it more emotional. I actually didn't mind the elf, dwarf love story, I thought it was a nice refresher during the Smaug parts to go back to them and it never felt cheesy to me. Also I hope this is the best one of the three. Both of the first I really enjoyed and actually after low expectations going into AUJ and being surprised by it immensely, I went into DoS with high expectations and didn't think it was as good in many areas. But after watching it again, it seemed better. Both the first 2 had flaws but I have a feeling that some of those flaws will be cleared up in the third film! Can't wait! :D

    Your #2 doesn't count because it's not a fictional war and your #3 doesn't count either because that was just a one-time battle and only one side was an army.

    Agreeing with lots of comments. LotR should be #1. Just so many epic battles and ground breaking in how they were pulled off from a movie making stand point. Helm's Deep, Pelennor Fields, Isengard, The Black Gate... they all give me chills. They were shot to give you the full scope of the battle. I'll say that Star Wars is a solid second slot though. :)

    Also FYI Storm Troopers are the best shots in the galaxy! Look it up their is a big thing about it. Everytime Stormtroopers suck and can't hit anything is all part off the plan. The Deathstar "They let us go" "The tracker is in place" the Cloud city they were under orders not to harm Luke but on Hoth and when they took Lea's ship at the start of IV no problems. Quick and efficient NEARLY everytime they lose it was according to plan.

    What about during the battle of Endor, when they only seem to kill one Ewok? Funny thing is that there's an idea in the Expanded Universe which states the cloning process used by the empire during that stage was possibly be causing them to be inaccurate.

    lol, I had one of those, "hello boys, I'm ba-aack!" moments today. i was plying War Thunder, flying out my Spitfire F Mk.IX, and I was being teamed up upon by multiple aircraft, two He 162As, and a BF-109K-4, and I got one of the He 162s! Only thing was, I said, "look alive, sunshine!"

    Bullshit. Maurauder was hilarious, a perfect punchline started by the satire in the original. The second one was crap, but it was a made-for-Syfy TV movie, so what did anyone expect?
