    If you actually watch the 1993 version of this song Maynard does a very emotional performance

    Tool single handedly changed my outlook on life. Lost my mother to addiction, and I imagine that this was the internal struggle she faced day in and day out as she battled her demons. This song introduced me to Tool, and Tool introduced me to a new way of thinking. It even guided me towards my new faith, and I wonder just where I'd be if it wasn't for this band. Ride the Spiral, keep going! 🤘

    If you think THIS is a plea for help just watch the live version from '93. Maynard is living the lyrics there. And you're one of the few who get the 'lift you up to bring you down' part as being from the drugs perspective. Although Maynard is know to use a lot of double entendre's so it can also be from the addict towards others around him perspective. Maynard is always intentionally vague about the meaning. Thinks people should get their own meaning for them from the lyrics. So whatever you get from the lyrics is what is intended for you.

    You haven't even gotten to the second chorus and you broke down the song better than anyone I've ever heard react to this video and break this song down. Describing the alcohol as the butler serving you something I've never heard anyone else think of its really brought the song to a new light for me. Thanks I love the video. I love that he thinks he can call upon the butler with his addiction it makes perfect sense.

    I tripped on your channel looking for TOOL reaction channels and, I must say, it is one of the better out there in its dissection of the lyrical meaning of the songs. Your perspective, thus far, is quite intriguing on how accurate it is for first listens....IF you haven't cheated and looked it up before hand for "content". I'm going to trust this is off the cuff and truly your ability to break things down on the fly, which is impressive. So, if this is going to be a TOOL journey, I'm all-in and here for every single reaction (subbed as of this Vid). TOOL is, by far, one of the most unique bands I have ever had the pleasure of listening to in my lifetime. Started on them with this very song (SOBER) back when it first came out on the Undertow album and have been an appreciative fan ever since. It really says a lot of a band whose songs from over 30 years ago can still impress people current day... and I see it a LOT. May your journey be as mind blowing as ours was when we heard them the first times as well. Buckle up, its a hell of a ride!

    This is only the tip of the iceberg. If you follow the album progression, it gives a really campbell-esque heros journey through the themes of each album.

    That ”level of gluttony for a substance” usually comes as a result of parental abuse/mental disorders/depression in some combination. Usually people who doesn’t already suffer don’t end up trying hard drugs or start abusing alcohol and such. If you are in a dark place without a supportive family or friends I totally see how a drug could take a hold over a persons life.

    “Jesus won’t you ‘fucking’ whistle?” He’s not asking nicely. I’d reco to avoid music videos altogether. They’re intended to mess with you, distracting or not 1:1 connected, even if in a cool way, and often censored like this one. Great reaction all the same. Fire. One of the best. Many more demons, hypocrisy, truths, and spiritual awareness to unpack. Keep going! Forty six & 2!

    ‘I don’t allow myself to go through it’. That’s the logic of someone who’s never been pushed to the brink by life, abuse, or mental illness. I don’t think it’s a matter of ‘allowing’ it. It’s whether you’ve suffered enough to give in.

    Fil, perhaps this will help with the understanding. Addiction doesn't come from a battle against the substance. It's man vs himself. The battle is with all of the demons within that become insidious ways of self torment. Then eventually you add the physical addiction, usually as a way to cope, but, as Maynard expresses, it only works to elevate you - to a new high, a new lie, in search of a new life. But it always results in a new low. It's a perpetual losing battle of wills with yourself, full of self loathing, self defeating, self fulfilling prophesies. If you don't have some form of positivity in your life you can't learn to cope with life's ups and downs and the battles begin, inherently starting at a deficit. Great song and great breakdown. There are many awesome covers of this song as well. Check out Staind's version, my 2nd fave after this original. ❤

    🌬🌀✡🌀💨 #TOOLARMY Keep doing Tool tracks, or any of Maynards' 3 bands (TOOL, A Perfect Circle & Puscifer) and we WILL show up. Again- for a legitimate understanding of MJK's lyrics, ponder them through the lens of Carl Jung and the Corpus Hermeticum. Art is clearly subjective, but that's just the perspective that Maynard (vocalist/lyricist) writes his 'poetry' from. He always refers to himself as nothing more than a poet. Humility is one of his MANY strengths. Emphasis on MANY. These guys are the GOAT's. 😜🤘 🤔🧠_🐐🐐🐐🐐

    I was awestruck when I first heard this song! I didn’t realize bass guitar was a thing before this song. I was 11 when this song dropped on MTV and for reference my favorite band was Metallica, and let’s be honest you couldn’t hear the Bass in Metallicas music. It certainly wasn’t as prevalent as TOOL’s bass

  • @joescott4778

    @joescott4778

    Well, yo be fair, the bass was just there for Hammett to keep a steady beat, because Lars would usually embellish everything he played. With Tool, each member is as good as the other 3 and they all have input on the songwriting process. This is art
