the shadow reference is about Carl Jung's psychology descriptions of the Shadow. Our subconscious contains the shadow that influences our conscious mind. Only through integration of the Shadow can we reach balance in our lives. Keep going down the Tool rabbit hole, try "Intention" & "Right in Two". Intention is an intro into Right in Two.

There is our level, comprising 44+2 chromosomes. We are a disharmonic level of consciousness that is used as a steppingstone from the 42+2 level to the next level, 46+2... These two additional chromosomes change everything.

Interesting analysis, you mentioned theories I had not considered in 20 plus years of listening to this song which is always nice to come across. For me the song is not about escaping the shadow but rather accepting the shadow-nature inherent in each of us and integrating that into one's own psyche. It can be painful to accept these darker parts of one's personality, but Maynard might be saying that one must soften their old armor, step into the shadow, and come out the other side in order to realize their potential. There is this higher level of existence he is striving for, and he willingly chooses to move forward knowing that there will be elements of his shadow-nature that will become manifest. The alternative at the other extreme is not striving for that higher existence at all costs for fear of manifesting one's shadow, thereby denying the total nature of the human experience and the validity of one's own existence. However, on either path the shadow is always there to be contended with and becomes manifest whether we will it to be or not. It would appear that at some basic level one must choose the pain of growth or the pain of denying one's own potential. The shadow is neither negative nor positive - it just is - and the sooner one integrates this into their psyche, the sooner one can stop resenting one's own inherent nature and get on with living their life and appreciating all of it, not just the parts that would be considered positive at some superficial level.

The vocals are low by design , they want to pull you into the song and force you pay attention. The Shadow is a Jungian reference. 46&2 is referencing our Chromosomes and how it is theorized that we will develop 2 more through our evolution

I just have to say the quality of the song's audio in this video is really impressively good. With Tool it's so important to have the lower-mids, and bass, while retaining like 2k-3k for clarity. A lot of channels butcher music on reaction videos, so I appreciate that this has managed to thread the needle between having the power, but not distorting or compressing.

You have to keep down the Tool spiral. You will just find more and more that engages the intellect and philosophical. I love watching you dissect what you are hearing. You will have no regrets checking out their entire catalog. If I can, I’d recommend growing with them in album chronology. Their latest album was a 1pm year wait for us fans and mind-blowingly good. But patience will be rewarded.

Fil, a lot of tracks have low vocals by design. Love this chaotic, tub thumping track. According to google, 'The premise is humans would deviate from the current state of human DNA which contains 44 autosomes and two sex chromosomes. The next step of evolution would likely result in human DNA being reorganized into 46 autosomes and two sex chromosomes' - who knew - George Bernard Shaw perhaps (Man & Superman)? #QcumberSquad #Tool - Fil, I'm off back to the study.

I think it's referring to chromosomes 23 for human or 46 because they are in pairs. Like evolving, as you said. If 1 chromosome is added, that's plus 2. Then again, I most likely have no clue what I'm talking about.

MJK is referring to 'Shadow Work', per Carl Jung. Maynard is a Hermetic gnostic. Jung was an occultist. Once you wrap your head around this- it's much easier to understand where Maynard is coming from lyrically. Eastern mysticism & Egyptian Paganism are consistently the thematic underpinnings of most of his lyrics. Dialectical language is often used, iykyk. Double speak- double meanings of esoteric significance. 🍏👁🍎 ⚜🐉🔆 ♠️🎭🦉

This was a great reaction, sir! Love it when people come up with their own interpretations, rather than going with popular or even the artist’s POV. very broadly speaking early Tool is dark. Middle Tool is introspective. Later Tool is spiritual? Looking forward to the next. Always tell newbies to start from Undertow go all the way through Fear Innocculum. then go back to the Opiate EP to see where they started from. Subscribed!

Your second thought, old Maynard young Maynard, really touches on “Jimmy”. Another song I recommend from the same album. At least that’s how I interpret “Jimmy”. But hey, “over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind. Withering my intuition leaving opportunity behind”. Maynard

You have to dig deep inside yourself and embrace the side of yourself that you or others might not like. If you want to grow as a person, you have to understand that side of yourself and embrace it to a degree. 46&2 has to do with consciousness and human evolution but you might need to look that up yourself
