This is why the lyrics are such an incredibly awesome quality. There might be something that inspires him to write a song but he writes it in a fashion that makes all of us think about ourselves and our world and interpret this song is a little differently than each other. This is what great music is about, he’s never talking literally and takes my mind to places it doesn’t otherwise go.

When you said the music is getting better and better I think you touched on a couple things. First, the more you listen to TOOL the more you appreciate it. Second, I think TOOL is one of those rare bands where their music gets better with each album as they evolve. A lot of bands best music is their earlier albums, and then often, at the pressure of record labels, pump out less inspired music just to meet record contract requirements. TOOL has always kept artistic control over their music and not given in to record label demands. Their last album took 13 years and is arguably their best. But most of all they have never put out music just to make money. Every song and every album has been painstakingly crafted. They never cut corners or compromise for anything less then excellence.

Contrary to some of the comments here this song isn't about anyone in the band's struggles with alcohol or addiction but rather a song written about someone the band members knew who could only perform at his artistic best when he was high. The line "Jesus won't you fucking whistle" is basically another way of saying "Christ would you say something else; something new?" as the person they wrote the song about constantly droned on about the same stuff. Adam Jones said in an interview with Guitar School: "The song and video are based on a guy we know who is at his artistic best when he's loaded. A lot of people give him shit for that. I don't tell people to do or not do drugs. You can do what you want, but you have to take responsibility for what happens. If you become addicted and a junkie, well, that's your fault." Can't wait to see the rest of Undertow album, especially Disgustipated!

@@stormywaters1565 my pleasure, Maynard changed some of the lyrics, so it's still quite possible the other members knew who the inspiration for the song was... they like to mess with their fans and the media and leave things open to interpretation and keep them guessing/thinking.

Some Tool fans y’all are. In the 1993 Reading festival, Maynard takes the “Jesus whistle” chorus out of the performance and replaces it with another “Mother Mary” chorus. Have you guys even seen the the live video? If you have, and you know your Tool lyrics by heart, you should’ve realized this immediately.

You are exactly right about the song being about addiction. Maynard struggled with alcohol addiction for many years as a result of his traumatic childhood. You will find that every album is a journey through his relationship with himself and the process of his healing. Tool's discography really does begin with Maynard's blunt honesty about his experiences, and they travel through his realization that regardless of what we experience, we are all ultimately responsible for how we choose to feel.

It's not about him. I've never seen a lick of evidence Maynard has ever had a substance issue, actually a very driven and self-controlled, if at times angry and wounded, individual, and it's pretty well known this song is about an acquaintance of the band and what a pain in the ass they were to deal with.

Powerful song about struggling with addiction and the hold it has on you. More specifically about the band's original bassist at the time, he wasn't able to be creative without being high/loaded. The song was inspired by his struggles specifically but works on a larger scale and different types of personal issues.

It isn't about Paul D'Amour, or at the very least I can find no evidence to support this. Paul's split from Tool was amicable from what I can gather; he was just not as into spending 8 hours working on one riff to get it perfect. He claimed their creative process was just "too much" for him and decided to part ways.

I know that I'm late but I thought that what I have to share is very interesting due to your theories on religion in regards to this song. One of Maynard's source of inspiration was psychoanalyst Carl Jung, student of Sigmund Freud. Carl Jung shared this theory that indulging in spirituality too much could lead to schizophrenia or some mental illness. What he thought was that people who are schizophrenic cannot separate their subconscious from reality. Almost like it is seeping through. Maynard also uses references to certain "occult" ideas such as alchemy, sacred geometry and hints towards a hermetic like belief. Hermeticism belief holds that spirituality and reality should be balanced. You should have an equal amount of spirituality and realistic thinking. Given all of that, you could say that indulging too much into religion could leave you with a less than sober perspective. I believe that your interpretation fits very nicely.

From what I've heard and understood about TOOL's live performances is that Maynard is most often found way in the back of the stage, usually offside and in an unlit area. I have heard this is because he suffers from REALLY bad stage fright and this is one of the rare videos of him in front and center stage. As I understand he moves like that because he is extremely uncomfortable and he has said that to deal with it he picks out a member of the crowd and literally stares them down!

The "I'll only complicate you" part, I think, is the power of the shadow indicated at the beginning of the lyrics, which for me is the sum of the shadow of alcohol along with their own "bottled" conscience. I would like to make a "streaming" on the discography of Tool if you guys are ok with that. For me it is the life diary of a person who undertakes a journey starting in the order of ignorance and the dogma imposed on society (opium = dogmatic religion) until its consequences darker. It is the self-observation of this individual and what underlies his life, what the Undertow album inspires me ... like unknown nauseating waters and totally influential in his own life (Undertow = see where all this undertow shadows goes). Now the first triad of records concludes with Ænima, which is the operating room to cure this tangled shit. Ænima is a compound word Anima = Soul and Enima = it is the procedure of introducing liquids into the rectum and colon through the anus, to clean the digestive system, the intestine, etc. This is how to restart the immune system. Once cleansed, purged, drained and purified, this human being has the ability to look at the limitless possibilities of his human and divine aspect, that's where (according to my point of view, of course) the spiritual urgency comes in addition, into LateRaLus = For me it is a word that has many meanings. The word lateral comes from the Latin lateralis, formed by latus, lateris (side, flank) and -alis (-al = relation or belonging), and lus for me is a descendant of the word LUX which means Light in Latin. It is the awakening of someone who has already witnessed his/her shadow and understood and purged it, to open its deepest eyes observing reality and understanding the limitless. The outer Universe without barriers and at the same time the intimate and direct relationship that exists between that reality and that inner Universe where everything Is, and escapes the illusion of being born, growing, maturing and dying. As one of his PARABOL / A songs says "We are eternal, all this pain is an illusion". Each song contains an esoteric and at the same time human path of someone who undertakes a journey upon awakening. The beauty of this work is that it also focuses on the return of the same shadow "expelled and purged" in previous albums, treated in some corridors of this one. In addition to the explanations of the supposed meaning of Lateralus, for me it also has relation with RA, the Egyptian Sun God, since just on the cover of the album Lateralus appears in Syllables as LA TE (RA) LUS, being the monosyllable RA the one that is right aligned with the heart of the image of an enlightened human being. Ra is the all-seeing eye, and on the cover this monosyllable appears below the heart, whose flame contains a spiraling Flaming Eye rising beyond the body edge. I will stop because I think it is a lot of information in a single comment hahaha sorry! It is also something that is based on my feelings and inspiration, that is the beauty of all this, we are all unique and particular beings. A fraternal hug and thank you for rescuing and honoring this music from the art of analysis and spontaneous reaction. I faithfully follow this channel

It's always interesting to see how the lyrics Maynard had in his notes, which appears to be your source off of toolshed.down.net, are typically a bit different from what he decided to sing on the tracks. The key is that, vs some 3rd party transcriptions, it at least doesn't mess up the meaning of the song, and usually doesn't cause confusion on some commonly misheard words.

Actually, this isn’t from the 1993 Reading festival live. This is the studio version of the song. Maynard takes the “Jesus won’t you F’ing whistle” out of that performance. Replacing it with the “Mother Mary” line.

You reference a lot of Pyschology (Piajet and Erikson) and rightfully so. I was curious if this is your area of study/profession or if it is just an interest that happens to be very relevant to Tool's lyrical content.

@@initum1599 really? Spotify have alternate censored versions by default? That's terrible for first time listeners not hearing the way it's intended. Even the chorus has a "double vocal" effect, unfortunately.

@@initum1599 Sorry if it sounded as a complaint, it wasnt my intention. It surprised me because I havent heard that "clean edit" version before. The bands of that era used those edited songs to be featured in the radio. Just checked the official videoclip on KZread and it is that version too.
