it's just the way Maynard performs. he invests himself into the music, it's not just this song. I don't think it's a conscientious "portrayal" or acting, it's just an external embodiment of how the music feels.

For those who do not recognize Maynards movements on the stage, it is an over performance of a person going through withdrawal, the jerky movements, the shaking, the scratching, not being able to stand straight. Considering the subject of the song Maynard did a hell of a performance, part of it from a users point of view while the other part is from the substances point of view.

No he used to do this all the time early on. Its a way of dealing with stage fright by creating a character to deal with it. He's never been an addict. Now he performs in the dark beside the drummer

I didn't say he was addicted or on anything, I said he put on a performance of withdrawal. In other words he acted it out on stage.

Haba-hey, counterfooters. Maynard is very 'method' in his performance here. Adds to the drama of the lyrics. Cracking performance.

He was a Wrestler in his youth , they do all kinds of weird breathing exercises , so full lung capacity would probably not be a problem even if he was standing on his head .

Uh, guys, This is a music "act".. he owns a winery, writes poetry and simply is acting the part of the song... like others have posted.. check out "Tempest, Pneuma" etc. Tool is a historic group of musicians just this side of Led Zeppelin.

Hard to Believe Maynard was in the US army and well on his way to being an officer at West Point.

I figured by that point you had plenty of comments explaining the inspiration behind the song. As for the quote I put up and responded to, it’s not insult I took from it. Notice how there are no stage props. No spectical. Just the band and their instruments. This is because they don't want to take attention away from the music or the performance that Maynard is putting on. The song is about addiction from the addicts point of view. Being an addict is like being a crushed and tormented creature, and that's the exact character he's portraying here. He's pretending to be the physical embodiment of what an addict is like on the inside. Tortured, and in pain.

Hey guys, great reaction, although I am a little late but I have subscribes anyway ;) If you feel like making more music reaction videos, might I suggest some J-rock, it is really popular for reacters at the moment, and for good reason. If anyone hasn't suggested already, I recommend Band Maid. Check them out, and not only once as they have quite a collection of awesome music posted and a really interesting back-story. Oh, shit another thing. Never ever do a tool music video. It's almost always fan made and has absolutely nothing to do with the meaning of the song. Best to always do a lyric video if possible. Tool songs usually have deep meanings to them you wont catch in a MV.

NO, it was Bianca's first time evben hearing the song, so for her to know the origins of the performance would have ruined the reaction and the point of the video.

This video should be titled, "Missing the point of great art to make lame poo jokes." Or "We're oblivious, duh ...fork sandwich, drool river."

Cheer up champ. It was the first time she had even heard the song let alone seeing a live version of it. Think back to the first time you ever saw Tool live.

You can't get beyond that? Really? Don't let the superficial get in the way of you actually appreciating a performance. A huge portion of the awesomeness of life may be overwhelmed by your prejudicial perspective. You might want to delve a little deeper before declaring Maynard needs to see a proctologist.
