VOCAL COACH REACTS - TOOL - Sober

Trinkies!
This is my first time reaction to The Tool and their performance of Sober. The whole song was very emotional and dark, I really loved the expression. This performance is as old as me can you believe? Enjoy!

He really does whatever he feels like doing on a song/tour. I know that sounds overly simplistic, but it's true. I saw them on the 10,000 days tour and you never actually saw him clearly. He was in the back to the left of the drummer for the entire performance. The whole back of the stage was giant screens, so you literally only saw his silhouette the entire performance. But I've also seen him perform in women's lingerie... so yeah. haha

it also cool he has an understanding fans. I havent seen one person in the comments being an asshole about it, so thta is really cool that you guys allow him to really focus on his art and perform however he feels that day. not every artist get that kind of good treatment. :)

I saw him in Nashville on Tools tour with Primus. He stood in the back shadows the whole time in full riot gear. I only know that because he posted a picture prior to them coming out on Instagram. I didn't see him the entire show. But we didn't need to, it was such an incredible experience seeing those two bands.

Saw them last year on this date actually in Connecticut. He had two platforms behind the band that he'd use and hide in the shadows or he would just sit down while he was singing.

Hello lovely lady! MJK is in the character of the addict while performing this song, it's not that's he's on something. The song was about someone he knew who struggled with addiction issues, and MJK really wasn't one to indulge. This is early in Tool's career, and in the years since then thru now when they tour, he's usually in the back of the stage, mostly in darkness. Part of this is that the lights throw off "the zone" and the emotional feeling in which he performs each song, but also because he feels that his voice is just one part of the band and no more important than the drums, guitar, or bass, so why should he be out front. Fun fact, I met him when he was in art college. My GF at the time was roommates with a woman who was in some classes with him and brought him over to their apartment a few times. There is a recording of him with his old band (C.A.D.) performing a song that includes some of the lyrics from Sober that was recorded at the local public tv station. It's sometimes found here on YT, but has been pulled down before. My ex-gf was one of the people working at the station that day.

early tool is assuredly distressing, disturbing and dark, and the music and mood unsettling. maynard's demeanour, the frailty of his voice and vulnerability of his persona is what sets them apart for me. it's often painful to go through it with him, especially once you know the lyric and can understand the themes. pure art.

Katriinka, you are truly an outstanding analyst of vocal performance. You could have easily cashed in on this one, but you really picked up on the subtleties of the performance and sought to understand Maynard's intent. Tool is my favorite all-time band, but I've been so enamored with Nightwish for the past year. I've seen you react to both many times, and I can truly say you are a legit reactor who seeks to do justice to the extreme effort these performers give to us. Thank you!

Unlike other drumcam videos I’ve seen the sound mix is still regular (some drum cam video are just raw pickup and can’t hear the rest of the band as good). Not suitable for vocal coach reaction but still worth watching for yourself. This drummer is incredible.

I think, in the genre of rock/alternative, a voice that may be incredibly different and unique and engaging would be the singing of Layne Stayley of Alice in chains. It's definitely a raw rock voice, but with some great blues and interesting range and mood. Love Hate Love live is a great one to start with, but there are many others that will amaze, like Nutshell, and Down In A Hole, Rooster and others - so many awesome songs and styles.I hope you

I tend to troll KZread for these kinds of reaction videos when i am on nightshift and i have to say i am finding yours actually give me a bit of a different perspective on songs i have known and loved for a long time, so thank you for that. This is a great showing of early Tool, but if you want a true treat i highly recommend reacting to the live version of the song Pushit from their Salival album. Not only is it's recording quality better but it is a much better representation of what the band has become as it has aged along with you.

That's true with the stage fright. I think he was tryna do some weird stuff to see what he could do with it and see if the crowd still loved it. So he could get comfortable

If you want to see the transformation in Tool check out Pnuema from their last album. Also Danny Carrey shows why he is considered one of, if not the, best drummers of all time. Heck, it shows how great the entire band is.

i really really really want to hear this lady sing this song for some reason- this would be such a good song to hear covered by a trditional singer - she couldnt do what maynard does but it would be interesting to me to hear her do what he is doing in that song

even Tools new stuff is powerfully voiced. MJK is one to put 100% into his part of the performance. I actually envy his abilities, hes also owner of a vinyard and works it manually as well as with equipment. I have 5 bottles of wine from his vinyard. hes a mixed martial artist, and go check out his other performances with other bands!

The song was based on a friend of the group where the dude wasn't creative or fun without being under the influence hence the name sober

If you're into drummers, they have a living legend in Danny Carey. The singer, Maynard, has amazing range and power even after all these years. It is nearly effortless for him. Their live concerts are so on point, it sounds like it came from the studio. He did sing with Tori Amos once for a benefit concert, small parts of the song, but it shows how beautiful his voice can be when he wants. "Muhammad My Friend" is the song if you want to check it out.
