    Tool is calming to me in a weird way. I got my mother to appreciate Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" in that way years ago, after she asked me to explain why I closed my eyes while listening to music. I gave her a "rock & roll lesson" about riding along with the pulsing intensity of a song, with a melody floating over the top (like in "Sober"). She seemed to get it when I compared it to Duke Ellington (which I called "big band heavy metal"). Both Tool and Led Zeppelin get me nostalgic about that rare bonding moment with my mom.

    It's character. To actually be able to sing with the power he does in this song is amazing considering his posture during this performance. He must be grounding completely thru his legs or something because there's no way he's getting the breath that a normal vocalist would need to sing this.

  • @mokospoko
    @mokospoko2 жыл бұрын

    Vocal Teachers that have reacted to this same performance have said that the crouching posture actually would make singing more difficult and admired his performance and commitment to capturing the essence of what it is to fight for one's sobriety. So he is in Character. The lesson I get from this is that playing & singing music isn't enough, the greatest artists are fully committed to the emotion and feeling of what they are presenting.

    My feeling about Maynard is that even though you would think he would be far from it. He was very socially nervous and had to dig deep in a sort of different euphoria to escape that feeling and it worked. When many eyes watch there are those who also feel safer in another character. So many would be shocked to know who was shy and not shy in the entertainment business.

    I was just thinking about H live recently. The one time that really sticks with me is from the tour with the giant video screens (2000 or 2001 maybe?). The lead-in to H was this seemingly endless loop of the same image over that record needle in the groove sound. It so gradually transitioned into H that by the time it got to "I DON'T MIND" the whole arena was fully spellbound and howling right along with Maynard. Like I know everyone jumps in on that lyric but it was otherworldly that time. Sometimes the code just gets cracked and the whole place is hypnotized. Tool is very good at that.

    As a artist looking at this show always give me goosebumps and make me so emotional, he is so far back into the moment he felt that way and then he wrote these words. As a artist we can go back to them moments in life to are dark and let them resurge again to use on stage. Its powerful and beautiful.

    My first time hearing them it was this song I was 11 and I am now 40. When to school the next day sing this song everyone thought I was nuts but lil did they know I was listening to the greatest band to ever come out of The end of the century.

    I think that Tool is the band Wild Stallions from the Bill & Ted movies. The Wild Stallions saves humanity by bringing everyone together; Tool does the same. Just watch people start moving their bodies to the rhythm - happens every time; watch people start paying attention to the message in the lyrics. Watch any one of these Tool reaction videos; they are all the same. They all show that we can cross these social boundaries, and in the end everyone comes together...kind of like what the Wild Stallions does.

    When you hunch over like that, it condenses and therefore strengthens your core....your abdomen muscles....where your vocals originate. It's a method used to belt out those resonating sounds, that only the elite vocalists can produce with such feeling and accuracy.

    Not sure if anyone has answered the Maynard hunched over question but I've heard he suffers from severe stage fright. He now stands at the back of the stage mostly in outline at the concerts. Adam and Justin are towards the front framing center stage with Danny and Maynard in the back. He comes up front from time to time but mostly in the back. The one song I remember him being front and center for was "Rosetta Stoned" during the beginning of the song when he is talking through a megaphone into the mic. Thank you for keeping your reactions real and being positive influence in this world Jamal as well and the big little brothers!

    If you want to see something shocking check out Tool live in Lewiston Maine. I was maybe 20yrs old and my bf was a roadie for them. I met Maynard before the show and was terrified to say the least. You’ll understand if you see how he is dressed. Never heard a single song before that day. But love their music to this day.

    I listen to pretty much any genre of music, grunge, rap, metal, country, oldies (1950 and 1960's), stuff I wouldn't even know how to categorize... And even with all that. Maynard shines. He's special.

    Just checked your Tool playlist because I forgot which ones you’ve done. You gotta do “Prison Sex”. Quite disturbing but it was the follow up to Sober and the video was banned from MTV after a few airings.
