Yall can't just Bob your head, yellow Hoodie got the best rhythm, bc Danny is playing in multiple timing, I think it's a 4/4 with a 33/8 and idek I'm no pro drummer, but he's changing tempos in this song, and playing multiple tempos at the same time, no he's not a sellout, this is a live performance with the band tool, this video showcases the complexity of Dan's drum prowess by only showing the drum cams, he is playing with the full band, and yes he is 6'4"+ tall and around 300 lbs, he is a giant irish/American, if the Celtics jersey threw you off, you guys hear awesome but don't understand how phenomenal this is, he is playing in 2 separate times simultaneously, the man's a giant, he breaks all the classical rules of timing in music, and still arranges masterpieces like this, that's the reason the band isn't included in the video, it's to highlight Carreys drums, go ask the best musicians you know and they could better explain why this is special, and why only the drum cam is shown as opposed to the rest of the band...it's great to see the black community embrace white culture and music for what it is. Sound, the same way white et al, appreciate good hip hop or jazz/blues, bc good music is good music, I challenge you to listen to a classical composer, or even modern rock bands like dream theater, or ffdp songs far from home, or bad company, it may blow your mind. For modern "rock" and it's Neil pert like hurt with a p, watch some of his songs with rush, a Canadian band who has a top 10 drummer of all time, or perhaps ZZ TOP, who Jimmy Hendricks said Billy gibbons, their guitarist was in Hendricks opinion the best of all time..

There may be/have been drummers out there as good or better than Danny, but no one have proved themselves to be. The degree of dificult coupled with raw power and a percussionist approach that on many songs basically is a drumsolo from start to end not to mention the polyrythms, one for each four limbs as he does on Pneuma and I wish there were stats on how many drumhits he does on an average Tool song compared to the likes of Bonham and Peart. My guess is Danny's in a league of his own on that score too, so think of the stamina he needs for a whole concert.

Limb separation is quite literally the hardest thing about drumming. Most people use their right foot for the bass drum, but the first time they sit down at a drum kit, their right hand and right foot want to do keep the same rhythm. It’s just how the brain is wired. So you have to break this tendency. Anyone who isn’t a beginner has had to develop some degree of limb separation, but the extent to which Danny can operate each limb independently is simply unnatural. Dude is a freak of nature with an amazing gift.

IF you decide to do more Tool, a word of advice- Look up song meanings before you start, shit is deep as hell. Watch lyric videos, DO NOT WATCH official videos, band does animation for them that can be jarring and disconnected from the music it will distract you too much. Understand tool songs are long and melodic, most songs around ten minutes with SLOW build ups and layers added throughout, that lead to the final pay off. Tool is an amazing band, but not for everyone. Got to be in the right mind space for it, sit back, relax, chill and wait for it. If you do you will discover some of the filthiest and grungiest guitar riffs, beat drops, trippy tribal drumming, and cleanest but angst filled vocals of anyone. Everyone will tell you, not just a band and a song, but an experience.

Excellent advice. I wish they would have at least known that it was a drum-cam (Sponsored by Vic Firth, no less) on Danny during a recent and likely-sold-out live TOOL concert. They were so flummoxed trying to figure out why the camera was only focused on Danny. So much so that they thought it was a one-man show. Similar to how you suggested an artistic music video could distract you from what's happening, I felt like the confusion over that misunderstanding was all-consuming for some of them. Too bad, really.

Danny is awesome and as some others have pointed out this was a drum cam from a Tool concert. You can see some of the other members at various points in the video, but it's really meant to focus on Danny. There's a lot going on in this song from a technical perspective that I think is more noticed by drum nerds (like the use of polyrhythms throughout), but it's easy to see why he's held in such high regard. If you want to check out some really good black drummers (as you mentioned) then guys like Eric Moore, Chris Coleman, Tony Royster Jr., Thomas Pridgen, and Larnell Lewis are all amazing and highly respected. Plenty more, but those are the first that come to mind. Eric Moore's "Terminator" video is one of my personal favorites. Another guy to check out is El Estepario Siberiano. He's a Spanish drummer that has blown up a lot over the last few years and is really fun and impressive to watch. Dude has unreal technical skills/chops. He'll almost certainly pop up in your recommended feed if you keep watching drum videos lol.

I'm 61 years old and have seen a boat load of great drummers across all musical genres, but I doubt I've ever seen a drum performance within the framework of a song that's this impressive. For me what separates Danny Carey from most drummers is his creativity and combination of power and finesse with the uncanny ability to change strike force in such a nuanced way. I've got one word to describe this song - MASTERPIECE.
The fact that this is live and just 1 part of an hour and a half show in front of thousands of people makes it so much more impressive. Danny the GOAT.
The whole band is there. The camera is on the drummer the whole time just so you can see what he's doing up there. Phenomonal!
POLYRHYTHMS!! Best drummer on the planet. He possesses perhaps the most difficult skill in drumming, limb separation. If you notice, each foot and hand can have its own rhythm occurring simultaneously, resulting in 3 or 4 different ones.
Watching the expressions on your faces change throughout the song is gold.

Note: Parabol/Parabola is listed as two songs, but you need to listen to them as one... they are two sides of the same coin... the lyrics are especially beautiful and spiritual... it is my favourite song to listen to when I am... centered...
Not just Danny everyone in this band do their thing
Talk about taking your profession to another level, wish I was that good at anything!
You guys crack me up. I still cant figure out the hits myself. Its just mesmerizing watching that guy play the drums!
WOW That was insane, I dont know how drummers do all that movement, its like they have 4 different brains in them or something, that dude is such a fantastic drummer. And yes them 'guns' were pretty nice too! heehe
The greatest was John Bonham, with his passing Neal Peart became the best alive. With Peart passing Carey became the best living drummer. He even played with the other members of Rush recently. Worth looking up.

I love and continuously learn fromJohn Bonham, Neil Peart, Danny Carey etc. But unfortunately, there is no (one best) drummer. Or singer, guitar player, automobile, football player etc. Other drummers that make me want to quit are; Tony Royster jr. Carter Beauford Larnell Lewis Mario Duplinter Matt Garstka ...and many more. Just don't want to make a crazy long list. There is no one best at anything. Just different styles, abilities and ideas.

Silly thing to say really. There are so many darned good drummers who are good at different things. I could name many but I think it's probably pointless.

Don’t forget Gavin Harrison
Danny Carey...one of the best living drummers in the world. Fact.
The quality of their live performance is so good that my guys here think he's buy himself playing to a track! Best shows I've ever been too. Period

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind. I lose myself between the sounds and open wide to suck it in, I feel it move across my skin.

@@stuartcollins82 I've done the math enough to know..... Tool's lyrics are multi-layered.
I’ve seen tool live 5 times since 2004 along with APC. Sooooo much talent
Appreciate you guys
You guys HAVE to do Tool - The Pot Just to get you guys started off. I felt like you got on the wrong foot with tool from the sober reaction that was recorded differently. Give The Pot a go you wont be dissapointed.

Larnell Lewis is an incredible drummer that you guys should react to, he plays in a band called snarky puppy. I suggest checking out Lingus, or What About Me.... Also he's one of countless incredible black drummers

Spot on! I’ve been drumming for 30+ years and after listening to Lingus, especially the keyboard solo portion, I have no idea what he’s doing or how it’s counted. And it’s amazing! Larnell is legit!
GREAT SHOW GUY'S, GOD BLESS YOU'LL!
Gonna watch them live in little over a month. For the second time. Tool is massive.❤
Tool so good they thought he was playing over the studio version of a song.
Definitely give a listen to more Tool! I've never heard Tommy Lee mentioned in the same sentence as Danny and Neil.

I love watching you guys. :)
DAMN!! And that was just one song! I can't imagine having to do an entire set! Just amazing!
I love how at the beginning my man in orange hoodie pointed out how it seemed like someone was doing percussion outside of Danny's drumming. I thought there was some other percussion with bongos at the least, and maybe someone doing the beginning and rim shots too. When the realization that hes playing a 3 piece percussion on his own, is mind blowing
You guys have been doin a lot of great reaction videos lately...really unique stuff that's different from a lot of other channels. If you get back into more underground/old school hip hop reactions like the Big L and Black Thought videos, check out Brother Ali on Sway doin the five fingers of death.
His is wearing a 33 because the song is in 33/8 Time subdivided as a measure of 7/8, 8/8 (4/4), 9/8 and 9/8. Then he plays with those subdivision in the bridge section of the song while also playing over the bars and keeping a consistent hand pattern and using different voices to change the overall time feel of the song. He is an absolute genius.

I think it’s more like he’s giving major props to one of the greatest to ever play the game, Mr. Larry Bird. Number 33 of the Boston Celtics. Maybe it means both. He’s polyrhythmic after all.

We opened for Tool way back in the day at a local club in OC California. Unreal how great they became and were totally cool people...! Keep on Rockin Boyzzzzzz
The whole band was playing, not just Danny. The camera was only on him, but they were all playing. Together.
The best band in the world!

Yall were saying everyone was there for him...this Is a love concert. The whole band is there playing. They just have a camera on him in this video to show off his skills. The dude really is crazy. All 4 limbs playing different beats at different tempos. Both legs are controlling the symbols and the bass drum. You see more and more the more you watch
