Too Close To Home: The Case Of Cynthia Hoffman
Ойын-сауық
⬇️ CASE UPDATE BELOW ⬇️
This case takes us to Anchorage, in Alaska, back to the summer of 2019.
When 19 year old Cynthia Hoffman failed to meet her sister one afternoon, her family could tell something bad had happened. Little did they know, a twisted web of lies would soon start to unravel, one that would take the police thousands of miles away, and leave everyone horrified.
In February 2023, Denali Brehmer pleaded guilty to murder:
lawandcrime.com/crime/catfish...
In Jan 2024, Darin Schilmiller was sentenced to 99 years. He will not be eligible for discretionary parole until he has served at least 45 years.

May I just add that the comments made by Denali’s sister that they had a “difficult” childhood does NOT excuse what her sister did. Thousands of us grow up in difficult and sometimes horrific childhoods, like myself, but I would NEVER think of killing my best friend or even a stranger. These claims are NOT justified excuses for abhorrent and criminal behaviour for ANYONE!!! Stop blaming your childhood for growing up to be a POS human as you lost that excuse as soon as you committed a horrific and brutal crime!! 😡😡😡

You’re absolutely right! Even though Denali (AKA Angela) had a traumatic/abusive childhood, it does NOT excuse what she did. It may explain why she had issues, but it does NOT constitute a claim of diminished responsibility. 90% of people with traumatic/abusive childhoods don’t kill their best friend.

It breaks my heart to see the dad talk as calmly as he can. The pain he feels is so evident, it's really sad. God bless him and give him strength to move forward with his life without his beloved daughter. Senseless crime.

One of the true crime channels I watch does an amazing job making sure people know that NOWHERE in the United States is it legally required to wait any length of time to file a missing person report. Not one day, not three. Police often suggest waiting because so many missing people are found quickly and safely. But then when it ends up that they're truly missing, the police are already way behind and the chances of finding them are low because they waited.

Especially when it relates to someone with an intellectual disability or a minor. But now that I think of it, people who go missing under abnormal circumstances are usually murdered within the first 24 hours. There’s really NO reason to require a specific amount of time before the police will start a report. Senseless….. I’d like to point out that this young woman’s father is indigenous which makes her as well. Law enforcement in Alaska tends not to put much effort into looking for missing indigenous women. It’s a well recognized problem in Alaska and Canada. I’m from Alaska and have seen firsthand how Natives are treated.

This is horrific. Many years ago when social media consisted of Msn messanger and Myspace, my young cousin was a victim of online bullying and catfishing. Pathetic people posing to be someone else in order to benefit themselves at the total expense of others with zero remorse. She was "catfished" by other students online pretending to be a boy that liked her and struck up a fake relationship, while she thought it was real. This went on for months online until it all came out and then they bullied, humiliated and embarrassed her to the point of hanging herself, in her closet at 13 years old. Can we please treat each other with respect and kindness, and help out people who need it. We have the potential to be much better than this. Sorry for the long msg. If you can do something small everyday to make someone else's day a little bit better/easier, then the world will be a little bit better because of you. I wish you all the best, and the strength and courage to get thru the worst. And I hope that help is there when you really need it, because many weren't so lucky. Cheers from 🇨🇦

I am sorry that you had to go through that as a child. My childhood was toxic and abusive, mentally, emotionally, physically and sexually. It took me well into my thirties to get proper help, instead of just being put on antidepressants, which didn't work, so I saw a psychiatrist. The trauma from my childhood, teens and twenties, had changed my brain chemistry, and I had had bipolar since, at least, my late teens, but I had depression long before that. If you knew me now, you would never guess that I was a complete wreck, and doing lots of crazy things when I had been manic. So while I have never killed or abused anyone, I can understand how her childhood may have affected her rational thinking. There are, and has been serial killers who have had traumatic childhoods, and there are those who come from good homes, who go onto murder people.

@@principecaprincipeca2243 they didn't know that at the time. A parent knows their child and should be listened too infact there shouldn't be any wait time on a missing person. I wasn't in touch with my mother for 2 days, I'm 44, and because of my personal history when she called in a welfare check they were at my door in 2 hours. Their policies need to change.
What despicable and evil human beings they all are! I find her so called friend more than demonic, really no words to fully express the horror of this very sad case!
The footage of Denali shows no remorse…whatsoever. She’s not sorry for what she did. She’s sorry she got caught.

I agree her face says it all... scum.
The family and father are a testament to her love and being so loved ❤️ this is so utterly sad bless them all ..
Cynthia was so beautiful inside and out and her poor family will be affected by this for the rest of their lives. It infuriates me. I wish the best for Cynthia's poor family 💔💕
This is why you can't trust anyone or what they say on the internet. I hope they rot in hell for what they did to Cynthia

In this case trusting what the the catfish said wasn't the problem. The problem was that she wasn't disgusted about it.
sad society we live in when lives are snuffed out for no reason
When Mr. Hoffman spoke at the end it made me cry..Rest in peace beautiful Cynthia..God bless the Hoffman Family 🙏❤️

Stupid and ridiculous to say that we have to wait 24 hours before police takes actions of a missing person, especially young females.

I'd love to see you cover that insane story that was documented on Channel 4 a few years back; whereby a boy groomed another boy, pretended to be a sexy female secret agent, then lured him into murdering him? It was an attempt at suicide by-proxy? There were so many twists and turns... I've never forgotten it

You can hear in Mr. Hoffman's voice how hard it is for him to not break down. Denali may have had a hard childhood, but it's pathetic and disgusting to hear that being used as an excuse for what she did. Lots of people had hard childhoods and they don't rape little girls and decide to kill their best friend because their friend makes an easy target.
Social media needs to be vigliant when it comes to people like darin, it needs to monitor posts and close down peoples profiles when they post things like he did! Deneli used Cynthia as a friend and as a person with a disability, she knew cynthina would follow anything she did, its so awful that even people you think are your friends can do this :( Well done to her dad for not believing what they had said about his daughter, Deneli says she didnt mean to do it but yet she is standing there with no emotion on her face no remorse at all, of course she meant to do it
WTF is wrong with some people?
we all need a dad like cynthia's
Shockingly craven, sheesh. Those kids were not firing on all cylinders. I just want to say I think this KZreadr did a great job with the editing and narration. It's a convoluted story with all the double identities and stuff, and yet it was presented well.
The sound and tone of your voice help immensely listening to these horrible human experiences. Your empathy, respect and kindness has earned you a place in this old Grandma's heart. Thank you.
Police asking anyone to wait to report someone missing is disgusting enough but asking them to wait to report someone with disabilities is abhorrent. They should be ashamed of themselves (which I doubt they ever were) 😪
To have gone threw all the challenges she’d had thrown at her and overcome them to have this happen.. life is extremely cruel 😢 RIP Cynthia ❤
She's amazed how far they can talk to someone through the internet. The internet goes all around the world how could you not know that
Is there ever a safe place free of crimes in this world?

My deepest condolences to the Father and Family 🙏 RIP Little Angel 😇
Her sister said she had a b😮ad life her poor sister NO the poor girl that has losted her life not your sister that a absolute monster to her friend
I don't understand how someone can just "Let Someone thru the internet or text messages have so much power over you." It takes a real piece of work type of person to fall hook 🪝 line and sinker for this. Let alone the monsters that seek out these sick harmful actions.
This is exactly why I have told my kids and grandkids NEVER let anyone tie you up. Even your best friend.
I’ve said before and many many people have said it….WHY are there SO MANY BAD people in this world want to hurt and/or murder young vulnerable girls and women. It’s so darned sad 😢. I hate these people!
I literally wait for your videos at this time every week. Thank you!

Just so everyone knows, it is *not true* that you have to wait 24 hours to file a missing person report. If the police try to stall you, go to the police station and file the report anyway, let them know you mean business. This case was so horrific that even if the police began looking as soon as Cynthia's father called, it wouldn't have saved her, but sometimes it _can_ make a difference. Poor Cynthia. She must have been so terrified, and heartbroken by the betrayal of her best friend. Rest in peace, sweet girl. You deserved so much better.
I have to pause this and come back later. Goodness. This is so vile and evil.
Is there an explanation for the appalling increase in these morally bankrupt, consciously void teenagers? What the actual ... is going on? Where are the parents/role models??? Sickening!
Just disgusting. God bless her family.
People who harm children need to know that their lives do not get to continue.
I don't care how bad your childhood was...there is no excuse to murder someone. R.I.P Cynthia.
So sorry for this precious girl and her precious family. 🙏🏻♥️
The pain in the dads voice. Heartbreaking
"I know I could have probably done something different." No shit, Denali.
I'm so, so sorry to Mr. Hoffman and his family. He's such a good dad and he's so proud of his little girl. I fully believe him when he says he'll be at every single hearing. He deserves that justice for his daughter. RIP Cynthia. All you wanted was to be a friend. You were way too good for this cruel, awful world.
I just LOVE the dad! What a class act! Cant wait for justice. ⌛️⚖️👊🏼
I 100% relate to and support the father. That these "kids" were so stupid as to believe they were going to get $9million for doing this sick BS, let alone evil enough to actually do this, defies comprehension. All 5 of them were equally convinced this was their path to riches, led by a sick catfisher that did all this for "entertainment". Especially Denali, how could she get this f**ked up, to consider this was a good idea???
Hey u ok..Every Saturday I look forward to seeing what you do... This is one of the best videos I've seen on you tube.very well put together 10/10 brilliant

I love the father and how he carry himself. You can tell he was raised right and didn’t play about his kids
21:05 u can see so much evil in Denali's eyes...and that evil grin too....she reminds me of one of the girls in the shanda sharer case (indiana, the 90s), the blonde...
I’d like to point out that this young woman’s father is a Native (indigenous), which makes her as well. There’s a long documented history of law enforcement in Alaska & Canada not putting any effort into the cases of missing indigenous woman. The general public are much more aware of this now and Native Americans are more comfortable being vocal when someone goes missing. I grew up in Alaska and still hear about Native Americans being mistreated during traffic stops and in local jails. The advent of body cams has really helped bring this to light. Sad, but true.
