Too Close To Home: The Case Of Cynthia Hoffman

Ойын-сауық

⬇️ CASE UPDATE BELOW ⬇️
This case takes us to Anchorage, in Alaska, back to the summer of 2019.
When 19 year old Cynthia Hoffman failed to meet her sister one afternoon, her family could tell something bad had happened. Little did they know, a twisted web of lies would soon start to unravel, one that would take the police thousands of miles away, and leave everyone horrified.
In February 2023, Denali Brehmer pleaded guilty to murder:
lawandcrime.com/crime/catfish...
In Jan 2024, Darin Schilmiller was sentenced to 99 years. He will not be eligible for discretionary parole until he has served at least 45 years.

May I just add that the comments made by Denali’s sister that they had a “difficult” childhood does NOT excuse what her sister did. Thousands of us grow up in difficult and sometimes horrific childhoods, like myself, but I would NEVER think of killing my best friend or even a stranger. These claims are NOT justified excuses for abhorrent and criminal behaviour for ANYONE!!! Stop blaming your childhood for growing up to be a POS human as you lost that excuse as soon as you committed a horrific and brutal crime!! 😡😡😡

You’re absolutely right! Even though Denali (AKA Angela) had a traumatic/abusive childhood, it does NOT excuse what she did. It may explain why she had issues, but it does NOT constitute a claim of diminished responsibility. 90% of people with traumatic/abusive childhoods don’t kill their best friend.

One of the true crime channels I watch does an amazing job making sure people know that NOWHERE in the United States is it legally required to wait any length of time to file a missing person report. Not one day, not three. Police often suggest waiting because so many missing people are found quickly and safely. But then when it ends up that they're truly missing, the police are already way behind and the chances of finding them are low because they waited.

Especially when it relates to someone with an intellectual disability or a minor. But now that I think of it, people who go missing under abnormal circumstances are usually murdered within the first 24 hours. There’s really NO reason to require a specific amount of time before the police will start a report. Senseless….. I’d like to point out that this young woman’s father is indigenous which makes her as well. Law enforcement in Alaska tends not to put much effort into looking for missing indigenous women. It’s a well recognized problem in Alaska and Canada. I’m from Alaska and have seen firsthand how Natives are treated.

This is horrific. Many years ago when social media consisted of Msn messanger and Myspace, my young cousin was a victim of online bullying and catfishing. Pathetic people posing to be someone else in order to benefit themselves at the total expense of others with zero remorse. She was "catfished" by other students online pretending to be a boy that liked her and struck up a fake relationship, while she thought it was real. This went on for months online until it all came out and then they bullied, humiliated and embarrassed her to the point of hanging herself, in her closet at 13 years old. Can we please treat each other with respect and kindness, and help out people who need it. We have the potential to be much better than this. Sorry for the long msg. If you can do something small everyday to make someone else's day a little bit better/easier, then the world will be a little bit better because of you. I wish you all the best, and the strength and courage to get thru the worst. And I hope that help is there when you really need it, because many weren't so lucky. Cheers from 🇨🇦

I am sick to the back teeth of hearing “she had a bad childhood” as an excuse. I, myself was a victim from birth to 15 years old, along millions of others but not once did I ever think of hurting another. It’s sickening what they did to this beautiful young lady. I sincerely hope they get the maximum. They should never ever be released. My heart goes out to Cynthia and her family, especially her Dad. I think it’s only when this court case is over, he’ll be able to grieve properly. He’s holding it together for the sake of his daughter and making sure they know, he’ll never let them get away with it and he doesn’t care however long this may take. Bless him. 💔😔💔

I am sorry that you had to go through that as a child. My childhood was toxic and abusive, mentally, emotionally, physically and sexually. It took me well into my thirties to get proper help, instead of just being put on antidepressants, which didn't work, so I saw a psychiatrist. The trauma from my childhood, teens and twenties, had changed my brain chemistry, and I had had bipolar since, at least, my late teens, but I had depression long before that. If you knew me now, you would never guess that I was a complete wreck, and doing lots of crazy things when I had been manic. So while I have never killed or abused anyone, I can understand how her childhood may have affected her rational thinking. There are, and has been serial killers who have had traumatic childhoods, and there are those who come from good homes, who go onto murder people.

Why would ANYONE make you victimize someone? No one who cajoles or demands or even wants you to violate someone is worthy of loving! If someone has r-pe fantasies involving minors, RUN. Don't walk. Run from that person, and call the authorities to let them know they may have CP on their computers. My god. If the police try to stall you, go to the police station and file the report anyway, let them know you mean business. I’d like to point out that this young woman’s father is a Native (indigenous), which makes her as well. There’s a long documented history of law enforcement in Alaska & Canada not putting any effort into the cases of missing indigenous woman. The general public are much more aware of this now and Native Americans are more comfortable being vocal when someone goes missing. I grew up in Alaska and still hear about Native Americans being mistreated during traffic stops and in local jails. The advent of body cams has really helped bring this to light. Sad, but true.
