Every case we cover is upsetting but this one was particularly tough to work on and really broke our hearts. Let us know your thoughts. Apologies for the congested narration. Covid lasted a long time and Alice’s voice was off for longer than we thought, but because we record so far in advance we couldn’t really take the time off. Back to normal next week 🖤

I’m so sick of the whole “They had a tough childhood. They were abused. THAT’S why they did this.” NO. They did it because they WANTED to. I had a tough childhood. I was physically, verbally, and emotionally abused by my mother. I have managed to go through life without raping/killing a single person.

Same! I was severely abused and I had lots of issues but I don't fucking murder 8 year olds! I'm sick of this bs excuse. And I'm sick they let these POS just walk out of prison. If someone raped a child, lock them up forever! Enough is enough.

We shouldn’t use traumatic childhoods to say “that’s why” as an excuse but as an explanation. Everyone handles trauma differently. Our brains and psyches are each different. Congrats to the both of you for rising above the trauma but not everyone is capable of that. We should take these factors into consideration of why a person commits crimes to weigh the possibility of rehabilitation and also as proof to use to help prevent future people from being so broken they hurt others.

I agree! We shouldn’t use the “they were abused as a child” bs as an excuse! Sure, it could explain why they did what they did, but it’s NOT AN EXCUSE! It’s not a “get out of jail” card, it’s not a “give him/her a lighter sentence” card! It should only be used as an explanation! Stop using this childhood trauma/abuse bs as an excuse!! I’m so sick of it!!

What makes murder an adult crime? Surely, an adult with a fully developed brain knows the implications of said crime, has the emotional capability to understand the impact and has real life experience in the adult world to know. A child on the other hand does not, so murder in a sense is an immature act of carelessness. Why should a child be treated like an adult? we need to protect children, the good and the bad. I am glad this kid got a second chance, it's a tragic case all round. An adult that kills a child is worse in my opinion.

Since he got tried and convicted as a juvenile, they could only sentence him up to 10 years, which means he will be due for release in 2025. @@gram5963 People need to stop romanticising children. It is well known that children can be incredibly cruel - you only have to look at the bullying statistics. Children are not 'innocent little beings'. They are ignorant, not innocent. Once they 'know' about things, they are just as capable of perpetrating those atrocities as an adult. Especially considering their brains aren't fully developed yet; they lack compassion, empathy, impulse control, and aren't fully cognisant of the consequences of their actions. For instance, if young boys had a fully functioning sex drive, and knew about sex, the sexu@l assault statistics in kindergarten and elementary schools would probably exceed that of grown men. They would be cornering little girls (and boys) all over the place, because they haven't learnt restraint or right and wrong yet. Children are not 'good' because they are 'innocent' - it's that they don't know about things yet, and their behaviour is constantly corralled and curbed by parents, teachers etc. Take that away, give them knowledge, and they would be monsters to rival, if not exceed, any grown adult.

There are sociopathic people who don’t kill others/inflict pain even though they don’t feel the same empathy as most, and I don’t believe that someone diagnosed with sociopathy but has otherwise never harmed/showed signs of harming anyone should be locked away. Plenty of people are capable of murder under the right circumstances, and we shouldn’t consider them guilty of it prior. But once they have crossed the line into hurting other people, there is no rehabilitation, because they won’t regret it. This case had no gray area. The rape and murder of a child is not a “mistake” someone can come back from. Appalling that the law was unable to bring justice.

I've been binging true crime for 25 years. I've watched ALOT. Few cases have pissed me off as much as this one. That boy and everyone who fought to keep him out of prison deserve nothing but slow drawn out agony. What a crass, ill-informed assumption about the killer’s mother. To all mothers and fathers whose children have blindsided them by committing crimes: it is not always your fault. Please don’t think that it MUST be, because of judgements many people automatically make. It is too easy to “go to the source” when it comes to blame. I can imagine the horror I would feel if a child of mine did this. And to Maddy’s mother, father, extended family and friends: I’m so sorry about the devastating loss of your daughter. I can barely imagine what you went through, not just at the time, but what you are still going through now.
