I'm 59 now but I've always held the motto that "if you go out together, you go home together" - for safety reasons. So sad and tragic that this happened to Libby and it has, unfortunately, happened to others in similar circumstances.

Well, In the 70s when we were out at parties etc, if a girl wanted to go home, there was no question, two or three of us would walk them home. It saddens me how young women are left to walk home late at night alone these days.

The detectives who review and decipher the cc tv are like super human. I can’t make out a single thing in those videos. There’s a road and what could possibly be headlights… I mean it’s really incredible work these folks do.

@@RedheadLondonthey can only tell because they essentially followed HER every move, or as much as possible, via the cameras, starting back at the club. And then saw the interaction with the perpetrator, when he approached her. It’s like putting puzzle pieces together. If they can find a solid starting point, where you can clearly identify the person you’re looking for in a frame, you can work backwards and forwards to follow their path of movement. Harder to do if you have no idea where you’re even looking for a person, and trying to identify an individual in a sea of people on the CCTV. I think it’s just as crazy to watch them identify a specific type of car when there’s no visual of a plate and an unclear video, just by analyzing things like how the headlights or brake lights show up in the video, etc.

@@Free420Love I suppose they followed the matchstick person step by step, and ASSUMED it was her, but you can't tell by those images who the person really was. With Sarah Everard, if it wasn't for his car number, they might not have got him either. She was wearing the yellow hat and checked trousers, so it made her stand out a bit on the dash cam. Imagine how many crimes would go unsolved if not for cameras and DNA.

@@RedheadLondon for sure CCTV has been a huge help - wish we had more of it in the U.S., it’s nonexistent in too many places where a lot of criminal activity happens. But in this case, they knew who it was because they saw the interaction outside the club with her, it was clearly her, her friends corroborated that, and then they picked her right back up near her house at the same time she would have been dropped off, and there was no one else around at that time. It wasn’t perfect evidence, but it was clear that it was her. In this case. It can definitely be very hard in others. We’re constantly advancing in technology, though, so, hopefully better and MORE cameras will be available in the future. There would definitely be a LOT more unsolved/cold cases over the last two decades if it wasn’t for the CCTC & personal security systems combined. Imagine if they would have been around 20+ years earlier than they started being used, when the majority of the prolific serial killers were at work in the 70s - mid-90s. Good point about the distinct clothing. I actually used to tell my girlfriends whom I knew walked home at night by themselves, usually after work, to wear a BRIGHT, visible article of clothing as they walked, in case something happened to them, because it stands out, and that might be THE only thing that someone remembers if police are asking about information related to an attack, assault, disappearance, etc, and could lead to recalling helpful information if they can recall seeing the victim that was wearing something memorable. Made more than a few friends brightly colored knit hats to wear for walking home in the winter over the years, after being attacked myself. Sad to think we all NEED to do that “just in case”, but it’s an easy way to potentially help yourself if you find yourself in a bad situation.

The escalation in this case is frightening. I see a lot of people blaming Libby's friends but I can't help but think if it hadn't been Libby, it would have been someone else. He was clearly stalking the streets in search of a victim. He is the only one to blame here. And, I hope he never sees the light of day again Rip Libby 💜

Yeah. I don't think people who blame her friends have ever been young, had a few drinks and been ready to party themselves. My friends and I took care of each other to a certain extent, but we didn't babysit each other. If someone didn't want to go home with us when the night was over, we didn't have the right to force them into a taxi and kidnap them to get them home. They were legal adults, so we had no say. This was a group of tipsy people who put her in a taxi, gave the driver money and has every reason to believe that she would get home safe. And she actually DID get home safely, but she decided to wander off after that. She would probably have done that even if someone had followed her home. But a lot of people writing comments on KZread can't comprehend that something bad can possibly happen to anyone they have spent time with, even after they have separated. This is an extremely sad case, but it didn't happen because of anything her friends did or didn't do. It happened because she decided to go for a walk AFTER she got home safely, and had the unbelievably bad luck to cross paths with this psychopath. HE is the only one to blame here.

Likely she would have done that when her friends went back to the club. It's just extremely unfortunate a psychopath was stalking the exact street she found herself wandering. It's so tragic but no one's fault other than the perpetrator.

How do you find someone lying in the snow, clearly drunk or ill and not call an ambulance?!

i was wondering the same. despite the fact she was telling numerous ppl that she was ok and needed no help. it's better to call police/ambulance and have them assess the person than to just expect they'll be ok. a very sad story. Predators come in all shapes and sizes.... love and light to Libby's family and friends ❤❤❤

It's better to call police in these cases. Ambulances are intended for medical emergencies, so unless the person is unconcious or injured, call the police. They will take her to the "drunk tank" to sober up.

@@thatcatsis485 I agree in principal with your observation. However, a person lying in the snow at night would prompt me to think of someone being ill. How ill? Hard to say unless you are a health care professional. Even if smelling alcohol on them, alcohol poisoning can be life threatening. Better to be safe than sorry. Here in Canada we have tiered responses where calling police can trigger ambulance and fire depending on the circumstances. ❤️ from 🇨🇦

I've been in similar situations (well, when I was young) and I didn't just ignore that my friend might have needed assistance if they weren't thinking rationally for themselves. I’ve done the same walk from Welly blackout drunk with my equally drunk friends. I was very lucky nothing that bad ever happened. I went to uni here and still live there. I live near the memorial, and this case will haunt Hull forever. The amount of campaigning and interviews her mum has done since is a lot, she’s a very brave woman! She even requested to meet her daughters killer in prison but the coward refused 😡

It came to light that he'd been inviting girls over from Tinder, and was secretly filming them, to pass onto to his buddies. Truly vile creatures.

I’m a cab driver so for once I feel as though I’m qualified to speak on a subject with some sort of guile. In this kind of instance where one girl is so drunk that she can barely stand, I will always ask the group if one person can sacrifice their night out & come with the intoxicated girl. Because you never know what can happen. You could get to the destination & she’s totally passed out, you could get there and the alcohol especially if drinking spirits could still be hitting her & she’s actually a lot more drunk when arriving at the destination than she was at the start of the journey and you have to physically aide or in some cases even carry them into their own house - which does happen albeit rarely. The other common problem is that the destination given at the taxi rank is incorrect and the person in the car is too drunk to tell you where they live. So then you have the situation where you have to go through their belongings with their consent to try to ascertain where they live, failing that you have to take them to the police station until they sober up. Its a good thing that all U.K. taxi drivers need to pass all kinds of background checks to prove they are a decent human being. In this situation it’s hard to establish fully where the blame lies. Can’t blame Libby for drinking too much because at that age you don’t know your limits & you need nights like this to figure out your own alcohol tolerance. The friends can’t be entirely blamed because they did responsibly get her into a cab & send her home. Maybe someone could have gone with her but I certainly wouldn’t put the blame at any youngsters door for not doing so. Maybe the cab driver could have done more to make sure she was ok, but at the same time I understand fully why he doesn’t want to because once the person is out of the car & no cameras or microphones are around - it’s one persons word against another. In this instance I would have knocked the car off & walked her to her actual door of the building and at least made sure she was inside or found someone that knew her that could take over. Perhaps some things could have been done differently to try to reduce the risk of what happened, but at the end of the day…. In a big city like hull with lots of drunk young girls….and a guy out there lurking around with sinister intent. It was just gonna be the first one that he found on their own and very drunk. That unfortunately happened to be Libby. RIP to the beautiful young lady & I hope the friends don’t beat themselves up too much, they’re young & naive and loving their lives. Maybe a 30+ year old would have seen things a bit differently and gone back with her, but that’s hindsight and the knowledge that comes with experience of life. Just a tragic loss all around.

Thank you for sharing your experience and thoughts. In my country, we aren't safe in a taxi, so most of the time when a friend took a taxi, doesn't matter if she was sober or a bit drunk, we wrote the licence plate and call her asked to call us as soon as she arrived if we were at a place with a phone (before cellphones) or at least we had that info. Now with Uber and smartphones, friends can share their location or send a text immediately when they arrive at home, that's a code. It's good also that most drivers, specially at night, wait until one has safely entered home to leave. I honestly think that there are preventive measures that can be taken, but there's only one to blame here. No one else is to blame but the man who stalked and took Libby, hurting her and killing her in one of the most henious ways.

Libby’s my colleagues niece. It’s really heartbreaking to see the effects on the family such a tragedy leaves. To this day they keep her memory alive...she never deserved what this disgusting monster did

Lisa Squire is an extraordinarily generous and brave lady, to want to meet her daughter’s murderer without any hatred is a testament to her grace and class. You know what I realized. And it's the reason your content is so top-notch. A lot of YT TC stuff is about murder but focuses on grizly facts and doesn't show (enough) human empathy for the victims. And other times, it's the reverse. But you manage to show empathy and explain the evidence, crime, etc, in a real, researched way. I think you're the best at this, basically.

This case really upsets me😢 What a awful way to die. In this case a prison is just not enough of a punishment. RIP Libby.

This case happened in my city and I’ll never forget the day it was reported she was missing then when she was found… I’ll never forget this case, she should’ve been safe in Hull and I’m so deeply sorry and saddened for her family and Libby herself… rest in peace you beautiful girl 👼💔

He's a sociopath. Of course he was never going to meet with her mother and she needs to give up on him telling her how her daughter was at the end. If she did meet with him he'd just say something to hurt her more. That's what they do.

So many people were offering to help her that night while out she was out walking prior to that guy showing up. So sad

I was wasted & wandering around on my own in the middle of London one night years ago & a female bouncer at a club told me to come in, sat me down & gave me a pint of water, then told the bar staff not to serve me. Bouncers can & do exercise empathy & common sense, but sadly it's rare. If it's freezing cold & it's a young lady, just let her in & put a 'don't sell me booze' rubber stamp on her hand.

It is shocking that you were being served while drunk earlier but it is good that later the bar staff refused to serve you. I don't understand the pleasure of being intoxicated, vulnerable and out of it and open to accidents and all sorts of thing. Many people don't take any sort of personal safety responsibility but that is their choice, no wonder predators have easy pickings

That's not a reasonable expectation to put onto these establishments. They have absolutely ZERO duty of care to babysit some drunk idiot.

If society lets these sex pests know they can get away with "milder" forms of their predatory behaviour, they will continue doing those and escalate. And then his mother saying that his depraved sexual predator of a son is a good boy and respects women (LOLz) tells us the rest of what we have to know about how he turned out like this.

The problem was apprehending him as he simply wasn't on the police radar. The guy sounds like a complete psychopath who his his offending from his wife, so the fact that his mother couldn't connect him to such a heinous crime is perhaps not indicative of anything other than him being an expert at covering up his sexual deviancy when he wasn't in a position to act on it.

However, his deluded Mum said that AFTER he had pled guilty to masses of offences against women while married so how on earth could she say he respected women when he himself said he didnt!

This is my home town, the university I go to, the nightclub I have been going to since I was 17. It freaked everybody out and put most of us girls on edge about going out. So sad what happened to her

I never usually comment on youtube videos but I just wanted to thank you for focusing your videos on the victims rather than the perpetrators as I find alot of true crime channels focus too much on the perpetrator and the victims get lost and forgotten in some cases which is heartbreaking for them and their families. :(

Multiple people chose to stop to try and help her but none of them took the initiative to call emergency services which is what any decent person would do. They could’ve called, given the location and description and left. You should be able to get drunk without someone taking advantage of that and murdering you.

I've said it on another video. My bestfriend and I were with a lot of other friends tailgating super early in the morning. We ALWAYS knew the plan if one of us wandered. She needed the restroom before we went into the game. We were drunk by 9am. I took her bag and went into the game and realized she was gone to long. Looking down her phone was with me. I knew walking out I wouldn't be allowed back in. I found cops and told them. I ran out the game towards our meeting spot and she was in a car with strangers. I ripped her out the car and the cops allowed us back into the game. FIND friends that won't leave you behind!!

As someone who was at the university at the time and helped searched for her after she went missing. This was too close to home. I walked up and down that road multiple times alone and intoxicated. It hurts my soul that this happened to her. I'll remember her everyday. Thank you for coving her case. I hope he rots in jail.

If she doesn't want help just call the police and have them stop her.

Cases like this always bring back the memories of my drunken nights and the dangers I put myself in many times when I was younger, all because of alcohol. I thank God for protecting me from myself and others who wanted to do me harm. I went through something like Libby and, if it wasn't for God to put people close to me that night to save me, I'd probably not be here today. But I had many other nights where my "friends" chose to party instead of making sure I was safe. Please, women, don't drink yourselves to oblivion! Don't count on "friends" because they'll most like leave you on your own as Libby's did.

I had very kind friends who all watched out for each other, but I myself put myself in horrible situations. I was young and honestly never realized what danger I put myself in until years later

Smh I started drinking at 14 on New Year’s Day 2010. & used to get BEYOND WASTED ! I’d fall flat on my face & jump right back up like “fuuuccckkk biiitchhhh let’s get another fvcking drinkkkk” 🤦🏽‍♀️ I’m now about to be 28 & I haven’t had a drink since my birthday May 4th 2020 but even before then I had already started only drinking on occasion by 21 because I was just over it. I don’t even like clubs or anything like that, I’m a full blown couch potato now & I’m glad because this couldn’t ended up being my story. I was ALWAYS by myself (loner) & making temporary friends while out being ridiculously friendly & oblivious to everything else around me.

So God protected you? By that logic God wanted Libby to be raped and murdered. You are claiming God choose to put people with you to help you. Then he chose not to do that with Libby and instead sent a rapist. How about just accepting God doesn't do jack shit to help or otherwise. If he did we could see statistically that religious people who prayed would have better outcomes in life. There have been many double-blind studies that prove this isn't true. Sick people do 100s of times better with modern medical intervention and no better through praying. Because God isn't doing anything. The fact is, she should not have been drinking to such drunkenness that she had to be babysat like a child by her friends. Not victim blaming her, but the world is a nasty place, and women are already at a disadvantage as it is. Why the hell put yourself at even more of a disadvantage by drinking so much in public that you cannot function? If she doesn't get shit-faced that night, she would still be alive because she would have never been put into the position to run into that piece of shit in the first place.

The friends did their part. I don’t blame them for putting her on a cab instead of going with her. They were having a good time, probably drunk and didn’t feel like interrupting their fun and/or think about the potential dangers. I’ve put a very drunk friend on a cab before, but only because the driver was another friend’s brother and she had a phone on her. Hindsight is 20/20 guys, don’t be so quick to judge.

If you are a decent person and/or you are in a group, and you find someone, who is clearly drunk, and alone on the street when it's already very late, you don't leave even if this person tells you she/he is ok!! You call an ambulance and wait with this person till the help arrives, period!! This is what you do. Because we live in a world full of predators who actually do search for the victims and sometimes they wait for an 'opportunity', exactly for such vulnerable victims as Libby. So to all young people: please remember this, if you encounter a vulnerable person, drunk or not but even confused, alone late at night, please call the ambulance even if they tell you it's all ok, and wait with this person till the ambulance arrives. Rip Libby. I send my warm thoughts to her family and friends from Poland. I'm sorry that this crime was committed by a member of my nation. But we know evil is in all nations, places, people of all races and sexes. Tragic.

That's exactly what you do. Put in a taxi with money and address. The cab dropped her literally on her doorstep. Not the friends fault she wandered off. They could have taken her home, but the ending could have the same; she wandering off from her flat. This is not her friends fault. They did everything right.

NO. Also, stop acting like you were in the conversation between her friends and her. They may have very well offered to leave with her but she refused them. We don't know. But you people act like they just left her to her own devices. They made sure to get a cab, see who TF was driving the cab, even the cab driver looked after her a bit, and only then did they go about their business. Stop with the lack of accountability.

I remember when this story broke. Hull wasn't too far away from me in a neighbouring city and it was a very unnerving since my sister had started uni and was working a night shift, which was cheaper for her to walk home after. I made her install at least two different family tracking devices on her phone and thankfully, nothing untoward has ever happened. I also always told her, if she goes on a night out, NO-ONE is to be left on their own. If one wants to leave, you all leave. Doesn't matter if someone wants to keep partying; if something truly awful happens to anyone in the group, you won't have anyone left to party with again. Such an incredible shame that has happened to Libby. Gone far, far too soon. May she rest peacefully. At least that vile pervert is off the streets. Hope he rots.

Libby’s friends realising that she’s too intoxicated, they responsibly booked a taxi to take her home safely. She then directed the driver to drop her off at some dark park for some strange reason. She then proceeded to go sit on a bench, all alone, in the middle of night and still drunk. A predator prowling the night looking for a victim spotted her and the rest is in the documentary. Some people here saying that her friends should’ve taken her home as she was intoxicated, that’s a big ask to expect a group of young varsity students, on a night out enjoying themselves, to stop and take her home. She’s an adult, she was drinking at a fast rate compared to the others, and they did a responsible thing to book her a taxi home. What she decided to do afterwards is not their problem. I’ve seen and heard of these young people who go on a nice night out, allowing their mate to walk home alone or not even bothered to book them transport home, but it was not the case here

Adults are deemed responsible enough to handle their liquor and be out and about in the real world on their own. If they need a babysitter then they shouldn't drink or go out late at night.

Actually I’ve heard multiple other stories where the victim’s friends didn’t do half as much as Libby’s did. It was definitely a problem that she left her phone at home. So sad when someone so young dies.

No one ‘blames’ the victim. The fact remains however that the harm was out there waiting to happen and it is the decisions of the eventual victim that propelled them right into harm’s way. It matters not a jot when you are dead that you were the innocent party and just very drunk after a night out. The world can be a very dangerous place and as we keep learning you can’t rely on others to keep you safe.

A few other cases where women have died, the friends just left them completely to their own devices. My daughter keeps telling me that she should be able to go for a walk alone and I said yes you should be but that's not the world we live in. My heart hurts for her family.

I mean she did technically make it home safe. They found her keys in the garden directly outside her front door - clearly she had tossed them. She chose not to go inside her home. There’s a good chance that even if her friends took her home personally that she would have gone back out again.

I saw other videos about this case. But this was easily the most detailed regarding the chronology of the case and the investigation itself. Sigh... Like, it's easy to say "Oh, the friends should've stayed with her" or whatever, but like how her mother apologises profusely for failing to protect her daughter, her friends are probably beside themselves with guilt already. The sad, pathetic, disgusting, empty excuse for a human being who did this, on the other hand, is unable to feel that guilt. He deserves the hate and blame, because he won't put it on himself no matter what.

Rule 1 of any night out: No one left behind. If one of the squad is too drunk; at least one of you takes them home and make sure that they stay there. You can have another night at the club but a friend cannot be replaced. I don’t drink and so on nights out as a student, I made sure I knew where all my friends were and if it meant I had to go home early with one of my friends, then I did.

Excellent coverage of this very sad case..

While this case didn't end the way anyone had hoped, I think the police deserve huge credit for the way they reacted. Too many times, especially here in the US, we hear the initial response of "she's an adult, she can do and go where she wants", "give it 24 hours and see if she shows up" etc. The way the police immediately took Libby's disappearance seriously should be the standard.

Her friends should not have left her all alone, it's so sad and heart breaking

They're not friends their party buddies that will drop you once your no fun, all young people need to learn that the hard way sadly and find real ones.
