What kills me is that for life insurance, they weigh you and they used BMI to determine your policy and premiums. You can be a body builder and have a very similar premium to someone who is overweight.

Body builders probably are as unhealthy as similarly overweight people though. We’ve all been tricked into believing that lean is better. But if you’re constantly cutting and bulking, you’re probably not healthy. Your heart is still taking a lot of strain. Im not really convinced that someone who weighs the same fat as muscular is actually unhealthier. If you don’t do cardio, your heart isn’t in shape and that’s one huge drivers of death in the US.

They do know that and that is the way they can get higher premiums to keep their profits up.

I needed this video. The last two years I have really focused on my lifting. I’ve gained about 15 lbs, but I’m in the same jeans and my hip to waist ratio is way different, yet my BMI has me at overweight (142 lbs at 5’3”). Honestly the mental weight of the “overweight” label stresses me out. I work so hard to maintain a healthy weight! On the issue of food deserts. So I grew up an hour from a grocery store, with a working mom who didn’t prioritize food or nutrition. The majority of my meals as a child came from a box or can, and IF I saw a vegetable it was from a can. Fruit was considered a “treat”. We did have healthy beef and pork, as we raised our own, and in the summer months tomatoes, squash, and a few other garden veggies from our small garden. Still, most of my meals that weren’t from a box were fried (fried squash for example). I struggled with my sugar level from the time I was 11 until I left for college and has control over my own diet. I always stayed a small size, but my health suffered, and still suffers from the effects of this. As I’ve aged, I’ve discovered my Mom has almost NO nutritional knowledge. I don’t know the answer, but America needs to do better when it comes to our food and our education around it.

Amazing points! Thanks so much for this. As a working mom myself I can absolutely see how hard it is to make time to prioritize my kids food and nutrition - even though I know how essential it is - I still struggle with that. I don't know the answer either but it seems like part of the problem is the incentives of our leaders. Problem seems to come down to the quality of life here making it very hard for the average person to just survive.

Thank you for this kind and encouraging video. I've been overweight/obese my whole life, stemming from asthma medications that made me ravenous all the time and never having a support system that encouraged me -- my family shamed me often (like, as early as 8 when, at 8 years old, the responsibility is not on me). A few weeks ago, I weighed in at the heaviest I've ever been and am finally taking it seriously at 24. Thank you for recognizing reasons why weight loss is so difficult.

I love this video. Thank you. I used to focus on the scale as well and get frustrated with the numbers and how my clothes fit etc. Weight is comprised of body fat, water weight and muscle mass so we have to tackle all three!

This was perfect. Thank you for sharing the wisdom and the pictures. I struggle so much with the scale. I married a bodybuilder and for the past 5 years my weight has been going up because I have been trying to get stronger. Which i have however i beat myself up because of the scale. I have put on some fat as well so that definitely doesn't help. But this has encouraged me so much. i am going to definitely start taking progress pics.

Thanks for sharing this! I’m glad you said what you did about overweight people saying they are healthy when they’re obese because they aren’t. I know someone personally who says they are healthy because their blood work comes back alright, but has a lot of other problems due to their excessive weight. It’s sad and their life is being robbed from them in ways they know and don’t know because they can’t even do a lot of things. I can’t and I’m just overweight…

Love you I really benefited from this message re the scales being one part of the whole picture today. I am from the UK I wouldn’t say we are the healthiest nation but we have access to good quality foods ( well the majority do, I know not everyone is so lucky) and we have the National Health service. I feel lucky and thank you I feel motivated x

I haven't watched your videos in ages, but today I happened upon this at exactly the time I needed it! You are a very similar height to me. I am 5' 1" and around 134lbs atm!! I was actually thinking of cutting to lose weight because my weight is higher than my usual 'normal', but I feel like it means i have to deprive myself of anything delicious 😢😢 But your video is making me rethink. I started a strength training program about 2 months ago and to be honest, I haven't been completely clean with my diet because I have been trying to find balance and a diet that allows me to eat treats. I don't know whether to just carry on as I am after your video, as I don't think I look overweight until I weigh myself. I definitely feel like I could be leaner though. I don't think I look as lean as you.😢 If I carry on working out, maybe I will look leaner. I feel like my body is changing though.

Ahh comparison is def not what I wanted in throwing those pics in there! It was to make the bmr point. Finding YOUR balance and what is sustainable for you is the right answer. Definitely would binge during the times I focused too much on “eating clean” 💚

@@heyitsjuliana be honest the comparison was helpful! I have felt like I was overweight but this made me realise that I can stay at this weight without the need to lose weight. I didn't make this point, but BMI really messes with my head, as do the scales. Hence my dilemma. I still can't quite process that I can be at a higher weight than my usual normal but not be fat😊 I also love it that you mentioned thinking about how you feel, whether you're stronger etc.. I definitely feel stronger and like my body is changing. My waist is definitely smaller too!

BMI has been flawed from the beginning. I encourage people to check out the podcast episode about BMI from Maintenance Phase. For scale weight in my most recent cut I lost only 8ish pounds but I look completely different. I even put on a bit of muscle at the beginning and am in the 99th percentile for muscle mass. My quad separation is finally starting to show which is WILD for a pear shape like me. But if I look at a BMI chart, I'm barely skating the line for "normal" weight. And during my bulking phase I was under 25% body fat (21 to 32 is considered healthy for women) but considered overweight on the BMI chart. Also which BMI number was classified as overweight was shifted down in the last ten years which suddenly increased the seeming number of overweight people. Throughout the history of humanity there have been skinny people, fat people, petite people, big-boned people. BMI is much too generalized to understand an individual's health.

Look up H-PYLORI, I was diagnosed a couple years ago, changed my diet in the pandemic and realized it was all true..many many suffer from this and we don’t know it.
