LAY HO MA! Imagine a bowl of hot fluffy rice flavoured with garlic, onions, spices, and tomato - this is definitely going to be a weekly favourite. Join me in this episode and learn how to make a delicious and easy one pan lentil rice recipe. Let's begin
Ingredients:
1 cup brown lentils
1 cup basmati rice
3 pieces garlic
small piece ginger
1 red onion
1 tomato
2 tbsp olive oil
pinch of salt
1/2 tsp cumin
1/2 tsp chili powder (cayenne pepper)
1 1/2 tsp sweet paprika
1 tsp coriander
pepper to taste
1 1/2 cups veggie stock
few lemon wedges
few sprigs parsley
Directions:
1. Place the brown lentils into a large bowl. Fill with about 3 cups of water and let it soak for 8 hours or overnight. Then, strain out the lentils and set aside
2. Rinse and drain the basmati rice two to three times. Then, set aside
3. Finely chop the garlic and ginger. Dice the red onion and tomato
4. Heat up a sauté pan to medium heat. Add the olive oil and red onions. Sauté for 4-5min
5. Add the garlic and ginger. Sauté for 1-2min. Add the lentils and sauté for about 1min
6. Add the rice, salt, cumin, chili powder (or cayenne pepper), sweet paprika, coriander, and pepper
7. Add the tomato and sauté for about 1min. Add the veggie stock and give the pan a stir to deglaze
8. Turn the heat to medium high and bring to a boil. Then, cover and cook on medium low for 15min. After 15min, turn the heat off and let the rice continue to steam covered for a further 10min
9. Plate the rice and garnish with fresh lemon juice, parsley, a drizzle of olive oil, and freshly cracked pepper

@@theworldisastage3425 doesn’t look like they were cooked ahead. From what I saw or understood, the Lentils were soaked 8 hours. The rice was rinsed 3 times to rid the extra starch. They were cooked when all were added to the pot. That’s my understanding but I could be wrong.

A lot of KZread content creators seem to feel like they have to pull silly faces, speak very loudly, strike stupid poses, jump up and down, and otherwise create a clown show. It's really odd. I wonder if KZread encourages this in some sort of "tips for content creators" or something? I don't know. But yeah, it's refreshing when a content creator actually looks and sounds like a normal person.

Thank you for this perfect one-pan recipe! Tofu and zucchini was prepared in the same pan and set aside till the lentil was cooked. I would never ever destroy a one-pot dish 🙂

That looks and sounds absolutely fabulous, and I'm going to have to make it very soon! I truly appreciate the way you make your videos, Mr. Yeung; you don't talk constantly throughout, but just enough to help your viewers know what to do, and you speak so gently and quietly, with that lovely low key music in the background---well, for me it's like watching a beautifully choreographed dance, of sorts. Such a refreshing change from cooking videos where someone uses "flash and dazzle" techniques, along with almost nonstop talking, to keep their viewers engaged. You don't need any of that, and I appreciate it very much. Your beautiful, yet simple food presentation does the talking for you.

We have a similar recipe called khichri, which is usually eaten when a person has an upset stomach. So the local version doesn’t have a lot of chilli powder but a lot of cooling whole spices such as green cardamom, fennel seed, salt and some black pepper. The spicier version is eaten as a regular dish which is accompanied with a yoghurt side and some pickle and pappadom.
