This 1974 #1 Hit RIPPED OFF Another #1 Hit That Had ALREADY RIPPED OFF ANOTHER #1!-Professor of Rock

Ойын-сауық

Coming up an interview with one of the 70s most prolific and successful bands… America! They blazed onto the scene as rookies with a #1 hit with A Horse With No Name and their debut album also hit #1 and then they won the cursed Grammy for Best New Artist. History has not been kind to many of the winners of that award but this America blew UP THAT CURSE with several hits IMMEdiately after including today’s smash Sister Golden Hair that had a very depressing opening line. The song originally sat on the shelf for a year not getting a release on their previous album. But the timing was right when they went to work with the biggest producer in the world, George Martin and they rewarded him with his 1st #1 hit outside of producing the Beatles. They got some flack for a pretty tame swear word in the song and admits he borrowed from another #1 song of the time which is funny because that particular song would lose a lawsuit for ripping off another song. The interview is coming up next on Professor of Rock.

Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. If you’ve ever visited the dark side of the moon sonically you’ll dig this channel of deep musical nostalgia. Make sure to subscribe below and click the bell so that you never miss out on our daily content. Also, check us out on Patreon.
I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs and albums. Stories you won't get anywhere else. We have a great show today with one of the biggest bands of the 70s… They blazed onto the scene when their very first single and album both hit #1. After A Horse With No Name and I Need You became smash hits America became a household name. Then They were nominated for the Best New Artist Grammy award along with some famous contemporaries including Loggins and Messina, Harry Chapin, Eagles, and John Prince. They won but luckily they were able to avoid the famous best new artists Grammy curse…
if you don’t know what I'm talking about we’ll have to do a whole show on it. Many of the winners of that award had major issues after getting that Grammy. Everything from the sophomore jinx to death. Remember Milli Vanilla won that particular award. Some may say the curse came later but many winners before America had major career setbacks. Bobby Gentry, the Swingle Singers, and Jose Feliciano never had another major hit after winning it. Let me know in the comments if you’d like me to do a show on it in the future.
Well, America blew the curse out of the water as their next few singles were major hits. Then a few years after they got a chance to work with the most famous producer of all time George Martin who helmed dozens of #1 hits with the Beatles. They actually gave him his first #1 hit outside of the Fab Four with today’s song subject Sister Golden Hair. Up next Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley of America tell the story of this 70s classic, how the song sat on the shelf for a time, and how they beat the logic that you can’t have a hit song with a downer opening line. and the tame swear word they caught flack for and we’ll try to find out who Sister Golden Hair is?

One of the remarkable things about them is that Dewey and Gerry have always been so open about their music, their history, always willing to rehash their history without braggadocio and without negativity. They seem to realize that they were fortunate to create some excellent music at the right time. And it was all excellent, in my opinion. They deserve all of the accolades they've received over the years. (And their concerts are so incredibly well orchestrated). We are fortunate listeners and fans.

The thing is professor, you always touch on such great music and artists!! I grew up in the 70's. I was exposed to all that unbelievable and wonderful music and not just 70''s Pop but Classic Rock, Ol' School R & B, etc...I recall the days of cruising in my car and jamming to America and so many others. I consider myself very lucky in the sense that I grew up in what I believe was arguably the best decade of music ever. The best part of your videos is getting to know the stories behind these timeless tunes. At the time I really never knew what a song was truly about, I just enjoyed them and interpreted them to where I was and who I was with. So I have such joy, unforgettable and wonderful memories that this music always brings me, my friends, a crush, etc...I will keep on watching and look forward to the next video!! And one more thing, I totally appreciate your dad for sharing his love and knowledge of the music with you. A good man for sure!!

I always laugh when these Foolls out here say the 80s was the Best Decade or the 90s was the Best... The 70s were better than the 80s and 90s Combined ! All Genres of music were bangin' in the 70s at the same time ! Rock, Soul, Funk, Disco and Pop were all pumping out Tons of GREAT music in the 70s ! Even Country music stars were pumping out great Cross-over hits ! And Country is like the worst music ever usually... But any genre can be good if they write good songs with good music... Johnny Cash, Tanya Tucker, Glen Campbell, Vicky Lawrence and others made some good songs in the 70s... Plus Motown, The Sound of Philadelphia with Gamble and Huff... Led Zeppelin... The Rolling Stones, Elton John... Barry White... Earth Wind and Fire, Kool and the Gang... Jim Croce... The Ohio Players... The Commodores... Where Lionel Richie made his Best music ! (We won't even talk about his embarrassing Solo crap like Dancin' on the Ceiling) ! There was nothing like the 70s... Even the movies and TV shows were fantastic, All Time Classics !

@@rebeccacorbin1590 I think the Hair bands ruined Rock ! That's why Grunge was able to take over... Plus they did put out some Great music... But the thing that really ruined music ? DIGITAL ! Napster started it and by 2008, the music was finished ! No more CDs meant a huge Drop off in Money for the Record labels and the Artists ! Like 50 Cent said... By 2008, all the money was gone from the music business... He said he made $38 Million dollars on his first album in 2003... Rock was already finished after Grunge fizzled out... Rap was Great until 2008... R & B was finished...Pop is nowhere near what it used to be... Now all genres Suck ! Rap is terrible... No Rock... No R & B... Now it's just Taylor Swift, The Weekend and Bad Bunny... and Drake ! 😢

When I think of 70's radio this band pops into my mind. Talented guys and some really good radio songs. They capture the sound of that era very well. That's no knock, not many do it so well. Like Jackson Brown singing...These Days...it's never dated, sounds as fresh today as ever. Sure...it takes me back to a specific time, even the very day I heard it, but my kids thought it was new 20 years on....

I was 12 years old when "You Can Do Magic" was a hit & we watched the video numerous times. When the 1st Edition of the "Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits" came out after that, I remember being shocked finding out this group America had numerous hits in the 70s, including 2 numer one hits! Over the next 2 years, I started learning more about them &, to my surprise, I knew most of the 70s hits-I just didn't know it was them. Bought "History" in early 1985 & became a fan. On a side note, I followed Dan Peek the last few years of his life & even bought a signed copy of his autobiography off his website which he personalized for me.

Grew up in the 70s listening to all their records. Learned how to play "Sister Golden Hair" on guitar as a teenager and when playing it with my parents around, I used "darn" instead of "damn." But that was on rare occasion. Got front row seats to see them in Columbus, Georgia Aug. 8, 2003, when my kids, who were big fans also, were 11 and 8. So many nostalgic feelings about America and Sister Golden Hair. A guy I dated in High School gave me an America album. I broke up with him (just no chemistry), but feel kind of guilty that I still have the album! My brother was love-struck with a very blonde girl whose family moved to another state. He would play his guitar and forlornly sing Sister Golden Hair repeatedly. Happy ending…they eventually got together and had nine children and currently have 13 grandchildren!
