Many Didn't KNOW What This 80s Hit was CALLED cuz the Song's TITLE Is NEVER SUNG! -Professor of Rock

Ойын-сауық

I love stories like our next one. I had the chance to interview one of the nicest guys in music. He’s the equivalent of that children’s story the little engine who could. Technically he only had one hit… It was one of those rare songs where the song’s title is never said in the song…Romeo’s Tune by Steve Forbert… Forbert was a small-town guy who went to new york and made it in music. Truth is Romeo’s tune came out at the wrong time when his type of music was out of style. But the song broke through on the charts and hit #11 and the mystery girl that this song is about has never been revealed. See if he’ll tell who it’s about next on Professor of Rock. The greatest underdog story of 1979 come full circle today with Steve's recollection of this one hit wonder that dominated 70s radio plus info about his latest record!

Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. If you remember sending away for something through the mail and that 6-8 weeks for delivery felt like 2 years you’ll dig this channel of musical nostalgia Make sure to, subscribe below right now. you will dig this channel. We also have a Patreon you'll want to check out. It helps us keep it a daily channel and we bring you in as an honorary producer on each episode.
It’s time for another edition of our series Bottled Lightening where we celebrate a song or album that was king for a day or many days. Here we honor artists and bands that rocketed up the charts… but for reasons unknown weren’t able to sustain that success. Called by some ‘one-hit wonders’, we celebrate them instead as lightning in a bottle. On previous episodes we have covered Broken Wings by Mr. Mister, Wishing Well by Terence Trent D’Arby, and She Drives Me Crazy by Fine Young Cannibals.
Today I”m going to get right into the interview that we did. It’s very interesting. It’s an artist that everyone called the next Dylan… He had a lone top 10 hit in 1979 that he wrote about a girl… For decades he’s kept the mystery girl a secret… Up next see if he tells us who it’s about. He also shares insight about his latest album. Find out where he is now and the impact this song has had since… See if you recognize the song. here’s the interview.
I want to take a quick break and recognize our sponsor Zenni Eyewear… With Inflation rocketing out of control right now you can get hundreds of pairs of glasses starting at $6.95 You design your own pair, your own features and you can try them on virtually to see how you look before you buy. click on the info button right up here to get the best deal.
Keith Urban did a pretty cool version of this song.

I walked into a record store in 1978 with plans to buy an album (the name of which I have long since forgotten). They were playing Alive on Arrival, Steve's first album, over the store's speakers. I walked around the store, listening to the whole album. In the end I walked out with Steve's album, instead of the one I had intended to buy. That started me on a going-on 45 year, and counting, love affair with Steve's music. I've seen him live a number of times, and he still puts on a fantastic show. Big City Cat never disappoints!

What a great memory that you brought back! I met Steve in 1981 on my 21st birthday. My friends and in snuck into his concert at a local college. Somehow I managed to get a kiss from Steve for my birthday. What a great guy and a sweet song.

I'm from Meridian, Steve's hometown. One of my favorite song's of his is called "Goin down to Laurel" which is south of Meridian. It's a chicken town and it does stink! Here's part of the lyrics "Well I'm goin' down to Laurel It's a dirty stinkin' town yeah But me I know exactly what I'm going to find Little girl I'm goin' to see She is a fool for lovin' me But she's in love and love's a funny state of mind" Great tune.

Thanks for this interview. Steve Forbert has been a long time favorite of mine. I still listen to the Jack Rabbit Slim and Arrive on Arrival CDs. Make It All So Real is still one of my all time favorite songs. I have over the years introduced a lot of people to this great song writer and story teller. It's interesting how his voice is still the same after all these years.

Steve Forbert is from my hometown of Meridian, Mississippi. I've seen him around town once or twice, and I have friends who know him. The opinion is unanimous: he's one of the nicest guys you could possibly meet, and a right talented musician and singer. Romeo's Tune is ridiculously catchy. Once it pops in your head you can't get it out. You don't mind, because it's one of those songs that just makes you smile.

I have always thought Steve was one of the great songwriters, and the record companies did the world a huge injustice by not releasing more of his songs as singles. Heard Romeo’s Tune on the radio and loved it, but when my sister’s former fiancé introduced me to Alive On Arrival, well, I was hooked. My two favorite lyrics: It's often said that life is strange, oh yes But compared to what? I lost my watch a week ago And still can't find the time To buy myself a new one like that old timepiece of mind So the next time you see Steve, tell him Dan Johnson said “Hi!”

Seen him countless times here on the east coast - he’s still bringin it every night and deserves more recognition for an incredible career - he also invented Americana - before there was an Americana and deserves recognition for that as well! ✌️❤️

In the early 80s at the height of his fame (fleeting as it was) My friend Joanne and I went to the Ritz in New York City to see a show and who ended up in front of us but Steve himself… Turned around and danced the night away with both of us .. I don’t think we exchanged a word with him… our dancing did our talking and we just had such a thrill that night!! 2 of my favorite albums .. those first two of his!! just an amazing artist!! Thanks, Brother!!!❤️❤️❤️(Well you’re smart enough to realize I’m old enough to be your grandmother so I’m not really in love with you ha ha ha but I love you like a grandson OK how’s that!🤣🤣🤣)

What a great interview...Bringing the story behind the story brings fascination to a time gone and not yet forgotten. Gosh, just love listening to you in your face-to-face encounters with the artists. GREAT 'Active Listening' skills and artists willing to be forthcoming with their WIZARD movements and mechanics behind the curtain. To some extent, Steve is correct that some motions of the 'Muse' remain a secret in his art. Then again, it's sometimes interesting to gain greater emphasis on the motivation in genius of creation as it can be anything, anywhere, anytime. LOVE THE INTERVIEWS.

It’s good to know a purveyor of real Southern Rock is still making music. I’m from L.A., but I always liked the genre. And we DID play Romeo’s Tune at both my first AM station in ‘79, and at the FM owned by the same company. It stayed in one rotation or another for several years (and the “oldies” rotation (we defined good songs that weren’t on the present charts anymore as oldies) - and the song was in that rotation for a couple of years, just because we liked it.

This is a great song, and a great interview with Steve Forbert about the song. I remember this tune came out when I was about ten, which was around the time I was sent off to boarding school in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, which is on the Gulf Coast. When I started working on my debut sci-fi novel (due out this August!) I listened a lot to 'Romeo's Tune' among others (Black Oak Arkansas, Marshall Tucker Band) as inspiration to help me recall the emotions I was going through during that era, and Forbert's stuff from that period was among the biggest musical influences on the characters in the story. So, thanks for posting this interview - Steve Forbert was a great songwriter who accomplished a lot more than just this one song.

Hey Adam, I love your channel. As an international viewer its always mind blowing to see what US listeners consider 'one hit wonders' or in your case 'lightning in a bottle' In this video I got lightning in the brain with the 3 examples of OHW's 1) FYC - had a number of international hits EG: Johnny come home, Blue, Ever fallen in love, good thing, I'm not satisfied etc 2) Mr. Mister - Kyrie, Is it love and Broken wings were all hits, 2 went to number 1 in the US and they were Grammy nominated 3) Terrence Trent D'Arby - Sign your name, Dance little sister, If you let me stay and She kissed me where all big singles and he won a Grammy PS: Best rock era debut - Supertramp - Supertramp (I hope prog rock is included)

The professor is right that the Folk rock/singer songwriters were almost completely gone by 1980, but this pleasant little tune about a sweet love made it through and became a radio staple for years. I always had a soft spot for it, partly because it was one song that I had a problem singing along with, in my car. I mean I could sing along with a group like Aha, but Steve Forbert's changing range and syncopation has eluded me, but got my respect. The greatest debut Rock album debut (meaning, first ever release) of 1980 was Loverboy.

romeo's tune is one of the greatest songs of the 70's & any era really, up there with any of the great songs from rod stewart & ronnie wood, that lead guitar on steve's song is incredibly passionate & came from the hands of a nashville session cat named jon goin & bobby ogdin on keys played on elvis presley sessions, along with muscle shoals soul players on bass & drums. one night when i was dj'ing in maryland a really cute waitress working tables in the joint came up & requested that song but i didn't have it in the stacks of 45s & always wished it had been there & i could have played it for her & made her shift that night just a little bit better. it's totally magical & one of those things that you can never hear enough times. talk about lightning in a bottle, this song is a whole thunderstorm with a light show & starburst fireworks in your eyes & in your heart. it's hopeful & bittersweet, aching, yearning & a comfort all at the same time, in loving love is free

Always liked Steve Forbert. Unfortunately for him, he was given "the New Dylan" label, which seems to be a curse. The only person to ever really successfully "beat the curse" was Springsteen. Nice job on documenting an unsung folk-rock hero, and a heck of a good songwriter in his own right. By the way, @ProfessorofRock, have you ever considered doing a piece on Pure Prairie League? The recent episode on the Byrds got me thinking about it... a really competent country-rock band from Ohio, of all unlikely places, with a somewhat unusual story.

This was a huge hit in the NYC area. The DJ's always have us the name of the artist and the song titles. My cousin and I were talking about this Forbert album last night re: back in '92 we were listening to this vinyl LP every other song. It's so catchy... then you don't listen to it for five years, then you listen to it several times while going through your old LPs... Great tune. Steve was a really good songwriter. Glad he got his due in his hometown.

I saw Steve Forbert live years ago. There was a coffee shop in town where both local artists and established artists performed live. One day my then-fiancee (it's a long story, so don't ask) were having dinner out when Mark, the guy who booked shows at the coffee house, came by our table and dropped two tickets for the night's show, Steve Forbert. We had never heard of him, but we thought, "A free show is a free show," so we went and it was a great show.
