Band Was SO WORRIED They’d TURN into HAS BEENS- They Wrote A Song About it…Hit #1!-Professor of Rock

Ойын-сауық

Coming up, Eagles were the most popular band in the world when they released the landmark 70s album Hotel California... It became a #1 hit and made them even bigger with 2 huge hits, the title track and New Kid In Town… Don Henley and Glenn Frey and company were on fire... the irony here is that this #1 song was the band singing about getting replaced by an up and coming artist and becoming forgotten. Next one of the legendary songwriters behind New Kid In Town, JD Souther who co-wrote 3 of the Eagles' #1 hits, tells us the anxiety and pressure the band had trying to maintain their top-of-the-charts status and we’ll find out if they remained on top or faded away… on Professor of Rock.

It’s time for another edition of our series Revelations. Where artists and bands take us for a deep dive into their greatest songs and albums. Details about the recordings that you won’t find ANYWHERE else and that’s a fact.
Today’s story is very interesting and speaks to artists in general. This band had forged its way to the top of the charts through the early part of the 70s to become arguably the most popular band in America. Right there with Zeppelin and Floyd and likely crossed over to a wider demographic than either band I’m of course talking about Eagles. Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and co were coming off 2 straight #1 albums… One of these Nights from 1975 had 3 top 5 hits with Take It to the Limit, Lyin Eyes, and the title track which hit #1 on the Hot 100. Then in 1976, they released their first greatest hits album which would hit #1 and go on to become the biggest-selling record in American history with almost 40 million copies sold in the US. That year they were working on their next album which felt like it might be their best yet. With a promising theme and song Hotel California they were poised for another big one but as most artists who think too much… they had some anxiety about the fleeting fickle nature of fame in the music business as Don Henley would later remember. they felt the pressure of staying on top with some of the up-and-comers. The Rookies who were nipping at their heels trying to take over… They put this worry into a song that would hit #1. I’m talking about the classic 70s hit New Kid in Town.
Actually, it was JD Souther who initially wrote the chorus for the song… The band thought it sounded great… They felt it could be a hit… actually, the song sat for about a year. Later Don Henley, Glenn Frey and JD got together during the Hotel California session and finished it. A lot of people have speculated who the new kid in town was… Was the band talking about a specific up-and-comer they were reticent about taking their place on the charts? We’ll find out next from JD who will

Oh, that's perfect! What a sweet memory. When my son was a baby, I could play certain kinds of music that calmed him down when he was fussy. I listened to a PBS station all the time that played World Music. One day, the music of Zamfir was played (Romanian musician, known as "Master of the Pan flute") and he instantly stopped crying and became serene. I'd never heard of Zamfir before, but I bought some of his CDs asap! Worked like magic to calm my little guy down. He's 31 and 6'2" now, but he still loves that music

I had no idea who they were. Once we got there and they started playing, it was a series of - oh wow, I know this song... I know this song, too! It was the Eagles. Back in 1976, my first concert. Amazing.

Joe Walsh joined them then Leadon quit and was replaced by Don Felder. Randy quit in the middle of the Hotel California tour so they poached Timothy B. Schmitt from Poco. Ironically, Schmitt had replaced Meisner in Poco when the Eagles poached him from Poco. After that they basically stopped being the Eagles and are just a tribute band now (IMHO).

J.D. Souther's a magnificent songwriter! He may have not written a LOT of Eagle's songs but the ones he did are top-notch. Quality over quantity! If this song was written 100 years and crooned by Rudy Vallée, it still would have been a #1 hit! Okay, let me 'splain... I do this dumb thing in my head where I imagine songs as they would sound if sung by someone very different, and the image popped in my head of Rudy Vallée crooning into one of those old-timey microphones while Ginger and Fred dance elegantly: "...You look in her eyes the music begins to play Hopeless romantics here we go again But after awhile you're lookin' the other way It's those restless hearts that never mend..." It's kinda fun, but I don't really recommend this game of imagining different people or characters singing well known songs. I've ruined myself forever for listening to David Bowie sing "Let's Dance" because in my head I'm hearing Elmer Fudd singing, "Wet's dance! Put on yo wed shoes and dance da bwoooos!" and it still cracks me up.

@@hbofbyu1- I’ve often wondered why Dan Fogelberg was never asked to join The Eagles, since many of the members played or sang on his records. He would’ve definitely made them better - not that they really needed improving, but Fogelberg was a ridiculously talented artist; a multi-instrumentalist who could sing like a canary and one of the best lyricists in rock/pop, IMO. Another great interview w/JD, what a nice guy. The Eagles are complicated, but after the Beach Boys, they're among the defining sounds of SoCal in the '70s. (Then separately, they each became part of the soundtracks to the '80s.) In all fairness, these other amazing musicians (Joel, Springsteen) were around in the '70s themselves, talented and already successful in their own right, I think. Nice to hear about "Uncle Cros'", too. Funny how they didn't know that they were the "new kid in town" until they weren't, and now that they've outlasted all the rest, everyone playing music and rocking together well into their '70s, who cares.🤷‍♀️

You have to respect the brilliant songwriting and arrangement of the Eagles. Who didn’t buy ‘The Best of’ back in the day

Pole Position! I once, and only once, ran the whole course and all bonus courses with NO crashes. I was "in the zone", it was a blast. Thanks for the happy memory!

I just feel so spoiled, growing up in the greatest period of rock music! I couldn’t appreciate it then, but I sure do now!

"New kid" is one of those Eagles Classics that has always fascinated me. I took it literally when I first heard it, but I also prefer trying to include the original writer's attitudes which is why it's important to listen to what JD has to say. I'm also slightly ashamed that I (think I) didn't hear this particular song until I was in my teens. So many other Eagles classics came my way while I was still wearing diapers.

The New Kid In Town is my favorite Eagles song. I relate to that song deeply , not so much as an artist, but when I step into a new place and am loved at first, but when someone else comes along , I feel I'll be forgotten
