Placeholder Song Title Was MEANT To Be a JOKE…UNTIL it Became an 80s Classic! | Professor of Rock

We’re heading back to the Summer of 1985, to immerse ourselves in song so saturated with nostalgia euphoria that you may never want to take it off repeat. Summer of 69 by Bryan Adams. It was an up-tempo rocker and a legitimate rite of passage for every 80s kid. But I have to admit that it doesn’t mean what I thought it did when I was growing up. For years people have debated its message. Bryan Adams wrote it with longtime partner Jim Vallance for his 1984 classic album Reckless. Actually the song title was supposed to be a temporary lyrics meant as a joke… They kept it in though and it became an 80s smash. Does it reference a specific year in history? Or is it simply about getting some summer lovin’? Let’s see… This episode will have you longing for “the best days of your life.” NEXT on they Professor of Rock.

So Adams was still a teenager when he met session musician Jim Vallance at a Vancouver BC record store in 1978. The two had known about each other through the Vancouver music scene. And as luck would have it, Vallance was looking for a singer to record a demo and Adams was looking for a song-writing partner.
The two bonded immediately and the legendary Adams-Vallance collaborative union was formed. Vallance, previously a drummer for the Canadian rock band Prism, already had an impressive track record as a young musician in the area. But Adams wasn’t aware of just how extensive his resume was since Vallance had been composing under the moniker Rodney Higgs.
Said Adams, “I’d done studio work, so I knew about Jim. But he was hiding behind an alias... So I only knew him as a session drummer. My friend introduced me, saying, ‘This is Jim, who wrote such-and-such.’ I went, ‘No, that was Rodney Higgs!” When I realised Jim was the same guy and so twice as talented as I thought, I said, ‘We should definitely write together!’”
Vallance was pleased to be teaming up with Adams as well. And their partnership was one that would last for decades. Though he would also collaborate with artists such as Aerosmith, Glass Tiger, Heart, Tina Turner, and Ozzy Osbourne in years to come, his partnership with Adams was undeniably his best work.
At first Adams figured that he and Vallance would form a duo, two singers, two song-writers. But his new partner wanted nothing to do with the spotlight and was much happier writing songs behind the scenes. So, Adams, who wanted to sing, didn’t push it and the arrangement suited them both just fine. Six years and three albums later, the songwriting duo were on the verge of unprecedented success. Adams’s third album Cuts Like a Knife had cracked the US Top 20 in sales. Singles Straight from the Heart, Cuts Like a Knife, and This Time

I was a sophomore in high school when this album came out. I bought the cassette and was listening to it (on my Walkman) in class one day while getting a head start on the homework when one of the most popular girls in school noticed the case and asked if she could borrow it. That turned into a friendship, nothing more, where we traded all sorts of music back and forth, and we often listened to Bryan Adams together in my car. In our senior year, she was killed in a car accident and after her funeral, I put the Cuts Like A Knife cassette in my car stereo... it just so happened that The Best Was Yet To Come was the song that played, and I totally cried through the whole damned song. I don't honestly think I have cried since. That was over 35 years ago and I still immediately think of her when I hear Bryan Adams.

I saw Bryan Adam's in concert at the Aud in Buffalo in March 1992. When he played this song, it was just him playing the first verse on his guitar.. He didn't sing a word because the audience just instinctively sang. It only got better when he and the band jumped in at "Me and some guys from school." We never stopped singing. It was definitely one of the best days of my life.

I was privileged to see Bryan Adams in an outdoor concert in Park City, UT. He was the warmup for REO Speedwagon, who were great, but I had just bought Reckless, and was happily wearing it out loving Adams sound, and particularly “Summer of 69.” When he performed it, I was sitting on a blanket, on the grass, with my girlfriend, with whom I was fiercely in love, drinking wine out of a Dixie cup, and feeling at that moment that I was living that song. Everything in the universe seemed to collide at that moment. Thank you Bryan Adams for making that moment possible, thank you Professor of Rock for bringing it back, and thank you Lisa, still my dream girl.

Summer of '69 caught me with it's driving energy. The guitar opening is almost savage - it grabs your attention and then the entire song doesn't let you go. The nostalgia is almost heartbreaking. I had just graduated from college, not much was going right, and I really missed the time when life was much quieter, calmer, and less disappointing. Summer of "69 reminded me of those times.

my brother (45) recently passed away. I always thought I would remember him by the Hip's Ahead by a century. But in the middle of singing 'Summer of 69', I had this huge sense of my brother. He lived life to the fullest while he good and before he got MS. And we spent summers at a campground for most of our younger lives. 'Now or never' he lived life like he knew. He was the life of the party and everyone loved him and he made everyone laugh. Every time I hear this song I think of my brother and his nature and smile. Before recent events, I used to just think of my summers at the campground and the fun I had. It has taken on a whole deeper meaning now.

This song can definately be taken at least two different ways, but as you said it had two different writers. Really the words and phrases are strung together giving nods to so many different things that it is whatever you think it is and no one should insist otherwise. I think the writers feel the same. Bryan Adams had so much talent in a very competitive market. You had to be really good to do that during that period of time. If someone with the same talent and types of songs came along today they would rule the airways if the music industry allowed them the leeway.

I know this is about Bryan Adams, but OMG Bruce Springsteen's Thunder Road - I went thru several 8-tracks, casettes and LPs. Never did replace it with a CD for some reason... maybe bcz I had moved on in my life and my interests/focus had changed more to alternative music by then. I also didnt care for Bruce's later music dripping of patriotism/nationalism. It was such an unfortunate turn off for me of an artist I loved in my teen years. I don't mind songs about your country but just not such in your face versions. It was an immediate radio station changer for me. So much more interesting things to write about than imaginary geopolitical boundaries, IMO. Bruce's later music kinda destroyed the innocence and genuine emotional he so ICONICALLY captured in his earlier work. I have trouble separating the 2. Anyway, as for The Summer of 69, it was a fun feel good bittersweet song. You always had to crank up the radio when you heard the intro notes. I never had a Summer of 69. I was on my own struggling to pay heat and rent at 17 years of age. Cradle robbed by an older man, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do to survive. I never had a carefree summer of young adulthood, a summer of love. Dunno if that's good or bad. Somehow tho, I can still relate to this song in a generalised longing kind of way for how we always paint previous eras of our life with a kinder more colourful brush of nostalgia.

I played guitar as a kid, but put it down for reasons, sixth grade era. But I was gifted ability, and was always playing other people's guitars, so I got a nice electric for Christmas 1984. Got intense in the summer of 1985 and this song topped the playlist very early on as a favorite and a crowd pleaser. We had a decent jam room set up in my friend's basement rec-room. There was a bunch of girls from another town that came over to my buddy's house and listened to us jam, and one of them sang this song with me on the mic. Our rec-room run was awesome! Wish I'd known then what I know now. Man, those were the best days of my life!

We said, “well, we’ll work our way towards the gate and listen until he plays something that we don’t like or don’t remember.” We stayed until the last note of the encore! We had no idea what big fans we were of Bryan Adams until then.

I went to high school in the mid80s from our small town with a long daily bus ride. All the buses were equipped with cassette players to keep us entertained. A lot of mixed tapes from the radio played so many times I can still hear them in my head today. For Christmas '84 my sister gave me Scorpions "Love at First Bite" , but before returning to school from break decided to exchange it unopened at the record dealer. "CLaK" album by Adams was popular on the bus so I took a chance at getting the new "Reckless" tape to try to look "cool" enough to play my own music. It definitely worked for me.

It was the summer of ‘85, I would be starting my senior year in the fall, my friend Nadine had already dropped out of high school. One night three of us were doing the small town under age drinking (I know, we were bad back then), Nadine got it into her head that we should hit the bar in the next town over (3 miles) we were insisting that she not drive because she was the drunkest of the three of us, but she wouldn’t listen. Anyhow, all went well for the short commute we were blasting “Summer of ‘69,” until we were turning off the highway, then the red and blue lit up behind us. We were all freaking out but tried to look “normal” as Nadine rolled down the window. The cop stopped her because she didn’t signal when she turned! Reminded Nadine to make sure she signals and left! What a moment I will never forget. 😅

I thought it was pretty awesome even though I was more interested in The Clash, The B-52's, U2, Big Audio Dynamite, OMD and REM. Still I thought Brian Adams was really terrific. I thought the song title "Summer of '69" was more symbolic of a really great year in a young person's life so I never felt the need to change any of the lyrics. I appreciated your showing the differences in interpretation of the title of the song and it's differences in meaning even for Bryan Adams and Jim Vallence and they wrote that song together. Summer of 69 is one of those songs that reminded me that even though I wasted my youth being who I was "supposed" to be, I could always decide to be who I want to be. I've never been happier since. I have to admit I was a cheeseball too. I changed the required lyrics to fit "Summer of '85". The year I graduated high school, playing in a garage band with my friends, dating different girls trying to find love past the attraction aspect and dreaming of the future not realizing I was in the best time of my life. Bought my bass guitar at the Star Pawn Shop. Everett quit, Sammy got married. More lines were changed to fit my situation. Summer of '85 for me. When I got to go to the concert for Reckless I had to sing my version to myself and it fit so well. So many concerts in the early to mid '80s for me and my friends. I wish I had Doc Brown's DeLorean to go back there! After the summer of '85 life got too real. Had to work to find fun and happiness. Oh I miss those days.
