Greatest Female Rock Singer Says This Classic Song was ABSOLUTE HELL to Record! | Professor of Rock

Ойын-сауық

Wow. You’re in for a treat, the greatest female rock singer in history, Ann Wilson takes us through her band, Heart’s greatest Hidden gems including a walk through their peak in the 70s. After Dreamboat Annie, their first album made the global superstars they had a legal battle with their label Mushroom Records when the label released their follow-up album without the band’s approval and unfinished. They fought them and were able to get them to stop production and a judge gave them just 2 days to finish songs, mix, and master theirs. so 2 versions exist. also the story of this legend’s favorite album track and how it devastated her to write it. Coming up next.

In 1975 the band Heart blasted onto the scene with Dreamboat Annie including the classic rock standards Crazy on you and Magic Man. The songs have become a part of the Classic rock lineage, and the album went to the top 10 in the US as well as sold over a million copies. The band had finally made it.
From that point sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson would rip through the late 70s with amazing success on every subsequent album in the 70s including Magazine, Little Queen, and Dog and Butterfly all going multiplatinum. The band would have their share of adversity though including heartbreak, a lawsuit with their label Mushroom records, and a change in direction and faltering sales in the early 80s.
Up next Ann Wilson gives us insight into these albums from Magazine in 77 all the way to their first album released in the 80s Bebe Le Strange. She goes into some of the key songs from each album.

The older I get, the more that I appreciate this band (and especially this pair of songwriters, the sisters Wilson) and consider them equal in the pantheon of all-time greatest Hard Rock acts -- who also had a soft side that they weren't shy or ashamed of showing alongside their full-throttle rockers. While --as my tastes in music evolved and changed-- I did drift away from them in the '80s from the Bad Animals album onwards, I never entirely abandoned them.

The DOG & BUTTERFLY album is special to me because my bro-in-law who was a DJ for private parties and also a disco at the time (his regular gig was being a correctional officer for NYS prisons) got promotional records usually, but this particular album he bought outright. I loved hanging with him whenever I went over to my sister's & his house because I learned so much from him. When I saw the album, I asked "Heart?" He asked me did I know who they were, to which I replied I knew the songs "Magic Man" and "Barracuda"; he told me, "Listen to this...!" as he put the album on one of his turntables. The song "Straight On" started playing, and my sister yelled enthusiastically downstairs from the kitchen, "Who's that?!?" He yelled back, "Heart!" She said, "Get outta here?!?" She and her friend came downstairs to the basement, she carrying their youngest son in her arms and her oldest son ran downstairs after them. We all danced our butts off hearing this new, unexpected, funky sound from this record, from this group! What a great time! My sister exclaimed, "GO 'HEAD, HEART, WITH YOUR BAD SELF!"

They had some friends over sitting on the couch in the family room. They said they were in a band and asked me if I had heard of them. I said no. They laughed at me. Then asked me if I wanted to party with them and Nancy said..."she is too young, she is a child" one of the guys said: "N0 she isn't, she is old enough". Then Nancy asked how old I was and I said 11. And then they got more formal and parental. They asked me some more questions to be polite and laughed at my answers. My friend and I left. I had just met Heart.

Got the chance to see them in the early 90’s. Awesome show. One of the top shows i’ve ever seen. They came out and the crowd went wild everybody was up on their feet standing on their chairs rocking out. Security got everyone back in their seat by the end of the first song. Then nancy went into a long intro on crazy on you, the crowd lost it again. Security gave up after that. They played an amazing set. There tribute to Led zeppelin at the Kennedy center. I used to wake up every morning during my Sophomore year to Highjinx instead of an alarm clock and would sit in front of my stereo trying to figure out the chords to all my favorite Heart songs on my guitar. Ann & Nancy allowed me to dream about being a girl in a rock band, but never acted on it. Instead, I joined the Marine Corps. I did however win first place in my high school talent show when I got a little group together and we played Straight On. I still play Heart songs nearly every time I pick up my guitar and keep myself and my friends entertained. Great memories! Oh my precious God! Of course Ann and Nancy are the ass-kickers of Rock…but this interview brought back memories I’ve had confined deep within the recesses of my mind. I met Ann backstage in Houston Texas in 1978 and it was and remains the culmination of my life. She was so genuinely kind and freaking amazing that I was convinced we were meant to be but alas that minute passed as she proceeded to the stage. Yes, Ann Wilson and of course Linda Ronstadt my life’s love 💕. Thank you Professor for sharing.

I remember when they finally hit it big. I was in college, as I recall. Those songs from back then are some of their best. I saw them in concert, and it was great! Ann has SUCH A VOICE. She blew me away with her amazing vocals. Crazy On You. Barracuda. Magic Man. Alone. These Dreams. What About Love. Ann is my favorite female rock vocalist (Steve Perry is my favorite male rock vocalist). They both share things in common, like powerhouse vocalists who make it sound so effortless to hit those notes and sustain them. Who have so much nuance to their voices. Who I love to listen to whenever I hear one of their group’s songs. Their vocal range. And so on. It takes a special voice for me to consider an artist my favorite, and though there are a lot of great ones, Ann tops all of the women for me. She’s in my top ten favorite female vocalists period for sure.

There's a lot of female rock singers out there now but no one will ever come close to Ann, I have all of Heart's vinyl, I was outside today working on my tractor while my dog was chasing a squirrel, that's his favorite thing to do, I installed a new stereo inside the cab of the tractor and the first thing I did was put a Heart CD in. The 70's was such a magical time for music and an era that was so laid back. Now days it's hurry up everything.

PS Sylvan Song is also so beautiful! I still love the mandolin. As a hillbilly it was nice to hear it played in a different genre. Sometime in 1973 a friend asked me if I wanted to join a small group he was getting together to go see a local Seattle band that he claimed performed awesome Led Zeppelin covers. I said, sure, I'll come along so we all rode up Hwy 99 to a place called the Aquarius Tavern, now Parker's Casino. That was the first time I saw Heart. I was mesmerized by Ann and Nancy's vocals in harmony as well as Ann's beautiful tone and extremely powerful delivery on her solo numbers. We all left wondering why isn't this band nationally recognized and playing large halls and stadiums. And that was the last time I was ever able to see them in such an unassuming venue.

Heart is one my all time time fav groups ever. I remember the first time hearing Magic Man and Crazy on you in 1976 and became an immediate fan. I was 16 years old then and Ann and Nancy were instantly became my idols. I still play Dreamboat Annie at least once a year. I had a few of their albums (I own no more vinyl) and CDs and Dreamboat Annie is still my fav. When their songs first came on the radio, they soared. I can't think of anybody who had a mediocre or negative opinion of this solid band from the start. They should have been inducted in HOF far sooner than what they were and before many others.

Thanks, Adam, for this video. My husband was a huge fan of Heart since before he met me in the late 80s, so he got me hooked on all the old albums. My favorite album is Dog & Butterfly 🐕 🦋 because of the different songs and the way they make me feel. But it's by far, not the only album that I love. I spent my senior year taking aerobics instead of PE class, and my teacher, Mrs Lathrop, worked our butts off to Heart's self titled album. I get sore muscles just thinking of some of those songs and the leg exercises we did. 🤣 I'm pretty certain she was a big fan of Heart, too, because we worked out to Heart at least twice a week, sometimes more.

I bought it for the hits, and then got into the album as a whole so much that I was blown away to get every Heart album after that. The combination of Cry to Me and Go On Cry is probably the most powerful sequence in any Heart album I have listened to. One thing I haven't found in any form other than listening to it on the radio is the all guitar opener for Crazy on You being played in front of Dreamboat Annie on the single, which extended the track to about 3 minutes. I have never owned a copy of that and would love to.
