Guitarist INTERRUPTED Singer & Wife During SEX to Write Song…Became an 80s SMASH!-Professor of Rock

Ойын-сауық

Coming up, we’re giving you a rare inside look at one of the most power-packed partnerships of the rock era. Two mighty musicians at the top of their game went on a massive decade-long run… Eddie Van Halen and Sammy Hagar… Van Halen kicked out four straight chart-topping records and 17 Top 10 rock singles. in just 9 years. For this episode we’re zeroing in on one of those tracks: the 1988 classic hit Finish What Ya Started. We’re telling the hilarious story behind its after-hours writing session. I actually got this one straight from this band’s legendary frontman the Red Rocker himself Sammy Hagar. And it’s really one of the funniest songwriting stories you’re ever going to hear. This famous guitarist interrupted his singer in the middle of an intimate night with his wife to write this song… and that’s what he wrote the song about.. the story is NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. For today’s installment, we’re honoring one of my favorite rock voices ever, along with one of the most insanely talented guitarists of all time. By themselves, these two musicians were undeniably brilliant. But when you put them together in one of rock’s most iconic bands, they were absolutely superhuman. The duo? I’m talking about Eddie Van Halen and Sammy Hagar. This once-upon-a-time combo set the world on fire back in the day. And you can still smell the smoke decades later.
In addition to paying tribute to these two rock giants, we’re also covering what has become something of an underrated Van Halen song… but one that was very popular in its day with a hilarious story attached to it. The song is Finish What Ya Started from 1988’s OU812. For some reason, this one has fallen out of the public periphery. But I think it's the perfect illustration of these two incredible musicians clicking together and a very unique sound and groove to it. So let’s to it.
Since their self-titled debut album scored #19 on the Billboard 200 in ’78, Van Halen was on a steady march to the top of the US Albums Chart. 1979’s Van Halen II and 1980’s Women and Children First both hit #6, then Fair Warning #5 in ’81, Diver Down #3 in ’82, and finally 1984 reached #2 in well, 1984. That last one was held out of the top spot by Michael Jackson’s freight train Thriller. Incidentally, Eddie collaborated with Jackson on the album’s single Beat It, writing and performing the guitar solo… so maybe he gets partial credit? We’ve of course talked about what happened with Van Halen after 1984 multiple times, so there’s no need to go into detail.
But as the David Lee Roth era came to an end, the boys of Van Halen started searching for a new lead singer. Enter former Montrose frontman and high speeding solo

Michael Anthony provides the perfect harmonies, both for DLR and Sammy Hagar. In my opinion, he's largely responsible for their distinct vocal sound. One doesn't normally think of them for their vocals, but nobody else sounds like them.

Saw Eddie and Wolfgang in Chicago on the reunion tour. David Lee said something about Wolf's weight and Wolf jumped from a higher level and landed to hit the first bass notes from "Running With the Devil." His Dad smiles and jumped right in. It was a great intro.

I did as well. Late summer 82. We took a leak out back next to a dumpster at Gazzarri's! No bs. But I met many other 60s 70s and 80s artists...music and otherwise as well as athletes. I had move there from NC with my bandmates that spring and I landed a job at Henson Recording studios. The being in a big time rock band didnt work out for me but I remained an audio "engineer" until 1997, all be it the last 11 were back home in NC.

I was a newlywed when OU812 came out and I was in love with the entire album immediately. My husband was a few years older, so I kind of expected some complaining about DLR not being part of the band, but was pleasantly surprised that he loved it as much as I did. The DLR years were great - no argument - yet, I much preferred it when Sammy and Eddie were playing together. It seemed to bring all 4 of them up to another level of Rock.

Most of a guitarist's sound, and people sound differently, like how Eric Clapton doesn't sound like BB King, and Stevie Ray Vaughan doesn't sound like George Harrison...comes down to their hands. Even with all the effects pedals and amp extras that we have to choose from, just that left hand on fretboard is a huge part of the sound, and if you have someone who doesn't use a pick, it's even more noticable. That's why no matter what guitar he was on, or what his rig was, Eddie always sounded like Eddie.

Play a new song and let callers vote on rather it will be a smash or is totally trash. "Finish What Ya Started" got TOTALLY TRASHED! Callers kept saying "this ain't Van Halen's sound". This country flavored guitar playing. I myself, after hearing the song, kind of did not like it. But after listening to it for a few weeks, I started to appreciate it. The FACT it was so different, kind of endeared me to it. Thank you Professor for talking about this song, band. Keep up the great work.

I think I was spoiled because I was in High School when Dave was the lead singer. It was like a bad break up when your girlfriend 😢 leaves you. I can’t stand Sammy and I wish I did because the rest of the band are just the best musicians out there!!! I don’t hate anyone that likes Sammy because a lot of VH vans still liked my favorite 🤩 band. I saw VH twice in the early Roth days and in 2007 on Dave’s birthday 🎂 which is the same day as my wife. It was a stellar concert in Cleveland at The Q with Wolf 🐺. I only like one Van Hagar song and that is “Humans Beings” from the movie “Twister “ 🌪️. I love ❤️ your program Professor!!! You’re very entertaining and I do love ❤️ your style !!! Keep up the amazing content!!!

What a great historical review of the time Sammy was part of VH …Valuing this great material which he and ED put together. Really refreshing to hear someone valuing both eras and trying to unite Van Halen fans together in order to preserve Edward’s incredible legacy…Unlike some of these ‘Roth vs Hagar’ sites on Facebook and You Tube which have gone absolutely bonkers trying to attack the Sammy era recently….Ed himself wouldn’t have wanted these factions raging against each other and Wolfgang has spoken about how crazy it is to dismiss a whole era of VH and get insulting about it…..The thing I remember about OU812 when it first came out was how VARIED the material was…..The Atomic Clock tight Rhythm of Finish What Ya Started,,,The choir like beauty of When it’s Love,,,,The velocity drive Synth of Mine all Mine,,,,the sheer sleazy boogie of Black and Blue,,,The visual picture landscape painting of Cabo Wabo,,with Ed and Sammy firing on all cylinders….And whatever the band politics with management changes, the music remains brilliant.

I was 17 in 1988, and of course I bought OU812. Some buddies and I were playing basketball at open gym, and I had Finish What Ya Started blasting on a boom box. My Boomer dad - also the basketball coach - walked in, heard Sammy screaming “babybabybabybabaaaaaay,” and yelled, “WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO?!?” It’s Van Halen, man! LOL! I knew if it made my dad holler in protest, it had to be good.

Based on the principle of the conservation of energy, I also believe the connection of the energy we are made from doesn't end when we die. Sammy and Eddie - and their energy - will be forever connected. That's my take on it.

Sammy joining Van Halen sure represented the fact as a fan of the band that we most surely can indeed have and enjoy the Best Of Both Worlds peace everyone!

I'm not a big "single favorite" guy, but I was a little kid growing up in the 80's. My first real introduction to Van Halen was the album 1984, and I was instantly hooked. However, years later, when Sammy joined them, something about Sammy's voice, the way he and Eddie collaborated and the lyrics and rhythms came together, just resonated with me. When 5150 came out, I couldn't wait to save up the money to buy that tape! I wore that thing out listening to it on my way to school. If you had asked me at the time, I probably would have said 5150 was my favorite Van Halen album of all time... then OU812 came out. And it was like Van Halen just couldn't lose! I loved OU812 even more! It was sort of the anthem of my adolescence. To this day, whenever I hear 'When It's Love', 'Feels So Good' or 'Finish What You Started', no matter the day I'm having, it just puts me in a good mood!

"Finish What You Started" is my VH fave. At the time that came out, that sort of clean, finger picking Merle Travis/Chet Atkins sound had kind of been lost to history. So it was pretty earthshaking for a major and fairly heavy band to my tastes bring that back was very cool. The guitar sounds so simple, but in fact, speaking as a guitarist of 35 years, to do it and do it right, you really need to at the top of your game and really in the zone. Most guitarists wait for those moments, but Eddie lived there. I'm certainly not a big VH fan...I'll listen to them, but I don't believe I have any of their albums...if I do, it would be OU812. From sort of a nostalgic point, if anyone remembers the advent of the rather short lived cassette single...I had that track on one of those. Those would play 5 or 10 times and go bad. I may still have that tape with the little wrap around cardboard case somewhere.
