Famous Band’s #1 Song DIVIDED Fans SO MUCH a Fan PUNCHED the Singer in the Face! | Professor of Rock
Face punches, stolen demo tapes, a controversial sound, and well, a Drummer arrested for stealing a car on his way to the video shoot? All of this happened to the Cult when recoding their 80s hard rock classic She Sells Sanctuary… It’s the preeminent song from Singer Ian Asturbry and Guitarist Billy Duffy...an all-out rocker that launched the band into the international spotlight. Only the thing is, most of us in the US weren’t paying much attention at the time. This song was also so out of step with this band’s musical roots, that it enraged former fans and inspired some serious fist-to-face violence… Get the story of how today’s band fought back and established themselves as an iconic act for the ages so Iconic that both New Wave kids and Metal heads loved them… NEXT on the Professor of Rock.

Make sure to, subscribe below right now. I know you’ll dig this channel. We also have a patreon you'll want to check out. There you’ll find an additional catalog of exclusive content and you can even become an honorary producer to help us curate this music history.
I’m excited to return to another one of my favorite shows that we do on this channel. It’s called Breakthrough. In this show we break down songs, albums, or events that kicked open the door to an artist or band’s career and gave them the momentum to rocket to long-term success. On previous episodes we have covered Boys Don’t Cry by The Cure, Nobody’s Fool by Cinderella, and Silent Lucidity by Queensryche.
Today we are telling the story of a band that was beloved by all cliques in school Whether the metal guys or the wavers or the punks… It’s The Cult and their breakout classic, She Sells Sanctuary, from their 1985 sophomore LP ‘Love’. Seriously, outside of only a few bands like the Cars, everyone loved the Cult. It didn’t matter if you were into metal or new wave or punk or rock or pop everybody appreciated this band… So let’s get into it.
Back in 1981, frontman Ian Astbury founded the post-punk, goth rock outfit ‘Southern Death Cult’ in Bradford, England. For the band’s name, he drew inspiration from an old term for a mound-building Native American society in the Southeast US. In his formative years, Ian had lived in Ontario, Canada, and became an avid student of Native American culture. It was a theme that he would routinely incorporate into his songwriting. Southern Death Cult released their first single, “Moya" in December 1982 and went on tour with Bauhaus the following month.
Despite a promising future, Astbury grew frustrated with the press’s coverage of the band, which pegged them as “positive punk.” So Ian disbanded the Southern Death Cult in 1983. Dropping the word “Southern” from their name, Ian formed the ‘Death Cult’ with ex-Theatre of Pain guitarist Billy Duffy, bassist Jamie Stewart, and drummer Ray Mondo. Death Cult released an eponymous EP in the summer of 1983. Later that year, Mondo was replaced by Nigel Preston, who had played with Duffy in Theatre of Hate…

"She Sells Sanctuary" was one of those songs that you could not dismiss! From start to finish it is flawless in it's execution. One of the best Rock songs ever.
I used to work at a concert venue. The Cult were frequent guests, always a good time. I was standing by the backstage door when Billy Duffy walks up, rolls his eyes, and said it was time for him to go out to the meet and greet where the fans tell him how great he is. I told him it must be nice, people who come to see the band I'm in yell at us and tell us we suck. He was taken aback a little, when I told him the first song we play is called "(Band Name) Sucks," which consists of a chant saying "(Band Name) Sucks," which we then follow with the hit song. Billy laughed, and went out to have a good time with the fans.

My story for the track She Sells Sanctuary is about a wonderful lady named Athena. Promoter, hostess, and a tall Greek goddess much like her name. I met her at René's infamous Halloween party one year because I was the only one who recognized her costume of Missing Person's Dale Bozzio. It didn't take too long before she became my best friend. Even though she was 20-years up on me, when we would talk on the phone every night she reminded me of a teenager the way she sounded when she would go on about the new crush she had at least once a month! She gave me my first weekly residence spinning at her club in San Francisco called Sanctuary back in 1997. My career took off from there largely due to her taking a chance on me. She taught me so much about life, business, and never lost her sense of humor. She was loved in our scene and probably through other ones I didn't even know about. She even was a surrogate mother for a couple who couldn't conceive and somehow kept it under wraps with loose clothing and a pinky swear of silence up until the eighth month when she had to temporarily close the club. When she passed away, all of the DJs who worked for her gathered at the club she had bought this time and barely got to enjoy herself only a year or so and stood arm on arm in remembrance of her and the club we all started at Sanctuary as I played The Cult's She Sells Sanctuary at her club one last time. It's hard not to get teary-eyed and think of her when I hear this song to this day. Thank you so much for the memories, the laughs, and the lessons dear Athena, you are still missed every day by many most especially me.

The Cult is one of my favorite bands! I think it was in ‘86 that I saw them open for Billy Idol and they’re performance outshined the headliner by no small degree. Sometime in the 90s, I was in my friends Jeep with a couple other friends, listening to Love Removal Machine and a Harley pulled up next to us. It was Ian Astbury! We started chanting “Cult, Cult, Cult!” and Ian just tipped his hat and smiled…🖖🏼

They were one of the best bands I've ever seen live, full of passion and fire. And needless to say, they were so much better than Billy Idol!! He has always seemed like a gimmick to me, and I only went to the show (in Seattle) because I wanted to see them. Also, cool story about seeing Ian.
I got into the Cult in 1986 -- the radio was playing them on the alternative stations. "She Sells Sanctuary" & "Love Removal Machine" were MY JAMS. & the heads that turn STILL make my back burn... Hope you can get that interview with Ian!

Thank you for this one! "She sells sanctuary" is an all-time favorite of mine. It is a classic among many musical genres; alternative, pop, rock, metal... They are a great band that's deserving of much recognition.
Wow! What a crazy story! This was fantastic! Getting the wrong STEVE, GETTING PUNCHED IN THE FACE, DRUMMER NOT SHOWING UP FOR VIDEO SHOOT, and the story keeps going on! I had no idea. I remember THAT video. The pirate suit! 😅😂😊! It was different! His foot work was different too! Great music, great singing. Still together. Impressive. ❤
I've been a drummer for over 50 year now (Yes, I'm old) I started out with lessons, and then high school big band, then jazz band. But when I hit University, I got a few gigs in a country band. But then I got into my first rock band. We ended up doing Fire Woman and She Sells Sanctuary.. Oh, screw the country band stuff. I had so much fun playing those songs I never looked back.
@MsThebeMoon

My cousin who was a drummer for as long if not longer than you, disliked playing drums for country music more than anything. The more complex the drumming the more he liked it as in Rock and Jazz.
Love this band. Electric was my first introduction to them; then I immediately bought Love, which was even better. Then one day I found Dreamtime at a mall record store in suburban Ohio. It quickly became my all-time favorite album by any band-the double album with the live performance included. Wild, melodic, mystical. Pure magic.
For me The Cult's Love album is literally one of the best rock albums of all time. To me it's as endearing as AC/DC's Back In Black. Every song is solid front to back. Truly an underrated album that stands the test of time. My only gripe is It does sound a bit tinny/flat - it would be great if they remaster the album with a better mix.

Shhhhhhushhh! Don’t mess up a good thing!!
This came out in the UK roughly the same time as Love Like Blood by Killing Joke, so I can't think of one without the other. Sadly, I didn't really get into the Cult's album unlike KJ's Night Time, which is superb. That being said, the 12" version of She Sells Sanctuary is still overall one of my favourites with the Howling Mix getting a regular airing. I also like the electro mix on the b-side, but not as much. It was a great crossover record for me into the New Romantic/synth stuff that I was (and still am) listening to...
This is a band I know nothing about. Never listened to their music. Had no idea they were ever a big deal. However after watching this story about them, I'll check out more of their old work. Thanks as always Professor.
Saw the Cult open for Billy Idol in ‘86 in Chicago. I want to say that Matt Sorum played drums that night. Really tight show. I became a Cult fan that night. Also saw Ian perform w/ “The Doors of the 21st Century” in LA at Unv. Amp in 2001 featuring the remaining Doors members. It wasn’t Jim but still pretty cool. A friend I met at Second City improv in LA and I went. We had lower balcony seats but snuck down to main floor and made it to around 6th row. Suddenly, seeing how much people were into it, Ray Manzarek motioned for a couple of fans to come on stage but the entire first 8 rows started rushing the stage and I got a bit trampled. At 5’5”, I went down to the floor while people were stepping on my back. Out of nowhere, a large arm comes down and scoops me up and brings me to safety. It was my buddy who’s 6’2”, 215lbs. He basically acted like a cow catcher, clearing away people so he could get to me. I was actually fine. No serious harm, no foul. One of the best shows ever!
"Wildflower" and "Love Removal Machine" are personal favorites from The Cult. I remember driving home from my first year in college for the Christmas holiday and blowing the West Texas dust of my dashboard with Billy Duffy's thunderclap guitar riffs. 'Electric' was on heavy rotation in my collection. It felt like it bridged the gulf between AC/DC's crunchy guitar rock and The Doors' dreamy psychedelia. In retrospect, they were ahead of the curve by about a decade, doing 90's Alt Rock in the 80's, perhaps even pioneering it. The Cult were accessable enough for old school rockers to latch on to and trippy enough for the Goths and burnouts to dig on as well. (The Bubblegum Pop teen girls and R&B/Dance fans weren't on this particular bandwagon, at least not at my high school).

I'll disagree. Not one of the greatest songs of the 80s; one of the greatest songs ever. Rock n roll the way it's meant to be. And one of the best intros of all time.
Only Ian Astbury could have gotten away with that get up! Man, The Cult's catalogue is filled with so many notable riffs.
With all the great songs before and after, to this day, almost 40 years later, Sanctuary is still my favorite song ever. One of the few albums where I've liked every single song too.
The beginning to She Sells Sanctuary is unique. Such a great song. I remember going on the bus into town with someone who was intent on buying the album soon after its release. It was at lunchtime but still involved bending the rules by leaving site ( sheltered eighties existence alert). Definitely one of the most interesting bands of the eighties. Billy Duffy went on to work with the legendary and almost saint like Mike Peters in Coloursound. Never really dug their music but it formed part of the storied career of both artists.

I had returned to the US in 1986 and watched MTV all the time as a 17-year old. The Cult "Love" album is still one of my favorites and probably would have never known about it unless I saw the video on MTV. Great story. That was awesome.
Just got tickets to see the Cult in Italy this July 1st (Canada Day). For a Canadian living abroad, this is going to be one heck of a Canada Day! They are one of my all time favorite bands, the top band I have never seen, and She Sells Sanctuary is my all time favorite song. What a band!
Adam, you are EXACTLY right about how all types could love this song. Now, I'm as much a Wham or Depeche or Duran fan as I am a Motley or Van Halen fan, like you, but back then especially, there were certain groups of music-liking types. But this song truly transcended. I remember 15 of us renting a passenger van, and driving to Vancouver to see them live. And I think all 15 of us slept (stayed) in the same hotel room. Good times! Maybe the majority of the folks had no idea who this band was. Either way, it sucks.
Same in my school. The Cult had broad crossover appeal accross music families. Cool to all. Best thing about this song is that someone had the supurb idea to make extended remixes for longer enjoyment. It is a perfect song that i give thanks to GOD for the talent granted to The Cult. NICO is a slower song but also a song that I leave on repeat indefinitely. Its off the record Beyond Good & Evil. So many heart-stirring songs with these guys!
She Sells Sanctuary is an incredible song. It’s hard to imagine any Rock fan not enjoying it. I turn the volume all the way up whenever I listen to this gem. I appreciate your anecdote about being grounded for waiting till the end of the MTV video to discover the band’s name. It reminded me of the time as a young boy I first heard on the radio Stevie Wonder’s song Superstition. I absolutely HAD to have the recording. I earnestly implored my reluctant mother to purchase the album “Talking Book.” It was, and remains, a favorite album. As an aside, I had the good fortune in the 70’s and 80’s to have attended both a middle school and high school that had a juke box in the cafeteria. Can’t tell you how much I relished that experience which, I believe, may be singular. In my travels I’ve not encountered anyone who also had that musical luxury. I’ll never forget hearing Frampton’s Do You Feel Like We Do? for the first time on that jukebox. I was blown away by the talk box effect. It was a single edit because of the .45 format, but still wonderful.
I remember walking into a Christmas party in 1985 at Terre Callan’s house and he was blasting the first song on the album, Nirvana and then heard She Sells Sanctuary and I lost my mind! They’ve been my favorite band since! Years ago I was fortunate enough to play a street festival in Dallas at a place called Trees and the headlining band was the Holy Barbarians! Got to meet Ian for the first time. I’ve seen The Cult at least 20 times! They got me through some rough times in California and Oklahoma! Long live The Cult!!! Thank you again Adam! 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
Got mad Love for this song, band and album, what a delight! I had a feeling that Adam was gonna feature the Cult soon, and sure enough he did! Thanks so much! Hunch came true!
the first time i heard the cult , it was like being visited by an angel . i was in a very dark place, sleeping in my car, bathing in a lake , making a couple of bucks here and there picking up hitchikers during morning rush hours for gas money (mostly guys that had DWIs trying to keep their jobs and get to work ). i had enough to buy a few $1 drafts at a local bar . a tall slender woman in a leather jacket slid down the bar a couple of seats and struck up a conversation . we went to her apartment . she put on LOVE then Sonic Temple . that was my first night in a bed in a few weeks . she GAVE me the cassettes because she had the CDs .eventually i got the help i needed to get my life back on track . i lost track of her after that . i am grateful to have known her . some people are a blessing to the people around them . the cult reminds me of those days in the late 80s , my journey back from darkness , and of course of her .
I am now a loyal fan professor! The cult has so been one of my favorite bands and has so many memories... but they remain even today a bit of a CULT BAND. Thank you! thank you! for this great memory! The cult was a victim of the times. They hit their stride just as everyone was dividing into their boxes. They never got the play time they deserved. I never heard of them until i befriended a Gothic pretty boy. He became my best friend, and he introduced me to a lot of music i missed. I intro'd it to my biker buddies, my hard rock friends, my country buddies, even my Mormon friends.. they became MANDATORY LISTENING for all genres. (Don't tell the mormons sanctuary is about sex) ... Picture this though.. Every Easter my biker friends would gather in the desert in Utah, with the biggest bonfire they could make and the biggest speakers they could for into the one truck. When the cult came on.. it was a scene. 30-40 drunk white kids all Dancing and jumping in our sanctuary... like an Indian drum ceremony. It was funny, and religious for us all. Great memories. I can't thank you enough
Mr. Professor, I am a new subscriber. I can’t thank you enough for this video and history. The Cult has been my favorite band since I heard Sanctuary in Jan. of 1986. I too was blown away. January is my birthday month and a friend gave me a tape of Love. I still thank him profusely at least once a year. I saw them live one year ago (tomorrow-May 7) for the (I think) 24th time. I lost track a while ago .. lol. They absolutely killed it that night. We are probably about the same age. I was born in 1971. I heard you say that you grew up in Idaho. Not sure if you’re still there but I live right next door in Utah. Although I was born and raised in southern Minnesota. So, from a new fan, thank you very much for a very enjoyable history lesson. Thomas 🤘🤙
I have loved the cult side the first time I saw the video on MTV. It's criminal they didn't become more popular in the U.S. thanks for spotlighting them!
Best story ever. "Adam! You get up here and clean your room!" LOL, everybody here can relate.
I first heard of The Cult from their song Fire Woman. I feel in love the band instantly. I actually snuck out of my house as a teenager and went to go see The Cult, Bonham, and Dangerous Toys when they played in Birmingham, Alabama in 1989. This was my first concert. By the way my parents found out and I got in a HEAP of trouble. It is a fond memory of my teenage years and at 50 I am still a huge fan. Long live The Cult. Professor thank you for this episode.
Ah, the 80’s. Your stories totally take me back to growing up in that decade. Love this song. One of my all-time favorites from that decade.
Here in L.A., we were all over the Cult from the start. It was so much fun to be in the cutting edge of music here at that time. One of the best eras to start a music journalism career. Late ‘60s L.A. and late 80s Seattle were also great. But mid 80s L.A. was my time.
Feel like the old man saying I had to walk to school and home in the snow, uphill both ways...MUSIC meant EVERYTHING back then.
My all-time favourite road-trip song with buddies. This is the tune I would always crank as we headed out of town for a baseball tourney or a July 4th lazy river party in Apple River, Wisconsin from our northern Ontario hub. Fantastic memories and still get jacked when I hear this come on.
Saw The Cult Oct. 92 in SF and again a month later at a radios station appreciation event (Live105), both shows were fantastic. Could listen to “Love” daily and regularly do. Love this song but favorite is Love. Great band!
I love that the Cult wasn't defined in any catogary.....for me I seem to gravitate twards bands like this and can hear them everywhere....the Cult is a great band so thanks for covering them Professor❤
Wow! Adam this was by far one of my favorite videos on your channel to date. I don’t remember when I first heard she sells sanctuary but I do recall that I liked it. I think love removal machine was really good too. I was fortunate enough to finally see the Cult live in Cleveland Ohio when they played at the house of blues. I got some good pictures and I was really excited when they finally played she sells sanctuary because that was the reason I wanted to see them live. Let me tell you that I was not disappointed at all. Oh my goodness that was so amazing hearing it live and how great they sounded that night. One concert I will never forget. Thank you so much my friend. 😊❤
Probably my favorite guitar opening to any song ever, and that TONE is a huge reason why. Billy Duffy is awesome.
Iconic for sure and as usual thanks for your retrospective commentary videos.
Love this song! Can't wait for the interview!
I remember walking down Broadway in Bflo NY as a teenager and as I was passing the Broadway Market there was a local radio station doing trivia out of their van. I answered a question correctly and got to pick a cassette tape. Well, I didn't recognize any of the bands but thought The Cult She Sells Sanctuary cover looked cool so I took it and it blew me away, it's one of my favorite bands to this day!
One of my very favorite bands from that era. What really made me appreciate Ian, was when I saw him fronting the doors as Jim Morrison. He nailed it! One of my favorite songs!

@@ProfessorofRock Wow, you are welcome! As someone who grew up in those formative years without a father, I appreciate those stories by proxy. Since I have a fleeting line to the Professor… Can you cover some alt/indie bands who’ve made an impact? Sonic Youth, Ramones, Superchunk, Misfits, Beefheart, Archers of Loaf, etc? 🙏🏼
Rolling stone magazine called this “THE BEST COLLEGE SONG OF ALL TIME”. I remember reading this in college and having the article pinned in my dorm. Everyone loved this song. Every college party went sonic when this song came on. People stopped what they were doing and engaged in a dance frenzy….
Thank you for this! I love the Cult! I feel they are underrated, to be sure.
I came in contact with The Cult around 2000 when they released their Best of Album "Pure Cult" it even had a second CD with a live concert... amazing. While I loved all the classics and got me deeper into listening to more Cult, I loved the "The Witch" which was produced just for this album, as far as I know. What a song!!!
I can see "She Sells Sanctuary" making it to #11 in Canada since I remember it being on was on regular rotation on MuchMusic in 1985. Fantastic song!
Nice musical memory Professor! That’s why we listen!🤘🔥

THanks Brent! I appreciate it!
Saw them live in a small venue with about 2000 people circa 1995. One of the best concerts ever slam dancing everywhere. I kept thinking to myself why is this concert not being held in like a 20,000 seat arena. Phenomenal
Great band, great video. You've done it again Adam.
Living in a backward town, my ahead of the curve musical tastes were often considered suspect. I listened to the Cult, and told my friends that they would be a huge hit someday,…..within months the radio started playing She Sells Sanctuary and the same people who criticized my love for the Cult,…….couldn’t wait to tell me about this new band they had discovered. They were huge here in Canada. Great band.
I have been a fan since the Southern Death Cult years got a ton of trash talk from kids for liking them, then the Electric album came out. The trash talk ended. Funny how that happens. By the way, Love is a timeless album. I can throw that on and automatically get transformed back to those amazing days growing up. Thank you for covering them!
Good stories! Thanks for the shots😎👍
I used drive friend around in High School and to this day people say this is the song that reminds them of me driving them around back in those days. Even my DJ buddy plays it on the radio with a shoutout to me from time to time as he remembers this song in those high school days so well! (Around 1994) I remember buying the cassette, then later buying the CD with the live version, extended version, and some remixes! The Cult has so many creat songs, and single CDs with great bonus tracks, but nothing tops the original She Sells Sanctuary!
The first time I heard The Cult was back in 1987. My cousin bought the tape, Electric, and from there they ended up being one of my all-time favorite bands. Back in '87 all the skaters had Electric in my town. I ended up getting Love, soon after, then Sonic Temple, and of course, Ceremony. I finally got to see them in 2018. Great show!! and Billy Duffy kicks butt on guitar!
Billy was in Theatre of Hate, not Theatre of Pain. And what school did you attend where everyone liked The Cult? Growing up in the mid to late 80s, I was one of a couple of people in school that liked them.
Professor, thanks for the video! Don't recall having heard music from the Cult until today.

You'll love them!
First time hearing them was their SNL performance in '85, where they split the musical guest billing with Dream Academy. That was a pretty cool night!
Ian Astbury owes you an interview considering your two week grounding. Brilliant story.
The Cult bring back happy memories for me from the 1980's. I loved the Cult, and when i saw them live, they were even better than i thought they'd be.
I had a mental health client once who only liked about 5 songs, including this one. We had a wonderful day blasting it about 50 times in a row, both agreeing we’d never get sick of it. RIP Steve, I still love it.
Saw them recently and they still sounded great. Caught a Billy Duffy guitar pick too!
Sweet soul sister was the first song I fall in love with the cult my brother bought the sonic temple album and as you said, it simply blew my mind, I don't remember exactly when it was, but I'm sure it was in the 80s, until today the cult is one of my favorite bands, easily in my top 20 bands, thanks for bring those memories back
Haha love your childhood story, that's one of my favorites! Paid the ultimate price 😂

I posted the KZread music video for this song on my Facebook page--it got the most likes of anything I've ever posted (even more than my birthday lol)! Was living in Hawai'i when this came out. I don't remember it ever getting any airplay, but it was on all the time at the clubs. Ran out to buy the CD at Tower Records near Ala Moana the day after first hearing it, what an incredible song!
Great story mate Thanx for sharing
Absolutely outstanding album. I revisited this album back in 2020 at the start of the pandemic. Must have listened to it about 30 times while working from home. She Sells Sanctuary started my day for a few months
When I watch the video for She Sells Sanctuary, I see a group of guys who absolutely love being in a rock band.
I love The Cult. They were a band that cemented my love of pure Rock. Love Removal Machine is probably my favorite, but I enjoy She Sells Sanctuary. However...for me...the most mystical, otherworldly song from the 80s...is probably "The Killing Moon" by Echo & The Bunnymen. It had such a haunting quality to it. I remember listening to that late at night, in bed, with my headphones on, so as not to disturb my older brothers, and gazing out the window at the moon-lit backyard. And this song always made that backyard seem vastly different than it did during the day, as if the only thing missing were waves of fog and faded tombstone here or there. Love how songs feed the imagination! Thanks for covering The Cult! They are not played as often as they should be, in my humble opinion.

Has the Professor ever covered The Killing Moon? I love this song too.
As a lifetime fan of The Cult, it's refreshing to see a review of them that's actually accurate, so kudos for that. I first heard Sanctuary on 99.1 WHFS in Washington DC in the Spring of 1985. The Station had played their earlier indie hit Spiritwalker from time to time, so I had heard of the band before, but Sanctuary was a big step forward. I remember seeing them perform the song on Saturday Night Live in December 1985 in a double bill with The Dream Academy. I was definitely interested, but it wasn't until their 1987 album Electric that I was truly hooked. I was a big Billy Idol fan and saw The Cult open for him twice that year. They were a sensational live band, and Idol & Co. had a hard time matching their energy and swagger. Sonic Temple was the soundtrack to my senior year of high school, and they have been my favorite band ever since. I've seen them over 30 times from coast to coast, been lucky enough to meet them a few times, and am so thankful for the impact they've had on my life.
