I'll nominate Michael Jackson's Thriller and Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA.

I was blasting hysteria on a drive through my neighborhood last week, and at a stop light, a guy crossing the street heard the song and did a little break out dance move with some head bangs and air drums. Certain songs just have lasting appeal. So many of Def Leopard’s songs have such great hooks, they are universally appealing, and will always be loved! ❤

I can't listen to any Def Leppard song without a feeling of nostalgia and happiness coming over me. Listened to that music during some of the best years of my life 👨‍🎤❤️

Agreed. High N Dry, Pyromania and Hysteria were the soundtracks of my youth.

I was 16 when this album came out. Went to see them in concert with Tesla as their opener. Sugar was at its height when I saw them and when they played that song, the place just blew up! Man never will forget that! You hit the nail on the head by saying it was the gen x st pepper! To this day its it my most favorite album.

If you've not listened to def leppard prior to pyromania or hysteria you're missing out. Songs like let it go or high n dry,lady strange,rock brigade, bringing on a heartbreak...rockin 🤘🤘

After having to re-buy many of my favorite cassettes due to this issue or that I went back to albums only and just taped anything I wanted in my car. What we went thru back in the day to have our tunes 🤪

“Bringing on the Heartbreak” is my favorite Def Leppard song. Unfortunately I was listening to it the morning I found out a classmate in High school had taken his life. Not a close friend but it was my the first time I had experienced the confusion of such a senseless loss. This song took on a different meaning after that day. Still takes me back to those emotions on that day listening to it even today. I think of it every time I hear of someone passing away by their own hands. The lyrics have nothing to do with this subject but the opening melody is emotional.

Wow I hadn't really thought about the fact that Hysteria had 7 big singles on it. That's crazy compared to today's standards. The live Sugar video is one of the 4 or 5 quintessential videos of that era. Absolutely iconic.

Hysteria is a stunning song for the ages. The whole album still sounds terrific today and is a timeless classic.

Having been hooked by Pyromania in school, picking up Hysteria was a no-brainer. Over 30 years later, Def Leppard is still my favourite band of all time.

Pyromania is one of my top five favorite albums of all time. I was immensely disappointed by Hysteria. They switched from "metal band" to "pop band", and lost everything that I loved about them.

It's my favorite band, too. Once I saw the North American "Sugar" video on MTV, I was hooked good.

One of the great things about your channel is the memories it brings back of my teenage and early adult years. Remember how Def Leppard ruled MTV then, also seeing them in concert on the Hysteria tour, they had the cirular stage in the center of the floor and it was a small arena, no bad seats, it was great!

If you're into Def Leppard, listen to their debut album, "On Through the Night." It is _wildly_ different from the rest of their music, but it's pretty damn awesome in its own right.

The era when Def Leppard was a heavy metal band. Love that album. The guitar solos they used to do...holy schnikes! "Overture" is such an underrated and overlooked metal classic. Then the era of Def Leppard: the rock band, began with High 'n' Dry.

I remember when this song was on the FM radio rotation every day. My dad was driving us miles on the road to my grandparents house and us four kids crammed in the back seat. The 1980's also had big family cars that can fit a family of 6 easily. We were all singing Pour Some Sugar On Me blasted as high as the dial could get. My mom and dad also loved the song. What memories.

There was a lot of intergenerational cultural cross pollination in OUR household, too! We shared musical likes in both directions. We liked some of their music, and they liked some of ours. Gave my mom a Def Leppard cassette for Mother's Day when she was 54, and she played it regularly. She also liked Queen, Styx, Journey, and others, as she shared my love of dense harmonies -- and DAD got ME into Eric Clapton!

Every Def Leppard album was monumental to me, so yes Hysteria was, but so were the others. They still are. There's no other like Def Leppard. Their songs mark very special moments in my life.

I remember my brother getting this album in 1987 and Pour Some Sugar on Me was instantly one of my favorites on the album. My parents found out about my brother buying it and of course went on the "devil worshippers" talk and how it was terrible. I can really only place it in that year because my sister hadn't been born yet (just over a month later she came along) and it was just my brother and I getting that talk at night riding in the car. It's my brother's fault I got into hard rock and heavy metal. :D

Totally the best album, got lucky and saw them on the original Hysteria tour, 40 years later took my wife to see them on the anniversary tour and it was like a Time Machine took me right back to my early 20’s.

Def Leppard killed it when this album was released and I remember hearing "Pour Some Sugar on Me" early on one of our local album rock stations. after the DJ played the whole album he then encored "PSSOM" and from then on it was a nightly staple on that station, maybe for the next 10 years. I love the story of how they "built" this song piece by piece into one of the greatest rock anthems in history. Also the story about Rick Allen. His accident and how his bandmates stood by him during his recovery, then his amazing comeback as a one armed drummer is one of the greatest rock and roll stories we have ever heard, because it ended in triumph instead of tragedy!

1987,88, and 89 I was living in Waikiki. I was driving a pedicab- a 3 wheeled rickshaw if you will. It had tuck and roll upholstery and a kickass stereo. I was young, muscular and in shape and when this song came on, I would boot it down Kalekawa Avenue, song blaring, even flipping the bike up on two wheels! They changed the girls every two weeks(!) and this song got me laid like no other! Thank you Def Leppard!

It just doesn't get much better. 35 years later it is still making me sing along... fortunately in the car where I can't be heard!😉

I worked for the Lep’s record/distribution company in the 90s. I had the distinct pleasure of being in a Gentlemans club across the river from St. Louis one night with Sav and a Mercury Records promo guy. It was quite an experience to see the recognition of who was there ripple through the crowd. It was all over when Pour Some Sugar was played by the DJ. Can you say…Girls Girls Girls. When I’m asked daddy, what did you do in the war I often leave this story out, but it is extremely memorable ❤️.

Hysteria as a whole is a masterpiece gem. Pop/glam metal perfection, not a single weak track, and a must for the late 80's party.

This song RULED the summer of 88!! From the first listen when it came out in 87, Pour and Hysteria stood out front and center on one baggin album. Never got tired of it and still love it. Mutt reused those backing vocals in 1991 on Bryan Adams' Waking Up the Neighbors which sold 17 million copies.

I was at McNickoles arena when they were recording that video. I remember they had to play Pour Some Sugar On Me three different times during the show to get the footage they wanted. Every time they played it the crowd was more hyped than the time before! It was recorded over two nights for the home video Live In The Round concert. I never did see myself in the video because I was pretty far back 😂 but I was there and it was awesome!!🤘

My favorite group, This album kicked-ass begining to the end. I wore out two cassettes in my car, and played it loud. Loved those days.

This was probably my most memorable concert. It was the first time we had seen laser lights like that, or a 360degree stage. It was the greatest thing I had ever seen at 19 years old. And still is to this day.

This album had me at “Animal” in ‘87 when I first heard it on the radio. Ran right out and got it. Saw the “Hysteria” concert at the University of Illinois Assembly Hall. Spectacular! I feel like this album was to them what “Escape” was to Journey or “Moving Pictures” was to Rush. It brought in millions of new fans and made them legendary. Every song on each of those albums was special. Always interesting to hear the random influences that made these masterpieces. Thank you Professor!

I discovered Def Leppard listening to Pyromania. After the video for Photograph came out, I was hooked! And I still am! Decades later, they are still my favorite band! I have always loved the loyalty to keep Rick Allen. He had to relearn to play drums and it’s amazing that they stuck by him! True friendship and loyalty! ❤️

Fun connection between Def Leppard and U2 (re: your shirt): Bono and Adam were hitch-hiking during the Joshua Tree tour, when they got a ride from a guy who was blasting Def Leppard's PSSOM. They loved it. That was the start of a change in sound for U2, which ultimately became Achtung Baby.

So my funny story is that I LOVE this song and Def Leppard. Saw then in concert at the Forum in LA. Then, years later when I had my kids, I used to play 80’s music for them whenever we drove in the car. My son, who was about 4 at the time, LOVED the song and used to say “Mom play the BOMB BA BA BOMB SONG AGAIN!” And would sing along to oh. It was so cute he was so young and even though the song has risqué lyrics, kids don’t understand them. When he was MUCH older and he figured it out we both laughed at this memory.

Yes!!! 1988 will always be my favorite year of my life and Def Leppard’s Hysteria was a big part of that

Fascinating backstory Professor! You always provide details that are new to me. It's amazing how this one song was inspired by parts of so many other bands' hits. The Hysteria tour was the first time I saw anyone perform in the ROUND, making every seat in the arena closer to the stage. Pour Some Sugar On Me got everyone fired up and singing along. I was not a hard rock/metal chick, but I bought a copy of Hysteria, and loved it! Their songs from that album got a lot of play on Much Music here in Canada. And Sugar was one of my favourite tracks.

I'll always appreciate Hysteria because that tour allowed me to see Queensryche open. At the time very few people even knew who they were, but I was a HUGE fan and Queensryche were touring for Operation Mindcrime. It was incredible. Later Queensryche would blow up and I'd see them again headlining their Empire tour with Suicidal Tendencies opening. A guy by the name of Robert Trujillio on bass at the time. I even casually ran into Rocky George at the side of the stage for that one. Another great gig.

This was absolutely my monumental album when I was 13-14. This became my workout music while training for football. It is still my favorite album. Heck, I even still have the original cassette that I bought.

The backstories on huge songs like this are so cool to see. They did play it a lot but I never got sick of it. To this day I have never not listened to it when it came on the radio. ❤

It feels fresh!

I have been a fan of Def Leppard since the High and Dry album. I have seen them live multiple times. When they came to town doing live in the round. I was so excited I got tickets to go. Then I found out I was 4 months pregnant. Talk to my doctor about going to the show pregnant. Would it harm the baby. He thought about it. I told him I was going to that show no matter what. I did, and my 30 year old son loves Def Leppard as much as I do.

I can recall hearing High & Dry (Saturday Night) and being blown away. From there I was a fan for all of Def Leppard's music.

I remember when the album came out and Animal caught my attention. I rushed out and bought the album (on cassette tape). When I heard Pour Some Sugar, the album got played non-stop. I know I contributed to 4 of millions of albums sales it made. I burned up the 1st cassette playing it so much. Wound up buying 3 more, 1 for work, 1 for home, and one for in the car going to and from work. I got to see the band play in the Spectrum in Philadelphia. Great times.

This.whole.album !!! Just 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 I saw them 3 times that year in different states. They were/are so tight! & you said it, background vocals are like another instrument!!! Great class today, Prof!

What did they play?

This song restored my faith in rock and roll. I was an 80s teen and we had the best music. In the late 80s, I was a young adult working hard and music started to change. I was frustrated listening to the radio. And then I heard Pour Some Sugar On Me. Bam! Rock and roll was back. I had liked Def Leppard in high school but now I loved them. Def Leppard and Journey are my two bands. Thank you for the great video.

Sugar was also played in the dance clubs (not strip clubs) in the 80s. I was a rock guy in the 80s but went to those clubs with some female friends and was surprised to hear them playing Def Leppard.

"Pour Some Sugar On Me" is truly one of Def Leppard's best songs-It may be 35 years old but it still sounds great.

Saw them March 30th '93 in St. Louis. 5th row. My ears rang for 3 days. A friend had their first album in '80 when the drummer, Rick Allen, was only 15 years old at the time of the recording.

It always fascinates me how some of these hit songs come together! Thanks Professor! Great video!

I definitely remember the long wait for the album to come out. I have a hard time choosing between Pyromania and Hysteria as my favorite Def Leppard album. They're so different, but so good. I sure was surprised that Women didn't do better on the charts. I loved that song. Another great episode!

They wanted to retain Rick Allen, and I’m so glad they did.

I love Def Leppard. Mad respect for keeping the drummer. Pyromania was gold for me. I was in 10th grade for it. I loved the album. Hysteria was worth it. The whole album was awesome. Armageddon it, Love Bites and Sugar were awesome. Sugar could not wait for the next album. Love is like a bomb. I’m glad Mutt heard it. It never said sex but it definitely was about sex.

I was there at McNichols when Def Leppard came to town! Memories are amazing. McNichols didn’t even last those memories-it was demolished in January, 2000. What history!!

Lots of great songs off this album. Rick Allen himself said his favorite song is Hysteria. Sometimes people forget that back in this era, there was an amazing number of artists pumping out hits. It made it that much harder to get a number 1 smash hit with all the competition. "Love Bites" was actually their only number one hit off this album. I still think that "Pour some sugar on me", "Hysteria" and "Armaggedon It" should have been number one's too, great songs for sure. Also, "Gods of War" was never released as a single, but it should have, an awesome song as well.

Mutt was a Beast in the studio. A dreaded taskmaster because he takes forever to produce anything I remember reading how Joe Elliott along with the band often spoke about quitting because it was too unbearable. 3yrs to produce this vinyl. Would make anyone feel like that. But! What a great outcome!

This was the peak of hair metal. All us kids were amazed when the drummer came out with one arm.

To this day, when I find a "kid" that knows drums I love to play him Pour Some Sugar... Animal, or other song from that album, and only after he's amazed at how good the drums are, I show him the video and say "And he did it with only one arm". So far, they all become fans!

I'm not dissin' his inspiring decision to keep rocking, but let's keep this in realistic perspective. He is physically incapable of playing stuff like Dave Grohl, Dave Lombardo or Stuart Copeland.

@@petegregory517 I acknowledge the technical accomplishment and I am glad he can continue to play and inspire others with special needs. I'm not a monster. I'm just saying that those hurdles were accomplished for the goal of (at the end of the day) continuing to make millions of $ playing fluff glam rock for 15 year old girls. Just saying.

The second you said "Step inside" I knew which song you were doing, lol! I love it! In the early 90's, I got to see Heart and Def Leppard at SPAC (Saratoga Performing Arts Center in NY). We sat on the lawn and got drunk and had a fantastic time!! One of the best nights ever! Still, to this day, it's one of my favorite albums and one of the few that I like every single track on it. When we learned of the drummers accident, my friends and siblings and I were all heart broken. Even my dad, who was the one who got us into all music, was bummed. Then Hysteria came out and we were like "YES!" It was most triumphant! I wore out several tapes, but not to worry, because dad made sure we had the album, lol! I miss my dad and he'd love the hell out of your channel, just like I do!

I have never been to Karaoke without someone doing "Pour Some Sugar On Me"!

Great video! Very informative. As a singer in both a Def Leppard tribute band, as well as an 80's Hard Rock tribute who also cover this song, I can honestly say that no matter how many times we play this song, the audience simply goes nuts over it. There's just something about this song that really gets the blood pumping.

I remember getting the album and tape, when I played the album in my apartment the girls downstairs asked to borrow it because it was sold out in the store. On Friday night they repeated Sugar for at least 3 hours while they got ready to go out. I tried to find another copy so I could give a copy to my downstairs friends, they where great they even did my laundry for me for a few months. We looked from Dubuque, La Crosse, Rochester, Milwaukee and all over in between it would always be sold out, finally found it when I worked in Michigan a week a small town pamida had the album. I heard that song for months on repeat on Friday and Saturday nights. I had a CD of it and one of my daughters took that years ago. It was a great album. That song and album sure brings up some great memories.

You are quickly becoming one of my most listened to KZread channels. Outstanding work!

Love from France ! This was pretty much the soundtrack of my visit to the USA, on heavy rotation on MTV that summer (sandwiched between Jane Wiedlin's Rush Hour and DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince's Parents just don't understand). I'm still keeping the Hysteria tape I bought then as a memento of my trip. What a time to be alive !

I saw the Pointer Sisters at the Rex in 1985, it was an awesome experience, I first saw them at 12 years old fell infatuated for years. I was with 3 other guys working in France and we made the news when they caught us sleeping in hammocks about 20 feet up in the trees in a park. I was young and happily met so many awesome nice people. I did get swore at some but most people where nice.

I loved Sugar when it came out, but at 30 years old I wasn't exactly their demographic. Fast forward to my son who at age 14 had discovered Def Leppard. I came home from work and he was blasting it...rattling the pictures on the walls. He apologised and turned down the volume. I walked over to the stereo and cranked it back up. Some songs, like Sugar had to be loud to be truly appreciated. Just discovered your channel and am having a blast. Thanks for these great memories.

One of my favorite bands growing up. Had all their albums on loop- would lay on my bed with eyes closed and visualize me as lead singer... so cool to hear the stories behind the scenes. awesome.

I had never been a huge fan of hard rock/metal music in the 80's. I was obviously aware of Pyromania in Grade school because most of the kids in my class were into metal. However, all that changed for me especially with this single. After this song was released I went out and immediately bought Hysteria. I actually went back and bought Pyromania as well. It's amazing how one song can change a persons perspective. Faith & Hysteria would be my 2 go to albums for all of 1988. Strangely enough they would finish 1 & 2 respectively as the top albums of '88 according to Billboard. Such great music memories, thanks for bringing them back.

John Cougar Mellencamp, ‘Uh-Huh’ 1983. John took middle America and spilled it's guts in an album that rocked much harder than it's deep seated country origins. Loved the album and to this day Pink Houses is till my favorite song ever.

I love fun songs, you know the ones you can't sing along without putting a smile on your face. This one is at the top of the fun song list.

Loved the whole album. Was able to see them in concert on this tour in Billings, MT. Tesla was the opening act, was down on the floor for the show was deaf for three days after that. It was glorious! Coming of age in the era of Hair Metal was a blessing.

It’s impossible to overstate what a hit-making, album-moving machine Def Leppard was in the 80s. If the only albums they ever released were Pyromania and Hysteria, they’d still be legendary.

I just bough Hysteria on cd for my car. The old cassette has no player in my VW Lupo. 😂 Had to smile when you said you played it back then for 6 weeks solid. I've been playing it solid since June. ❤

I was in the Army and stationed in Panama from 1987 -1991 and “Sugar” was in the jukebox at the snack bar on Fort Davis. I played it a lot, but now hearing the story about the song makes it a better memory. I’m a boomer, and have a wide eclectic taste in music, and Def Leppard was a favorite of the 80’s.

No question that this was a landmark album for rock in the 80's, and PSSOM absolutely took over the airwaves that year. Legendary!

Hysteria is one of the best albums of the 80’s hands down. And the recording is unbelievable.

There were elements here that didn’t correspond with my memories until I checked further. This song was released in the UK and Ireland about eight months before it was in the US (I’m Irish). I think it was the first song released from the album and it was an instant hit (in the (UK). I didn’t realise it was such a slow burner over there.

It’s really not a surprise to hear you say that Casey Kasem is one of your heroes - for as long as I’ve seen you do this show, I have heard you do your own version of Kasem’s style… you certainly didn’t bother to hide it. Cheers!

I remember going out and buying the CD when it came out. I remember liking the album a lot but was sad that it was not a big hit. I think Animal was the first release. It did not do much. I then remember happily the album finally blew up and went as big as Pyromania. They deserved it. They had had a rough couple of years.

I remember buying the CD when it came out. Then I realized that I was in the photo in the liner notes. I went back and bought the LP for the larger photo. Great concert before the incredible album!

As someone who was in high school in the 80's (C/O '84), your channel just brings me back when you go deep into these songs. Thanks for what you do; it is truly amazing!

I was in the Army in Korea in 1988. The two most popular albums there were Hysteria and Appetite For Destruction. Memorable music for a memorable time.

In 1988 I think I bought Hysteria at least 5 times. Tapes kept getting stolen or ruined in my player. CDs got scratched. One of the best albums of the 80s for sure.

Def Leppard truly has some amazing history. Truly one of the defining acts when it comes to British rock and metal. I think Hysteria is an already legendary album, but this classic elevated it to a level it would not have otherwise seen.

This paired with Pyromania are Def Leppard’s high points.

I never cared much for this song but ABSOLUTELY loved this album and Def Leppard is and was everything to me. I saw them live more times than I can count.

Def Leppard is a great touring band! I’ve seen them 3 times! I miss Steve Clark but Vivian was a great replacement! They are definitely LEGENDARY!

Def Leppard. An incredibly under-rated band in many domains.

I'd always misinterpreted lyrics in this song in a way that made no sense, but I still loved to sing along. "Living like a lover with a red iphone." "Devil is your woman, can I be your man?" "Sometime, anytime, sure can be sweet." It took me decades before I actually understood him to say "One lump, or two?" I had never really understood him. Def Leppard was one of those bands that drew the girls in, and this video really put cut-up jeans into the fashion spotlight of popularity.

You are correct, this is the greatest hard rock album of the 80's, it's not that close when comparing all the tracks to everything else. Pour Some Sugar on Me is the crown jewel on this album, and probably the greatest rock stadium anthem of the decade. Great video.

Could maybe be a whole series on 11th-hour additions. This, Everybody Wants to Rule the World, Carry on Wayward Son... I imagine there are more. Kind of amazing.

Same here Hysteria is the quintessential album of my youth. I listened to it over and over. My now brother-in-law that lived across the road once told me I needed to get a new tape he was tired of hearin it all the time. It is still one that I can listen to non stop over and over. My seven year old just rolls her eyes at me cause she knows if one of those songs comes on everything else stops and the volume goes to 11. My wife even has Sugar set as the alarm on her phone just for me to wake my daughter and me every morning.

In 1987 15 year old me was the only Def Leppard fan among my friends. When Hysteria was released I bought it and loved it from start to finish. Then one Saturday nite we were all hanging out in my basement and I put on Pour Some Sugar on Me. From the instant Joe said "Step inside. Walk this way. You and me baby HEY HEY" my friends all lost their minds on it. That was a good weekend...

I wasn't a huge DL fan when I first heard them. Like you I was a late adopter but as the years have passed they have become one of my favorites from my college years. Finally saw them last summer with Poison, Joan Jett, Motley Crue and Classless Act. Def Leppard was on their game and absolutely rocked the house. We were far from the stage but the energy and power were palpable. It was a night I will never forget, I am glad I went. And, of course, they played Sugar!!!

I remember being in high school and listening to this song and all the other songs from the album. It was inspiring for my young self this and button fly jeans on guys.

Still love Def Lepperd to this day. They send me back to the awesome days of my youth. Sugar is one of my favorites from them.

Even though I was raised on Zeppelin and the Beatles and had lost faith in the new rock, Sugar made me give rock another listen. It was the song that drew me back in.

Hysteria was the first def Leppard album I owned and from the swirling opening chords of women to the gentle closing of love and affection I was taken on a sonic journey filled with stadium sized rockers to thought provoking ballads hysteria is still a fun ride today
