Rookie Rocker DOMINATED the #1 CONCERT in History By SURPASSING The #1 Band Ever!--Professor of Rock

Ойын-сауық

How do you top the greatest band of all time? You can’t… The Beatles are the most popular group in history because of their flawless song craft…songs that have been covered more than any artist or band in history, more than a million times…but there was this one time that a gravelly-voiced madman named Joe Cocker did outdo the greatest band ever and he did it by spazzing out on the biggest stage in rock history… at Woodstock! playing a cover of the Beatles' 1967 hit “With a Little Help from My Friends" After his performance people couldn’t stop talking about his insane performance But clear back when the Beatles wrote this song, Ringo who Was chosen to sing the lead vocal was very concerned about one of the lyrics in the song and he refused to sing it unless the band changed it. It’s one of the most misunderstood songs ever from Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band...… the Vice President of the US hated it. Let’s get into the story next on Professor of Rock.

It’s time for another edition of #1 in Our Hearts. This show honors songs that were so unbelievably great, they absolutely should've been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. But for whatever reason, be it radio play, lack of marketing, label support, or just sheer stupidity, the song came up short. In previous episodes, we have covered Night Moves by Bob Seger, In the Born to be Wild by Steppenwolf, and Riders on the Storm by The Doors. Today we are covering a song that actually did make it to #1 in the UK, but came up a mind-boggling 67 spots short on the Hot 100... It’s Joe Cocker’s rendition of ‘With a Little Help from My Friends.’
"With a Little Help from My Friends" is the second track on the Beatles’ 1967 concept album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The album was loosely envisioned as a performance by the fictional Sgt. Pepper band, as indicated by the opening title track. Flowing into With a Little Help from My Friends, we hear a round of applause and the introduction of Ringo Starr’s alias, Billy Shears, who sings lead.
The song was written by Paul McCartney and John Lennon. McCartney claims ‘With a Little Help From My Friends’ began at Lennon’s house in Weybridge, under the working title ‘Bad Finger Boogie’. Reportedly, it was named after Lennon injured his finger during its composition. The song was based on one of Paul’s ideas. As Lennon later recalled, “Paul had the line about ‘a little help from my friends.’ He had some kind of structure for it, and we wrote it pretty well fifty-fifty from his original idea”.
This was actually one of the last songs the two would sit down and write together in the spirit of true collaboration. As McCartney and Lennon banged away abstractedly at a piano, they sang whatever phrases popped into their heads or what they heard from friends’ conversations in the same room. This process stretched on for hours and was broken up with an assortment of random departures into other songs.
While writing, Lennon contributed the line ‘What do I see when I turn out the light? / I can’t tell you but I know it’s mine.’ Depending on your mood, this could be viewed in a rather juvenile bit of humor perspective or perhaps as a somewhat deeper thought. Although, McCartney remembers giggling when John wrote it. McCartney also managed to insert a drug reference.

The film of Joe Cocker performing, uninterrupted with that gathering storm sky behind him, is a happenstance work of art. It exaggerated his manic movements to a Marvel Comics level. It also is a testament to the film crew AND editors of the entire set of Woodstock stage performances; they don't get enough credit. The upclose footage, panning of interesting visuals, multi-frame screenshots......the Woodstock team set the bar way up high.

Me too! The original version, forgive me for saying this, is one of the Beatles’ lamest songs on one of their lamest albums. But Joe Cocker’s version, migod! The first time I heard it I felt like I was listening to a Black preacher taking off for outer space with his entire congregation, lifting off on waves of pure dynamite soul. The greatest cover of anything ever.

I went through a phase of singing karaoke. Being an alto, I felt more comfortable singing male songs. I remember singing With a Little Help from My Friends at an evening dance during a union conference. I was a little shy, so another girl agreed to sing with me and we really enjoyed it. Afterwards many people thanked us for singing and they seemed to genuinely mean it. It was the first time I had been complimented for singing. I think it was because I wasn't trying to be a soprano for once. I always admired Joe's singing and didn't know he'd died, RIP. And he came from Yorkshire! Hooray!

When the Woodstock album was released in May of 1970, I was very young and less than a year into my radio career. I was blown away by this album. Two songs had a profound impact onto my music loving brain. Besides Soul Sacrifice, by Santana, the Joe Cocker's version of this song was just out of this world. How many artists do you know whose covers were so different than the original. Forget about covers if you make them sound too close to the original. Joe Cocker's interpretation made With A Little Help From My Friends (a tongue twister for this French guy), sound fresh and brand new. Simply impressive. On another note, I am touched pretty much every time you mention the relationship you had with your dad. Mine was far from being as good and deep but he made me discover and love jazz. He was very passionate when talking about the jazz greats he saw in Paris, France. So I totally get it when you mention the good times listening to those great songs with him when you were young. Thanks for sharing them.

I loved it the first time I heard it, and that very rarely is the case with covers.
