HOW 3 Guys Recorded 624 DIFFERENT Voices on This SURPRISE CLASSIC 1975 #1 Hit! | Professor of Rock

Ойын-сауық

Coming up… a 70s classic that had 624 voices that originated from only 3 singers…. I’m Not In Love by 10CC. First of all the song came from an awkward conversation the songwriter had with his wife… she was upset that he didn’t say I love you often enough. He ended up turning that awkward conversation into arguably the greatest anti-love song ever. Then in the middle of the recording sessions, the band had an idea. it involved having a receptionist reciting some of the strangest lyrics ever. and it made this song a bonafide classic. the story of the yacht rock/soft rock classic I’m Not in Love by 10CC. Written by Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart. Later the team of Godley and Creme became award-winning music video directors. the story is next on Professor of Rock.

It’s time for another episode of our series, #1 in Our Hearts where we break down a song that was so exquisite it should have been a #1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
You know... I appreciate all kinds of music… I love those simple songs with a catchy lyric, and a snappy melody, for all their carefree- lighthearted fun. I also love intricate songs, that provoke deep thought, or a sublime cinematic experience in the mind of the listener. Those unique songs create a different kind of stimulation altogether. The more esoteric, and extravagant songs can prove to be too abstract, going right over the heads of a mass-pop audience….
But, there are a few exceptions, where a complex song was crafted with such vividness and emotional resonance, that it transcended conventionalism and became a thrilling surprise hit. “I’m Not in Love” by 10cc is one of the most brilliant examples of how a song created for ‘art’s sake’ can connect with pop culture in a MAJOR way.
The story of “I’m Not in Love”- 10cc’s opulent opus, began in a very unglamorous way, at a common, humdrum dining table in England- back in 1974. Eric Stewart, co-founder & lead vocalist for 10cc, was having breakfast with his wife, Gloria. At that moment, the couple had been married for nine years. During the meal, Gloria turned to her husband and asked him…. ”why don’t you tell me you love me that much anymore?”
Eric pondered Gloria’s question for a moment, and then responded…”If I say that every day, the words will lose their meaning- won’t they?” “No, they won’t,” Gloria said.. and the couple suspended the topic. Eric would reflect back on the conversation with his wife a short time later when he prepared to write a love song to submit to his 3 friends that completed the quartet that called themselves.. 10cc.
10cc was an interesting blend of veteran British musicians that
merged together after stints with a wide variety of 60s British rock bands..

I was in the Navy in 1975 and my high school sweetheart whom I was going to marry sent me a dear John letter. I was crushed and thoroughly heartbroken. I never wanted to have a long term relationship again. I was through with heartbreak. And I absolutely loved this song at the time. Well, my sister hooked me up with a friend of hers back home. I began writing and calling her on the phone, however, I kept telling myself that I would have a relationship with this girl but I would keep it at arm’s length. I didn’t want to get serious. Time passes as I write and call her. This girl really had a sincere liking for me even though we never met in person. I didn’t realize it at the time but I started loving her even before I met her. I kept listening to this song and telling myself that I’m not in love but I could see that the song was was about me. I went back home on leave and was only there with her for about a week before I asked her to marry me. We just celebrated our 47th anniversary. And this song had a HUGE part in that. Great video! It’s put a whole new perspective on the song.

The thing I loved about this song, besides the different sound, was that it was obvious that the singer absolutely is in love the first time you hear it. The "be quiet, big boys don't cry" part fit into that. Crying, or telling someone you love them, falls into the same category.

This song always reminds me of a conversation a group of friends & I with an upper classman. One guy asked the guy who's house we were at why he still had a picture of his ex-girlfriend on his wall & he said it was hiding a nail hole on his wall. Well he went to the bathroom & the same guy got up & looked behind the photo & informed us there was no hole behind it. Later this song came out & several of us were listening to it on the radio & we all remembered that conversation & the no hole on the wall!

How was that not a number 1 hit?! Some number 1 hits are forgettable 5 minutes later while some masterpieces like this song never reach #1, but continue to be played 50 years later. It's a travesty. "I'm Not in Love" became one of my favorite songs from the moment I first heard it. "I keep your pictures upon the wall. It hides a nasty stain that lying there" is one of my lines from a song. The 70s was such a great decade for music. Thanks for your episodes highlighting this music.

10CC… I used to like roller skating to 10CC at the roll arena in mid 70s. My aunt and uncle had a ranch and several horses and cattle. One of their oldest horses was my favorite… I was a small third-grade boy and that old mare was kind and gentle with me when I’d saddle her up and ride. Then one week my aunt had to tell me that horse had to be put down. The mare broke its ankle in a groundhog hole. I went to say goodbye when the vet arrived. I noticed the large syringe that he was going to use to put her asleep… it was a 10 CC and that notation on the syringe body “10 CC” confused me, but after my question was answered, I could never listen to the band 10CC without sadness for that old mare I used to love so much.

Memories - maybe at 15 years old, awkwardly dancing a slow with a friend, holding her close, feeling her warmth and her hands on my shoulders, bending my head down, my nose close to her collar to breathe in her scent. The song was already a few years old, my sister had the single and I knew it by heart - had it in my heart. Thank you Clare, that was quite a moment. Why did it have to end? Final fade out, arms disengaged, bodies separated and awkward, slightly embarrassed thank you. Adolescence is so clumsy. Next up, Three Times a Lady by Lionel Richie. Catherine, would you care to dance with me?

The song was, is, and will remain an incredible breakout and creative song. I was swept up by the music when I first heard it. I somehow knew he was being facetious, but I was going through a tough (puppy love) break-up and chose to feel the song as it was lyrically written. The fact that people this young could write such a creative piece, let alone pull off the impossible with a tiny 3-track, I think he said, says volumes! There is NO DOUBT, there was magic in the air in the seventies musically. So many incredible and inspired young people! I'm proud to have shared the times and music with them... Oh and thank you, Prof of Rock, for bringing this great memory back!

"I'm Not in Love" doesn't fit into any genre, so it's truly timeless. 10cc's output was truly diverse - they had 3 No.1 hits here in the UK - "Rubber Bullets", "I'm Not in Love", and "Dreadlock Holiday, all completely different. I believe "Rubber Bullets was banned for a while on some radio stations who thought it was a political statement about Northern Ireland, but it was just a song - there might be a story for the Professor here!

First time I ever heard this song, it was on an AM station in the 80’s. I didn’t catch the name of the song, or group. I had no clue who sang it, but its haunting lyrics were embedded in my brain for years. I didn’t hear it again until maybe 1999/2000 when it was playing in a McDonald’s. Desperate to know what the name of the song and artist was, I went up to a complete stranger (probably in his early 40’s) and asked him, “Excuse me, do you have any idea what the name of this song is?” Without hesitation, he said, “It’s called I’m Not in Love, by 10CC” Can’t tell you how relieved I was finally knowing what the song was that drove me crazy, for years, not knowing the name of it. Every time I hear it now, I think of that complete stranger in McDonald’s that was kind enough to tell me the information I so desperately needed

Once again, Professor, you've changed my mind about a song 😊. I hated I'm Not In Love for most of my life up until a few years ago. I had completely misunderstood the intent of the lyrics and I took them literally. I assumed it was a real narcissistic jerk who was letting someone down harshly. I seriously dismissed it as a kid and that idea was cemented in my brain. I finally re-listened to it when Guardians of the Galaxy came out and realized I was probably coming to the wrong conclusion about the lyrics 😏. I'm glad to see that I'd finally gotten it right. I also had no idea about the music. Your presentation here now means I'm about to pop in the headphones and take a deep dive on this song 🎶 😊.

"Amospheric" is a great way to describe it. "Ethereal" is the vibe I would give it. You won't hear this today. Artists rarely experiment with sound and technique. It's too bad. I remember waking up and hearing this song. It captured the mood i was in with it's eerie sound. I was laying in bed feeling horrible. Then the unforgettable part of "be quiet, big boys don't cry" came on and i just burst out crying but at the same time trying to be a big boy and not cry. That song has stuck with me ever since. This song is a masterpiece. There is a video on the youtube, where they, the musicians of the band 10 CC, show all the process they had to endure to create this great song. I was watching an interview with musician and producer Trevor Horn, and he said that every time they are in a studio recording, they encounter problems most of the time, which makes the musicians quit the song, give up, due to difficulties in recording their song. Then Trevor calls the people, then he plays I'm Not In Love, and he explains to the musicians how that song was created. They realize that their problem is nothing, if 10 CC created that song, they immediately consider their need to go back into the studio, with the understanding that they could fix their problems and finish recording their song. 10 CC made the impossible, and created this song which I love very much and I never get tired of hearing. If it means less youtuber burnout, I'm ok with the odd repeat 👍

Adam, this is the episode that got me to subscribe to your channel. This song is unique to say the least. When I was in the 7th grade, 3 years after the song came out, it was still the song that you wanted playing if you were with a girl at a party or a dance. This song takes me back to that time period. I find it haunting - I actually have trouble listening to it today because it hits my core, reminding me of a time period that I’ll never see again. I don’t experience this with any other song. Great song. Great episode. Keep up the good work my friend.

It brings me back to when I was 5 years old when this came out. I remember stuff when I was 2, so yeah, at 5 I was very much aware. I listened to the radio all the time when riding in the car with my mom, dad, aunt, grandpa and they always had KHJ or some other AM radio pop station or even FM in L.A. county where I was raised. Vivid memories and this song will bring me back to an innocent time, not only for me personally, but for a nation that was still actually living in Happy Days.

I hated this song growing up because I didn't get it. When it showed up in Guardians of the Galaxy, I heard it differently. 624 voices is amazing.

Fantastic episode Professor. A song with many happy memories and finally I know how it was done. Incredible for 1975, even today it would be a heck of an achievement.
