In 1976, I took a course in entertainment law at USC. David Gates was our guest speaker one evening. He shared his experiences as a performer and songwriter, and then he took questions. He was really intelligent and well-spoken, and he came across as a genuinely down-to-earth person with his ego well under control. After the class, he hung around and talked with us. I was already a fan of his music, but I really respected him after that class.

“Make It With You” was David Gate’s breakthrough #1 hit. Soon after it hit the charts, he was back home in small town Kansas to see his mom. Proud of her son, she ambushed him with a promise to appear at her local ladies garden club. Of course, none of the women that age followed Top 40 radio, and arrangements played out with a quick verbal, same as how we all half make up our own lyrics while singing to the radio. David - and his mother - were horrified when the ladies garden club president made the introduction, “Today, we welcome Mrs. Gates’ son David who will sing his #1 National Hit, “Naked With You.”

David Gates was a very special talent as a songwriter and singer and Glen Campbell was one of the best guitarists of his era ( a member of the famed Wrecking Crew). Bread is a largely forgotten group but they were very popular for years, a band whose members had been among the best session players of that time. They are known for the quiet ballads but they could rock too. Listen to Guitar Man and Freedom, for example. Sadly, they will never get the recognition they deserved but fans of the group will always remember them fondly.

David Gates and Bread did not in later years get the recognition they deserved but just about every song they wrote and released was a hit at the time. One after another. So it is clear that their lyrics and music was so pure and true that everyone resonated with these songs. And looking back at them now, it is undeniable that these two singers/writers were very special.

I make no apologies when I claim the 1970s saw the perfect intersection of technology and creativity. Recording tech reached maturity with stereo, multitracks, headroom, fidelity, synths, and other production techniques. However, you still had actually play the instruments and sing in order to create a performance. The skill needed on both sides of the production process was a barrier to entry that kept all but the most talented people out of the industry. Digital killed everything. Anyway, great video!

@@justintime42000 interesting enough, what the mid 60s through the mid 70s was to rock music, the mid 70s through the mid 80s was to country music, which is what I mostly followed. Country even had its own version of Woodstock. It was called The Dripping Springs Reunion, which was the start of Willie Nelson's Fourth of July concerts. I wish the recording industry would forget about pitch correction, punch-in, sampling, and MIDI, and get back to analog recordings without digital enhancements. all this digital crap hasd stripped music of it's humanity and soul.

What a treat to hear David and Glen sing and play together. Both voices are perfectly controlled to convey this beautiful medley. You found the right words for David's gentle sound, "David's voice floats into you ears". They certainly could have been mistaken for a band that had been playing together for years, as you pointed out. Maybe someday we'll get back to music like this. Thanks for analyzing and showing the graph for this performance.

What is amazing is, back then, people were actually musically talented and had to consistently perform honestly, without having to rely on the click tracks and stuff. We still have actual musicians nowadays (Lady Gaga, for instance), but back before digitized music, you had to rely on your musicianship, and not on “fix it later.” You had to be a top-level performer. Not lazy about it. You had to actually know what you were doing.

David Gates was sitting next barstool over unbeknownst to me, and when he got up and left after much familiar salutation, the bartender asked me if i liked the group, BREAD. Of course! That's a neat story. I worked at a crappy little convenience store along a major interstate highway in the '80s. Every once in a while semi-celebrities would stop by for food and drink. I chatted with a very tall guy who accidentally dropped a guitar pick in my hand as he was paying in coins. The guitar pick caught my eye, and I struck up a conversation with him about how I as a teenager at the time was really getting good at the guitar. The tall guy started telling me about which songs on the radio he was emulating. It didn't enter my finite mind that he might be someone well known. We traded song titles for ten minutes, shook hands and he left with some of his entourage ("band mates"). After the band exited the store, a local customer said "You shithead. Do you know who you just bee-essed?" "No. Who was it?" "That was George Strait." "Who's that?" "You don't know who George Strait is? You're living in Texas. Look at his tour bus. It's out there in front."

I had a similar story where I was having about a 15 minute conversation with a guest and it went fine. One of the desk clerks called me as she left asking "how was she? how was she?" I was confused. She said, you didn't know you were talking with Gwyneth Paltrow?" Ha--no idea. Those are the best stories when they are that down to earth.
