Wings of Pegasus

Wings of Pegasus

Hello! Fil here from Wings of Pegasus. I've been playing guitar for 25 years and teaching professionally for 15 years. I've also been performing live for 17 years with various bands, but for the last 8 years my own project 'Wings of Pegasus' has been my focus. I have my original album called 'Persistence' on iTunes, Amazon and www.wingsofpegasus.com. I'm asked to do cover songs too (which you can find on this channel) which I play/sing from scratch so everything you can hear is me!

Recently I've had a lot of requests from my patrons and followers to make analysis videos due to my profession. I've had very positive feedback from greats such as Uli Jon Roth, Keb Mo, Neil Sedaka and welcomed friends Buck Dharma (Blue Oyster Cult), Frank Marino (Mahogany Rush), Phil Palmer (Eric Clapton, Dire Straits) to the channel for a chat. As long as there are requests I'll fulfil them!

THIS is a SCAM.

THIS is a SCAM.

Could you actually do a video analysis of _The Power of Love_ by Jennifer Rush, Celine Dion, and Laura Branigan, and pick your favorite rendition? They are all three amazing but I lean toward the Laura Branigan version.

Thank you Katherine for singing for real and unassisted during the live shows. That way, people who prefer tuning can have the produced version. And the rest of us can have the same orchestration, but with real vox, with the live version.

Not being a singer or musician. To me what makes it horrible is I personally don’t consider them rock and roll and don’t really think their music built any city let alone on ROCK AND ROLL!!!!!!!!!! April Wine, I Like to Rock. To me is one of the best rock n’ roll songs.

Fil, you ought to compare Gene Pitney's version of "Take Me Tonight" to Tom Jones' version. Gene's is so passionate and sensuous, and Tom's is guttural and forceful in comparison. And I do love Tom Jones, but the songs sound so totally different. I was wondering what you think about these two versions. I prefer Gene's version best.

A vocalist I would recommend of the same era is Timi Yuro , a powerful voice that doesn't get the recognition she deserves . Her biggest hit was Hurt which was covered by Elvis and later The Manhattans

After listening to Terry's version for all these years, trying to hang in there and listen to Elvis totally butcher it.....I just couldn't. By the way, you totally missed Elvis' voice crack near the beginning.

Especially in classical music pitches are not always discrete - especially with continuous tuning instruments. Sometimes minor 3rd is a bit flat to exaggerate the sad feeling. Same with the the cadences the 7th can be played/sung a bit sharp before the tonic chord. As you can guess there is a lot of discussion around this topic. Some puritans do not like piano, since it is a discrete tuning instrument ;-)

I don't remember where I heard this remark, but it's still the best description of Ms. Ono's singing I've ever heard. "I can get the same effect by stepping on my cat."

I think the echo chamber effect helped Terry's lack of vibrato. For those of us who have played Elvis's version over and over, the 'echo' assisted our imagination into believing that we hear it also in Terry's version. I think Terry really amplified how good that song is.

There needs to a legal requirement to clearly label recordings as being artificially pitched as it is not what most people expect (or want) to be buying. You are not getting a recording of the actual performance as initially captured

This is appalling. I am absolutely certain that musicians like her cannot bear to ever listen to their own recordings. It’s heartbreaking. They put everything into a performance and that’s what it ends up like, the soul sucked out of it. They must feel why the hell did I even bother! We are being robbed.

Yeah but with a voice like that surely she doesn't need to copy someone else, when she starts writing her own music and pens something even close to the songs the Carpenter's produced then she really will be a "Superstar"

It's all about integrity. True fans will gladly pay to see and hear their heroes perform, however old they are and whatever the venue. Whether it's a pub or an arena, it doesn't matter. It's the artiste that counts; it doesn't matter if they're old or frail or forgetful, as long as you're getting a real experience, a chance to be close to them, and maybe even to sing along and 'help' them through the difficult moments. But it has to be REAL, not 'enhanced' in order to justify high ticket prices. That would be offensive. That would be wrong. When Rush [outstanding Canadian rock trio] were close to retiring after 40 years of touring, vocalist Geddy Lee could no longer hit the thrilling high notes in songs that the audience knew perhaps as well as he did. But he didn't hide the fact. He made a huge effort to perform the songs as the fans knew and loved them, but nobody was in any doubt that his voice's glory days had passed. BUT IT DIDN'T MATTER. So what if the key had been shifted down a notch. So what if things dropped an octave here and there. The fans sang WITH their heroes, and the experience was all the more precious for the sense of trust and closeness engendered. What mattered was that Rush was there, on stage, playing live, and taking the fans along for the same ride they'd enjoyed for four decades. Everybody knew that Geddy was frustrated, but it became just another chapter in the story. And as a result, the band became even more admired - for not hiding behind special effects and audio 'fakery'. So Rush's devotees were privileged to be included in the band's last performances, even though the decline was hard to face. Yes, sometimes, the truth hurts. But an ounce of honesty is worth more than a pound of deception. Getting older is a part of life. The secret is to embrace the ageing process with dignity. Rush fans still had all of the band's studio and live recordings to listen back to if they wanted to hear the original versions; the latter day live performances were made special by the band's forthright honesty. Unlike... um, allegedly, unlike the , ah, The Yiggules. Allegedly.

Fil Buck brought in influences of many kinds of music into his sound and playing just for example: surf, rock and roll, jazz music from south of the border etc. He listened to many styles. Buck was much more than just rhythm he could pick too. ❤

I'll skip all "modern interpretations" of "Over The Rainbow", Thank You. A Better Comparison: Compare JUDY herself singing "Over The Rainbow" at age 16 (1939) with her singing it at age 38 at Carnegie Hall (live concert; 1961).

I honestly don't understand for the life of me, why they do this. What is the obsession with taking the emotion out of the human voice. Don't these producers understand that what makes music so good is being able to tell how the singers are feeling about the song they are singing. If a singer is performing a song that makes their throat ache with tears and maybe go a little flat, that makes the song so much better. I am 100 % more critical of pitch correction than I am the human voice with no correction. Honestly I think we need an organization that demands organic music. No additives just the talent of the one that is singing. We need warning labels!!! Cause honestly pitch correction makes my ears perk up and not in a good way. As always Fil, fabulous analysis. I do appreciate the time you give us.

I love your channel Fil, so please know I am not being hateful when I say this. I honestly think you are overthinking it. What makes Terry Staffords version so much better is the musical arrangement, the added instruments, background singers and his soft almost non existant vibrato (sometimes it just isn't needed). Honestly it gives his version a depth that Elvis' was missing. Now, I love me some Elvis. He is one of those singers, that when he did a song, nobody was ever again going to do that song justice. But, that being said, once Terry Stafford did this one, nobody else could do it justice. I could go into greater depth about Terry Staffords vocals, but folks don't come here to hear me prattle on. As always wonderful video. I appreciate the time you take to make these videos for us. As always a wonderful viewing experience.
