10cc - I'm not in love (1975) REACTION

"I'm Not in Love" is a song by British group 10cc, written by band members Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman. It is known for its innovative and distinctive backing track, composed mostly of the band's multitracked vocals. Released in the UK in May 1975 as the second single from the band's third album, The Original Soundtrack, it became the second of the group's three number-one singles in the UK between 1973 and 1978, topping the UK Singles Chart for two weeks. "I'm Not in Love" became the band's breakthrough hit outside the United Kingdom, topping the charts in Canada and the Republic of Ireland as well as peaking within the top ten of the charts in several other countries, including Australia, Germany, New Zealand, Norway and the United States.

I was about 4 years old in the UK when I heard this on our little radio on a foggy dreary morning in 1975. Although I didn't understand the song's meaning, I found it melancholic, mesmerising and somewhat like an otherworldly angelic or spirit choir in the background. A very haunting memory of childhood. 52 now and still love it. Be quiet. Big boys don't cry, big boys don't cry......

The entire song's production was built around the towered harmonies - 256 different voices bounced very craftily - to get that "stadium / grand hall" vocal effect. And this was back in the analog days.

Big fan of 10CC here, so yes please more. Most of their songs have some deeper meaning, sometimes just in a humoristic way, sometimes in a kind of philosopical way, but a lot of time they realy just tell a story, and on occasion based on true events. You should try blackmail, a more humoristic song, about, well a blackmail, but with a plottwist.

I used to listen to the song in junior high school all the time back in the 70s. Loved it! Still love it. Yeah the whole point of the song is that he's in denial about being in love. It's kind of psychological picture of someone who won't admit they still love someone. About 10cc they were real big in the 70s with this one hit. I don't know any other songs they did that were popular though.

Now you HAVE to watch 'The making of 10cc's I'm Not in Love' to find out how 3 guys from the 4 piece band, singing "ahhhhh" became 624 voices for the backing track. At the end you have the full version ( this one has a terrible edit at 4:53) with just a black screen. Best listened to with headphones in a dark room. The bass and the little chimes just before "Sshh, big boys don't cry" (their secretaries voice), takes me back to Cornwall 1983 when I saw them perform this live. The sun was going down and the crowd, in a farmers field, all stood in silence taking in the magical atmospherics. I'll never forget that moment. 🤔

This is a good song but my favorite song of theirs is called "The Things We Do For Love". It sounds like a choir backing him but all it is is the band dubbed over and over again to make 3 or 4 guys sound like hundreds. Oh, he's in love alright. He protests too much not to be :) The "Big Boys don't cry" line was the voice of a secretary from their studio they got to say that line.

He doesn’t love her. He likes being with her but he won’t commit to her. He would commit to her if he loved her but doesn’t love her, think of it like this, they had a one night stand, and they had an incredible time. She loved it so much that in the back of her mind, she might be in love with him, and when he gets the message, he’s trying to tell her I don’t love you , we’re not lovers. That’s why the lyrics are so cold.

TEN C C were 4 Master Musicians who were big in The UK in The 1970's/1980's and all their songs are very different from each other. Their variation was amazing and partly due to having 2 great pairs of songwriting teams in the Group with different styles. The EXTENDED version of this is TWICE as good....:)

Fun fact which has been used in the past in relation to the bands nam. This may be a myth but those of us around in the 70s listening to this band heard the reason for the name was ….. it was 1cubic centimetre more than the average quantity of human male ejaculate. If this is not the case it should be as it has been the backbone of many an anecdote. Have a great day.

However, popular belief is that they adopted the name because the average male ejaculation is 9cc and the band was above average with 1cc more than that!

*Yeah, no offense Tysheen, but you got the whole meaning behind this one wrong! I suspect it's just another example of how different British culture is to American. In the song, he's absolutely besotted with his lady, BUT... he's trying to play it cool, pretending he's not that bothered whether they stay together or not. But inside, his heart is breaking at the idea of them splitting up. That's why in the middle 8, the female voice just keeps repeating **_"Big boys don't cry, big boys don't cry"_** That's how he (and millions of other men) were raised/brought up. As a man, if you cry or show your emotions, you're being soft, weak, unmanly, immature. I'm not saying that's how it should be, but it's just how guys of a certain age (in the UK at least) were brought up. Showing emotion is a sign of real weakness in a boy or a man.*

I agree with you. He is heartbroken, and wants to tell her so, but he's hearing the words "Big boys don't cry." as a memory, perhaps, or at least as an admonition from his childhood that men shouldn't cry. I think he's tortured, and he's living tragically, because his instinct is to tell her how he really feels (remember, he's speaking directly to the woman as he sings) but the social convention says that men must not show weakness. In addition, at the end of each verse, he sings, "It's because....." .... but he never explains the cause ... because he can't bring himself to say it... that he loves her and misses her. I was raised in the 1950's here in the US, and while I don't recall my mother saying "Big boys don't cry." to me as a child, I was certainly aware of the phrase. And I suspect most of my male friends were aware of it, too. It was well intended, but perhaps inadvertently damaging. Ciao! BTW, the whole album on which this song was included is great! I also like "One Night in Paris" and "Life Is a Minestrone." Great songs .... great times!

You can't listen to this song thinking in today's cynical & overly sexualized society, this was written at a different time, 45 years ago. He feels & means the complete opposite of what he's saying, he doesn't want to be hurt, so he's playing it safe & coy.

The commenters below have the right take on the true meaning of the songs lyrics. Take it from a seventies white boy that the guy is trying to hide his emotions and love for the lady.

"10 cc" is a quite pragmatic name. A founder of the band has found in a study this was the median volume of seminal fluid excreted by males during a romantic intercourse. Ten cubic centimeters.

It's a great song but this is edited even shorter than the usual radio version - give the full version a go in your own time, it's a real trip

You need to react to Steve Holy - Just A Kiss. It's much better than the last song you reacted to by him.
