This Song Was OUTLAWED by CORPORATE Radio…UNTIL Pirate Stations Made It a #1 Hit!--Professor of Rock

Ойын-сауық

Up next, the story of the most famous grammatically incorrect rock solvo in history. and The Legendary riff came to the guitarist in a dream… I Can’t Get No Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones. Keith Richards dreamt the famous riff and then rolled out of bed and recorded it. Funny thing is he meant for the riff heard round the world to be a horn section and he was worried he may have inadvertently ripped it off. Thank goodness the horns didn’t take. When he showed it to singer Mick Jagger. The frontman went nuts. He wrote the lyrics and they became the greatest middle finger to the man lyrics in the rock canon and then to top it all off The song got banned for being too suggestive! Pirate Radio stations started playing it and then it blew up! The story of a true 60s classic next on Professor of Rock.

Many have called it the most influential guitar riff ever played and it was most certainly an explosion on radio that ignited hundreds if not thousands of bands... It all started in the year 1965 When The Rolling Stones released “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction"- an instant smash with that irresistible guitar riff, and anthemic ‘shout it out loud’ chorus that captivated the social spirit of the mid-60s.
The song was neither grammatically, or politically correct, with its double-negative title, and its audacious lyrics about sexual frustration and the machination of commercialism. A middle finger to the man.
It was the first #1 song for The Rolling Stones in America- topping the pop chart for 4 weeks, and ranked as the 3rd biggest single of the year by Billboard Magazine behind another song with a parenthetical title “(I Can’t Help Myself) Sugar Pie Honey Bunch” at the #2 spot, and Sam Sham & the Pharaohs “Wooly Bully” finishing with top supremacy for 1965. One of the greatest top 5s ever.
“Satisfaction” went to #1 in Ireland, Australia, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, South Africa, and Austria. It was the 4th number-one single in the UK for the Rolling Stones.
When Satisfaction first came out, commercial radio stations in Europe wouldn’t touch it, labeling the song as “too suggestive.” However, pirate radio stations that did not have a valid license to broadcast were all over the song, and the outlaw airplay generated such a huge buzz for the song, that eventually every station with a stick was forced to play it.
(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction was another classic song that was conceived during the R.E.M. sleeping phase. It’s incredible how often that has happened. On May 6th, 1965, The Rolling Stones were scheduled to perform for about 3,000 people at Jack Russell Stadium in Florida, as one of the stops on their first US tour. An altercation broke out between police & some of the concertgoers. Some 200 fans were involved, and the melee forced the Stones to abort their performance.

Finally got to see the Rolling Stones a couple years ago, took my parents. They have always been my father's favorite band and they had never managed to see the Stones live since he was a young man in the 60s. Satisfaction was the finale, and seeing the joy on his face made it worth every cent and a whole lot more! The Stones still rock it better than any band half their age, amazing!

My second-cousin was in the U.S. Army in the early 1960’s. When he came back from his assigned post in Germany, he had the exact model of Phillips cassette recorder/player seen in a print ad in this video. Along with the machine, he had STACKS of cassettes with music on them (which he’d recorded himself)… pre-recorded music cassettes weren’t a thing yet, and most Americans had never even seen a cassette at that time. Seeing that ad reminded me that I haven’t seen one of those MONO cassette machines in the Philips ad in a very long time. The “Compact Cassette” was originally designed for dictation, but almost as soon as cassettes and the machines to use them appeared, people started putting their favorite tunes on cassettes. They didn’t sound all that great, but they were convenient. Once Phillips, Sony, and the other manufacturers of the machines got wind of this, they started working on ways to make cassettes sound better. By the time Our Dear Professor was buying pre-recorded music cassettes, the manufacturers had come up with a number of things - like making the head gap smaller (it was through this gap the machine could “write” the magnetic impulses to the 1/8th inch tape inside all cassettes, and through the same type of gap that the playback head was able to pick up these impulses, turn them into a tiny voltage, and send them to be amplified to a level that was high enough to move speaker cones, and *Voila!* there was music! My relative brought back pirate cassettes of Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, The Animals… literally dozens of top music acts. He was pleased to not have to worry about lots of 12” LP albums, but still have his music. His tapes may have been the first “mixtapes” on the North American continent!

Absolutely nailed this, my friend. Favorite Stones song. Greatest guitar riff: yes; the "click" and the late distortion--that somehow was just right--yes; Otis Redding and Stax reviving the horn arrangement notion, YES; REM Florida hotel inspiration, yes. Plus a lot of stuff I didn't know. Your research and care in discussing these songs is so impressive and instructive, thank you. "Satisfaction" in the summer of '65 was the song to skateboard to. "Sugar Pie Honeybunch" was the song you listened to at the public pool in Oakland. Memories. Then, Christmas 1965, the world changed as we unwrapped "Rubber Soul" under the tree. I have super 8 footage of that earthquake in the making. Thank you! PS: my nomination for worst grammatical crime on a song is "Lay Lady, Lay." On "Satisfaction" we know the grammar is wrong and don't care. On "Lay Lady, Lay," Dylan forever ruined the correct tense of that word. Also not his best work, IMHO. But...we still don't care! Thanks again!

My uncle was a singer who never quite made it, and I remember a car ride when I was a kid during which we were listening to a cassette tape (this was the early to mid-1980s) of his recordings he was explaining to my mother (who is a non-native English speaker) why there was a double negative in one of the songs, and that it doesn't mean the opposite of a single negative, and so on. It's one of my relatively few very vivid childhood memories, just that little snippet. I grew up into a bit of a language nerd, so maybe that explains something.

The left channel has bass, drums and electric guitar, from the original session. Tambourine played by Jack Nitzsche. The middle is Mick. The right channel has the overdubs which consist of an acoustic guitar, and a very faint honky tonk piano played by Jack . It was recorded at the RCA studio in Hollywood Ca. were The Last Time was also recorded. It's not clear if they used a 3 or 4 track at RCA. Keef, fortunately you were wrong about that song! I remember when that song came out. I was growing up in Germany at the time. The Stones absolutely turned the country upside down! They were so divisive….. Oh my, how the older generation despised the Stones! Of course that made them all the more alluring to us teens. 🤣. When I was in nursing school my entire class got grounded one day because some of us admitted to liking The Rolling Stones. So much for honesty! 🙄 I had the great privilege of seeing the Stones (including Charlie) a few years ago near SF. They were nearing 80, and still filled a football stadium! Unfreakingbelievable! One of the best concerts I ever went to. Back in the day I would never have believed the Stones would still be around at age 80, and still be releasing new music! Thanks, professor, great analysis! ❤

4:38 What Keith Richards did -- dreaming a riff, waking up, recording it, dozing off again -- is what I used to do in the Sixties, and it's something I still find myself doing. The only difference for me is that a KORG digital recorder/mixer has replaced my old Montgomery Ward's cassette recorder. When a great idea pops into your head during REM sleep, it's essential to record it or write it down on paper right away, because the memory will fade away if you just go back to sleep.

One thing thst is hardly ever mentioned about "Satisfaction" is the richer, dynamic sound of the riff in the chorus as a result of Bill Wyman playing an A, or fifth note of the D chord triad..... _instead of a D_ ! It gives it a wider, broader attack.

"Satisfaction" is definitely a standout song among Rolling Stones classics for me. Overtime, I've come to understand why my own mother is not a fan of theirs. Mick is a good singer, but I'm not as big a fan of him as a singer as I am of him as a lyricist and a human being. I will say that he sounds excellent singing this one. One thing I wasn't conscious of before I became an adult is how the type of fuzz box that Keith plugged into to get the desired tone on his guitar was originally intended to give guitarists the ability to emulate string, brass and woodwind instruments. It wasn't remotely about what it mutated into after the British Invasion began. I also remember at one point when I was just beginning to learn how to play guitar trying to play my own version of "Paint It Black"; my father was in the next room listening to me and started singing "Satisfaction". I was left with the task of having to say to him, "Right band, wrong song". In 1987,, a film came out titled Satisfaction, which star Justine Bateman as a burgeoning rock musician whose band (Mystery) covers this song at the conclusion. (Liam Neeson is the male lead.) Co-stars include Julia Roberts in one of her earliest roles and Brita Phillips whose singing voice is heard in the title role of the animated series Jem. It's worth a look if you can find it.

Was going to point out the "Justine Bateman & The Mystery" (as it was credited) version too. That was my favorite cover of the song. It's like the original, but updated with 1980s technology - no clicks switching on and off the fuzz box LOL, multi-track recording so it was tighter, and just cleaner sound due to better recording gear and studio acoustics. Throw in some rockin' female voices, and you get a truly unique version that pays homage to the original. Too bad the movie flopped.
