Things movies and games get wrong about gas masks

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Stupid things movies and video games get wrong about gas masks/respirators.
These often include, people wearing gas masks without filters rendering the mask almost useless.
Wearing a sealed filter on the mask, this would cause the wearers suffocation.
People not using respirators they possess when it would help them in a scenario, that might be more bad writing than a mistake.
FPS/POV view from respirators with limited visibility, not how the human eye would see it.

    But that's the thing, if the characters are doing the right things but the threat is still imminent, that means it's a real threat. Rather than a minor nuisance blown out of proportion by the characters being idiots and making it worse.

    I did a video just about how stupid Siege was, Sledge has no filters on his make and worse, has the blanking plugs in, meaning he would suffocate to death. Mute has tape over the exhale valve of his mask, meaning if he breathes out, it would actually be louder because the mask would make a farting noise as the air is forced out from around the edges of the mask.

    The reason why games portray gas masks like that, to see through the lens as they do is for game purposes I guess. So there’s pros and cons to it. Pro - you can Breathe. Con - vision is limited and makes gameplay harder Take battlefield 1 for example

  • @Weaponsandstuff93

    @Weaponsandstuff93

    6 жыл бұрын

    Verdun is the best example, because it does it in a realistic way that still makes shooting and situational awareness harder, the mask steams up rather than artificially restricting vision, and you have less peripheral vision, it also uses the loud breathing noises to make listing for enemies harder.

    Weaponsandstuff93 It's because that makes the game harder, you need to be fast so you don't run out of filters. It would be nonsensical if they added the duration of the gas masks to be 24h. It's like an obstacle in every video game.

  • @Weaponsandstuff93

    Depends a lot on what causes the filter to deteriorate, if it's a particulate threat then in theory they would last a long time, charcoal would always last longer than 5 minutes, but obviously it's for gameplay reasons to make the surface sections more tense.

  • @Weaponsandstuff93

    @Weaponsandstuff93

    6 жыл бұрын

    Well it's for gameplay reasons in the game, obviously Metro being a fictional game it doesn't really matter, as ENDERHART said, being recycled filters goes a bit of the way to explain it, but that still wouldn't be realistic in the sense that a filter would still last a couple of hours with really poor quality charcoal in if exposed to a vapour threat, as for radioactive dust, they would last literally hours, as dust is stopped by a particle layer on a filter, not the charcoal.

    The 1 thing i hated when i saw the gas mask in Battlefield 1.That the gas mask the allies wear was a british gas mask from the 1930s and if you think about that world war 1 was 1914-1918 and in the new dlc they added russians. They could have used the Zelinsky-Kummant( the first gas mask to use charchoal based filters).I was kinda a bit angry because i care about realisim.And in rainbow six siege the S.A.S operators i was upset because they were not wearing s10 (except thatcher).What do you think?

If you can afford an NBC suit for a film but somehow you can't afford or do not wish to acquire a filter for the mask your wearing it's kind of funny when you think about it. I like the video dude. Mask that I've noticed through out the Call Of Duty franchise would be, Modern Warfare 4 (GP5, Avon S10), Modern Warfare 2 (Avon S10, Unknown variant worn by septsnaz Solders), Modern Warfare 3 (Avon S10, Avon M50, GP5, and a modified version of the PMK-1), Black Ops (French ANP M51, altered version of the U.S M3 respirator, and an unknown MCU 2p rip off). I'm interested as to what new Mask the COD franchise is going to introduce and how much there going to differ from their real world counterparts. But I've to agree with the hole balaclava issue. I understand it's done because it visually looks cool in games and movies and provides a sinister profile but, its completely out of the realm of practicality and I've practiced it with a balaclava and a thin ninja hood on my Canadian C3 M69, ANP M51, and M40A1, and all seal test completely failed. And last but not least, in MW3 how are the spetsnaz wearing a balaclava under a GP5 hood style mask?

    In the game, there are gasses that damage the player and make them blink faster. The blink feature is so 173 can go to you (when it gets to close, it snaps your neck, and it only moves when not looked at.). This gas is commonly found in the SCP 939 Basement, you only go there to get the night vision goggles and a severed hand. At times you must put on the gas mask (Found in Light Containment Zone), to avoid breathing in the gas. It has the ghosting effect. In the NTF (Epsilon-11, Nine Tailed Fox) Mod, you spawn with the mask on and have to enter the facility with a P90 and Pistol, it also has that effect. Sorry if I talked about the games too much, but they are interesting horror games.

The british cavalry soldiers had WWII civilian masks, german soldiers with PH gas hoods (accurate, but would be better with an actual german mask), and then the masks steve and everyone wore during the end battle looked like british military masks from WWII, or white canadian C3's! and of course, the Mark V at the german base bugged me, bat that's a rant for another time.
