Why did gas masks have hoses?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A video explaining why old gas masks had hoses rather than filters attached directly to the mask, and how most NATO nations had moved away from hose masks attached to big filters by the 1960s, however the Soviet Union and Warsaw PACT carried on for longer.

    When I was still on tanks, our M40 gas masks came with long tubes to attach to each crew compartment in the tank. The tank had its own NBC filtration system so you could use that instead of a canister. Typically the commander and loader would use canisters to allow for easier movement and to be able to easily get out of the tank if needed. The gunner and driver would connect to the vehicle system. Best part was, the NBC system on the tank would naturally make the air cold after the filtering process. So we would take the hoses and shove them into the crotch of our coveralls to blow cold air on our jimmies while operating during the summer. Contrary to popular belief, the M1A1 does not have air conditioning. The M1A2 does, however it rarely ever works.

    @Skeksoval imagine you are i fight and you must change your filter so you just screw off the old and screw on then new one... BUT YOU, you must close eyes, hold your breath and change the filters which will take you like minute and you must do it blind and no breathing.

    As far as I'm aware they just used dust masks, standard Soviet ShM-41 masks and maybe IP-4 re-breathers? I've done a video on the IP-5 and I have a video coming up on the ShM-41.

  • @erander7879

    @erander7879

    They used IP-4 rebreathers specially designed for that aswel as IP-5 these were specailly made for liquidation also not sure if you mentioned it, interesting fact, soviet hoses had one more purpose, it was either connect it to oxy tank or have filter for like military masks in bag so you wouldn't bash your teeth out while running with such soft gp5 bottom feeding filter mask types.

    Longer hose, more air to clear before you suck thru filter, hoses make it marginally more difficult to breathe, but that's still way better than breathing in whatever your trying to filter!

So I just ordered myself a gp5 with a carry case and an activated charcoal filter all for around $40 US. I probably could have found it cheaper but I want it now lol. Just wondering, how do you spell the name of the newer 40mm filters you said would fit it. Is it stag? I’m trying to order a bunch of filters for it. Thanks man

    Russian filters are 40mm GOST, NATO STANAG filters won't fit them properly without modifying the mask. Polish FP5 filters will fit the GP-5 and are safe to use.

    Basically every task soldier needs to do suddenly becomes easier if you have a hose attached filter (or theoretically even cheek filter, but from that arises one new problem): your head is not weighed down by filter, filter does not get in a way of aiming, filter does not get in a way of crawling (even side-attached filters don't solve that 100%) and you can last longer in hostile environment.

    With some masks it's a lot easier to get a cheek weld on a rifle when you have a tube to a filter as opposed to a big clunking filter on your cheek...that's why the m40 has two filter ports, so you can put it on the opposite side of your rifle, but if you only have one port, a hose may be a good fix

    I think a few people have mentioned it long before I made videos but it was mostly just speculation over if a certain filter had asbestos in or not. As for the Drager West German filters, they should be absolutely fine if they have a date stamp on them, the only issue is WW2 German filters look very similar and do as far as I'm aware contain asbestos.

    From a financial and even survival point if view the big filters with hose make a lot more sense. I could imagine a huge canister like that would last a very long time as opposed to the little overpriced filters we get these days.

    In terms of expiry dates they would be very similar but yes, in actual use, box filters last longer than small canister filters.
