Surplus Gas Masks, what to buy and what to avoid?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Surplus Gas Masks, what masks to buy and what masks to avoid?
There are lots of surplus gas masks or respirators out there, and it seems a lot of preppers are misinformed when it comes to how a gas mask actually works.
In this video, we take a look at the types of gas masks available on the surplus market to evaluate which gas masks are good and which gas masks should be avoided.
An important thing to note is that even filters that have expired, will often provide adequate protection from tear gas and other riot control gasses.
Masks mentioned in this video are the M10m and PBF cheek filter masks.
The Canadian C3 and Finnish M61 60mm filter masks.
The CT12 and GP5 40mm filter masks.

Duel filter masks have the bonus of being able to add a second filter making it easier to replace them in field. Otherwise you'd have to hold you're breath while swapping them out.

Most preppers are kidding them selves in regards to masks anyway...like you have said, the filters have a 10 yr shelf life and the actual rubber masks are scrapped as U S after a maximum of 20yrs(the last 10yrs training only).then you come to nbc suits that are only good for 10years lol...the only practical use a prepper could expect to live long enough to don one would be against tear gas as you have said....real nbc attacks would kill em dead...the lads in gulf 1 had to wear the suits all the time because they wouldnt have got them on in time when the siren went...best advice would be for preppers to buy NEW industrial filters as they are avalible and would work the same for tear gas and more likely encountered industrial accidents

Yeah, Tumbo's comments are very realistic, even when you know what you're doing, if anything major happened you're screwed anyway due to how deadly the gas is, it's like if you lived in a major city and it got nuked. That being said a mask in good condition with a working filter can protect you from a lot of other stuff like, tear gas, lower threat chemical weapons such as chlorine gas, airborne viruses and industrial disasters.

My idea was to remove the cheek filters and replace them with a tube that conects to a filter tank. I think the biggest chalange is to find a adapter that fits perfect with the mask so that there is no leak.

I had a yugoslavian mc1 gasmask with a 60mm filter, just for the coolness. I later got into prepping etc and was planning on getting some more filters. Recently I removed it from its bag and the filter came off. I thought it must have come loose and went to screw it back in. I then noticed that the thread had been ripped off the mask. Upon closer inspection the rubber where the thread once sat was still maleable and tacky to the touch like the rubber didn't set properly. such a shame but in all honesty it wasn't the most comfortable mask plus the texture inside makes your skin itch. Im kind of glad it broke now than when i needed it. I was planning an upgrade and got a 1982 british s6 that is in unused condition. Absolutely spotless inside and out (apart from the usual fluff etc) with no signs of cracking etc, gave it a good soak. it seals well etc I was just wondering whether it would be safe to rely on or whether it would be better to get something newer like an s10 or gsr.

If you start smell anything through the filter and have tested that the mask seals properly to your face, then the filter is letting particles through, hold your breath and swap filters asap. Also if you notice that the mask is sucked in towards your face as you breathe in without blocking the filter intake, then the filter is almost saturated and needs replacing, but it's less urgent than if you smell something other than rubber and sweat.

No I don't think so. Most asbestos filled canisters are the ones dated before 1972 although, some canisters have small traces of asbestos, but if you're worried about asbestos in masks you've breathed, get an x-ray. But asbestos canisters shouldn't be a big threat.
