The therapist in I Want to Die But I Want to Eat Tteokbokki also kinda sucked. They literally tell the mc that her anxiety is a burden on others and a lot of times their advice boiled down to “don’t feel that way.” Girl I’d have depression too if that was my therapist

It's so validating that a bad book gets you into a reading slump too. I tracked my books last year and my worst slumps were after a bad book or a really bad DNF and it sucked. I wanted to read but pushing past the slump is so hard.

I think 2023 forced us to not to be completionists anymore... there were so many terrible books that if everytime I went through hell to finish a book just for said book to put me in a reading slump I would probably end up not reading anymore. Before 2023 I used to finish every series I started no matter how bad they were, now I struggle to finish a book? I already get like 3 or 4 "spares" books if I'm in a reading mood just in case the first try is dnf'ed and that's a first in all my life

You made your book reviews of the bad books very engaging. I liked Hello Stranger though because the face blindness is relatable for me so I didn't find it that unrealistic how she didn't connect two separate concepts of people at different locations as one (and she recovered from brain damage too). Plus it was interesting to find out how people apparently are supposed to recognise others. There are many changeable things about people, conversation clues and names are the best hints. Btw. good tip for DNFing books.

  • @caricanread

i just couldnt get over how her best friend knew that she had facial blindness and constantly kept forgetting or not announcing herself or helping her in any way? like if my friend had an accident and had brain damage from it i would be more aware and concerned. that was so unrealistic to me!

Yeah, I get what you mean. It's not a perfect book so I get it when people dislike it. Though it's the first book I've seen that deals with face blindness with relatable moments without it being magical or more depressing.

i honestly kind of wonder how much of i want to die but i want to eat tteokbokki's tone came from the (imo not great) translation choices. i've read quite a few pieces from this translator, and i've always found he makes the english copy seem super abstracted and distant. even if the advice presented isn't that great, maybe at least the characters' voices are a little better when in their original korean?? haven't gotten around to getting a korean copy yet so can't say for sure though.

This is very true for a lot of media. I live in Brazil, and we had some cases of poorly translated works becoming worse versions of the original. It's a shame, I truly believe translating and adapting is an awesome feat, but I wish more work was put into understanding what is being translated.

Hi Cari, I’m wondering if you read Trudi Canavan’s The Black Magician Triology? The first book was published in 2001 and it’s been so long but I remember absolutely eating it up and loving it. I don’t own the books but I plan to get them from the library to reread 😊 Also, if you read Manga I have a recommendation for a series. It’s quite long but so good imo. Akatsuki No Yona/Yona of the Dawn (adventure, historical fantasy, romance, action). The first few volumes were turned into a pretty faithful anime adaptation, so if you’re interested you can check it out in that format too 😊 (the main character is very sheltered and in various ways immature in the beginning, but she undergoes a lot of great character development and growth ❤)

The power of DNF-ing a book is so important. There are so many books out there to explore - so if you're not feeling it, just put it down. Maybe it's not for you and not worth your time, or maybe it's just not the right time to read it, so maybe sometime later.

I love that you’re not afraid to say exactly what’s on your mind. I feel with some of the other booktubers that they’re pulling their punches because they don’t want to upset anyone so you can never be sure what they really think. Thank you Cari 💛. Some of the worst books I read in 2023 were all but two of the Never After series by Emily McIntire. I quite liked Hook and I really liked Scarred but they went downhill from there. There wasn’t one likeable character in Wretched and it’s the only book that made me feel as though I wanted to wash my hands after reading it. I dnf’d it about halfway through, and Crossed was about a serial killer priest and his almost equally deranged girlfriend who get it on while covered in the blood of one of her victims at the end! I didn’t bother to try Twisted.

I love the way you talk about books, even the ones that are terrible (maybe even more so those?). 2023 was my year of reading books I heard a lot of good things about and thought were just ok. The main ones were What Moves the Dead, Heartless, Gilded and Cursed. I thought What Moves the Dead would be super creepy and atmospheric but I found it underwhelming. I did love Nettle and Bone so I'm looking forward to more T.Kingfisher, especially the Paladin series you rec. The other 3 I liked the idea and the writing was fine but I found them all just very flat. The big scene in Heartless didn't elicit any emotions from me. It's turned me off Marisa Meyer. One I flat out disliked was House of Marionne which made the rounds in the fall. I almost DNF'ed it but it was a very breezy read. Cool magic system and 1 unexpected twist but that was it. Juvenile writing, no chemistry between the love interests, it seems like everything happens within a month and what was supposed to be the big twist was visible from another continent. Happy 2024 reading!

This year was my lowest average rating of any year, it was a struggle. I think of books that made me mad, Iron Flame was the worst. If I hadn't loved Fourth Wing as much as I did, I would've DNF'd it. I'm going to be much better about that this year.

OK, if you are gonna read a fanfiction, then I must recommend you read Alphabet Soup by CoffeeIncluded. It's basically a rewrite of a Pokemon game (Black and White) you don't really need to know much about Pokemon or the game, or read it for the video, just read to see how good fanfiction can be.

bahahahaha its so funny to hear facial blindness being in a book. I have been told I may have it. Im sure it comes out differently in everyone who experiences it but for me its more like not being able to register a familiar face to a stranger's unless there was some impression. for example, i can recognize someone i met with only when he wears a hat because thats how i was introduced to him. its a struggle because people have taken it offensively and i understand why. also... Go off sis

I was also very disappointed in I Want To Die But I Also Want To Eat Tteokbokki because the advice from the therapist was so run of the mill, general life advice than I could give....like, it was advertised as this deep dive into depression and such but mostly they adjusted her dosis and never got actually deep into anything....and I understand not wanting to share everything because as I understand the author shares her own story in the book but with that title I had different expectations.

As someone with prosopagnosia (often referred to as face blindness, such as here), I really like seeing media incorporate it. It's actually not as uncommon as some might think, yet a lot of people don't know about it. Unfortunately, it sounds like Hello Stranger didn't do a good job of representing it. I can't speak for how someone with an accident would adapt to it, but as someone who has had it as long as I can remember (probably being born with it), I can say that I have plenty of ways to identify people without their faces. Heck, the idea of being able to use faces for identification was foreign to me until I was about thirteen, which was when a doctor enlightened me to it. For some context, I primarily use hair as an identifier, with voices/clothes/general appearances (such as height/build) being supporting factors. I knew someone whose cousin also had prosopagnosia; apparently he identified people by their hands, which was wild to me, but if it worked for him, hey, more power to him. TL;DR: As someone with face blindness, it sounds like either the author of Hello Stranger didn't really get it or the protagonist was a complete moron, but that's only based off the summary you gave here. XD
