As soon as I saw your short on Five Broken Blades I ordered it immediately!! As for dnf’s, mine normally fall into two camps; can’t read it right at that moment for what ever reason or, I didn’t like it at all for some reason. One of my dnf’s that I have tried over and over to read is Jade City since it was so highly rated. I finally gave up and said “not for me”. Life is too short for a read that you don’t enjoy! 🙂

I’ve never had a problem with dnf’ing any book. If it’s not doing it for me for whatever reason, I stop. I honestly don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t 🤷‍♀️

With some book series, I remember the whole series and the most important plots and characters but I can't remember what happened in every single book. I remember the series as a whole.

It's very easy to figure out which are to be effed and which are DNFed, those books which grip you through the initial pages, you F, if they don't, you DNF.

I'm so quick to DNF books, but now I have a rule where I'll read at least 20% of a book before putting it down. Cause some of those fantasy books have a big learning curve with the worldbuilding --- So far this year I've DNF'd/put down: Silver Under Nightfall: Just wasn't enjoying where the plot was going and kept noticing grammar and word choice errors Masters of Death: Was listening to an audiobook and kept getting lost with who was talking when....and then my library hold expired haha A Tempest of Tea: It was good, but I was finding it was too many POV's for me. Not a goodbye forever just maybe not now

Yeah hard pass on Lore of the Wilds. Sounds like the author doesn't have the skill to write what they were trying to write, and like you said, I don't have time to read poorly written books.

i didn't really like powerless but i did finish it - it doesn't get much better lol. as a massive hunger games fan, the way it was marketed as similar to the hunger games almost offended me, it really had none of that poignant social commentary or the likeable/love to hate characters that thg had :(((

I also DNFed The Gilded Wolves because I didn't realize that it was YA when I picked it up, and I've honestly just outgrown the genre. If I had read that when I was younger, I would probably have loved it. Though when you said you loved the second book in the series even after DNFing the first time around, it did make me reconsider maybe picking it up again myself.

I am usually pretty good at DNFing. Unless I think that I *should* like a book. At the moment it’s with OUABH. I’m on the second book and I want to stop but I’m deluding myself to think that I will enjoy it eventually?

I really agree re: Faebound. I loved her other books, and so was super excited. I hated it! I got further than you, but it put me in a slump. So predictable, such nonsense, and the romances made me want to throw it.

Ironically the one book I DNFed this year was Throne in the dark by A. K. Caggiano. 😅 I wasn't expecting much from it. I was looking for a chill, low-stakes kind of story with a cute romance alongside it and from what little I read, it seemed to have it. But something about it just didn't stick with me. The humour was a little bit hit or miss, particularly the funny dialogue. I like that the story didn't take itself too seriously, where it's almost making fun of a lot cliché, but some of the dialogue was quite clunky. And ultimately what I didn't enjoy about this was the writing. There's long run-on sentences that sometimes didn't make any sense, with strange word's placement, an example: "A brighter mood was, after all, a much easier way to exist in the world, whether it was kind back to one or not." One what? It's just feels a bit unpolished, like it really could have used a heavy editing hand. And overall I wasn't very interested in the characters. I'm not a fan of the obedience stone plot line that completely removes the main female character's agency. And Amma seems particularly ditzy and that's really not my cup of tea. I'm just wasn't gripped enough to bother wasting the time to read the 400+ pages plus the next book in the series. But I think it could scratch an itch for a lot of people. Different stroke for different folks 🤷‍♀

I dnfed the cruel prince probably in 2018 when it came out because I didn't really get it and didn't like the characters and then tried it again last year because of all the hype and i wanted to know why does everyone love this series when i didn't. And then i loved it. And i love the characters. One of my favorite series now lol.

Powerless is pretty much if the red queen and the hunger games had a daughter but the daughter was made out of their own limbs. It was just so much like the red queen, almost like a carbon copy of it. Although I feel like the romance in powerless was a tad better.

I tend to dnf books I didn't choose for myself. I'll get influenced by booktube or bookstagram and then just give up 3 days after having opening the book. It's really a pattern lol. Doesnt happen everytime of course, but every book I've dnfed in the last few years were books I'd let an influencer convince me of reading. So I'm just more aware these days, I try to not be as impulsive in order to make sure I follow my taste

i was gifted the first book when i was pretty young and just absolutely in love with YA fantasy. i didnt know anything about it and i was also in the process of dealing with sexual assault from a family member. needless to say, the incest plotline was both unexpected and incredibly unwelcome.

in my opinion we need to allow a bit of boredom back into our lives. so you picked up a book and its boring you? try to finish it anyway. boredom is soo healthy in this era where we are on a constant dopamin & oxytocin rush. and if you wanna avoid books that are straight up garbage, start picking books according to your taste instead of blindly following what is trending on a social media platform

  • @caricanread

Idk if you didnt practice your own “get thru something boring” and chose not to watch this video but more than half of these books were dnfed because of outstanding circumstances not boredom lol

Always here for a random Throne in the Dark appreciation moment lol BTW, since you agree with Leoni usually, guess what? Pretty sure she didn't like Assistant To The Villain as well and she posted a video about it! BTW number 2: Yesterday I finished Not Another Vampire Book by Cassandra Gannon and, damn, it's perfect for a reading slump that needs a stupidly funny, chaotic, unhinged story! And it's on KU😉

Honestly, for people who liked Six of Crows, a very adult series to read is the Gentleman's Bastards by Scott Lynch. Honestly, was annoyed reading it after SoC how many things feel a little too on the nose taken directly from it by Bardugo. I do think SoC goes its own way eventually though, but some of the vibes and details seem far too inspired by. As much as I still enjoy SoC, I do think Lies of Locke Lamora is superior.

I really relate to your comment about feeling pressure when a library deadline is looming - reading when I feel like I have to read does not feel as enjoyable. I agree with other that are sharing that DNF'ing is a skill that I'm working on developing. I never used to put down any book I had started, good or bad. Up until last year, the only book I had ever DNF'ed was Hannibal Rising. Having purchased my books probably played a role in feeling like I had to finish them since I paid good money, but now that I borrow books from the library, I don't feel the same pressure to keep reading a book that's not a good fit for me. The Hating Game from Sally Thorne was the book that pushed me to get my library card. Had I not purchased this book, I would have DNF'ed it so hard.
