Hello I know I already mentioned this book in your previous video. And I promise after this I will never mention it again well at least not for a very very long while like potentially a year or two. But if you want to read a good book I suggest you read under the udala trees by Chinelo oparonta I know I am spelling that name very incorrectly. The book is written by a Nigerian author, it's about a young woman growing up in Nigeria during the Nigerian Civil War and on top of dealing with the war and her father's death she also has to come to terms with her sexuality as a lesbian. This is a beautiful heartbreaking historical fiction novel about a young Nigerian woman trying to blend into Nigerian society while also trying to gain acceptance from her mother and herself. While also dealing with for the Nigerian Civil War and the death of her father.

the fact that colleen hoover wrote a book about her mom, with the idea that "if i get out of this abusive relationship, my daughter won't continue the cycle", only to then make it her entire career to write abusive, toxic romances that are portrayed as desirable just... tells me everything i need to know about her.

I don't think she's a hypocrite, I think she is lacking in self-awareness. I don't think she even realizes that she still has a toxic mentality. It's sad but her own deep-seated issues are so problematic and she needs to be responsible and get more therapy. People think they are fixed because they become aware of the root cause of their problems. But this is like knowing the equation exists but not knowing how to solve it. You don't actually know anything useful. Hypocrisy requires that she understands why what she's writing is problematic and publishes it anyway. I don't think she even sees what's contradictory because her understanding of healthy relationships is so warped.

I also read It Ends With Us for the first time in May of this year (mind you, in a single day). And honestly, growing up in an abusive household myself and seeing my mom get abused in a similar way to Lily's mother, the book struck a tender cord in my heart. I felt like I could relate to it (especially Lily's character) a lot, and I even had my mom reader it after I finished - she really liked it as well. THAT BEING SAID- I agree with you 100%!!! I really hated how Ryle wasn't even dealt with properly in the end. Lily just accepted that he'd have to be in her and her daughter's life forever and it's like, GURL- take him to court!!! He physically hurt you on multiple occasions!!! I was hoping that he would go to jail at the end of the book or get a punishment along those lines, but alas, CoHo chose to keep him as a pity case. He seriously faced no consequences in the end: he still got to see the 'woman that he loved soo much 🥴), he got to be apart of his daughters life, and he got to keep his job. Like, okay Ryle, your life was hard and you killed your brother but I'm not about to pity you when you're literally abusing your wife like wtf??? I hated the way that CoHo dealt with Ryle because it absolutely burns me up when abusers don't get what they deserve. Anyways, I ended up reading the sequel and it was even MORE maddening because THE BOOK WAS STILL ABOUT RYLE!!! Hello?! It was marketed as an Atlas and Lily love story, and then it turned into Ryle's shit-show once agaiin. I literally couldn't, last book I read by CoHo. 😭

I also grew up in an abusive household. In my situation, nothing was dealt with either. I went in not knowing the trigger warnings, so most of the book was really hard to read. A lot of the details hit close to home. Especially when Ryle's sister was trying to defend him. Immediately after reading it, I thought it was good because it felt real. I have only read two Colleen Hoover books, so I can't defend her. That being said, the abuse in this book makes me sick, and I wish Ryle had been dealt with. Cause if you start the book thinking that it’s just a romance novel, you start off falling in love with the abuser alongside her, which messes up with your head later on when you’re supposed to hate him. I was quite confused as to what I was reading and why it’s been so popular. I was waiting for a deep spiritual and emotional healing to take place for the characters. Do I enjoy CoHo’s writing style? Yes. But after reading ‘All Your Perfects’ (thoroughly enjoyed) and jumping into this, I felt extremely confused at the maturity level the characters displayed and their way to properly heal and move forward from whatever struggles they were facing. I had only read two other CoHo books (Verity and Reminders of Him) before this one, and none of them like, blew me out of the water, so I was excited to finally get IEWU off of the library hold shelf to see what's so great about it. I thought it might lighten my opinion of CoHo because I was feeling kind of book snobby. Unfortunately, I had no idea about the DV narrative before picking it up (somehow missed that spoiler) and was upset that, at least on my copy, there were no warnings on the text anywhere. I read it last week and have been chewing on it since. I didn't love it and the resolution fell flat for me. The author's note didn't really do much for me. I agree that the topic is important but I think there is a way to cover content like this....and this wasn't the best way. I actually liked "It ends with us". I was about 16 when I read it and for me it opened my eyes how relationships can be abusive and the emotional complexity of getting out of such a relationship. But especially looking back now that I'm older, I can see its faults, it still holds a special place in my heart though. However! A friend of mine, 22 years old, has been in a relationship for like 2 or 3 years. She has recently read this book and told me she thought it unfair that Ryan did not get another chance from Lily. Like he could have attended therapy and gotten better and everything might have been fine. I lost it. I saw red. Like no no no. I told her why that would have been very bad, but I don't know if she understood

I just remember the scene from It ends with us at the beginning of their relationship when he doesn't take his scrubs off from working as a doctor in the hospital and she thought that it was sexy🤮 , like no, that is gross and no real doctor would take all the germs on that thing home with him. I couldn't root for the relationship after that and when he started to abuse her I was totally done.

I totally agree with you on It Ends With Us. One other thing, mostly due to tiktok, is that it's pretty much marketed as a romance book. I went into the book thinking that it was and I saw so many people online talking about and romantizing Atlas(? whatever his name was) to the point that it really kinda shadows the whole message the author was trying to portray. Before I read it, I saw no one taking about the main purpose of the book or any mention of DV at all so I think that a lot of other people are also going into the book thinking that it's just romance with a side of angst and domestic issue or something instead of something even somewhat serious

I think for me I ended up really relating to It Ends With Us, I grew up in an abusive house hold, I saw my mother go through it, who saw her mother go through it, and then it even hit my little sister and I saw her relationship play out EXACTLY like my mom and dad's, it was scary and uncanny. I truly believe that the cycle is an actual thing and we are drawn to things we see our parents like and do, same thing with drugs and alcoholism. Which is why I ended up feeling like the book was written for me, as tragic as it is, because yeah my dad maybe a good dad and yes he was definitely abusive towards my mother and no my mom didn't leave him, and no I don't hate him, I can't it's a really weird place to be in, my father isn't really that extreme as ryle ofc, but it's still no excuse and idk it's overall a weird spot to be in once you're in that situation. Though I agree with you, Colleen Hoover made it TOOO easy for ryle, he didn't deserve our pity and he didn't deserve to be let off the hook, also breaking the cycle is WAAYYY harder than what is showed, I agree it was simplified. And it doesn't mean that lily's daughter won't ever get into an abusive relationship, it's just that she won't grow up seeing her mother go through it.

I think It Ends With Us is really written for people who have been through that kind of abuse. I thought the abusive partner was written that way because that's how abuse victims feel. If they were just pure evil it would be very easy to walk away, but that's not the case usually. Usually the toxic person in your life is also really great sometimes. Books are not always prescriptive of how things should be, sometimes they are just a story for people to relate to, and I don't think I've ever related to a book more than that one.

I completely agree with you about IEWU. This is further proven by the fact that there are many CoHo fans who say they liked her abusive husband and wished she ended up with him. That just goes to show that CoHo did not do a good job of correctly portraying him as the abuser he is, he should have suffered SOME kind of consequence for his actions.

As a ghostwriter I can tell you that those sequels, trilogy, and up. The reason the tone changes and the story has a different connotation is because 9/10 you don't use the same ghostwriter. It can be for a number of things. Most ghostwriters don't know how to mimic the tone of a previous GW to keep the other books going. They tend to use their own tones and guidelines. Most of your "Authors" really don't care enough to read the work when they switch GWs.

@@leanykakicsi6152 no. There are NDAs in place to prevent the GW from even speaking about it. It is very legal as long as the GW isn't plagiarizing someone elses work. But that is also on the "Author" to check for errors, direction, plagiarism, tone etc.

To be honest, I liked It ends with us. I understood why she didn't do anything about Ryle: it's the most common situation, women usually do not take their abusers to court and she still felt something for him (I'm not saying she's right, just that I understand her situation). I have an alcoholic father who was never violent, but he almost took my family to bankruptcy three times already and my mom still could not leave him (and I still live with them, even if I have the means to go away). Like, it's really hard to leave people behind, even if you don't love them anymore. There's a lot of emotional abuse in my home, but I've chosen to stay to make sense of who I am in the midst of it all and learn how to deal with the situation, so I don't judge Lily for wanting her daughter to have a father. Still, she should have pressed charges and she does get better at defending herself in the second book. And yes, the second book is still technically about Ryle, but it's so real! You cannot just shake an abuser off of your life! And she still had a lot of triggers. It was good to see her trying to let go of those learnt behaviours and learn how to be happy with Atlas.

With it ends with us, I don’t think the message is that if you leave your toxic relationship, the chances of ur kids being in one lowers. I think it’s more like, Lilly accepted what Ryler? Riker? What ever his name was. She found it easier to accept his abuse because her mom accepted her dad’s abuse and she later understood why her mother never left the relationship. By Lily making the choice to leave HER toxic relationship, she makes it easier for her daughter to also leave a toxic relationship if she ever finds herself in one. She sets an example of what the right thing to do is for her daughter. The cycle of accepting abuse ends. (Or at least lowers)

I enjoyed reading It End’s With Us, mostly because it reminded me of the books I read in high school that got me into reading. (Very simple, easy read, yearn-y esq) But I do agree with your opinion about it. As someone who has been in an abusive relationship I understand completely the whole “I don’t want to ruin his life” POV and it is completely valid, but I also think it is very important for other survivors to see more people report things like this because it reassures them that it is okay to do. Especially the whole Marshall and Alyssa relationship she had. Them supporting her but pretending like nothing happened when being with Ryle alone also was very weird to me. However I am completely in love with atlas and I really enjoyed the mundane simplicity of Atlas and Lily’s relationship in it starts with us. Hated that Ryle was still such a huge part of the second book though. So much so I just want her to write a story where he is gone and it’s just lily and atlas living their best live.

About the last book, I think it'd be cool if it were a fantasy. Like imagine if the dad and his buddies found a magical disappearing town. They put it on a map n stuff. Somehow the mom gets trapped in said town and they lose the map and now they can't find the her or the town. And the dad manages to find the map again but he gets killed before he can use it. So then it's about the mc and the college buddies going on a mission to find a magical nonexistent town and save the mom. I think it would be neat if it were also one of those stories where the past unfurls with the present so it's like you get 2 stories in one. Maybe the dad was the only one that saw the town too so the college buddies don't quite believe it was real and they think he lied about what happened to his wife but since he died trying to get the map they're like "okay, we gotta see this through."

I felt the third book, while still enjoyable, was a big dip in quality. I absolutely adored the first two books and was constantly recommending them to people because I think they’re so underrated. It felt like a very rich world with a great cast of characters. I think part of the problem is how the third book splits everyone up. The university setting of The Black Witch and The Iron Flower worked so well, and I wish we could’ve stayed there longer. It sucks because I think about this series all the time, but I might just have to take your advice and let it go… SIGH

I always like your videos about books and your opinions on it because you are very honest talking about them and even though I haven't read the books I almost always agree with you when it's about books I've at least heard about (like Crave; even before watching your video on it I knew I wasn't going to read it and you just confirmed what I already felt about it... :D ). A few of my worst reads of the year are Blood Scion (I honestly disliked the book and thought to dnf it because it was torture to read for me; not because of the topics and themes but because of the plot itself), The Atlas Six (it felt less like a novel and more of a collection of philosophical ideas and scientific theories), some german books I don't want to mention because I feel like they aren't worth the effort and last but not least: Legendborn. I picked it up because of your review and I really liked and like the basic idea of the book but I just could not stand Bree. She does not care about anyone else, does everything she can to get what she wants no matter who is going to suffer because of it and she becomes way too powerful to be a believable character who could - in theory - be beaten. Sel is the only character I could stand and even like a little but all in all the book was just too much with a protagonist who was very hard to like.

I don't like it when people say that this "Hate Colleen Hoover" bandwagon is anything new. People have ALWAYS hated her books from the very beginning. It's not new that people hate her writing style, her characters, her lack of nuance, her messages, and the fact that ALL of her books are about abuse. There is nothing wrong with hating on her and her books and it's NOT a new thing/ It's not a hate bandwagon, it's a ship that has been sailing for years. It's just that now she gets a lot more attention and more people read her books and realize she's a despicable person and her books are a representation of that.

Re: The Demon Tide -- I'm so glad to hear someone talking about this. I LOVED the first 3 books in The Black Witch series. I came out of the 4th book actually feeling insulted lol. When I went to Good Reads at the time, I was seeing tons of 4 or 5 star ratings and I thought I was crazy. The whole book felt like self indulgent filler from the author. I honestly wouldn't have minded if the plot didn't advance too much, if the book would have just focused on the few characters we already knew and THEIR relationships. Instead, I read 700 pages filled with like 20 new insignificant characters and their archs -- which I had been given no prior reason to care about. It was so strange, I actually found I would try to skip ahead past these random characters' POV's, and when I would go to skip ahead (mind you, I had already invested in 500 pages so I was just fed up by this point) -- I remember skipping through so many pages of meaninglessness that I actually started laughing and getting angry that the author actually had expected me to read all of that.

Oh my god! The mother plot in the cartographers was so similar to the plot of How to Train your Dragon 2 lol!!

You should definitely review this woven kingdom. I just read it and LOVED it. Especially the word building, the main character. It's slow burn but I liked that it gave me the anticipation feeling, let me get into all my feelings and under standing of the characters.

I READ BOOK 5 Charm of the crave series, about what happened between Grace and Hudson it was fun and better than the two previous books, one more in the spring. Now on to the 3rd book in the Discovery of Witches series.

I tried to read It Ends With Us, but put it down after the first chapter. I really did not like the writing personally, it felt very young while dealing with very intense subjects. From what you’ve said, it sounds like I dodged the bullet. Not for me, it’s a shame because it is EVERYWHERE and it’s always recommended. I do kind of want to read Crave 😅

I’m so glad I’m not the only person who loved the black witch series so much, especially the first and second book, and was so disappointed by the demon tide. It wrecked my excitement for the next book too

The black witch series is one of my favorites!! Iv seen almost no one talk about it. But I really thought it would wrap up after book three or four, I can’t believe there’s going to be a fifth… like wrap it up already

your description of stalking jack the ripper feels extremely similar to kingdom of the wicked, which makes sense since they're from the same author. i had to stop reading kingdom of the wicked at the third book because of the sheer amount of smut and the total disregard for the plot haha. the story was just so hard for me to follow even since the first book, it felt like a bunch of loosely related events strung together by enemies to lovers subplot
