It was kinda sci-fi so a Recommendation: "The Wayward Pines Trilogy ". Give it a shot it is a psychological thriller + sci-fi fantasy + good philosophical thinking......I fell in love with Blake Crouch after that!

I'm gonna need a book where naive girl falls for the boy, until she has some worldy experience herself, then they break up because she realises he's not actually that great and was even kinda creepy because he liked her partly because of the power imbalance, and then he becomes a minor villain for the rest of the series

There is a book called "The Black Cloud" by the famous astronomer Fred Hoyle, in which astronomers first noticed a large black object approaching the Earth because it was blotting out the stars. They tried to keep their knowledge a secret from governments to avoid terrorising the world's population. The book not only has engaging characters and a superb plot, but is based on real physics. The approaching black object is not a black hole but an alien life form.

Honestly from what you've described, the story should've been darker, with her knowing in the back of her mind that no matter what connections she makes, it won't matter because only she will survive (and maybe the goal to "save the world" is talking about warning the other planet because this one is too late to be saved) but the audience doesn't know that etc. OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT RIGHT??

Yeah like she isn't supposed to fall in love and make connections but ends up falling for the guy that would've been cool along with actual clear scientific knowledge I feel like this book couldn't keep up with itself like it couldn't embrace it's own plot if that makes sense it's a shame

When you finally got to the plot twist I actually laughed out loud like “wtf?” I totally get you, the potential was there but literally nothing happens.

I’m pretty sure it was her covid book. I’ve read a lot of books written during lockdown and it seems like editing wasn’t really happening in 2020-2021.

Aside from the ... _extremely questionable_ black hole science going on, I think the best thing this book could have done just from your description is to put the twist at the front of the book. That way you can get the drama out of the reader being confided in the real goal of "there is only one seat on this spaceship" and then watching Vega trying to keep this a secret from the others and struggle in her self-justification as to how she can abandon these people. I think this is a big weakness these kinds of plot twists run into over and over again - you value the shock of the twist over telling a good story. Keeping this kind of information from the audience just hurts the stakes. The only explanation too I can think of regarding the time travel at the end is using the black hole's massive amounts of gravity to travel through spacetime warping. But I've only ever heard of this kind of time travel about being able to go forward rather than backward (essentially the closer you get to a black hole, then the slower time seems to you). Not sure how that's going to help our girl except by going so far forward in time everyone's forgotten your big fuck up :)

What’s funny is that consumption is the old word for tuberculosis, which was historically associated with vampires because of how it made people wither away (like they were being consumed by something). So vampires would have made a lot more sense, actually. (I am losing it at this book’s black hole logic. I am going to pass away. I am crossing the event horizon, let it consume me. My brain hurts too much.)

[SPOILERS] I haven’t read the book, but after watching this video I feel like it would have been better if the readers knew the entire time that Vega was looking for a spaceship and it only had one seat. There still could have been a twist with the black hole and them not being on Earth but have it make more sense. Then it could have been a mental battle the entire book where she feels herself falling for Noah but she knows there’s only one seat in the ship and that could’ve established their relationship more because she would be trying not to fall for him but wouldn’t be able to help herself

Does she mean actual consumption, like TB, or is this one of those noun to proper noun things that a lot of YA does? Cuz if it is tuberculosis and the mom isn't quarantined, there's absolutely no way the MC wouldn't be infected

I think she just use it because 1. Theyre being consumed by a black hole and 2. People called TB consumption because it was before we knew what was causing the illness and in the book no one knew the cause either. But i agree it’s confusing 🥲

Ouch, that's not how black holes work. That was very painful to listen to. She could have at least ditched the black hole idea and instead make it some lovecraftian alien creature that devours stars and planets. That would have been a cool plot twist.

I think one of the wildest aspects is, as you mentioned in the beginning, this entire story takes place in 2-4 weeks. So Vega falls just soooo deeply in love with Noah in maybe a couple weeks. As well, the un-killable dad is at one point stabbed multiple times? But is able to walk if off in, what, a couple days or something?

[SPOILERS] It sounds like it could have been so good if her misadventure had been maybe the first half of the book and the next half (instead of being a potential sequel plot) had been her trying to save the planet(s).

How the mc doesn't care her Pa was probably sphagettified by a black hole lmao

I remember writing a story for a class once and people had the exact critiques that you did of this novel. My story was five pages long and I spent a total of four hours working on it. I feel like there is a parallel here

As a person about to get their bachelors in planetary science, this plot made me lose my mind 💀💀💀

That was genuinely a cool twist; it’s such a shame that it was executed poorly.

The way you explained the plot got me thinking that this would honestly been a great dystopian series. If it took time to work on the characters and the mystery it would make a perfect series I’d 100% watch.

I would offer The Other Side of the Sky by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner as an alternative. I can’t remember if you’ve read it already. It’s a duology. I remember really enjoying it. It has a lot of similar elements

the structure problems should have been caught so much earlier. like I don't know if this author plans her books, but even if you have the idea for the twist and then conceptualise how it would actually go in the novel you might notice 90% of the book becomes filler. it has a simple fix too! just move the twist up in the timeline, make part of the reveal be a first or second act twist or something. that way theres actual stakes and less of an info dump.

I love your book rants 😅 I’m currently writing my own novel, and I always stop when introducing a new, kinda crazy idea to the story and wonder: what would Cari think about this? Is it genius? Or just stupid? 😅

Somehow when you said black hole I knew that there was going to be time travel, especially with the way she had to leave. My favorite author went from amateur level writing, to some of the best books I have ever read, to you can tell that she was only writing because she was forced to by her publisher. It was really sad to see her writing go down hill. At one time there was a long waiting list for her books, and now no one really talks about her.

That planets at 33:27 moving in the background are so trippy!

One thing I want to add: pls know that all of your videos are a blast to watch! I personally think that you dont have to be comedian funny all the time - i enjoy a critical rant as much as a rant like the rant of the zodiac academy. Your videos are never boring and i always enjoy watching them!

This book suggesting that chemistry and physics developed before astronomy is wild. Every science related thing that Cari mentions about this book is wrong? Inaccurate? Just wrong enough to ping my brain and bother me? That last one for sure at the very least. I'm glad Cari touches on this at the end.

Why not spend the 100 years looking for the ocean or preparing? Why would earth and humans with the ability to traverse the stars send colonies to planets near black holes? 🥴

Wah, I have more. Why tattoo the astronomer when they know they'll be hunted? Why did her mother and others die but not Vega and the rest? It can't be age because the old architect didn't die from it nor did Noah's father. What exactly is the black hole doing to cause consumption? Why was there only one ship under the sand? What happened to the others or did the entire colony grow from a few dozen people?!

this book sounds like it could be so good! so much potential! i am a writer for personal pleasure so i understand coming up with something super cool and wanting to share it but… the super cool part can only reach its potential if the rest of the story is fully fleshed out. (also i’ll recommend the Bone Witch series and the Last Namsara series. hope they meet expectations i remember loving them but i also haven’t read them in a good while)

Not sure if there will be a second book, but my guess for the twist of that book would be that Vega goes back in time and creates a causality loop to lead herself to Noah via the prophecy.

That sounds like someone who has not even the slightest idea how black holes work, they do not appear as shadows and the gravitation would be the thing everybody would notice. And that is not the only problem with astrophysics there, like the 100 years until certain stars return is complete nonsense.

I love listening to your voice. I hope you don’t take this wrong, but even if you’re talking about something that doesn’t strictly interest me, I love listening to you. Your voice is so soothing, gentle and stable, I love it ❤

wait but....... if she knew the black hole was going to swallow the planet and she knew she had to get to the spaceship and she knew the whole plan the entire time........... why wait until the last possible second??? why does this have to be secret knowledge passed down through generations until the two special stars appear?? like why not just grab the architect head to the sea and get going immediately, before the black hole even becomes a problem?? are the two stars actually the other planet and it's only now that they've got a clear shot?? am i missing something

​@@jasminv8653 LITERALLY???? the rules are so arbitrary! and i know this video is a summary of the book and we might be missing something but from what i can tell there isn't even like an overarching religion or belief system or even a central government of sorts that could be concealing this information for ~evil~ reasons. it's just the astronomers, keeping a LITERAL WORLD-ENDING SECRET and not doing diddly squat about it for years with pretty much no good explanation. if the theme is how Forgetting the Knowledge of the Past Will Doom Us it doesn't track because no one made any real effort to disseminate the truth to the rest of the population at any point. I AM BEFUDDLED

I have some difficulty reading books, but I still love to know more stories, this kind of videos are so entertaining to me, even if they're not meant to be funny, it's just like someone telling me a story and I love it

It's the fact that people who made it off of Earth and to an entirely different planet somehow only had one astronomer onboard for me😭 And that a ship with a single seat was made in the first place?? Stahp it, Vega wasn't the only one unprepared🙄

Thank you for saving me a lot of time. I had my doubts about this book for so long, so I put it off. After watching this video, I went to my Goodreads and clicked "delete from shelves" so fast. Probably had more fun listening to your rant than I would've had reading this book

Hey, great video! I am actually an astrophysicist so the black hole physics sounds absolutely insane 😅 i have SO many questions: - why is the black hole making them sick? It is an immense amount of gravity, it doesnt spread disease - how do the oceans evaporate off? That implies the atmosphere would have to be gone but they clearly are still talking and have air?? - if they were that close to a black hole, surely the oceans would be Wild, like constant sweeping tsunami wild - How is Vega able to escape the swell of the black hole and get to the other colony so quickly? There should have been a whole lot of funky time anomalies that close toa. black hole In summary, it sounds like this author watched interstellar, did not pay attention, and just cherry picked random parts of the story 🤦🏻‍♀️ My other gripe is that if you wanted to have a sickness caused by some astrophysical phenomena, the author should have gone with the star going giant esrlier than thought. The star would probably be habing crazy emission spikes and making people sick andas the star would swell, there would be some nasty weather on t pplanet which surely would have resulted in the same teist of them not being on earth?? But I guess you dont habe the get out of jail free card that 'going back in time' to get the love interest 🙄

I'm with your friend: if that was done properly, this book could be epic. The surreal atmosphere, the quiet, hopeless tone... all leading up to that!? It could be eerily beautiful in the hands of another author.

I liked it. I got the book for Christmas. It was my first physical book for ages. Tried out a new idea for origami bookmarks on it. It has my favourite trope : outrunning a collapsing world. If I remember correctly the consumption was from a cloud of dark matter surrounding the black hole rather than the black hole itself.

As always, I had a lot of fun listening to you! I just have one question: why do they have to wait for the two stars? Is there a reason why they can't get immediately to the ship?

Thanks for this review, as enamored as I am with The Wicked Deep i would've bought this one as well ! Happy to save money waiting Earnshaw's next story
