    @@jordinagel1184 facts. this is the reason i'm willing to listen to a book summary for entertainment, but not actually buy the series and become invested into the story - i hate when characters get this kind of disrespectful treatment. i much prefer the 'right person, wrong time' plot where the first pairing tragically can't be together due to circumstances, with no asshole-ification involved. but even a 'good 2nd lead becomes evil' can be written sooo much better. i once watched this kdrama focused on a bromance between a korean ml who works for the the japanese police during the japanese occupation and looks down on his own countrymen, and a japanese 2nd ml who sympathizes with the koreans. they both fall in love with the same girl, and as the story progresses, we witness the ml's redemption arc as the 2nd ml is overcome with greed and becomes corrupted and power hungry. everything was well fleshed out, the focus wasn't even on the romance, and the character trajectories were extremely satisfying

    I feel like this book actually had themes I'd like to see more in fantasy - a very young woman (19) questioning whether immediate marriage is right for her despite her head over heels fairytale romance, how even a loving relationship can become toxic or abusive when the power dynamic is unhealthy, how PTSD can completely destroy any hope of normalcy and intimacy because romance doesn't fix trauma, the fuckery being immortal would do to one's mental health (especially for a human, who's literally lost their identity and species, and may never be able to return to her family because of it) and how being perpetually stuck at an age where your brain isn't done developing, your hormones are raging and you've barely had any time to figure out your own goals and identity could be less than ideal. I could genuinely see that being a really good, tragic, heartbreaking story of two people growing apart, struggling with the responsibilities of the court, political drama, the juxtaposition of being at the physically strongest she's ever been in her life and the mentally and emotionally weakest she could possibly be. Unfortunately, the author was more preoccupied with smut and her own ships than actually exploring those themes well and doesn't have the skill anyway, so we got this instead lol. She clearly tried SO hard to 180 and make Tamlin a super bad guy, but most of the time he's acting very reasonably considering the situation at hand, while Feyre is both uneducated and uncaring of the risks involved and just wants to be the protagonist who gets everything she wants as soon as she wants it. Not that she should have stayed with him, but a lot of the time, it really seem like the traumatized pot calling the PTSD kettle black.

    It’s always bugged me that Feyre is allowed to have PTSD but not Tamlin. She does such a good job with Feyre too, like I could relate to the feeling of being too tainted for something like live and marriage, and to the way it feels like life revolving around you without your participation. And yet with Tamlin his PTSD is demonized from the start. Yes his actions at the end were awful, but Farrah NEVER took the time to communicate with him!!

    ACOMAF: How To Commit Character Assassination in Under 700 Pages. For realsies, though, one thing that always bothers me about Sara J. Maas's writing is that her characters are either evil or they're not. And sometimes you think they're evil, but actually, they're the most perfect person in creation (Rhys), or you think they're great, but actually, they're terrible and deserve nothing but endless misery (Tam). She's gotten a bit better at instilling grey areas in Nesta's book, but then again, in redeeming Nesta, she nerfed Feyra and Rhys as characters...soooo, I guess she didn't, actually. Welp!

    I really liked these books in high school, but hindsight made me realize how strange/problematic/other descriptor they could be. Kinda spoiler: Yes, Tamlin did treat Feyre horribly, etc etc. But in this book, and a lot in the next, it becomes a theme to brush aside/make fun of Tamlin's PTSD just because his PTSD turned him to being creepily protective over Feyre. Yes, what he did was horrible. But this man needed therapy, needed to learn how to be okay with himself and not cling desperately onto the person he loves to their relationship's detriment. It's actually a realistic PTSD response, all things considered. It just wasn't addressed and handled in a way that would be for the better of Feyre, Tamlin, and the reader. That being said, Rhysand is still my favorite. Oops.

    He does, thats sad as he easy could have gotten that he realizes his ptsd doe harm her an that they cant go on and that he needs to find himself and deal with his stuff, and doesnt even need to, they could stay friends in a way. An it could be as draatic as real things are without needing a bad guy. Something something he realized he became the monater and it was not th curse, an she couldnt help him with that , he needed to help himself and face his demons, no matter hoe long it took, thil the, they needed to seperate, as much as it hurts. And just jet him go out on a good note. That the just went seoperate ways and that they have enough drama already. Like have a downwards spiral and realizing that they need distance, with the exploding he does. And that to help her and himself, he first had to let her go and they care for themselves?! Like he isnt a monster, and he should be really be bette and be just a traumatized person that realizes they cant be coependent and neglected , and grow apart. While getting on with rhysand slowly whol they. Ther are ways to sho healthy real daling and big drama.

    So, I have a theory about why Sarah is describing everyone as the most beautiful. Majority of the book is from Feyre's point of view. She has pretty low self esteem. She thinks everyone is more talented, more essential, more important, and more beautiful than her. So that being said SHE thinks everyone is the most beautiful she's ever seen, not necessarily Sarah herself. Just a thought.

Yes, they have scarlet lips and an hourglass figure and hair like a starless night, but that tells us nothing about their character or position in life. We already know that they're fae and that they're impossibly beautiful. Give us an interesting tidbit, something that makes them stand out as a character.

    @@kekelottas A lot of us felt SJM did not do a particularly well-written or nuanced depiction of Tamlin's turn as an increasingly abusive partner. For a lot of people, it very much felt like she decided she had a bigger hard-on for Rhysand, and made him nauseatingly superior (oh, he's the most beautiful man, he's the best lover, he's the most powerful high lord ever, his court is so much prettier, he's a better ruler, he's constantly saying "It's your CHOICE Feyre," Rhys rules while Tamlin drools) despite the fact that Rhys has done plenty of fucked-up, controlling shit with almost 0 self-awareness shown from SJM about it.

  • @petloverspy

    @petloverspy

    10 ай бұрын

    @@danawalter259 That’s the shit that gets me. So many people say oh but Tamlin’s traits were foreshadowed, what he did was inexcusable, he doesn’t deserve therapy, but many of those people won’t stop excusing Rhys’ also horrific actions. Both of them had valid explanations for their behavior which I agree shouldn’t be *excuses* but I can’t stand the pedestal Rhys gets put on while Tamlin gets villified - THAT is why it feels like the author just decided Rhys was hotter and to go for him instead. Tamlin’s behavior in book 2 also probably wouldn’t have shocked as many if his Book 1 overprotectiveness and mildly condescending nature wasn’t *basically the norm for YA lover interests.* A shitty norm but a norm nonetheless. I COULD believe that SJM wanted to show people that this behavior is actually a red flag, except I’m pretty sure she writes plenty of other love interests like this where it’s supposed to be romantic. So no, I don’t think this was clever foreshadowing and subversion, I think this was genuine character assassination and making light of his PTSD. Feyra shouldn’t be stuck with either of these dudes and this bullshit, these people all need to work on fixing themselves first before they make it more complicated.

    It’s so weird how SJM can like hit big important character traits and dynamics in a good way…. and then it all gets negated by her inability (or struggle) to keep a conscise plot line. Especially in the new HoSaB, but also in ACOTAR series where it kinda seems like she’s figuring out the plot as she goes and cares more about the romance aspects. She’s not an awful writer, but she could be more clear about what’s going on.

    This is book where I wanted to set fire to the fact I had to buy this. I hated this book, because the first while it had its issues, actually had a story to it that was outside Sarah’s usual nonsense. Then she had a hard on for her own character Rhysand, made people think that molesting a naked woman he drugged to the point she couldn’t remember her lap dancing in front of an entire country of people was, “for her own good and protection”. I’m sorry wtf what????????????? I was disgusted by this books retconning, making a SA survivor relive her assault in front of a court that hates her and “like it”…and yet have her be upset someone wants to keep her safe from the man who did it to her????? The man who twisted her arm when it was broken with her bone sticking out to force a bargain with her???? Ew ew ew renew ew ew. Tamlin in book 1 is supposed to be a sensitive character, who writes poems, loves his people despite not wanting to rule, cried over that broken faerie, was saddened by Rhysand sending a head of his court people to his doorstep and yet somehow, he becomes what he becomes. I hate this book. I hate this series in vernal but this book is where it starts. And then the series just gets worse. That said I LOVE YOUR VIDS IDK HOW YOU DO THIS WITH THAT SMOOTH ANGELIC VOICE OF YOURS. To think i could laugh while listening to a recap of one of if not the worst book I’ve ever read? I love you.

Upon 3rd listen (0 reads; haven’t even touched a cover), I think it’s also important to acknowledge that Tamlin spent all of ACOTAR constructing a situation in which Feyre falls in love with him. All the little snippets she “overheard” him and Lucien discussing, the crumbs of tragic backstory, etc.

    Wait, I don't think that was the goal in the first book. The "overhearing" information was a way for her to figure out the curse and why they can't speak about it. The tragic backstory was just that, a part of his backstory, that he didn't elaborate. He didn't even mention how they died or who was responsible, not to mention he even said that his father and brothers deserved it. I honestly believe that everything we learned in this book about rhys and tamlins families was just a way to villainize tamlin and victimize rhysand.

    This is so great because I get to understand all the TT videos and references without trying to struggle through SJM's writing style. You're delivery style is hilarious btw, i love it so much.

    OMG these books carried me through 11th grade when I was super depressed- I read them and reread them and decorated my whole room on the style of the night court. And these recaps make me so unbelievably happy
