At 8:40 I mention that "people who talk about the sanctitiy of the lore are casual fans" [sic] This is in reference to the recent deluge of content creators that have jumped on top of the whole female Custodes - many of them having no previous relationship with warhammer, no idea about the lore, but still using the "sanctity of the lore" as a bludgeon to complain about Games Workshop when if they were actual fans of the franchise and had been following it for a while, they'd know that retcons are very common place in Warhammer and that the lore often changes. This isn't about people who are just into Warhammer lore and reading the books etc. Obviously you can be a fan of warhammer that only engages with it via reading the books and following the lore. I know there's plenty of people out there who do so - many because the miniatures are so expensive, and I often argue on this channel that price keeps a lot of fans out of trying the wargame (and this is a major problem actually). That all said, the actual meat of Warhammer has always been the war game and the miniatures at the heart of it.

It seems like a lot of people are jumping down your throat in this one, so let me say that I do think you make good points. You’re absolutely right, GW makes retcons all the time. But I do think that retcons big and small should either serve the narrative or should be avoided. Making Custodes female seems to me to be pretty innocuous. I don’t think it will really change much at all nor come into play outside of getting new female Custodes models which sounds cool.

I’ll stand by what I said: All retcons should be avoided whenever possible. This one included is unnecessary. I simply feel it’s a small retcon.

But with decades of lore talking about the Astartes being all male due to their zygotes being gene-coded to male only, it would be a much larger retcon. And honestly this could be GW testing the waters. if they want more diversity moving forward you can bet they’ll think twice the way this Custodes retcon has gone over with the community.

Now what counts for the faceless GW design studio is profit. Like GW had a strong aspect of profit-seeking which was used by people who were passionate about the lore to have careers. I mean I lapsed playing table top longer than many fans, including this uploader have been into the hobby. Started back when your pocket money would buy you a diecast model blister or box of plastic at the local hobby shop or GW store, my life moved on from being able to play and then when I could GW went insane with the prices and I would still have to travel to find somewhere to play so I read books and play video games. I have early to mid 90s models for 40k and Epic 40k floating around in my horde of junk I filled my home with over the years, but because its been more than 25 years since I rolled a dice apparently I don't matter. Warhammer isn't for everyone it seems.

@@Tsunamiieh why not, I play through all the dawn of war games series (expect for 3), played space marine from THQ, regularly read up on the lore often, have a favorite legion (Alpha legion), engage with memes and fan projects like text to speech, had interest in playing imperial guardsmen army (respect the hell of those guys and love playing them in dawn of war) and keep an eye on the property from time to time. I may not be the biggest fan but I still have an interest in the property. Buying the minis and learning to paint them isn’t all that much of a step for me. The female custodes just kicked my interest a lot more simply because it made me think of the ip more and of how it actually enhances the setting for me more. It reinforces my fondness for emperor despite his flaws.

They are designed to win tournaments via the Meta similarly to Imperial Knights, however they were simply just a top dog army, which basically meant playing melee in 40k if you weren't Custodes was impossible.

Yes yes there are female Space Marines in Rogue Trader but I would say 80% of fans don't even remember that. First off Space Dwarves known as Squats existed in early 40k. Even after fans were told they were "Eaten by Tyranids" they were still sort of referenced in the lore as the Space dwarves existed as the Demiurg which still roamed the galaxy. Many alien races are vaguely referenced or discussed in lore and not fully fleshed out because the important events and narratives take precedence. Finally if you have been a 40k fan and been involved with the hobby for decades there are still fans that asked GW if the Squats would return because they were not satisfied with their removal. The agenda in question consists in part of an obsession over representation of just about anything, an attitude which many fear will ruin the hobby in the long run, over years' worth of changes. You could certainly argue this is a slippery slope argument, but we've seen it happen in other fandoms, so concern is warranted. Adding female custodes is not the agenda itself, it is merely testing the waters, and so the many respond with a "Don't give them an inch" strategy.

There's a few reasons why the fans are mad. And no, it's not because they hate women. We now know that this change is connected to the upcoming show. Though Henry Cavil is at the helm of creative direction, the main entities are Games Workshop and Amazon Studios. Amazon does not feel like they can achieve success from a show character belonging to the Sisters of Silence. Hence, the name, they dont talk much. The sisters of battle are "too religious" and they believe that will also turn off viewers(all 10 of them that give a crap!). They've debated using a female inquisitor, but similar issues arose. This is where randomly adding a female custodes or two has come it. Either directly or indirectly requested by amazon, they ultimately required a suitable female lead character. Thus Games Workshop gave them a couple. The outrage comes from further broken trust and we thus start down a path that end badly. Financially speaking of course.

@@nathanjora7627 I take it with a grain of salt, but it feels consistent with other situations involving Amazon studios and the way Henry has handled the Witcher situation. So maybe instead of a pinch, I’ll add another pinch. Could also be total BS. Sorry for phrasing it in a way that made it seem like I was trying to claim it was fact. It just seems likely. I did hear that someone involved in this situation was fired related to the tweet. Again all of this stuff are things that we hear, and the likelihood we ever know for sure may never happen. I guess we will have to see what happens. My theory is that if tensions are present in GW and this tv project, then there will be a compromise. Perhaps there weren’t always female custodies, but these are totally new creations. That’s not going to make everyone happy, but I know it’s more amiable than what the tweet suggested. Nothing from the 10th edition codex leak seems to suggest these females were there from start. Just that they exist currently.

“People who care about the lore are casual fans not real fans” explained for 5 year olds: the bigger problem in warhammer is the fact the tabletop is our real problem. It is a our real problem, ITS A MESS.

People that care about the lore are not real fans? Honestly feels dismissive, insulting, and almost purposefully antagonistic. Yes, lore changes all the time. If something happens all the time, is that automatically a good thing?

I really prefer it when our favorite things were ignored by the mainstream.

I don't want to see 40k go like DC and marvel and that's what I see going on here, I see a company that is trying to be more DEI and be a shell of a company later that no one wants.

I have to disagree about your views on lore. Lore is the only reason I got into 40k. Dont get me wrong I enjoy the game but there are a lot of (usually cheaper) games out there. The reason I chose 40k over them was purely because of the lore.

And a lot back when I started playing could be played on smaller tables as well instead of the massive tables 40k uses. So if I just wanted to "bash toys together" they would have been better options. But 40k had the best story for the armies and models an interesting living world for those armies. So I went with 40k.

Same. Without lore, it's just a pile of overpriced plastic with confusing and pretty contradictory rules. Without lore, those figurines would lose 90% of the price that people would be willing to pay for them. Not to mention books and game licenses. This is also not a small "pocket money" for GW, and without the lore it would have nothing from them. For example, in my country Warhammer books were officially sold almost a decade before the figures were officially sold here.

They could have just made up some reason like: Big E used boys and girls in the first batch and found out boys are more likely to survive and/or less resource intensive. Henceforth he only used boys after that. Femal Custodes are therefore extremely rare and almost indistinguishable from the others while in armore. But they couldn't even be bothered to do that

"The Lord's of terra are now giving their first born daughters to the custodes to help replenish their ranks. Now that many custodes are no longer stationed in terra and more casualties are being sustained in the galaxy it is of the utmost importance to preserve the 10,000" lazy writing and poorly planned pandering is the frustration. I would still prefer an expansion on sisters of silence before females in the custodian line, but if you're going to do the later do it in a way that makes sense

Amusingly; I was about to hit the Unsubscribe button after watching this. Only to find that KZread's already gone ahead and Unsubbed me by itself.

I get the impression that this controversy blew up more than others because, well... can you imagine the daily mail writing an article going "warhammer inflates the number of fictional supersoldiers in its setting by adding primaris!"? Literally all of the bigger, more important controversies have been about things so nerdy that the average person would need a crash course on 40k to even understand the problem. I don't like this change, the same as i haven't liked many before... i just wish all the others could have had this scale of backlash. might stop GW from doing things like this so often.

So let me get this straight (there is no straight in ESG and Blackrock), Sisters of Silence, who also wear golden/silver armor, badass, didn't have new models, and had a perfect opportunity for a refresh, upgrade and new lore. This is not about representation but ideological capture.

It’s much more meaningful to use an actual original black character or make a new one. It’s easy to be represented it’s hard to be represented well. The problem is not what has happened, it's how and why. I don't think anyone who has an issue with this change is ignorant of GW's penchant for retconning the lore, heck they retconned the entire Indomitus Crusade and reprinted The Dark Imperium and Plague War to reflect that change. The problem is first and foremost that this change does not feel like it has any other purpose than pushing political messaging and appealing to a DEI agenda, I don't necessarily believe the 4chan leaks about the Amazon show but I don't think it's remotely a coincidence that this change follows a partnership with a very DEI focused company like Amazon (see Rings of Power). Although I'm sure there are a few, the majority of people who dislike this change probably don't have an issue with female representation or even female super-soldiers, there are female Spartans in Halo and nobody seems to have an issue with that. It's that there does not seem to be any other reason than lazy politics for this change to have been made, there are no new products being sold, it's not a character central to some book or major storyline, it feels like another empty check box measure. Which brings us to the second issue, the how. It's one thing if (like with Stormcast Eternals) this change was launched with new models and a furtherance of the story, but a blurb in a codex just screams lazy. The twitter/x post only worsened the issue by yes gaslighting the fans, it's a tweet not a lore dump, obviously we have thirty years of lore showing no female custodians, to pretend it's always been the case is just dumb. If the account had come out and said: "yes this is a retcon, the company wishes to improve diversity and inclusion in the universe," then at least that would have been honest and up front, instead a lot of people feel belittled and talked down to by that post. That this has blown up so much is somewhat surprising to me but this does seem to have become the latest front-line in the ongoing culture war. As someone who grew up with plenty of fictional stories, books, comics and movies, showing strong female characters and characters of different races and backgrounds I have no problem with inclusion in any franchise that I am a fan of, however it is still important for characters to be well written. Audiences want well written characters who happen to be diverse, not diverse characters who have literally nothing going on under the hood. Over the last ten years I've watched nearly every franchise and story I loved growing up taken over and ruined by creatively bankrupt hacks who couldn't write a decent character or story if their lives depended on it. Star Wars, Star Trek, Terminator, Aliens, Ghostbusters, He-Man, TMNT, Avatar TLAB, Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, Willow, DC, Marvel, Halo and so many more. For years it has felt like the dystopian nightmare of Warhammer 40,000 was one of the only impenetrable bastions of fun and camp. It is very tiresome to be constantly lectured to by my entertainment and for a time 40k served as a nice escape from the constant politicization and hectoring. But like the pebble that starts a land-slide once the woke gets an inch it takes a mile and I think a lot of the critics of this change don't just see this as a Custodes issue but an act of bending the knee to political ideologues who will render 40k unrecognizable before they are done. Also personally I dislike this change on its own completely removed from any other issue because it feels like it makes the Sisters of Silence obsolete and redundant, they no longer serve as the esoteric feminine counter-part to the imposing and hyper-masculine Custodes but now exist as an unnecessary and superfluous artifact. Considering GW has given the SoS far less support than the Custodes and has consistently seemed to struggle to find a place for them in the Talons of the Emperor faction on the tabletop this feels like another nail in the SoS coffin.

No Discourse. Your focus is specifically on the models which is what games Workshop wants to say they are. Unfortunatly, they created a setting that spans all entertainment media. Books, video games, shows, films. Games Workshop think we are morons when they say they are just a model company, even though they write story after story to explain each model they sell. And at their prices, some would say they are on to something. You say Warhammer is for everyone, but you are gatekeeping. I'm not a Warhammer fan because I don't paint models and stand at a table rolling dice? Even though, I play the video games, read the books, watch the shows, consumed other products co created by Ian Livingstone like Fighting Fantasy and Hero's Quest. Who said women can't be soldiers? No one has said that. They are talking about 2 specific factions. Where both those factions have female factions to balance it out. The Custodes have the Sisters of Silence who are far more terrifying since they are all blanks. It's not the change that's the problem, it's how they did it. They just shoe horned it in and called it a day. What's wrong with writing a story about a Custodes Red Cloak who is tasked with watching over a girl, who turns out to show exceptional skills that can match the Custodes if given the proper training. You know, a hero story, the very thing that everyone loves who play any kind of fantasy game.

I agree. how they did it is the issue. If they had said Cwal was working in secret , fine. The point was totally missed when discourse mentioned the 50/50. Women are more than welcome to play 40K. People used to say the same about DnD and that was silly as we had more than 3 of a 9 player group back in the 90,s. If you check out the channels that have the most fans when growing 40K channels its the women. This is all a business move. 40K problem has always been the same, and it's simple. They need more new fans to buy anything. We only buy 1 primarch, 2 dreadnaughts, 5 tactical boxes 2 cool items and its onto the next army. Once we have gotten 3 or 4 we stop. People can play with those same models for years.

Wow. What a massive misrepresentation of why people are upset. I guess there’s a reason the straw man fallacy is so common. It’s way easier to counter an argument you want to talk about rather than the actual argument.

Its interesting to me that all this energy is spent on denying and retconning, when they could have simply created a whole new faction. Like the Kreig and Vostroyans, fan made factions, that were built up and made popular by fans. They could have chosen to do a ton of different things to do to introduce "powerful women" into the setting for the sake of inclusion. But this all falls apart when you examine what would actually do more for the game as a whole with regards to inclusion. Like making the price of entry much, much lower. Thusly including more people to join in, in whatever way they like. No this screams of an activist planting a flag. This is pure spite and vindictive spirit.

We are mad that our hobby is being bought out by a corrupt corporation with a clearly corrupt, ideological agenda. Warhammer is not for absolutely everyone, but ANYONE is welcome to try it. Theres two issues here: lore and the reason for it. Lore states the custodes were all men like all space marines for the purpose of absolute control. If there were female space marines, they could breed and create a breed of humans more powerful and less controlled which is the main concern of the Emperor. Actually its generally the older fans that get more upset, just to clarify, I bought the original Space Marine boxed set, the ones with the pointy noses back in the early 80's. And I can say, this is not going to blow over easily. Flipping off GW and going 3d printed has never been easier.

Back in the 80's GW wanted to make female versions of most things but they had to stop because they weren't selling. If the market was there they would have made some of the marines in the original box set female. For some reason they managed to add female sculpts to the original eldar guardian kit, I guess there was enough of a market for female models at that time to justify it, that or knife ear collectors aren't as averse to female sculpts. They probably are adding more female versions now to attract new customers, but they are also probably reacting to a demand that is already there for female sculpts.

I'm an older fan and I think this hysteria is nonsensical, especially considering that people who are blindly loyal in the face of things that actually ruin the game for people like whole armies disappearing, armies being rewritten so that your lovingly collected armies are now useless (which of my first edition Squat, IG or Space Marine armies could field in 10th? Or 4th for that matter) or the endless awful rule changes are yelling that THIS is the hill they'll die on.

Games Workshop doesn't seem to appreciate how fast life can come at you, especially when people have been simmering for a long time. When marriages break down into one last blowout that culminates in divorce, half the time it's over a toothpaste cap left off or a single stray remark, not the real issues that chipped away at the couple for years leading up to it. GW has been chiseling away at their fans for years with unwanted rule changes, extortionate pricing, pushy sales staff, etc. People are *ready* to pop off, and this may be as good a reason as any.

Discourse, it isn't specifically the change. It is much much bigger than the change. It is part of a trend that has affected EVERY fandom. Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, Dune, Terminator, Aliens, Predator, hell, nearly every fandom has been changed to be more "inclusive". All for the worse. Warhammer doesn't need added diversity, it literally covers the gambit on diversity. Adding a female custodes does not improve inclusivity to the hobby. But GWs response to people who questioned it has definitely damaged inclusivity. The gatekeepers are on high alert, because they have seen what happened in the other fandoms. Where the actual fans were castigated as bigots and run out of their fandom so the inclusivity could commence. The fans are right to be angry. This isn't like a usual GW retcon. This is getting on the pander train. How many times has GW stated they aren't a games company, they are a miniature company? They openly despise the fanbase who actually care about the lore they've created. Fans are just another paypig that should give money and keep their mouths shut. I get your point on certain people talking about this aren't real fans, just hopping on the bandwagon, but people like me who've played since 1st edition? When all the armies were in a single book? Who only had the lore in fluff paragraphs in said book? Who only got real lore when the codexes were invented? We speculated the entire Horus Heresy before Dan Abnett wrote his first novel. I have watched every fandom I have ever loved be turned upside down and destroyed in the past decade. It is ridiculous. Retcons do happen. For instance, originally, the two missing primarchs were intended to be open slots so fans could make their own chapters and lore that didn't rely on other chapters history. Originally, Chaos was split into Chaos and Renegades. Huron Blackheart wasn't a possessed monster, he was a captain that rebelled and took his company with him. Necrons were mere raiders that could just show up during a battle. Hit and run. Squats? Genestealer Cults? Looted tanks? Yeah, I'm familiar with retcons. This is not a normal retcon.

And no, it wasn't them being "gendered", those terms applied to sex. Brotherhood doesn't apply to "people who think they're male", but actual males. Sons, same thing. This idea that gender is what people refer to when they talk about son, daughter, aunt, uncle, he, she is absurd. They're referring to sex and have ALWAYS referred to sex. "See that old lady down the street?" A simple question. 99% of people would say "yes, I see her." Not "How do you know it's a woman, did you talk to her?" Absurdity.

I think the problem people are having is the motivation behind these changes - on some level we do know that ‘selling stuff’ is the bottom line that drives a lot of the decisions introducing new factions, models and lore changes. There’s a tacit acceptance that 40k fans have where these changes are tolerated because A: on some level we recognize that new lore equals new models which, in turn, equals profit and B: At least these changes result in new game mechanics to puzzle over and explore. But this new change doesn’t seem to be motivated by creating ‘new content’ and therefore the motivation behind it isn’t receiving the same tolerance from fans. The way these changes are being conducted are making many feel that established 40k lore has an obligation to represent real-world political parallels instead of narrative cohesion or expanded gameplay. There is no logistical purpose for altering the lore in this way as functionally Custodes armor makes gender and body-type irrelevant. I think the feeling many people have now is a fear that their fun, imaginatively rich and canonically long-standing franchise is now going to be expected to shape itself to satisfy modern day societal sensibilities rather than creating ‘new content’ (financially motivated ‘new content’, but that’s inescapable). Future changes to the canon will not prioritize established lore and will instead be made through the lens of ‘correcting’ perceived racial, gendered and political shortcomings. Our concern is not that the lore will become overcomplicated (40k fans feed on minutia and obscure data bits in my experience) but that the legacy and imagination of the franchise will soon be subject to a simplifying censor; one that cares more for perceived representational ‘correctness’ than for respecting established canon or the spirit of 40k’s admittedly ridiculous but committed lore. Though this initial Custodes change is not as vicious and world-breaking as some have made it out to be in my opinion, I think there is a concern that this is just the beginning.

The motivation is that they were supposed to have been written into Master of Mankind in 2016, but GW production told them no because of Charterhouse. It's literally all there in the video. Note that producion didn't say "no, because there are no female Custodians", they said "no, because we don't sell any female Custodians". There's no agenda here; the way that Custodes are made means the originating sex has no bearing on the final result and quite frankly it's weird it has taken GW this long to outright name them.

I've said it before but the whole fem-custodies really does feel like GW pissed on a bunch of people and told them it was raining and a bunch of feminist types came out laughing at everybody who was pissed off thinking they won something. But it was a literal tweet. that was it as far as I know there's nothing about it in lore and I haven't seen any models for them. so what is the actual point of this entire controversy other than to piss off a certain group of customer.

Anyone who criticises people for having a problem with female Custodes clearly knows nothing about the WHY they're upset. Calling them bigots only makes the accuser look even more clueless. 40k has loads of female characters in it, many of them loved to bits by fans, but the reason the fans have a problem with this is they dont want woke-folk destroying the franchise like they did with Star Wars...and Star Trek...and Marvel...and Bud Light...and just about everything else it touches. So you can hardly blame 40k fans for being horrified to learn that after woke destroyed everything in its path, it's now turned its baleful gaze onto the 40k Universe. There's a very good reason why all the Marvel films after the Thanos arc wrapped up went downhill so rapidly -- because most people dont want woke virtue signalling tainting a franchise they love. Keep woke politics out of it!

These retconns are not done just in the name of profits, if that was the case then you would expect these decisions to be made that would help the companies bottom line not ruin it. The paltry few female Custodes miniatures that Games Workshop would sell will not make up for huge hit their stocks took introducing this baloney. These corporations mainly Blackrock and Vanguard are willing to sacrifice the entire industry in the name of diversity, equity, and inclusion and that includes them losing millions to change the culture. They did it with Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, and just about every other franchise and mythology that has straight white males as their core demographic. TLDR, it's not about profits, it's about kulture kampf.

Adding all new units that don't conflict with prior lore is no real problem, breaking established lore cause your corporate investor tells you to jump hoops for ESG money fucks up the product cause suspension of disbelief suffers when the real world leaks into the setting.

the Rogal dorn tank is the worst possible comparison to this issue if you were to align that argument the imperial guard would of had to have been a exclusively infantry only fighting force , they would have to have had at least 3 codex's and 30 years worth of references that specifically state "they are an infantry only fighting force" , then introduce the dorn tank and then say since guard was formed they used tanks the STC concept, lost tech and vast scale setup of the universe is specifically designed to allow for new features to be added and back dated to a certain degree we are able to recover a entirely lost chapter of marines or other force just through the way warp travel works there is many systems of flexibility within the story telling structure of 40k , this is commonly referred to as "the unreliable narrator" its a powerful story telling tool it is however NOT all powerful it cannot change well established principles once a situation has been acknowledged so many times across so many books and situations , then it cannot be changed from the historical standpoint Darth Vader wears black armor , it is known, you cannot undo that by out of nowhere saying Darth Vader always wore red armor not only is it extremely damaging but entirely avoidable, Darth Vader can simply acquire a new suit of armor the story mechanics are so readily available , female custodies could of been added without ANY fuss what so ever but instead we get this insidious slide in consider , if they codex snippet wasnt leaked nobody would have known untill the codex was in hand there wasnt any lead up, they didnt sell us on getting new minis , there wasnt any hype or even mystery the people behind this were trying very hard to slip this in under the radar so that "there have always been female custodies" would not have been a out right lie the entire purpose of this is move is political it is a beach head to force female space marines its not because they would be cool or sexy or increase representation its because male space bad, male space enemy, political agenda good

From boys, brothers, males in every codex and lore books until now, to such a blatant retcon. Worse that even a "they were always male by customs, but now they have females." Or "belisarius sue improved on the emperor's design again and now it works on girls too" would still be dumb. Fluff, flavor, matters. And it's not just thematic fluff, but mechanical as well.
