Couldn't have said it better. No substitute for real arrangements with full orchestra as opposed to a twangy de-tuned guitar or keyboards-only soundtracks they try to get away with on more modern so-called "westerns."

Men Of Shiloh is now available for viewing on Free vee. I wasn't even aware of this series until today. I just watched one with Greer Garson & James Whitmore in it from 1970 (Season 9 Episode 8) that was pretty good. Well written, which would explain how it lasted 9 seasons. But I HATE that the Virginian & "Men of Shiloh" both are listed on Comcast/Xfinity without a list of the guest stars and their bio's being made available to viewers interested in watching. The guest stars on old westerns, to a large extent, determine whether I am going to have any interest in watching the episode. It really annoys me that this information is available for other westerns but it is not readily available for these 2 shows. WRZ 2023-03-06

The Virginian was part of my childhood some fifty years ago. I used to watch it with my aunt. She's gone twenty-one years, and now James Durey is gone too. Still when I watch The Virginian or hear the theme of the show it takes me back to those happy times so long ago. May James Durey rest in peace.

@@yannmorellec1922 Ha ha, TV was very important at that time. It was still a fairly new invention and everyone stared at it in the evenings. I remember how James Drury was brought to Finland in 1971 by a Finnish organizer with a big (at that time) money. They drove him in different parts of Finland at midsummer festivals and people gathered to watch the world-famous TV star. He spoke a few words on the stage, smiled and signed autographs. Somewhere he was put on a horse and photos were taken. One summer they brought Ryan O'Neal on a similar tour. Everybody knew him from the TV series Peyton Place. William Conrad from the TV series Cannon also toured Finland at midsommer festivals in 1970s, as did many others. The organizers earned well.

It's nice that they list the actor credits at the start of the episode instead of at the end. I am much more likely to watch these old episodes if they have guests I am already familiar with. It's annoying to have to record an episode and then fast forward to the end to see who was in it. But I am also confused why I can NOT click on the info button when watching on the Comcast IMDB channel and see the bio for the "guest star" actors in each Virginian episode like I can for the episodes of most other westerns like for instance Gunsmoke. One of the best TV western themes, period. The end titles during the first three years was a shot of the Virginian (from a distance) sitting atop a chestnut horse. In early season one segments, it was a moving image. After that, it was completely still. Between seasons 4 and 8, a still picture of the entire Shiloh Ranch was used for the end titles. For the 9th and last season (under the title The Men from Shiloh), a still shot of a western town was shown.

Hearing this reminds me of my Grandfather, who was a very big fan of Westerns. Summer nights as a kid we watched Rawhide, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Lawman, Bat Masterson, Sugarfoot and of course, The Virginian. I think he watched every Western when they were a mainstay on TV back in the 50s and 60s, not to mention movies and Zane Grey novels. I obviously got my habit of watching Western movies from him, but tend more towards Western history when it comes to reading. He passed back in '85. Miss you, Gramps. Sleep well.

Great clip and thanks for sharing it TeeVees. Not too many TV shows can boast the musical genius of BOTH Percy Faith and Ennio Morricone, composing the music for the intro and end of the show. I loved both and favored very slightly Morricones version. Truly ground breaking show, with some legends as actors and expertly presented. I'm very privileged to have enjoyed many hours of quality entertainment, thanks to the creators of the Virginian and people like TeeVees, who make sure the show will always remain relevant. My favorite episode was, "The Legend of Spencer Flats" and was the last episode the late great Doug McClure was to be seen in. Lee Majors was pure class and in a league of his own, during his prime with the Virginian. Very sad to see the show come to an end!!

I don’t know. It’s pretty hard to compete with Gunsmoke. The guy that played doc was born in rural Kansas back in 1904 and Arness put in a lot of work at that role. I mean I love all the shows, the rifleman, bonanza, wanted dead or alive, lawman, cheyenne. It’s all glorious. But Gunsmoke is just so good. Even John Wayne said Arness was excellent. I know they were friends but that’s high praise from Wayne.

As a teenager in the '60s lived on an Arizona cattle ranch during the summers. The music is perfect for the feeling of the West, and the shows were fun too. (Nothing to do with the book, but so what.) There's something about that landscape that just pulls your soul out to the sky. Grew up in New York City and the difference couldn't be greater. And Drury was perfect for the role. RIP James.
