Writing Scene Data, I've been trawling online for an hour just to find out how to save the settings when you turn the device off and on. While dealing with the frustration of Cubase's limit of 8 QCs at a time, I ran into this video. You have opened up a whole new realm of possibilities that I am not currently using with my NK2. Thank you so much for making such a clear and thorough video with this piece of gear. I have mostly been using this to control cc for virtual instruments. I feel like the training wheels are about to come off and better workflow options are about to open up.

@@MoonhareStudio Honestly what you have provided us here is amazing. I downloaded your files. I then loaded the NK2 with 20 of the most common key commands I use, but half of them are ones I don't use often enough to always have at my fingertips and I'm consulting the sheet I keep by my setup. I got them organized in a logical fashion and am about to go print small stickers to put on the NK2. This is a gamechanger as far as workflow is concerned. I subscribed and will be checking out your other videos. Huge thanks.

Glad to help out. Great gadget but pretty poor indtructions.

I just plugged mine in this morning (I use Logic) opened the configuration app typed in the CC values, opened Logic & set the transport buttons I use & I was done. 15mins. I didnt know there was an option to hold buttons for a daw xD This is a brilliant video for the set up!! thanks a million for this! I learned things as I didnt read the manual. xD

This cheap little piece of kit is certainly a useful tool on my desk.

Wow, finally got it sorted, thanks to you. Also learned some great Cubase tips along the way. I've been all over the internet for weeks, trying to get help with the nanokontrol 2 and I've run into a lot of confusing/misinformation. Korg should put you on their payroll. Liking, subscribing, and hitting that bell. Thanks again!

Thanks Claude. I agree it's sometimes hard to find all the information in one place so I tried to bring everything I'd learnt together. This is a must on my desk now and I may do a short Nano tips vid soon with some other functions I have programmed like the volume control for the click track etc.

Korg should have done a much better job making this product work the way it should. It's amazingly dysfunctional. None of the buttons light up in CC mode. When I hit the Set Marker button in CC mode it opens a dialogue box instead of just setting the marker - but worse yet it jumps to the beginning of the song and sets the marker there rather than where I want to set it. In Mackie mode the pan knobs jump from 100L to 100R with nothing available in-between. I kind of despise the way that with computers, the product is finished when they've done just enough to get your money. Then getting it to work is your problem. You get to watch hours of videos, scroll through forums and still might never get it to work correctly. Imagine if you bought a new car and the AC didn't work. You go to the dealership and they say "have you tried taking it out and reinstalling it? There's a good KZread video you can watch, we'll send you the link. You might need to update the driver. You'll figure it out eventually." It's really demoralizing that before I can create music, which is the whole point, I have to dedicate hours and hours to stupid shit that some programmer somewhere who makes way more money than me should have done. He's watching some f**king show on Netflix right now while all of us finish doing his job for him. Sorry for the rant. I'm very disappointed in this product. I had such high hopes.

Hello Darren! Thanks for this detailed tutorial, it was really helpful. I faced the same problem with nanoKontrol2 wasn't recognized as connected device. My solution and my opinion is that happens, when Cubase 11 is running. If you quit the DAW, you will find in the list again without reconnecting it.

Yes I agree that often does work. I just had a few times when it stubbornly refused to pick up and so I had to disconnect. So I decided to cover that process just in case someone has the same issue. Still think this is excellent value for money. I wouldn't be without it now.

Darren hello! I need a little help. This morning when I open my Cubase Pro 11 and when I use my Korg nano Kontrol2 it didn’t function. I check my generic remote and I saw my midi input and output setting have no “Nanokontrol2 1 slider/knob and Nanokontrol2 1CRTL. I reinstall again the driver but when I go to generic remote, even mackie control, there are no Nanokontrol2 to choose.

That is strange. Did it stop working when you switched to Cubase 11 from 10.5 or was it previously OK? Sometimes Cubase loses the settings when you upgrade. If this is the case take a look at this video as it might (no guarantees) help. kzread.info/dash/bejne/eGeatraEZM_ToKg.html.

It work perfectly switching from 10.5 to 11. It has no issues up to doing this Spitfire scoring competition of Stargirl. It was yesterday when I was doing a recording of piano and vocal when it suddenly did not respond. Then I checked the generic remote and mackie control that was where the driver was gone. The only driver there is my Tascam Series 102i driver and USB driver. I was also thinking of Windows 10 updates wherein it messes up the driverrs. That’s only my theory.

Excellent presentation. I've had a NanoK2 for two days and finally got it to work fine on Reaper (mac). It hasn't been easy! So I'm a little late on your video which might have been of interest to me. A question that I have not managed to solve: how to assign the faders by slice of 8 channels?. I had to reserve the 7/8 faders for controlling the parameters of the sound banks (expression and volume) and also reserve the knobs for my plugins (ideal for controlling a compressor for example, with the impression of have an analog machine on hand...) In short, I lack a lot of experience to go further and assign several slices by groups... Sorry for this long message and its formulation, (I am French...) Thanks !

Amazing video! I bought this controller a few days ago, and still haven't got the darn thing working properly. Your video helped A LOT, but I am using Ableton Live 10 .... I wonder if you or anyone that reads this message may be able to point me in the direction of a video (or written instructions) that deals with Ableton Live 10 rather than Cubase? Not quite sure I know what you mean but if you have it set in standard mode then you have to bank up and down to get to different groups of channels on your mixer. If you connect more than one you effectively turn them into a 16 channel (or more) mixer controller. If you're programming different controls like I do in CC mode to act as shortcuts to various functions you can save the layout for later recall and could therefore load in the layout of choice at the start of your session.

Hey, really nice video production work. I am using nanoKontrol 2 with MainStage on a mac, mostly for faders for live use. Would you know how (or IF it's possible) to bump the nano from MainStage channels 1-8, then bump to 9-16? Many thanks!

Hi there. I use Gig Performer for live work on a PC so I'm not familiar with Main Stage. But theoretically I don't see why not. I am pretty certain I can do it in Gig Performer. I would look for a MainStage forum to see if anyone has tried this with any midi controller because if it is a setting within the Mainstage software then you should be able to set up the Korg in this way. Thanks for the video! Is it possible to map those pan controls to some virtual synth knobs, like Filter Cut-Off? It looks like those knobs may have a "notch" in the middle, that can be not very comfortable for that?

Hi there - the pan knobs could definitely be used for that sort of function and I can confirm that there is no notch or click at the 12 o'clock centre position so I think it would work well.

Is there a similar option for FL Studio at 05:17? I would love to just assign everything myself like you can in Cubase, as I am already fiddling around for 5 hours. All DAW modes already have the knobs linked to panning... thats the only thing I dont want

Hi there. To be perfectly honest I don't have FL Studio so I can't be of much help. Cubase is very versatile but I'm sure it can't be the only DAW to do this sort of thing. Check out any FL Studio forums to see if anyone has any suggestions. Good luck.

Thanks for your excellently prepared video but I just can't get cubase to recognise my nanokontrol2. I get the couple of flashes which suggest it's been recognised but when I look in the Mackie control it's not there.

Have you tried installing the Korg Editor Software on your machine? If not do that then hard restart your computer and see if the Nano Kontrol Option comes up in the Mackie Dropdown list.

@@MoonhareStudio Thanks your quick reply. Yes, it's sorted. I had the Editor software but it didn't recognise the device so, although it was recognised by the pc, I uninstalled it. I also did a factory reset on the nanokontrol2. Then reinstalled the nanokontrol2 on the pc and then loaded cubase and did the set-cycle routine and voila - it was recognised by cubase. I must say I'm sure I'm not the only one to come across this problem. Anyway, thanks again for your prompt reply and support - it has been much appreciated.

Hi Darren, Thanks for this excellent video, particularly the section on Quick Controls which was really useful. I notice that in your example you set up controls for a Spitfire Audio product. I've tried to set a couple up via Cubase and BBC Symphony Orchestra Core to control Dynamics and Expression with sliders using your suggested approach, and while these work to a certain extent the sliders effectively act as switches i.e. with the slider at the bottom, the effect is off in BBCSO and when I slide it up the effect jumps to the top of the range rather than going up gradually! I've tried to dig around to understand why this is happening without success - do you have any thoughts? I'd appreciate any suggestions you might have! Best, Andy

Hi there. That is really odd. You're right in saying it doesn't seem to be acting as a continuous controller as it should but switching from 0 to 127. Have you tried tying these functions to the rotary pots to see if they do the same? I don't have BBCSO although I do have some if the other Spitfire libraries that use their proprietary interface. If I can come up with a solution I'll let you know.

Hi Andy - I just tried out CC1 (Mod Wheel/Dynamics) and CC11 (Expression) on Spitfire's Symphonic Motions library which has the same two slider format as BBCSO and it all worked exactly as expected. It is always difficult to work out a solution when you can't actually replicate the problem so I'm a bit stumped really. All I can suggest is really check through that you have every stage replicated exactly as I said. Also do try mapping to other controllers to see if there may be a physical fault. Try changing your USB cable as well (desperate here but sometimes the simplest thing can cause an issue.) So soory I can't be more help and good luck.

Just curious- do u know if there is a way to save a preset on the nanokontrol without a computer? Basically- the way I’m using it is as a controller for the “sound devices mixpre3ii” which has its own usb connection for a limited amount of midi controllers. The nanokontrol is the one I chose. I wasn’t sure if u thought it would be a function on the korg, or if I need to learn something more about the mixpre3ii. I’m using cubase also, but I don’t need the korg for that. However, if there’s something I can do in cubase to set up the nanokontrol? Idk, any help would be appreciated

Well you could experiment. It does retain all the last presets you programmed in as long as you store it using the Korg editor so my guess would be if you set it up using the computer initially you could then connect it to something else. Because I haven't used it like that I honestly don't know and I have zero experience with the mixpre3ii but if it works then please lrt us know. It might help out someone else.

Great video, thank you. A question though; I wish to use this mainly for the transport feature (in Logic) and assign all of the S/M/R cc buttons as mutes, controlling 24 tracks in the DAW. Is this possible?

Good question. Now this is absolutely possible in Cubase Pro by using CC mode and then just programming the transport to perform exactly as it would normally then assigning the other buttons to whatever you want. This is exactly what I use the unit for although I chose lots of different shortcuts for my S M R buttons rather than assigning to mutes. Now the problem is I am not a Logic user so I do not know whether you have the same functionality. I generally think most DAWs are basically the same beast in most respects, but tackle things in slightly different ways so I want to say yes but I have no way to really say 100% for sure. You may have to do a bit of digging into the way Logic handles midi controllers first but the headline takeaway is that the Korg can handle any combination of commands to any button (including the transport) if Logic can provide the commands the Korg needs.

Hi. Great video, thanks for the tuition. Everything now works in Mackie mode with my Cubase Artist 9.5 except that the pan pots affect the slider settings !?!? Pan pot 1 makes slider 3 move, PP 2 => slider 4 etc. I just don't use them any more - unless you know a way to cure this.

Sounds like the routing is wrong. Have you set it up using the factory Cubase setting or were you programming it all in from scratch? I'd suggest closing your machine down then trying to reboot your Nano using the normal cubase setup I described again. If that doesn't work then it may be possible to do it all as a generic remote using my free template as a starting point. I could potentially give you some guidance although I'm not currently able to use my studio until August (long story).

Previously I had been playing around trying to get a generic set-up working and it was still active when I switched over to the Mackie mode. I am planning a new Nano video because it has all changed again with Cubase 12 - it actually comes with a pre-programmed NanoKontrol template now - so I will bear this little nugget of wisdom in mind. I use Logic pro x and I would like every channel to be control by its on slider for the volumes how do I do this ?

I am away from home at the moment so not at the studio. I don't use Logic so I can't check but it might be worth trying the DAW setup that I explain at the beginning and see if one of the other DAW modes will work with Logic. Just experiment with the key combinations shown on screen. If that doesn't work you may need to go into CC programming but that us much more complicated and while I know how to do it in Cubase, again it is not something I coukd instruct you on in Logic I'm afraid.

Is it possible to switch between Mackie and cc mode without having to unplug the device?

Hi there. Unfortunately not. You have to do that holding down two buttons thing to switch modes and the only way to do that is to turn it off. (Or buy a second Nano Kontrol and have one set to each!)

I found out that if I open the nano control editor write the scene then start Cubase it always works without me having to unplug and replug in the USB cord. At least it’s been working for the last four weeks.

Hi there! Do the faders work in the pickup mode properly? I found that with Ableton live they don't and cause signifficant volume jumps when mixing, switching trackes, etc...Other than that it's a great device!

In DAW mode they do not use pick up mode so what you say is correct, it will jump as soon as you touch the fader. There is the ability to program faders to pickup in CC mode which I use for my control of the metronome volume. Seems to work fine but as I use the Qcon ProX for mixing I haven't actually tried programming for mixer fader control.

@@MoonhareStudio thanks, you gave me the light of hope that it can be done through CC mode. I swtiched from "Live" mode to CC in the Korg Editor, checked the fader box, however found no options for takeover modes :((( I'm totally new to scripting issues, and though editors are meant for guys like me with no coding skills, I must be missing something...I also don't understand why this isn't a default feature. While googling this matter I came across multiple cases of the same kind with no adequate solutions except for one guy somehow managed it through remotify scripts but provided no details on that

Hi, thank you for the video! I have a problem and I have checked everything but my Nanokontrol2 is not recognized by the Korg Kontrol Editor. The Korg drivers are updated, I've uninstalled an installed the Korg Kontrol Editor and the drivers. My nanokontrol2 are recognized in the Manage Devices of my PC (Windows 10, 64) and everything seems ok. But when I open the Korg Kontrol Editor, my nanokontrol2 is "not connected". I've connected and disconnected the USB cable as the video shows in 14:16 but it doesn't work. Anyone could help me? I'm thinking about buying another midi controller surface... Thanks in advance!

I think there are some occasions where this doesn't work smoothly and I tried to show as many of those in the vid as I could. However there is one more issue that sometimes causes problems for Windows users. Windows appears to only allow 10 midi devices to be installed. I had this happen to me at one stage and it wasn't that I had 10 devices connected at that point (or even owned 10 at that stage!), but over the time I owned the PC I had connected more than 10 devices and the settings were stored in the registry and maxed out. I can't explain to you how to check this out (it was a long time ago) but there are several KZread videos about it and how to adjust the registry. Might be worth a try but I'm not saying that is the problem here. There are so many ways software can clash with other installations. I hope you sort it out because this unit is a great addition to any studio. I would be lost without it now.

@@MoonhareStudio Thank you for your response! Yes, I checked the problem that you say, but it is not the case. Finally, I've decided to use de MC8 nakedboard midi controller. A friend lent it to me and Cubase recognize it immediately even without the software so I use de quick controls on Cubase in order to assign the CC. It is sad that I cannot use nanokontrol2 but I have already lost more time than I had and I have a deadline to attend to ;-) Thanks for your work, I have learned several things watching your video.

Hi there and sorry for the late reply. The only way to switch one to the other is actually powering down then powering up using the button combinations I demonstrated at the start of the video. So it is possible but a little fiddly and not just a case of switching a setting in your DAW.

Great video. Very informative. I'm probably going to buy this controller but I'm a little hesitant - my main concern is, let's say you have the faders set to control your faders/track levels in Cubase, and you mix a project - it sounds great. You reopen the project after using the NanoKontrol on a different project, and the faders are in totally different positions - when you move faders, will they instantly move the track volumes and destroy your perfect mix, or will Cubase ignore movement until the Korg fader reaches the level the track in Cubase is set to, and then latch on, so that only changes you actually want are made? Thanks if you can answer, and great video!

A really good question. Two answers really. As standard out of the box because this is not a motorised fader controller if you set it to be a DAW controller it will do what you outline above. As soon as you move a physical fader it will drag the Cubase fader straight to that location - a jump that will override the original position. However it is possible to program the faders in CC mode to use what is called pick-up mode which means you can move the physical fader and it will do nothing to the Cubase mixer fader until it reaches the same value at which point it will start to move it. Obviously the downside of this is you will have to program the whole unit in CC mode to take advantage of this feature. I have provided a template with the transport controls but not all the faders pre-programmed but I've not attempted to program the faders in this way.

@@MoonhareStudio okay but you're pretty sure it can be programmed to do the latch (better) way. I have no problem setting aside a few hours to program the hell out of it in midi/CC mode. I was kind of leaning towards that anyway because I know I'll want to customize a lot of weird stuff that I'm sure isn't in Mackie mode. And since your template will probably get me halfway there anyway, why not. Which reminds me, gotta hit that tip jar. Thanks for the video/template. I'm looking forward to getting away from my mouse as much as possible. Just wish I had a bigger desk haha.

It seems like there should be a way to make the controller work that way - otherwise it's not very useful as a mixer really. It seems like by default it should work that way in any mode. But I've noticed that "common sense mode" isn't usually the case with, well, anything really.

I agree. And with other passive fader controllers I've had in the past (eg the Nektar P1) you could select the mode you preferred, which is really useful as in some instances it is good to be able to grab a control instantly but jumping on faders is less useful.

Not to belabor a point, but in generic setup, what commands are used to assign cc to faders. Everything else shown and worked flawlessly in your presentation, but you didn’t show fader commands. Also, more and more the kontrol looses connection. That’s taking up more time during work resetting it. I’ve had it for 2 years. Is it time to retire it and replace? Any replacement suggestions? Well I have to say if you want to use faders as normal it is generally better to use the DAW mode. However assuming that for some reason you need to use CC mode and still want faders I haven't really programmed a foolproof setup for that. I use CC mode to allocate shortcuts to buttons and specific faders to functions like metronome volume or mod wheel. You could try setting up a project with 8 tracks in it, then use those tracks as the controller. For example load in 8 blank audio tracks and then select Audio track 1 volume (fader) from the mixer menu for track 1 etc in Studio Setup. I have tried this and it works but the next issue is how you move from tracks 1-8 to tracks 9-16. I think you'd need to set up a track up and down on two other buttons but I just haven't looked at that as I don't use it this way in my studio. I will link a video I did on midi contollers below to give you some more ideas if the Nano isn't doing it for you. Of course it is a very cheap controller. You're talking orders of magnitude more expensive to step up.

Hi Darren! Can I seek your help on how to do troubleshooting on Korg Nanokontrol2. Today I opened Cubase Pro 11 and my Nanokontrol2 is not responding. How can I make this Nanokontrol2 normal again? The transport buttons are not responding but the Midi CCs (the faders) are working.

Weird that some works but not others. Open up Studio Setup first and check that all the functions are still showing up in the generic remote. I can't think why some would be misding but worth looking and perhaps reloading the template if something is up. I did have the whole Nano stop responding a month ago and it turned out to be an issue with a security update in Windows. This is too complex to explain in a message but I could do a video to explain, wouldn't be until the weekend though. Other thing is unibstall and reinstall, just in case something has become corrupted. Good luck.

Tricky. I did include everything I could find that was a problem from a software point of view. Next step might be to check physical things. Is your lead OK? Try a different USB input. Also if you have another computer or a friend does, then see if it will install on that to check if it is actually something wrong with the Korg Nano itself. Also it is worth uninstalling the Korg drivers and software completely then checking you have the latest versions, reinstall and try again. Sorry, I'm just a user myself so that's what I would try.

Hi Darren. You're a true life saviour, this is great stuff. I have a strange situation. My faders aren't making a gradual change in the parameteres. If I have the faders all the way down, my volume is at zero in cubase. But if I move a little the fader, it goes to the maximum volume in cubase instead of letting me gradually get there. It's like or nothing or all. Can someone help please? Thanks everyone.

Hi there. A couple of things it would be useful to know. Are you using the NK2 as a traditional mixer for transport controls and faders or are you in CC mode? It sounds like the faders are set to toggle between 0-127 rather than fading up but that shouldn't happen if you have DAW mode selected. I assume it happen on all of them or is it just a few? If you are using it as a mixer I suggest rebooting as per my instructions and also make sure it is selected as a Mackie Controller (You probably already did this). Before anything else, I must say that I'm using NanoKontrol Studio, not NK2, but I believe that it's the same to set up in Cubase. As soon as I read your answer I understood what was happening. In the Korg Editor I had it set to Cubase, but in Cubase I'm using it to control the midi CC data. Now it's fine. Thanks for your help, man. You got yourself a new fan :D

The function I am looking for is: open the EDIT channel window, then open the third party plugin in the insert ahahah. Do you think I can do that with nano control?

Hi there. A lot of functions can transpose from one controller to another. The only complication may be that some functions are only available over the Mackie control protocol and as the Nano uses the generic remote, and not Mackie, some things won't work. I will have a look as there may well be workarounds using macros. If so I'll follow up with another Nano vid.

OK I'm part way there. You can open the edit channel window by programming the following into one of the buttons. Set DEVICE to Command Set Channel/category to Edit Set Value/action to Edit Channel Settings Flag is P (not sure if that matters) That will toggle the window on and off for you in the same way as the Edit button on the Qcon.

Hello, thanks for the interesting video. However, no matter what I do I can't get my system (Cubase 11 Pro) to see my 2 Nanokontrol2s. I've reset dozens of times, reinstalled the drivers the same, tried different USB ports and different cables. They're going in the bin very soon!

There is a limit of 10 midi devices allowed on Windows systems so it might be that is the problem, not the controllers. There are some good tutorials on how to de register old devices on KZread to free up space for new ones that might be worth checking before you get rid of them.

@@thebarrylurveshow5530 To be honest it was a long time ago and on a different laptop that I ran into this issue so I'm a bit hazy on it but there were lots of examples of exactly this issue and plenty of people with solutions. I had a Nektar P1 at the time and had to ditch a few old controllers that I no longer had but were still flagged on the system. I agree it seems crazy and microsoft should really sort it out.
